I think I spent a good hour working on this quest before finally completing it.

Get used to his yell, "Prepare a funereal pyre! <Name> has challenged Skyshatter!"

The trick here is to remain within range of him (which I think is no greater than 15 YDs, MUCH less than the others), while avoiding a bombardment of 'meteors' that shower around him.

If you remain rather close to him the entire time (He must have 280% flight speed... I could NEVER duck and dodge without him getting too far ahead), he'll end up soaking up most of the meteors, himself. Not to be corny, but trust your instincts. He'll lead you to victory. His flight is much shorter than Mulvericks, but about three times as annoying.

I can tell you for certain.. that you can do it without, a Paladin..

I, a 70 Hunter was able to do it after 9 tries (I know).. with only a riding crop.. It's sort of easy, after you know what to do..

My advice, stay close to him.. go up and down when he shoots his metoers so you dont' get hit..

He tries to trick you a few times stops and does a 360 and drops meteors a few times during the race, just don't run through him or you will be knocked off, because he sets himself on fire..

As far as that enjoy, as of right now I am 2475/21000 into revered...

** Edit.. by the way, I would.. remove all armor, so you don't take.. Durability hits.. in case you die :)

Just beat him so I wanted to share the a small tip I used to do so.

Fly side by side with him @ approx 10 yards away from him as he almost never shoots his meteors there, don't know if this is possible with a riding crop and the huge downside with this strat is that you have to know about where he turns so you can go lower as you turn if he turns to you or do a sharper turn if he turns away.

If you have noticed, he has the armoured Netherdrake.
I think its the one with 315% speed.
Flying on a straight line with him, even with the raiding crop makes you bite the dust :(

The other guys were pretty easy, but this one seems to give a lot of people problems. The result is that there is a line of people waiting to do it often. If you have not already found out: it can be done a a group. Instead of waiting and sniping the quest, group up and you can all start it at once.

Just done it successfully.
It is definitely helpful to use a druid in epic flight form being damn close to you or him. This way he takes sometimes alot of the meteors.
Also a paladin will help, using the crusader aura. He just needs to be careful with the meteors as well.

Other than this, I flew on his left side as long as possible, somtimes up and down to avoid the meteors.
If I fall behind, see paladin (and my enchants for flying faster).

The least you can do while not having any help, learn his flight pattern / path.
Then keep trying and ask others around you to join.
That way at least one or two may make it through.

As suggested before, this race can be very difficult without a riding crop or a paladin around to increase your flight speed. It doesn't make much sense that the reward is what's essentially a riding crop, but having one for this quest does make it considerably easier.

If you already have a riding crop and don't need the 1000 reputation, you may want to save yourself the headache and skip it.

I did this without a Paladin but with a Riding crop. All I did was stay above him, and in front of him, but make sure you don't get too far ahead because he will deagro. He also does some 360s that you have to be careful about.

I finally managed to get this quest done after Skyshatter being bugged for the last week, it took me a few runs to learn his route, but once you get used to his turns it isnt that bad.

You definatly dont need a riding crop to do it, but I can see how helpful it is when it comes to the "straights" :)

Ok, 4 days of try's and I did it. Crap thing sometimes NPC get bugged and no one can take quest again until server restart or GM fix it manualy (takes around 5 hours). Riding Crop is must have for this race because he got 310% mount and you get 280%, but with crop you will get same speed as he is. To laught on you Blizz give another riding crop as reward then you complete this.

Tips:
* Race is shorter then Mulverik one. Learn his route.
* Beware other racers because it is tooo lame to fall off mount in case of non Skyshatter bomb something near finish. =)
* Fly after Skyshater on distance like 1,5-2 size of your mount.
* If there is queue invite all players of your side to group (not raid) and start together. Even if someone falls other quest will still work. However you will not receive credit for quest if you fall but you reduce queue much. It is nessesary if there is like 134565 players waiting for Skyshatter.
* Don't be afraid of flying NPCs which attack you. They hit for 250-400 even when naked you have enough HP to survive. So if shorter way thourgh skyraiders - don't affraid.
* It's depending on style ofcourse but I reccomend you to fly in that way: Turning and moving with mouse (so, all flyght you had to press both mouse buttons non-stop) and correct altitude to avoid meteors with "X" (default "fly down key") and "Space (default "fly up" key).
* They Skyshatter rotate for 24 hours for 2-4 sec (he does this lag like 2-4 times on whjole race) unpress your Right mouse key and look with mouse to his position. They you find him press right mouse button and fly to him. However still move updown because meteors can fly above Skyshatter.

A bit crap coz can't drawing well in this way. ^^
But what it shows: since Skyshatter drop a meteor and you see falling meteor it is not dangerous. How ever after 1 sec or so it will explode and this area (around 2 yard radius) is dangerous. If you got nice green ping ( I made this quest with 700 ms) then you will ever seen that places.

it was pretty easy for me, the first 8 or so tries i kept on running into him and it would dismount me, not even getting past the runway.

Once i realized that touching him dismounts you, i tried to fly directly above him the entire time, cutting corners to make up for lost time. I'ts a bit rough to realize you can fly thru the fireballs as long as they haven't exploded yet. after figuring this out, i thought it was easier then the previous guy because it's a shorter path and makes less unpredictable turns.

He will also try to fake you out making 360, but use this time to get ahead, becuase he will ALWAYS turn back around when he does this. I could see this tricking you to follow back into the fireballs and dismount.

In terms of visual positioning, my method of seeing a bit better was to fly sideways, and use full screen mode so my bars/chat windows don't get in the way of any of my view..

After reading all the comments here, everyone seems to have their own style of doing this guy, I think it took me about 40 or so goes before i did it. I flew left to right and so on to avoid meteors.

All I can say is; Practice Practice Practice :)

If you do this on your first go then you truly are a skyshatter overload :)

This is most definetly doable without the riding crop. He's easier than Mulverick imho.

Beat skyshatter on 2nd attempt, took 4-5 for me to get Mulverick down.

