You have to stand in one spot approximately in the middle between the portal and the top of the stairs. Make sure you don't run around too much, or it won't complete. It took me literally minutes to figure this out.

Take about 7-8 steps from the top of the stairs towards the dark portal. Stop and don't move for about 30 seconds, it should trigger. If it doesn't work, continue to move back and forth in a line from the top of the stairs to the dark portal, staying closer ot the top of the stairs than the portal, and wait a few seconds each time. You should eventually get it.

At the top of the stairs you'll see 3 tiles. Stand in the middle one and summon the child, the quest should complete.

I've found instead of running up the stairs, then summoning the orphan, starting at the bottom of the stairs and slowly walking up WITH the orphan works perfectly. The orphan will say something as you're walking and run up the rest of the way and trigger everything else.

I've done this quest five times now on my alts. I have found that if you summon your orphan near the windrider guy, THEN go up the stairs the quest completes. The other factor I have noticed is that it appears that only one person at a time can complete the quest, so if another toon is completing it you will have to wait a few seconds for it to complete.

Ran around for awhile and nothing. Then run up the stairs (from the level where the windriders are) just like you're heading towards the dark portal. Half way through the stairs the orphan will run up himself and complete.

More important than where you stand is what's going on around you. If someone else is in the process of completing the quest (their orphan is out and interacting with the "event"), you can not also complete the quest. Wait until their orphan is done and then resummon. You mayb have to try multiple times, depending how many other people are around.

Additionally, when the orphan notices the portal, a moment or two later a Horde Soldier will come out of the portal and in front of the child yell "For the younglings! For the Horde!"

in all the quests the orphan gives you, if someone else has an orphan out you will not be able to complete the quest.
had to waste 10 minutes till the ally standing in front of the dark portal left, could not even kill him because of him not beeing flagged for pvp there.

Stand at the bottom of the stairs on the Middle title, unsummon and summon you kid
again and walk in a straight line up the stairs towards the Portal. when you reach
halfways towards the portal when atop of the stair it should complete. atleast it works for me :)

If it does not work the first time do not despair keep trying, worked for most of my guild now. :)

Its bugged or something cause it wont complete for me. And I am near the Dark Portal with the Orpan

Landed. Ran to bottom of steps. Summoned the Blood Elf Orphan. Ran up the steps and sat down. After about 30 seconds, she goes "Whoa! No Way!" Quest complete.

Stood at 88,50 and after a few minutes it completed.

I wandered around 88,50 as mentioned earlier, then accidentally went through the portal. When I zoned back, the brat exclaimed something ("I don't believe it" or similar) and ran to to the top of the stairs. An orc turned up, "For the younglings! For the Horde!" ran down the stairs and the quest was done.

I stood at that spot for about five minutes. I got tired of waiting and started summoning & re-summoning the child. After the third try it went off : )

Take your orphan, Salandria, up the steps of the Stair of Destiny to stand before the Dark Portal in Hellfire Peninsula. Make sure to call for her if she is not present when you arrive.

The grown-ups are always trying to tell us scary stories about it and how it's so dangerous, with lots of demons, and stuff.
