I just completed this quest , and when I checked my skills I saw that my riding skill had been increased from 75 to 150! So by doing the quest line you actually save about 800 g because of the very high training price.

Do you have to buy all of the summoning reagents yourself, or can I bring another Warlock that have done the quest to summon it and then kill it?

Doing this quest with a second warlock is very nice even if you don't need their Bell, Wheel, and Candle.

DM West is rather easy for Warlocks due to their banish spell. Having 2 'locks makes taking down the pylons very easy.

Having 2 'locks around for enslave demon during the Xorothian Dreadsteed event is sometimes the edge you need to succeed. Since the elite demons spawn at a certain rate during the event, it is possible to fall behind and then it becomes very diffictult to finish. With a second 'lock handy it's no trouble to have 2 elite demons controlled and fighting one (or two if you're really behind in dps) elite demon(s).

Plus two 'locks handing out healthstones and using soulstones makes for a fast rebound from a bad situation or wipe.

Make sure to bring plenty of shards with you if you are the one keeping the bell wheel and candle up, each time you use the black loadstone it consumes a shard. Whenever I have done this quest it has generally taken between 10 and 15 shards

Also having two warlocks in the party for this quest makes it so much easier. each can enslave a felguard and use it to fight off imps and other felguards. the extra AOE is a huge plus as well.Hang on to your mats after completing the quest because they can be reused to help another warlock complete the quest.

First priority should be keeping the bell, candle, and wheel up because if their auras are active the entire fight becomes quite easy due to the healing and damage reduction.

If you happen to bring 2 warlocks as others have said only one has to buy the summoning items. However, keep in mind that if the other warlock just buys the black lodestone they can help to keep the bell, candle, and wheel active. It isn't necessary but it can be helpful because when a warlock has any sort of aggro it will interrupt them from reactivating the items, not to mention sharing the shard costs is a big plus.

So how much does this whole chain of quests cost? I mean I have a 60 paladin and when I did my epic mount quest I spent roughly around 350g to 450g. I just want to know how much I'll need to save for my warlock when she gets to 60.

To complete this quest you will require certain components:

25 Dark Iron Ore : If you are a miner, or have a friend who is, you can get this in Blackrock Depths or Molten Core. It is also frequently up in the Auction House, however, as prices vary between servers, I will leave prices unlisted.

35 Black Dragonscale's : These are skinned from Dragons in Upper Blackrock Spire. If you know a skinner, time to suck up or use the Auction house. Again, as prices vary between servers, none are listed here.

10 Elixir's of Shadow Power : Made by an Alchemist, they require 3 Ghost Mushrooms to make. As most Alchemist take up Herbalism to match, you could try asking any fellow Alchemists you know, or check the Auction House.

6 Large Brilliant Shard's : These can only be obtained from disenchanting items, so you need to locate an Enchanter or try the Auction House. If you do know an enchanter, the Shards can be obtained from any blue item level 51 or over, so you could always help out by sending some their way.

3 Arcanite Bar's : Arcane Crystals are a rare find out of Rich Thorium Veins which you will need a miner for. Coupled with a thorium bar, an Alchemist can turn one into an Arcanite Bar. That transmute spell is on a 2 day cooldown, so expect to pay for that to.

The other items you will need come from Vendor's and you come across them as you do the quest. You can't buy from some of them until you complete actual quests (other than collect X items), so just make sure you have the 406 gold for the NPC items when you decide to start the quest.

Gorzeeki Wildeyes can be found at the Alter of Storms in Burning Steppes and will sell you :

Shadowy Potion for 6 gold.
J'eevee's Jar for 150 gold.
Black Lodestone for 50 gold.
Xorothian Glyphs for 50 gold.
Ur'dan is beside Lord Banehollow in the very back of the Shadow Hold and will sell you Xorothian Dust for 150 gold.

On the 4/23/2005, Fangtooth made the following post in the Warlocks section in regards to the components used and the ability to reuse them. (link has since expired ><)

The reagents required to open the portal are not consumed when you use them, that is correct. It was done this way so that Warlocks who have the reagents will be able to open the portal for themselves or others at a later time. The trade off for this is that any Warlock who does not have the reagents will not be able to create their own portals and they will be at the mercy of others.

You receive the quest at 60 from your local demon trainer in any of the major cities. (Ironforge, Stormwind, Ogrimmar or The Undercity)

Now that you have the quest it's time to start your journey to Altar of Storms in Burning Steppes. There is an Altar of Storms in the Blasted land, that is not the Altar of Storms you seek. Hopefully, by Level 60, you have been to Burning Steppes, if not, the Altar is in the far top right hand side (map). If you are entering this zone by way of Lake Shire/Red Ridge Mountains, simply follow the road.