I find that hiding all the UIs on screen temporarily for the race helps a lot, easier to race on a clean screen with less distraction. If you aren't sure which key does this, go to your key bindings and locate the "Toggle User Interface" key, hope this would improve fellow racers who are still trying to defeat him =)

I don't know why people say to not worry about the meteor's as its the explosion is what knocks you off? Pretty sure I've been knocked off by them.

Plus, it's a little BS going on here cause the fire will land like 6-7 yds infront of where the meteor actually landed.

Any druids done this in Epic Flight form yet? I did the other 5 without any difficulties due to the fact that if I got hit I could switch bad the second after and continue following, however I tried twice here, and the quest failed almost right after he set off - so it sorta gave me the impression that you needed to be on a mount in order to do this one, I just don't see how it should be different from the other ones. (due to heavy congested I didn't test any further though, perhaps I just go too far away, however I really guess that was unlikely.)

ATTENTION DRUIDS: Yes, you can complete these quests no problem, with your eyes closed and your feet tied up and your hands behind your back. The whole point is not to get knocked off....well as of 6/12/07 you can pretty much shift out and back in whenever you get knocked out of flight form. So....just a heads up to all druid this quest is like...the easiest rep you will ever get next to picking herbs in flight form for netherdust pollen.

Stay ahead of him and off to his left. If you've done it and failed many times to the point where you know his path, it will be all the easier. You can then just fly the path yourself and pan back to make sure you're not too far ahead of him (you'll out of range him and fail). It's an easy completion. If you find yourself getting slightly behind you'll be able to shortcut yourself back in front on one of his sneaky turns.

I just did this race and I had a hell of a lot of tries and never really got into the path since I seemed to fall down shortly after I cam into a new area. Therefore I began to search for a video in the web and found this nice little vid:

For everyone that have trouble with Skyshatter, watch this video and you get a clue of the path. After a couple of tries you will get better and better and will defeat him in the end.

The only real issue with this is his backtracking, forcing me to fly back into a barrage of fireballs I never survive.

Going on attempt number 29 right now, I'm getting pretty close to just giving up the drake altogether.

WOOT i just down him on my 5645867498 attempt... no crop no speed boost nothing... just learn the path and pay attention to him at the end... that vid rly helped me.... also zoom out all the way (change this in interface options) and press alt+Z to hide your interface... and swear a lot... that helps... just try not to /y it like i did... shhh...

Also use alt+z to hide interface (makes it easier / less lag to see where he is at all times without interface clutter) and I also changed max viewing distance / spell detail to high because it helped spot the meteors instead of only seeing them when they were too close.. hope this helps.

Be careful about cutting turns too tightly as he might fade just slightly out of sight and wham, failed quest. Other than that, I repeat the ideas of knowing the path ahead of time and trying to fly in front of him.

Basically the best way to do this is to take the very popular strategy from Mulverick (staying right on top of him) and doing one better to stay above and ahead of Skyshatter.

Granted, the execution of it is tricky as hell, and it took me a couple of hours to perfect, but it's by the far easiest way to do it. If you tag along beside him, you will get shot down a lot of times simply because you don't have that little head start to adjust when he moves, and it's far harder to see where you're going in terms of crystals and other nasty stuff sticking out from the walls around you.

There's been some talk about using a "meteor" tank, which I tried with one of my friends. He had me doing my thing above Skyshatter, attracting all the meteors, while he tagged along behind him completely out of danger. Problem with that is if your meteor tank gets shot down, you're on your own again, as well as the obvious challenge of finding a guy good enough to fly ahead of you in the first place. If you can though, it'll be a load off your mind.

As many others have said, keep trying at this guy, don't get discouraged. Once you have his route down, try flying above and ahead of him, it's damn rewarding when it works, and you very rarely have to worry about his meteors.

It goes without saying that I fully recommend using a Riding Crop. Those are cheap on most servers anyway, and come on, if you've done the Netherwing daylies to Honored, you can damn well afford it by then.

How big is the range of the explosion of the meteors? I seem to get knocked off while those meteors pass me on about 5+ yards distance.

A note for anyone who is determined to dodge the meteors: In a typical example of Blizzard laziness, the explosions do not always line up with where the meteor vanishes, and the area in which they'll knock you off your mount is noticeably bigger than the explosion animation. I find that the meteors never seem to explode above him though, so directly above him seems to be the safest place. Be careful not to get too high though, as doing so counts as being too far behind, and you fail.

Either way, this one is pretty hideously difficult. Have something else to do during the frequent waits for him to crawl to the end of the runway.

Am I the only one who doesn't find this quest to be worth the effort? The races leading up to this one were great, but a riding crop is not a great reward for a quest that it's a good idea (not necessary though) to have a riding crop on while doing it to begin with.

Honestly, the 1000 rep is great, but considering rep grinding for this faction is so easy to do in the first place - this quest is hardly worth the effort and meaningless/unnecessary aggravation it creates to achieve the goal.

This is really the only quest in the game, it seems, that it takes a double-digit number of attempts to complete; and doesn't offer a reward that merits its difficulty.

What I would recommend for this quest is to download the mod called ImprovedCamera to be able to zoom out a larger distance, and therefore get a better view of where he's flying. Get in front of him and cut his turns. Didn't take me long and without help too (other than the mod ofcourse!).

Dragonmaw race quests are the most entertaining quests I've completed by far. I have not yet managed to beat Skyshatter but just an advice, when you got aggravated, stop trying to do the quest for a while, because it takes all the fun part and since you get more distracted when you get angry, you wont be able to do quest therefore wasting a huge amount of time. This quest requires a good connection, a good memory, good control over your mouse and keyboard and preferably a riding crop :), nothing else.

By the way Skyshatter sometimes go in circles at the same location for around 30 seconds when doing this quest, towards the end. This is somehow pure luck as far as I know, because several times I experienced that sequence and most of the time I didn't. It's also noticable on youtube videos having different time lengths because of this difference during the flight sequence.

