While the quest is elite, it is easy to solo. The azsharite formations are located on the southern penninsula of the zone, from about 48-72 (x), to 76-92 (y). The only trick is to avoid the elite giants running around, but it isn't too hard.

You don't really need the felhound tracker for this quest, though it can help. The azsharite formations are the various blue crystals (both in petrified adventurer and regular crystal shapes) around the southern peninsula -- just right-click them as you would any other usable object, and you can loot some azsharite (and, on occasion, a funny Crystalized Note as well).

easier path to the souther peninsula from the quest giver is to swim directly to 58,73. From there run forward and go left, you'll see an uphill.

The Felhound Trackers seem to be bugged, half the time I roar at them they sniff and growl but just stays in the same place even if there are no azsharite nearby.
As mentioned above you don't need the trackers to find the azsharite though, they're scattered all over the place.

It appears that whenever you're in a place where there's no Azsharite nearby, the Felhound Tracker just growls.

So no, it probably isn't a bug. Run around a bit and /roar again. Some of the Azsharite formations are located behind the rock, etc. so it is definitely faster to utilize the Felhound Trackers along with one's own pair of eyes.

For those who don't know what the Felhound Tracker is for, he sniffs out the crystals, which only helps you locate them -- as said above, he is not required to collect them.

When you /roar at him, he'll run to the nearest crystal formation (after a couple second pause) and do a growl emote. If not, he'll stand in place and growl anyway.

Once again, he is not required to collect the azsharite. You do that yourself like any other gathering quest.

This is a quest in a chain of 23 that runs pretty much all over the map.
However, it all starts with the Fallen Hero of the Horde.

Doesn't look like these respawn after you collect them so you can't camp around a few. Found one down at 50,87 and 48,88

They are all nicely distributed on the "higher" part. So get away from the beach, upwards.
Inbetween the wandering Giants you'll find that &*!@ all around...collecting lasts 10 minutes or so...if you don't search at the beach, like I did...

this struck me as a hilarious quest. the crystal are the fecal waste of the cliff wanderers(big rock guys). some of the formations are humanoid shaped(even found a troll one). I looted one of the humanoids and got a crystalized note drop. OMG, hilarious note! written by a guy in the stomach of a giant.

now i get the item crystallized azsharite

This is where you get the crystals for the quest the Succubus gives you in BRD's bar, if you are down there pick up that quest and these together! kill the giants and pick up their droppings lol!

USE EVERY PART OF THE GIANT!

But yes they are destinguishable by their human looking form. They look like blue statues and are on the top part of the land in the southern peninsula with ALOT of lvl 53-55 elite giants walking around.

I'm sorry if I'm being stupid or ignorant, but ; Do you only get XP and gold as rewards for this long quest? And why is it set up with lvl60 in the early stages? I'm now about to commence on 'demon hunter' - but being a lameass and checktoomuchthott - I wonder if it's really all worth it? Uneless for the fun fights, and the lore, and the travelling (who doesn't like travelling?), and the money and the XP. Do I really? Iz there maybe rep. involved?

okay heres how to find the azsharite crystals :

go to 51,71 and go up the hill, now you are on the cliffs, this is where the cliff breakers (53-55 elite) guys are, these guys %^&* the azsharite ;)
here u can use the felhound the quest giver gave to u, but he will only go and find crystals if u are pretty close to them so i dont know if hes really useful.

okay i hope this helps.

Dont go search on the beaches or in the water u wont find anything, these crystals are up on the hill.

Done this as lvl 56 druid its easy imo just stealth and search for them roar alot at the beast and it helps you find some thats for sure you get another quest after this

I found a spot where there is like 6 or 7 of the Crystallized Azsharite co-ords are 60,87

The Trackers aren't strictly necessary, as you'll find plenty of the stuff yourself - but the terrain is rough, it's easy enough to walk past azsharite without seeing it, and the Trackers will find ones that you might miss.

In the process, you'll probably find humanoid-shaped nodes. Two of these dropped "Crystalized Note"s for me, which were quite amusing:

I actually couldn't make the felhound search despite roaring at him, so then I just looked around the southern Ashzara area
where the mountain giants roam and turns out you don't need the stupid felfound kit to find them. Just search in that area and you can loot the blue crystals that will yield the quest item without any problems.

I thought the felhound tracker was fun. Here's how it works.

Find a spot that you want to search ... anywhere along the top of the southern ridge will work.

1. Select the felhound tracker - you must roar AT the tracker ... just a general roar won't work.
2. Do /roar
3. The tracker will sense for arcane energy.
4. If it doesn't find any, it will Growl ... "growl" means "didn't find any"

5. If it finds a crystal it will run there. If there are mobs in the way it will run past them. (It does not aggro them, however, it seems to be neutral to everyone.) If it needs to go down a cliff, it will.

So sometimes you cannot just follow it to the crystal ... you have to take your own path to where you think the hound went.

You can create 5 hounds from the orb, so if you lose one, just make another one.

True, it's faster just to run to the coords and grab crystals, but I thought the hunt ... and also avoiding the giants ... was entertaining.

I just collected all 20 crystals. I managed to destroy my Felhound and I got now help on that.

This is how I do it: I Climed up on the hills on the path starting at location 52,74.