There you will find two quest givers. A human named Mor’Zul Bloodbringer and a goblin named Gorzeeki Wildeyes. You will need to do all of these quests, and they can be done in either order, but we will follow the Mor’Zul Bloodbringer’s line of quests first.

The first thing that Mor’Zul Bloodbringer wants to you do it go get some “Raging” OwlBeast blood. This blood is used as the ink in the summoning parchment that you are creating. To find the OwlBeasts, you must travel to Winterspring. However, Unlike the quest text may seem to suggest, you can kill any type of owlbear in winterspring, they can all drop the blood.

Some Warlocks say the drop rate is around 20 - 25%, other's claim as high as 30 - 40%. If you play on a PvP server, be on guard as you will have both Horde and Alliance in the same area after the same items. You will find the highest concentrations of Owlbeasts at the blue-marked locations in this image. You can also find some wandering owls in the west of the zone, to the north and south of the road. They are all easily solo'd, but bringing a friend or two to help you will speed things up.

Once you have acquired 30 blood, you return Mor'Zul Bloodbringer. He apparently bottles up the blood recyclable containers and has you give them to goblin Gorzeeki Wildeyes. This goblin stands about five feet away from Mor'Zul Bloodbringer. When you turn in the owlbear blood, (and give it to the goblin, then speak to Mor'Zul again) you are also presented with three follow up quests :

1. Doomsday Candle : Collect 6 large brilliant shards and 25 dark iron ore.
2. Bell of Dethmoora : Collect 10 elixirs of shadow power.
3. Wheel of the Black March : Collect 35 black dragonscales.

This brings you to the quests that goblin Gorzeeki Wildeyes wants you to complete. Gorzeeki wants you to talk to Lord Banehollow in Fellwood. Lord Banehollow is found in the very back of the Shadow Hold. Getting to him is very easy thanks to the Shadowy Potions Gorzeeki Wildeyes sells. These potions make you friendly to the Jadenar inhabitants and lasts 20 minutes, more than enough time to get all the way back to this him. Note: This potion does not change your faction with the 5/6 slimes that you find in the Shadow Hold. You have to kill them or with some creative jumping and walking, you can bypass them.

After speaking to him, both he, the orc in the room with him, and the guards outside will forget about your shadowy potion effect and turn hostile.
Note: Only these four mobs turn hostile, the rest of the demons in Jaedenar remain friendly while you're under the effect of the potion.Ulathek is a level non-elite 58.

Upon returning, Lord Banehollow becomes a "marginally" happy camper as be begins to snack on Ulathek's heart. Lord Banehallow pushes you to speak to his servant named Ur'dan who is about five feet away from Banehallow, he will sell you Xorothian dust for the price of 150 gold each. Afterwards, you need to go back to Burning Steppes to Gorzeeki Wildeyes and hand it in.

Once the you hand in these items to Gorzeeki Wildeyes, along with the Brilliant Shards, Dark Iron Ore and other components, the little goblin tells you that you also need 3 Arcanite Bars ( Alchemy ) in order to fashion a Black Load Stone. Gorzeeki Wildeyes your Xorothian dust, he is thrilled at getting these items, however, he tells you that he lacks the needed facilities to infuse the dust onto paper.

For this, you are given the "Imp Delivery" quest. At this time, you are to travel deep into Scholomance to Ras Frostwhisper's laboratory. As of patch 1.8, you can no longer complete this step in a raid, you must enter as a 5 man group, see this thread for more information.

The lab is located in Ras Frostwhisper's room and as you enter his room, its immediately to your right. You can recognize it by the two large kettles hanging from the ceiling. The good news that you do not have the clear the entire room. There are 2 Risen Construct guards and 4 patrols that you have to pull. Once you kill them, you will need to pull the table which consists of a Specter Teacher and two acolytes. The imp just goes about his business and does not aggro the other NPCs. He jumpes around a little, and thats that. No enemies spawn, nothing dangerous happens.

After you complete the "Imp Delivery Quest," you once again return to the Altar in Burning Steppes where Mor'Zul Bloodbringer will give you a 7 page book to read. It details the steps that you need to take to summon the DreadSteed. This book also informs you that you have to purchase 3 additional items from Gorzeeki Wildeyes. These items are the J'eevee's Jar for 150 gold, Black Lodestone for 50 gold and Xorothian Glyphs for 50 gold. One of the items starts the quest, one of the items is used during the initial part of the Dire Maul event and one is used to summon the Dreadsteed.