Is this quest still available after a person has reached Exalted with Netherwing? I'm very close to reaching Exalted through dailies alone (I didn't try Skyshatter very much after my first few fails), but I'd like to know if I'd be able to try him again even after I reach exalted, just for the sake of seeing if I can succeed.

absolutely doable without any and i mean it trinkets, auras, spurs.
I did it in my like 2nd try, i actually asked pala to help me with aura, i turned my UI off (alt+z) and i started, when i finished i wanted to say thx to pala, i turned my UI back and i was he said sorry coz he was knocked down at very beginning :D so have a little faith in yourself, dont think its impossible after few tries and gl :)

This is by far not easy. I have been working on this quest for over 2 hours. I have watched videos of others doing it, and I follow the tips, and yet i still get knocked off, or he goes outta range. There has been several times where i am right next to him and he disappears, and the quest is failed. I am going to continue trying. The best thing that has worked so far is staying in front of him like the video, but be careful because he does a juke in a few spots which will cause you to loose him if you are too far ahead.

But what about us poor people sitting on our mounts AFK ect around the area where skyshatter flies, remember you dont have to be doing the Quest to get knocked off your mount and fall to your death by one of his 100 fireballs >.< twice I have died from that before :P

Just a note:

Skyshatter is *very* bugged. He occasionally won't launch meteors where he normally would, he also occasionally does his meteor attack, but some of the meteors won't show (like the graphic is missing) but they can still knock you off your mount., he'll sometimes forget to shout, or give you his little message before the start, he'll random "waddle", by that I mean that he will be going, and all of a sudden he turns backwards, for a split second, and continue in the way he was originally going.

Just a head note, I haven't been able to finish this a few times because of the meteor bug, Ill be doing great, and all of a sudden im knocked off by an invisible meteor.

It took me at least 30 tries to do it without any speed buffs. Get to know his route and make sure you fly *in front* of him all of the time. You won't ever get meteors on you if you manage to do so.

This took me something like 75 tries (like 72 without riding crop)
Maybe I just got lucky but I can say this quest, as far as i can tell, is pretty impossible without a riding crop.

Tips:
1. On the first time dont try, just kind of try and memorize his flight path.
2. try to stay above and left of him.
3. When he makes his turns try to stay on the inside so you dont get to far behind.
4. Near the beginning in the crystals where he makes his second spin around do NOT follow him in,just stay above,ahead,and to the right.
5. He goes up several mountains so just go around the base instead of following him up the tip.
6. Do not fly to close to him because if you touch him it will dismount you.
7. At the beginning he does a U turn so just go about half way into the U and then turn back around and almost immediatly start flying for the top of the tower to the right of the runway.

I hope these help!

P.S.
If you are a druid you can just reshift if knocked off your mount, shouldn't take but a couple tries for you.

Also this quest is much easier if you are/with a paladin.

Lastely, don't try to put someone on follow and hae them do it for you, it won't work because when he dodges a ball you'll just be put where he was and get knocked off.

Much easier quest than Mulv's one.

You must remember about some things:

1. Don't fly behind him. Fly some at right or left.
2. He uses a lot more tricks than previous riders. He does some back-forward moves, and very often big dive in air. That can allow him to run off from you.
3. Noggenfogger Elixir helps here A LOT. Drink it until you'll be small, then accept quest. With that buff you can practily ignore meteors.

I did that quest at 3rd attempt, first with Noggenfogger buff. Good luck and have fun =)

Took me only 10 tries to beat this guy. I tried to find all sources of information on how to win the race, some good ones I've found:

- AddOn ImprovedCamera: Increases limit of the Max Camera Distance slider in Interface Options to the very maximum possible (from 30 to 50).

- Turn off your UI: Press alt+Z to turn off your interface, so everything on the screen disappears and you can see Skyshatter easier when he gets distance.

- Raid Mark him: Invite some guildmate or random guy to a party, so you can add a mark icon to his head. Personally I used the blue square.

- Buy a Riding Crop: If you're farming for your netherdrake, you surely have 60-100g to spend on a riding crop. It sucks that after you win this chain of quests you get a riding crop as a reward, but to beat mulverick and captain skyshatter you MUST have this, otherwise it gets close to impossible.

With the tips above, you can easily solo this guy. If you have friends, call them to be hit by his bolts instead of you, and a pally to give you crusader aura.

For me personally, I found this is too easy. Out of the 6, the 5th guy was the hardest because I have to stay out of range at the same time maintain my speed. For this guy, don't fly high over him or under him, fly either left or right to him. Without Crusader or a Riding Crop, I maintained to stay next to him the whole time even when he made u-turns. Another tip, don't fly too close. He discharges a little firestorm and it can be easily avoided. For those meteors, it hits like 5% of the time if you fly zig zag.

3 attempts at Skyshatter. 5 attempts Mulverick. 1 attempt the rest. It took me like an hour and 20 mins to finish the whole chain.

I would like to make some stuff clean if it is not yet:
1: Skyshatter do have an armored nether drake, but only 280% speed incrase, so he is not faster than you.
2:You do not need to be a pally or to have a riding crop, just did it with my hunter.
3:The best way to win this race is to stay in Front of him, as he drops the meteors behind himself, that way you wont get hurt. Still youll have to learn the path he flys, so it will take several trys, but this is the best way to show him who is the bos:)

I recomend everyone to do this quest nacked, so you would not loose any duration, as he likes to knock you of meanly, I allways died, fell down from the island.

I've done this quest twice, one for each of my lvl 70s with epic flying mounts. The first time I didn't use any riding speed enhancements. The 2nd time I remembered to keep my carrot on the stick for it. Yes it was a bitch to do, both times.

I like to think of this quest as a test of skill. I know quite a few people who have this quest but have never completed it, and still think they are "pro" at the game. The fact is, is that this quest is a solo quest that blizzard put in the game. Anyone who considers themselves pro shouldn't say a solo quest is too hard for them.