On top I turned south and start collecting the crystals. I noticed the best place for collecting was on the very edge of the leap. There are some narrow "fingers" and on all those I found crystals on couple of places. When the was anymore Giants, or crystals, I run back to my starting point and start collecting on the other way (north).

Strategy: If u see crystal, kill Thunderhead first, try to avoid Elite Giant, collect crystals and move foward, following the edge of the leap. Respawn rate of crystal seemes to be very slow, so waiting for respawn is not too good stategy. Thunderhead and Giant are respawning faster and random place area near you.

I found crystals on these locations: 46,69 (2 pcs); 46,70; 47,71; 48,70; 49,70; 50,80; 53,78; (2 pcs); 56,78; 59,79; 59,90; 60,79; 60,83; 60,86; 61,84; 61,89; 62,85; 62,87 and 64,86

To answer whether or not you can keep the felhound as a pet after the quest.

The orb has a duration of 2hours, each beast has a duration of 30min and you get five charges total. And you can only use the orb in Azshara.

You don't really need to use it at all, but it is cute to watch the little hound run after the crystals. It would also be worthless to keep as a pet even if you could keep it longer and use it outside of Azshara, all it does is sniff out the crystals. This is all in the manual you are given in the quest btw.

I loved this quest =] The felhunter is absolutely adorable and the manual is funny as well.
I've found three humanish-shaped ones and two notes; hopefully I don't have to give up the orb and / or manual!

I had no problem finding the crystals and I also see that you wouldn't need the felguard to find them. They are in open site. Easy quest and alot of exp.

I did this quest chain as a level 59 holy priest. I can't see it being hard for anyone at that rate LOL

I just hugged the cliffs (from the top side, not the beach) and they were strung all along the cliff edges and clustered a bit around the bridges. It's like a very long, frustrating easter egg hunt. With elite giants.
Also don't swim over to the peninsula tip and THEN try to get up, use the slope over by the graveyard - southwest of Thalipedes' island.

These are all over the top of the hill near the Questgiver.
Din't use the felhounds to track it, as there was plenty to find. Hardest part was dodging the 55 elite cliff giants, and the Named dragon nearby. (Azureous)

There are plenty of them around 47,75 and you don't have to kill a single giant to get them. Giants are slow and predictable and, at level 59 at least, their aggro range is very short. Just be patient and plan your moves in advance.

Of course, keep an eye on your back, because Azuregos isn't fun.

there is plenty of them around, i didnt need the hond for a single crystal - indeed, i found them faster than the hound. the giants will barely attack you.

funny enough, some of the azsharites are shaped like little trolls frozen while praying ^^

uh and when you got all twenty - its a bad idea to simply jump off the cliffs - for its at least 2840 dmg (that was my max hp) ...

Try using all the charges at once, the nabandoning and re-getting the quest. Repeat until you're sick of it.

I think I had around 150 felhounds following me around...

I laughed myself silly the first time that I read the manual, but this turned out to be a rather easy quest. After you summon the felhound, the crystals can be found all over the place in the area between Lake Mennar and Ravencrest Monument and towards the Southern cliffs. The hounds don't actually find crystals and lead you to them, they just follow you around and get in the way when you're fighting the giants. I did this with a 57 druid friend, so we had no trouble killing the giants and that actually made the quest more entertaining, otherwise it's no different from herb gathering. The only thing I did wrong was get curious talk to Azuregos ... me being a squishie, he one-shot me at lvl 58 ^_^;;

you need to be on TOP of the cliffs directly south of the quest giver, there you will find the crystals randomly around the place no need to use the Felhounds.

I looked about for ages and swam to all the islands but found my first piece at 57, 80. Not saying there's lots here just that's where I found my first piece.

A random drop called, Crystallized Note, says the troll was eatten by a cliff giant (in its belly) and 'pooped' out crystalized.

Given the nature of the landscape, breadcrumbs would be handy to prevent one from visiting the same location oh, about three times from three different locations - lots of bridges etc. 55, 87 and 52, 85 were two sites where the crystals were grouped -one dropped a crystallised note (written by some poor sod who was becoming fossilised as he/she wrote their final words...) the peep in Blizzard need to get out more.

Ignore the Tracker Hound. He usually cannot find anything any more quickly than you can on your own.

Travel to 56, 86. Run along the mountain's edge and pick them up as you go. 20 takes about 8-10 mins.

The Felhound Tracker Kit has a duration of 10 min. If you have not opened it before 10 min, just abandon the quest and take it again.
The Fel Orb has a duration of 2h, it has 5 charges and the felhound will stay up for 30 min after you summon it.
The book can be thrown away.
You will keep the felhound and the orb for whatever time is left even after the quest is complete. This makes it possible to have the felhound still with you for a maximum of 2h and 40min after you have started the quest.
The fellhound disappears and will need to be re summoned if you die.
You can only use the orb and spawn the felhound in Azshara

The ancient cliff giants of the southern region of Azshara consume the rock and buildings of the land for sustenance. The excrement from their consumption is a highly malleable and extremely strong crystal known as Azsharite.

The formations litter the southern arc, but few are ever recovered due to the extremely violent nature of the giants.

You are to venture south and recover enough of the Azsharite for the creation of the weapon's body. My felhounds will aid in the recovery of the crystal.