Before you can initiate the event, you will have to do a regular clearing of the Dire Maul west wing. If, by some strange twist of fate your entire group hasn't done this before, heres a short walkthrough:

Dire Maul is located in Feralas, and you need to enter the instance through a door in the west of the Dire Maul area. To do that, you can obtain a Crescent Key by doing the imp event in the eastern instance, or use a rogue or seaforium charge to pass through the door in the west instance. You can also die on one side of the door, run back and resurrect on the other side, then open the door for the rest of the group using the torch.

Inside the instance, you will find Pylons surrounded by elementals. there are 5 pylons in total, and all elementals around them must die to open up Immol'Thar's prison at the end of the zone. One pylon is near the entry, cant miss it.

Two pylons are upstairs. Cast detect invisibility on your party, as theres some invisible undead roaming around these areas.

The last two pylons are downstairs. Past a big named tree, through a tunnel. As you clear the last pylon, the large blue shield around the big circular area in the center will fade, and you can enter it to fight Immol'Thar.

Once Immol'Thar is dead, you can initiate your quest event. Make sure everyone is ready for a hectic 10 minutes.

When you release the imp from the jar, he will place three artifacts around the circle.
The three artifacts provide you with powerful boosts. Every so often, one of them will fail. They make a sound and begin to float a little lower then they were before. It is critical that you run up to them and click the black lodestone the moment this happens. Using the lodestone costs a shard, so bring plenty. I used about 10 when doing this.

With all the artifacts in place, the event starts. Imps begin to spawn and charge your group. The most essential thing here is to keep checking the artifacts to see if any are powered down, its easy to miss it. The imps themselves are nothing to be worried about, the doomsday candle will deal enough damage to them to take them down for you.

After a few imp waves, a Dread Guard will spawn. They can be enslaved and banished. The imps keep on spawning, and the dreadlords slowly keep adding as well. If you can survive this for about 6 minutes, you will win. Even if your group dies toward the end of the event, the demons will go away after a while leaving you to resurrect and get ready to summon the Dreadsteed.

You can now summon the Dreadsteed. It's a typical bossfight, and not very hard. After a time of fighting it, its master spawns as well, a Dreadlord. He's not very hard, and you can carry on fighting the Dreadsteed, killing the master afterwards.

The dreadlord can drop some ok loot too, so the effort was not completely rewardless for the people helping you. Beside that, this event is actually one of the most fun events I've done in WoW so far, so they might actually enjoy it.

When the Dreadsteed is dead, you can talk to its spirit, and will receive what you've been working for, the summon Dreadsteed spell! Enjoy the speedy travels :).

I'm not 100%, but when I finished this our party didn't outlast the waves of demons. We wiped. There were mobs still left in the circle. In desperation, the priest and pally (both soulstoned) resurrected to fight but when they did so the mobs despawned. The ritual _either_ finishes on itself despite dying or we were so close we just wiped as it ended. We then continued the ritual and killed the dreadsteed and master.

My point? Don't give up if you wipe. If you've got a soulstone up (which you should) and you wipe, wait it out for a few minutes and then pop up.

I didn't find this to be as easy as many other comments made it out to be. You can't waltz through Dire Maul even post-expansion.

I've done that quest a lot of times now. I bought the mats, you need, if you want to be able to summon the steed and his master, and since that, other warlocks are asking me to summon the steed for them for a lower price ofcourse.

I wouldn't say this are an easy quest, but with the right people in your party it becomes a bit easier. I've been trying some combinations of people in the party and I would say that with a druid/priest, 2 warlocks (to enslave the eleite demons that spawns during the event), a mage (who can aoe the imps, to keep them of the warlock who's restarting the bell, wheel and candle) and a warrior, this quest are easy and a wipe should be able to avoid.

Since nobody has mentioned, I'll just say that the steed makes an awesome knockback, so try to stand with your back to a wall. If posible have one of the enslaved demons to tank the steed, since they can't be knockbacked.

For anyone thats done this or is very familiar with it...

Think its possible for either a 70 Mage (Frost) and 70 Warlock (Afflicition/Demonology), or, a 70 Priest (Holy or Shadow) and a 70 Warlock (same as before) to duo this event/quest.

My brother just hit 70 and I'm 70 with the Mage and almost 66 with the Priest, and while we dont mind getting the other 3 required components (either a healer or an AOEr, and a tank) for a good group, it'd be great if we didnt have to hassle with it.