I have attempted this quest too many times to count, it really needs to be nurfed, Skyshatter just shoots way too many meteors, I've tried several different strategies to avoid them, but it is just too hard, and so not worth the effort.

Been doing this for four hours now without much luck. Been trying all kinds of strategies, flying in front of him, behind him, above him and under him, but sometimes I manage to get either hit by meteors or he just boosts away from me (even when I'm wearing pretty much every speed enhanching item / enchant in game). The previous opponents were very easy, got them all on one try. This truly is the hardest quest I've ever done in WoW, ever.

Completed it today *yay*. Used that addon (ImprovedCamera2, http://downloads.curse.com/details/5098/download/42290/ ) and also Noggenfogger to make me small. Wasn't that hard then, just sticked slightly behind and above him all time and followed him around. Had no paladin with me, but all other speed increasing elements I could find.

I found Skyshatter to be about as hard as Mulv. Shorter path, less tricky, but avoiding the meteors seemed more random. A couple pointers:

1) As others have said, you need to stay closer to Skyshatter than the other riders. Dunno why, but that's how it is. So rather than tracking the flight from above like I did with Mulv, I tried to stay roughly side-by-side with Skyshatter, with him being a bit ahead because I hadn't memorized his route. Only a few of the meteors were problematic from this angle, I sporadically hit "jump" to avoid them.

2) He moves about as fast as you do with a riding crop, so the way to keep up with him while still having room to manuever is to be able to cut corners when he turns. It helps to know the route for this, but it's not necessary.

3) The hardest part, I believe, is about 2/3 of the way through when Mulv climbs up the highest mountain in the middle of the isle. I had previously tended to use "jump" to ascend rather than actually pointing up or down, and so my trying to follow him by doing so meant that I couldn't jump to shake the meteors.. and so I got hit by one and died. Next try I actually angled up and still used jump, but jump isn't as effective for shaky movements when you're rising. Still, it helped and that was the attempt I beat him.

Best way to do this is to fly in circles behind him. Not huge circles, but click both mouse buttons and just move in circles behind him. Avoid moving in straight lines at all times. (only if you seem to fall behind due to circles, and if thats the case, your circles are a little too large) I maybe got 4 spells casted the whole time. I've given the advice out on the Lothar server and at least 10 people got it on first or second shot.

finally beat him. not because i memorized his flight path. it's just damn simple: change viewing distance to max. This does everything. I beat him with the first try with max distance.

he does 360 turning drill twice. The first one is actually pretty long and with tons of fire balls, about 10-20 seconds. with max distance, all you need to do is stay on top of him.

For people who come here, read these comments, and are worried that they're going to have to memorize the whole race, let me reassure you that it's entirely possible to do this one "normally". I just did it with normal epic mount + riding crop and it only took a few tries. Here's some hints that help:

1.) Make up distance on his long wide turns.
2.) If you're fairly close to him avoiding the fireballs is easy. In fact, the times I failed were all because he got too far away. I was never dismounted. Strafe left, strafe right, jump are all you really need.
3.) The hardest part of the race by far (if you don't have it memorized, which I didn't) is staying close when he does his little "stop, turn, go in some other direction" moves. It's very easy to lose track of him. Keep him targetted. He looks very similar to the other riders around the island.

He is truly annoying!!! I got exalted with netherwing about a month ago and i still cant finish this quest. I must be not that kind of "speedy gonzales" dude o_O Always try it like an hour every day until now. I try to stay close to him, dodge the meteor, but somehow, when it goes to "straight", he always left me behind and got failed on that quest. And yea, Crop really helps a lot...

Unfortunately, a lot of the comments and tactics listed here dont make sense until you can or have beaten Skyshatter. However, here's a play by play of how I beat him without a riding crop, or wingman:

Takeoff: Skyshatter goes left and swings around in a loop back towards the runway. Fly forward and drift to the right, about half the distance he does. When he finishes the corner, turn aorund and lead him back across the runway.

First Turn: As you pass the tower, Skyshatter will catch up to you. Drift above him and to his left and follow him with the camera (side strafing you move just as fast, that's how I watched him and kept up). When he turns left into the first corner, turn left too and you're back out in front.

First Straightaway: Skyshatter will start high and drop low. Stay centered at a medium altitude and you wont lose too much ground. At the southeast corner of the island he will swing north. At that point, he will be caught up again, so again drift above him and to his left, and turn when he does to stay out in front.

The Mountains, Third and Fourth Turns: There are two large hills he passes, the first one, stay on his inside and hug the hill to keep your lead, you'll pass over the second hill at about the same time as Skyshatter. Keep on his left and above him through two quick turns, and move to his right and above him once you're headed south.

Turn Five, and the Gulch: On the fifth turn, if you're close to falling behind, go over the cliff edge and cut the corner to get out ahead. If you're not definitavely ahead of Skyshatter through the Gulch, you'll probably be hit by an invisible meteor and be dismounted.

The Loop: Coming out of the Gulch and into a wide loop over the Netherwing base, Skyshatter tends to get buggy and backtrack often, keep an eye out and make sure you dont get too far ahead. He's turning north so the inside is on his right, stay on it and above him, but dont cut too far inside or you'll get too far ahead.

Flayer Plateau: Next he'll go up and over the Plateau in the middle of the island. Staying above him is more important than ahead of him, just dont fall too far behind that you lose. You can catch up in the next leg. He also has a tendency to backtrack a lot in this area, both now and on the way back.

The Turnaround: Coming off the Plateau he'll turn north and do a couple s-turns and swing back around south towards the plateau. Honestly, every time I ran it I lost track of his positioning in this area, but I stayed above and behind him, and when I was sure he was headed south again I cut out in front to retake the lead.

Home Stretch: He'll cross the Plateau again and drop down towards the north end of the runway. Again, I tended to lose him here, and at least twice I panicked and got too close, only to be shot down here. Just try not to fall behind, and stay above him. If you are going to pick a side, stay to his left I think. He'll swing out north of the runway and then cut in. If you're south of him and get shot down, you should complete the quest before you fail it as long as you land near the runway.

Did run naked, took me many tries, but that's the path that got me there. Good luck to those trying it.

A Parachute cloak is HIGHLY recommended for these quests, the engineering one is perfect since it only has 30 seconds cooldown, and will save your butt, but most likely your gold.

the only thing you need to do, is wear your cloak, and move the icon to a hotkey, take will help you react faster when you are falling, rather than clicking on the icon in your inventory.

i would suggest using noggenfogger to become small so the fireballs will have a smaller chance to hit you and also racing naked saves u lots of repair bills because u WILL DIE alot

Here's another little tip, use noggerfogger elixir to make yourself smaller, it really does a big difference, atleast to me because i got really annoyed of how big the damn orcs are on netherdrakes and with noggenfogger & alt+z (interface removal) it's alot smoother ^^

I've finally managed to complete this quest, after sixty or seventy tries (I lost count).

In the end, my winning strategy was to memorise the entire route and try to stay above and in front of him. While this strategy helps to avoid the fireballs, it also makes things tricky because sometimes he momentarily backs up on himself, thus making you fly out of range (failing the quest). The only solution here is to, again, memorise his flight pattern and pause briefly when you anticipate this move.

After you reach the flayer plateau his flight pattern becomes even more erratic and unpredictable. I managed to beat this stage by flying quite far above him (but not far enough to get out of range) so that the fireballs would spawn under me instead of right in my face.

A very frustrating quest.

I didn't want to buy a speed trinket for this since the reward was identical to riding crop.Kept trying, failing over 20 times, at 280% but either i would lose him trying to avoid the meteors or getting hit by the meteors while trying to stick to him.Eventually i got fed up with failing, bought a raiding crop and made it with 1st try.That trinket made a huge difference

This quest was extremely easy after I realized what you have to do. First thing is that I had the riding crop on, all the rest of my gear in my bags to save the durability loss. This only took me one try, I zoomed the camera out as far as I could, alt-z to remove my bars, used my "w" key for forward and used my mouse right click to control all the movements. Basically once you're following him all you do is weave up and down every second continuously through his flight and the meteors will never hit you and keep on him during his many quick turnarounds. Hope this helps!

Took me like.. 10-15 tries.

Hardest quest I've ever done. 90% of my tries I got no further than the first 20 seconds, last time I tried I thought "Meh I'm gonna lose anyway" So I was really reckless and just flew constantly in front of him with my camera facing him and my UI off. Always turn your UI off, even if its a custom minimal one like mine.

Luckily I completed this quest, tomorrow I will have my drake, 18500/21000 at the moment :)

I think I will use my Riding Crop over this, Its served me well.

It took me a couple of times.
The key to my success was turning the view to first person.
You will not be distracted by the fireballs that are already passed you and you will have a better view on what is really coming your way. I am also convinced that you will see more depth perspective between you and the fire casts.
It was a piece of cake, staying behind him and staving/jumping besides some of the meteors/fire.

No crop.
No learning track.

This quest isn't hard when compared to Mulverick. Mulv has his attacks homing on you and this guy doesn't. He throws a ton of meteors but they move straight (doesn't home in on you) and it is easy to avoid them while going straight on with him.

I did it on my 2nd try and had no prior experience nor did I watch any videos. Granted I wiped 10x on Mulv and that taught me a lot.

Cut corners (its easy to judge where he is turning as he ain't as tricky as Mulv) and dodge the meteors simply by strafing and/or moving up and down a little. I did it with a riding corp and no pally aura. (TBH, Mulv felt like a faster flier to me cause I had to move a lot to dodge and keep a far range)

The whole flight is like that except for 1 tricky point. At around the area where Barash the Den Mother roams, he will make 4 U-turns back and forth in quick succession, making something like a small tight "O". He will continually release meteors so you'd be facing PLENTY of them. At this point, stay focused and keep dodging, you don't have to follow him as his sharp U-turns mean you won't be out of range and fail the quest. After about 4 tight elongated circles he will move forward and you should quickly follow him.

At this point just keep doing what you have been and you win.

Mulv's a lot worse, imo.

(Sidenote: I heard from a druid that they could no re-enter flight form when in combat which happens due to those irritating flying pats, so druids go naked as well to save gold)

Ofc its alittel bit safer to use riding crop but when the price is the same why buy it?

The riding crop is a MUST for this race.

Alt-Z the screen, use max distance for camera view, and fly behind him in tight circles and cut corners whenever possible. The tight circles cause him to NOT throw ANY fireballs at you. Druids that can shapeshift have it fairly easy. If anything, get someone to fly in front of you in circles to absorb the fireballs that may somehow come. I have helped a ton of people on Lothar this way.

I beat all of the other races in one try. I lost count on how many times I attempted this particular one.

To beat him, I personally did not use the alt+z interface thing that everyone suggests. It may help others more, but it looked very strange to me. Plus, I got to target Skyshatter and view this icon pops up under his name, alerting when he's about to throw crap at you.

It also helps to see a youtube video of the race and memorize the path so you don't lose track of him when you get in front.

Mmmmk, I just want to start out by saying this quest just plain sucks. I started out by goin to all the posts and guides, but they failed to mention some stuff.

Requirements:

Epic flyer (obvious)
not much lag
crapload of luck

and thats about it :)

When you first start the race Skyshatter runs off the runway and does a U turn and flies back over the runway at low altitude, i found the best thing to do was to wait at the center point of his U-turn and wait for him to start turning back. When he is getting to the point wer he will be flying back towards the runway you want to be flying towards the rear of the airstrip.

Skyshatter then flies towards one of the mine entrances and then heads to the other end of the island. I found what worked for me was to fly to one of the spires of rock nearby, which kept me on the inside of his loop, and then intercept his flight to then other side of the island. The key to this part is to stay ahead of him until you get to a cliff with a large crystal jutting out of it. If you are losing space between you and skyshatter, this is a good spot to regain some distance ( don't get to far ahead!)