Our gear is pretty much average (no raiding), the gear you get from questing to 70 in Outland. Couple of rare or epic crafted pieces, but not anything special.

For all warlocks who are going to start the dreadsteed chain: DON'T DO IT, it takes really long, you still have to pay far too much for all the quest items and finding party's for both the dungeons sucks too because nobody does it anymore because of outland dungeons,

buy an epic mount, it costs like 100g more, looks cooler and you get the money back in notime in outland.

I have one problem with this quest, Nobody on my server (Shandris) does these instances anymore, especially Dire Maul, Pretty much any of the original instances after The Sunken Temple might as well not exist on my server, everyone goes right to Outland by lvl 60, I don't have anyone let alone a group to do these quests with, Would it just be easier for me to save enough gold & buy an epic mount instead

I recently was added to a group after they defeated the dreadsteed and one warlock stayed behind in DM by him, it took me about 30 minutes to get to my party mate and I still got my epic mount, didn't even have be in party when dreadsteed was defeated

having played a level 60 paladin and my 62 warlock,i can say that the paladin (alliance) epic mount fight is way easier to do (the one in scholomance).

after TBC,getting parties for scholo or DM is next to impossible. i was lucky to have a 70 marksmanship hunter go with me when i was 61 to scholo.neither of us had the key so i suicided to open door,and we soloed our way to rattlegore without problems,althou i died when he was almost downed,used the soulstone ressurect and finished him off as he was beating down on the hunter.we took his key and went to the alchemy lab where i completed first phase.took about 1 hour.

went with a 70 demonology lock with good gear who had the lodestone,the scrolls and jeevee`s jar and a 52 priest and attempted the Dire Maul fight. the other lock was the only who could recharge the nodes,as i did not buy the lodestone and the other items...but he only had 10 soulshards left...

we wiped at about halfway thru the ritual,at the 5th rune....

Go To Dire Maul West. Get the key in Dire maul east.

Just finish this quest with my guild. We four maned it with a 60 priest, 63 mage, 60 lock, and a 53 warrior. the key is to have alot of soul shards. Keep the imps of the lock as he is repairing the the bell, candle and wheel. The fel guard are a pain because they start to gang up. If everyone dies, make sure the lock does no go into spirit form.

If you don't have a lot of friends or a decent guild on your server that are willing to help just save yourself some time and frustration and buy your epic mount training and either pvp for the epic mount or just buy it. What you save in frustration is much more than 100-200g difference you save by doing the quest. I really wish Blizzard would update these so that they become Ramparts/Blood Furnace quests so that people will actually run them.

I think I came out on top with this quest, and pretty lucky, I ran both scholo and DM (me a 62 lock) in the same day with a 66 lock and 61 pally. We 3 manned scholo with a few wipes and then added another lock when we went to DM. Overall I spent less than 200g on this mount, that's including buying the stardust. The 66 lock bought everything already and we completed the quest fairly easily. This was also on a low pop server and getting groups for scholo and DM can be fairly difficult.

To get this straight. The Wheel, Bell, and Candle are contained in Jeevee's Jar. When you use the jar an imp pops out that sets these items up, so YES, they do go into your inventory when you buy the jar.

dont do the quest, its faster to simply caveman a few bgs and i had got 100 simply from 60-61. so gold is not a problem.
but blizz is probably gonna make quest just like our 40s horsey.

What I would really like to know is if I need to do the mats quest(the one after the Xorothian dust, about collecting materials) to get the last part, since I know a warlock who has the other 3 items. Or do I have to do the both *branches* to get the last part about the actual summoning?

Heres a small tip if things go wrong and u have a rogue in the group. If ppl start to wipe, have the rogue vanish and stay in the circle (not sure if he has to stay in it, but alive at least), he'll be stealthed but the event will keep going and eventually the circle will be complete, after which ur soulstoned healer can rez himself and everyone else, or u can just release and run back (not sure if the latter works since my group had a priest).

All in all, if things go wrong, a rogue can vanish and the event will finish itself.

This quest isn't as bad as people say it is. It is hella long that's for sure, but the dreadsteed is awesome! I just got it about a week ago and spending all the money for it is definayley worth it. It costs about 550g anyway to get the training and even though I had to buy the mats myself i only spend about 400g. So i did save some. Some can finish this quest really fast, but if u spam for the mats like the dragon scales, etc. u can complete this quest in just a few hours. The worst part is really Scholo and Dire. They take the longest. But otherwise I really enjoyed this quest. Yes...it's extremily long, but it gets kinda fun after awhile, until ur !@#$ed off that it's taking so long and u just want ur mount. Anyway I have my mount now and it was sure worth all those long hours. For sure try to get some friends to help b/c that saves a bit of time. HAVE FUN!