Next skyshatter heads to the very tall mountain thingy and flies up it at a very steep angle. If you can make it this far the rest is pure luck ! After skyshatter reaches the top he goes on a horizontal curve in the general direction of the dock then goes back to the ravines that are near were you just came from. Remember to stay in the curve and stay in front of him to avoid meteors.

Skyshatter snakes through the ravines until he reaches the town. Next he will gain altitude and go around the really big rock thing. After he rounds this he heads towards the ravagers, gaining altitude very fast. This is probably the hardest part. Once he reaches the highest point of his flight, he boomerangs back and forth on the way down. Once he reaches the landing pad, don't get to comfortable, he tends to freak out and launch meteors everywhere.

This race takes a lot of luck, he can double back at anytime, forcing you to fail.

If you completed this, grats! This took me about 5 hours to do, with only an epic flyer. I found it helpful to mark skyshatter with a raid target icon. ( need a group for this). Noggen Foggers also helped, but wer not required. Remeber to take breaks and stay ahead of him.

OK guys i got a trick that worked on mulv and this dude too..... what u have to do is spend some time learning their route(not memorize just learn it) the real trick is to stay in front of him and about 10 yards above him. the projectiles have no chance at hitting u like that the only prob is that he is faster than u and he will bypass u if u dont cut corners. when he does that quick turn around just stay there for 2 sec and then keep moving

HOPE that helps takes some time but better than moving left and right hoping they dont hit u.

I failed I dont know how many times but I decided to do some studing up and found this video of this guy that shows you the last two races (Hardest ones) and how to beat them. Anyways the hardest one if of course this one but with the video you just memorize his flight path which is completly a sinch as long as you stay in front of him.

-all he does is flies out and does a U turn back to the strip
-then on the southern rim going east
-once at docks turn back to the rim but this time through the mounatians back to camp and runway
-after run way bust a right around the hill and straight up to the highest mountian and then norhth east from the tip.
-he then busts a U back to the highest tip
-then back to the first U turn at the begining
-then back to the walk way.

I beat him this morning. I swore to myself that after I finished it I was going to hop on here and post that it was sheer stupid frickin' luck that beat him.

But it wasn't. I don't know how many losses I had from trying to learn his route, trying flying above him, below him, IN him, everything. Dismount. Too far. Dismount. Too far. Too far. Dismount and fall off the world. Jeezus it ticks me off just remembering it.

But then I had the flight that beat him.

I followed him the whole flight, right behind him and just a little below his flight level. When the "buff" of that guys face shows up, he's about to chuck some fireballs. Just strafe left and right a little, because if you're right behind him they are coming straight down. Now it helps a lot that I could fly his route in FRONT of him I knew it so well, but I have my crop and a nice 1000 extra reputation, and bragging rights.

But I can't say it was dumb Fing luck. I just flew behind him and dodged fireballs. If you can find some extra fingers to cross, that will probably help. In no way shape or form was it easy--but it's not luck. You have to find a spot in relation to him that you're comfortable flying.

Oh, and the downside to flying in front of him is that he will occasionally pull 180s on you, and you have almost no time to turn around and keep him in range.

Aside from all problems with this quest, he's faster then you with a 280% flying mount. And you need stay closer then you needed untill now. The worst part isn't his shots, but he'll leave you behind unless you have a Riding Crop. But, hey, the reward for beating him IS a Riding Crop! Hey, Blizzard, WAKE UP!
I really don't recomend do this quest for the rep, since 1000 rep you can get with 4 daily quests.. Or 4 eggs..

OMG I just did all 6 of these quests in 45 mins. This last one I think was the easiest of them all. One thing though... have a riding crop equiped to give you that extra speed advantage so you can keep up easier.

Also the last guy did get away from me once. It's not a bug he just flys faster then a normal epic flyer and if you dont cut corners and stay close to him the quest will fail because you were too far away from him. I found the best place to stay was on the land side of him... IOW if he is flying on the outside of the land be further inland then he is.

Also if you are learning the flights take off your armor so you will not incur a repair cost.

Also some people report to be hit by nothing. This is untrue. The last 4 flying quests the guys you chase after leave clouds of vapor or fire that if you fly through you will be knocked off your mount. The only way you can see these spots is if you have your spell detail turned all the way up. I hit one of these and noticed that I was on fire while I fell out of the air. I turned this setting up and you can see the clouds form around the guys while they are flying and then float off behind them as they go. The way around this is to stay above them while they fly. A good distance above them. They will also not be able to hit you with the thrown objects if you are high enough. Just dont fly so high that you fail the quest.

Took me about 2-3 hrs to beat him
First few times I didn’t even get past the strip and his initial U Turn. 10 second ride and it was all over

Best recommendation is get Noggenfrogger elixars (A Riding Crop is a must). After I drunk the Elixar I made it the western end of the island, sort of ½ way around the course on my first go

I failed most times because I let him get too far ahead of me. Failed once when I got knocked off right near the end, remounted and failed as he was landing. Failed once when he was approaching the landing strip. Failed once as he was landing. All because I was to far away from him. So frustrating. You need to be a lot closer than Mulverick.

Skyshatter has 2 attacks. Fireballs he shoots at you and also a fire cloud he emits. The cloud is more dangerous

I followed him at a similar height as him, but behind him and not to the sides. The fireballs came from a uniform direction if I was behind him. If I was to once side of him the fireballs seemed to come from angles and were harder to dodge. All I had to use was the spacebar mostly to dodge them, strafe a bit but not much. Sort of the tatics I used on the first 4 riders. After the flyover of the camp I tended to stay above him more as it was easier to follow his loopbacks, but be careful not to get too far away from him

Ok I have a paladin who is my main and I did this quest the 1st try because of crusader aura. I had more of a problem w/ Mulveric than this guy, so when i Finally got to the same point on my lock I figured I wouldnt have trouble w/ Skyshatter but I was wrong. The speed increase from crusader aura did make a HUGE difference because the quest fails easy because of distance. I watched the video and learned the path, but unless you really wanna study the video and really goof around w/ the flying method used in the video I would just grab something for a speed increase of your mount. I made a riding crop even though I know it wont stack w/ the quest reward and I beat him easily the 2nd try, I wouldve beat him the first but I forgot about the part towards the end where he REALLY tries to ditch you. The dude ticked me off to the point where I didnt care about making a crop, im just trying for the damn mount and any rep helps. To those of you who did w/out any speed increase- Kudos to you beitches thats well worth a applause =)

A couple of people have mentioned the use of the Noggenfogger Elixir... DO IT! I failed about five times, never even following him for the first 30 seconds before being knocked off. Shrunk myself with the Noggenfogger's, and beat him on the second attempt. The first attempt was going well until he switched direction on me. My advice is to stop in mid-air when he changes direction and watch him for a second. He'll come back almost immediately. What I did notice is that he will switch back randomly, so from one run to the next don't expect the same pattern. Being minuscule certainly helps though. One thing's for sure, he can be beat!

It took me over 20 tries to get the damn thing done, but one thing that did make a noticeable difference was to use noggenfoggers to make yourself small. It's alot easier to dodge both him and the meteors when your the size of a puppy XD.

I also used a riding crop, but I already had it, so I'm not sure if it's completely necessary to buy one just for the quest, but I'm sure it makes it easier.

Every forum I've visited has said to stay in front of him the entire time, but I actually found that too hard. I tried that method, and if you don't know every intricate turn, dip, rise, and turn-around, you'll end up having him run into you and dismounting you. I found it a lot easier to stay slightly behind but more beside him the entire way. When you see him making a corner just cut it and try to stay beside him the best you can without losing too much distance. If you used a noggenfogger to make yourself smaller, you'll find the meteors not really that big of a problem anymore. When he starts turning back and forth at the flayers hill, just watch him and keep flying and use that time to catch up if you were getting behind.

There's some practice involved with this method, but it's just what worked for me. I just kept doing it until I was about to puke on my keyboard and then the next time I tried I actually made it XD

Wish he wouldn't yell out who is about to do the quest when you start. Kinda embarrassing when I see random people following and watching me fall to my death somewhere lol

this quest isnt so hard if youve done enough bombing runs in ogrila to be able to do it without getting shot down.. because this is almost just like it.

took me a few tries (and a few beers), but i finally did it. all i did was follow right behind him, probably 3-4 netherdrake's lengths behind him. all you do is fly right behind him, and when you see the meteors comin down, just move out of their path. strafing is a must. dont just turn in air, keep that right mouse button mashed (if you use the mouse to turn, which you really should anyways) and dodge them as they come down. simple.

i only had to pull any kind of crazy flight maneuvers out when he decided to go back and forth like 4 times. as long as you stay a safe distance behind him and stay focused (using your peripheral vision really helps), then its just like dodging flak in BEM. even easier in a lot of cases. most of.. just relax~

dunno if it helps, but i was listening to Without Me, by Eminem when i was doing this lol.

I won't downplay the difficulty... I spent a good long time trying and failing the last two races. I did the first 4 without any real effort so when Mulv gave me soo much trouble (and then this one) I was pissed, especially since racing games are my first true love.

My advice... (for mulv was)- get naked... at least take off anything with durability.
- always move... whenever Mulv sends things your way do 3 direction changes(while continuing forward). I go right-up, then down and then left-up.
- i see a lot of people suggesting you stay above Mulv. I found this to make it more difficult I choose to fly off to his side.
- You need a speed boost... riding crop or crusaders aura
- 360s... these can be devasting in your mind but i never once was knocked off during this move. go up fly in circles and keep your eye on the prize.
- be patient... this is above all the most important thing. Getting frustrated and pissed off is your biggest enemy on this and the next race. The moves are simple and methodical since there's no way of knowing if a phantom bolt is going to hit you, you just need to follow your best pattern and keep trying.

The Things I changed for Skyshatter was...- I picked up some Noggenfogger Elixir get a couple stacks you'll have to drink anyplace from 3-7 times to get yourself shrunk down. I managed to finish off sky with one stack but i had already practices for a good hour before i started using it.
- and you need to cut corners whenever possible. Skyshatter is faster and you have to stay closer. The distances that were okay on the other racers will not cut it here. I failed this race more times for distance than I did for getting knocked off my mount. this distance is referred to as a bug in some discussions about this... its not a bug you need to stay closer! Distance is key!
- Lastly don't wait to race again... for starters you only get 10 minutes with Noggenfogger Elixir so rush back and start the next race. If you took damage you can eat AFTER starting the race, these guys take forever to start could eat to full health 2 or 3 times easy before they take off.

I found Skyshatter to be easier than Mulv... but I also had a lot of practice when doing Mulv... my final suggestion don't wait after Mulv to finish this chain! Keep going while the going is good!

Finishing this chain was a big achievement in my book... I timed it so Mulv and Skyshatter were my final stepping stones into Exalted so I got the Skybreaker Whip and my Onyx Mount all at once! I know this whip is no better than the riding crop but I've got to admit it's nice knowing I earned it rather than just bought it!

PS - This isn't the smart way to get your mount or rep... I'll admit that all the races put together I probably killed 8 hours maybe a little more on these races. The biggest reason to do this... the only reason to do this... is so you can say you did it!

This quest also has the "hit by nothing" problem. Seems to be a trend with the flying quests. Bombing through all the fel flak in Ogri'la has the same problem, though the pace is slow enough to be tolerable. This one... yea... *cough* a bit of a load.

Learning the route is one thing, keeping the distance is another. Basically established myself some head check runs where I'm unlikely to hit anything or do a course adjustment. I find Skyshatter and release the forward key a bit at a time to set the max distance I'm comfortable with. The bugger's faster so he'll close the gap (most of the time). Other than that, be sure you're within range for any turns he does. That and not to go so far ahead you need to stop for a bit. That's about the time Skybreakers find you. Or the meteors. Seriously the collision detection is just not up to scratch with the lag of anything over 150ms.

And "Rain of Meteors"? Why would it rain sideways specifically in your direction? Not to mention "hit" some distance from the ground and explode?

And despite not having completed it at time of posting, I can surely say that this, and the one before it, are complete wastes of time. You will likely earn 500G by the time this is done (100G to the riding crop) and all the rep you could have gotten from all the dailies. These races are far too broken to be considered "fun" and overcoming the "adversity" is plain bull. I'd find it more rewarding to make Blizz fix this farce.

The distance limit is just far too tight. Given the invisible hits, a concession to the likes of being able to fall off and have time to summon your bird and keep going is more than reasonable.

EDIT: The "back and forth" thing appears to be a little random and possibly due to a lag at the server saying thedragon was meant to be somewhere behind where it's shown on the screen and results in the mob doubling back and forth while the computer and the server argue. ... In which case it appears to be a little less broken. Very little.

after reading most posts at some forums about this chain it seems that i tend to agree with some that say that its not worth it, the time to learn the route that he takes, the tries ur gonna do, the frustration ur gonna surely have after some invisible meteors hit u or if he bugs and cause the q to fail... im guessing blizz might fix it at some point, till then, ill keep the "!" above Mulveric's head and my head at peace instead of wanting to bang it on the keyboard:P

Easy summary for people playing Classic!

There are 4 tiers of speed enhancements. These tiers DO NOT STACK WITH EACH OTHER, so if you have a better tier, you cannot get any of the bonuses from any of the lower tiers.

Tier A: Paladin's Crusader Aura (+20% mounted speed), given at level 62 in TBC.
Tier B: Paladin's Pursuit of Justice, Talent 3/3 (+15% mounted speed AND on-foot runspeed), requires 13 points in the Retribution talents. NOTE: Before TBC, in vanilla, it was only +8% speed and required 12 points.
Tier C1: Trinket Pattern: Riding Crop (+10%), created by leatherworkers. Despite what you may think, it DOESN'T stack with ANY other items/enchants (from the lower tiers).
Tier C2 ("Free" Alternative): Trinket Skybreaker Whip (+10%, Quest Reward), gained by learning Epic Flying at level 70, becoming Honored with the Netherwing, and defeating all of their races in the sky and defeating the final quest, Dragonmaw Race: Captain Skyshatter (something a lot of players give up on due to the difficulty of beating the racers).
Tier D: The "vanilla WoW solution": Carrot on a Stick (+3%, Quest Reward) and Formula: Enchant Gloves - Riding Skill (+2%) and Plans: Mithril Spurs (+4%) = Around 9%, but not exactly due to how multipliers stack, but it's less than 10%.

It took me 3 shots.
First time he turned around 10 second in and I got stuck in a lightening bolt and lost him.
Second time I listened to advice about waiting for him to do a U turn and lost him 3 second in.
Third time I drank 8 noggenfoggers until I went small. I mainly stayed below him and was hit by about 5 blasts.
Maybe it was a lot of luck, but I am sure the small part was the best thing I did.

It took me about 10-15 attempts on Mulverick.

Just finished on my second attempt as a BM Hunter with the Riding Crop. My main piece of advise is this: If you can, stick on his left side, about 6 yards out. I was very rarely targeted by the blasts, maybe hit 3 or 4 times, and it lets you adjust you his movements on the fly, angling right if he is turn right and angling left if he's turning left. This placement allows you to keep pace with him while, at the very end, cutting in front of his path to move into first place right before the finish line.

You'll want to have one of the below:
a) Riding Crop
b) Mithril Spurs + Glove Enchant + Carrot on a Stick
c) Crusader Aura

After trying for over an hour with no success, I went with Mithril Spurs + Glove Enchant which gave me 6% increased speed. I was able to just barely beat him with these. I think the best advice I can give is to try to memorize his route (it's always the same) and always be ahead of him. If you are, the bombs won't hit you. Careful though, the allowable range that you can be from him is small and the quest will fail you if you go too far. If he catches up to you (which is likely), try to stay 5-10 ft away from him on his side to reduce how often you will be hit with bombs.

With no riding enhancements this is borderline impossible. The quest NPC travels faster then 280%, so if you are at base mount speed, he will constantly outrun you. In addition, the bombs are difficult to avoid and will either slow you down or knock you to the ground if you are hit.

Definitely possible to be done without any external buffs. Just did as a mage without any trinkets or enchants in 5 tries.

Just learn his pattern, hardest part is the first 3rd then it gets fairly easy. Try to always be on the inside of his turns and you will always end up in front of him. Fireballs can get a bit tricky but as long as he doesn't hit you twice in a row you should never fall to the ground.

Without buffs its not possible to do this. I'm not sure how blizzard intended people to do this with 280% flying back in the day Lol

It is good that old Blizzard is no more because if this quest was made by a current employee they would have to take him out back and have him shot. This is dog #$%^. The idea of having a race, where the path is arbitrary and not laid out, and where the other racer randomly shoots invisible projectiles and have an opponent that changes speed from snail to twice your speed while punishing the player for not clipping into the enemy is just so bonkers stupid. I suspect the person who made this quest made it on his last day after getting fired as a final !@#$ you to Blizzard. There can not be any other explanation for this.

Jfc what is wrong with blizz, quests like this make me realise how much better blizzard/retail is now - which is really saying something considering how bad both of them are....
Seriously people saying you don't get dismounted? how tf did I go from 50m in the air and 15 yards in front of him to helplessly plummeting while being thrown at about 500% speed away from him?
I'll tell you how: a quest which was clearly never tested besides perhaps by one paladin... Also really highlights the stupidity of removing flying bonuses once you turn lvl 71... I kinda prefer to believe this is just typical Blizz trolling its playerbase... right?