For people talking about scholomance: This is the quest AFTER completing the scholomance section and many if not most people come here for tips/help for the DIRE MAUL part.

To do this quest, you have to kill the elementals surrounding each of the five pylons. Why? Because there's a forcefield around the area where you'll have to summon the dreadstead. To remove the forcefield, you have to power down the five pylons in the instance. All of the elementals around the pylon have to die in order for the pylon to power down. When the last one dies, you heard a shattering sound and you'll see the pylon 'explode' and it won't glow bright bluish-white anymore. (It'll be an ugly white afterwards). The elementals surrounding the pylons are immune to arcane magic. They also hit rather hard so it's best if you don't take all of them down at a time. It's possible to pull 1-2 from the pylon without aggroing the others. They're also CC-able.

When you go into the instance, you'll see a pylon right away. Be careful to not aggro the trees on both sides of the pylon, and watch out for the walking giant trees (But if you're going to kill the big tree boss, Tendris Warpwood, you should just kill the giant trees walking around. Tendris Warpwood will call them all to defend him if you engage in a fight with him.)

Then, walk upstairs to where the undead are (the place is relatively small, I'll assume you can see the upstairs are from the first pylon). There, they'll be two pylons, one on the left side, one on the right. Either way you go (it's like a rectangle shape, the middle is a hole you cannot 'float' over and the pylons are marked here with a ~. Illyanna Ravenoak (boss) and her bear are walking around one side of the rectangle (the side away from the entrance) so you migth want to kill that side), you'll have to kill a mob of non-elite skeletons. Be careful! Once these skeletons are dead, they'll spawn five non-elite worms to attack whoever had the killing blow on the original skeleton. They have very little health, but should be taken down a.s.a.p. as five worms hitting one person for ~50hp per hit will kill anyone pretty quickly.
Also, don't split up! There are invisible monsters that appear once in a while and if your healer (or someone) gets ahead of the rest of the party, they'll probably die if no one's there to defend them.

Ok! After getting those two upstairs, go back down to where Tendris Warpwood is. He's a giant tree down the stairs of the first (entrace) level. You can't miss him. If you cant find him... (I don't know what to say..) At lvl 60, I was able to walk down the stairs, hugging the right side, and was able to get to the door to his right (You need the Crescant key to unlock it) without aggroing the boss.
So! open the door, and go through (watch out! There's two invisible.. uh.. thingys here). You should find yourself in a circular room with what looks like wind elementals and mana elementals. There's also Immol'thar and some person (hm.. I wonder who that person is..;D) inside a forcefield.
There's a pylons on both sides of the room. Power those down. :]ou should only have to kill a few wind elementals to get to them.

After that's done, Immol'thar is right there with no force field! You'll see more elementals walking around in a circle around the boss area. You might want to kill them to avoid dragging them into the boss fight, but it's not required.

Kill Immol'thar and there you'll have the circle all to yourself! Well, not for long anyway.
The imp is called and he sets up the bell, candle, and wheel around the circle. Now, imps and felguards come and attack the three items. (They have a buff that does ~200-300 to one of the item). The imps are nonelites, but the felguards are elites. As time moves on, more and more people will come.

The warlock must keep the three items up. To do that, they can have their party take on the adds while they themselves use soul shards to keep the items up.

After a few minutes (I think it was between 6-9..) the adds will go away, and the dreadstead can be summoned.
Kill the dreadsteed, loot the corspe, talk to the spirit and quest complete!
Uh.. uh oh! When the horse dies, his master comes and attacks the party! D: You don't have to kill him to complete the quest.

I went in (as a 70 hunter) with a 60 lock and we managed to finish this quest.
the lock both died 4-5 minutes into the summoning part and I walked out and feigned death because my pet died and there were 4 fel guards and around 20 imps in the circle. I sat on the stairs, rezed and feed my pet, healed up, and within a minute (or two), everything despawned. The lock used her soulstone and summoned the horse. mm.. I was surprised... and very happy we didn't have to do the whole thing again.

I know some people don't like to hear the "Oh I'm so cool, I solo'd this quest" kinds of comments, but I'm relaying this information specifically because newly 60 locks tend to have a hard time getting a full group together to run DM West these days, and this info may help a little.

Tonight I duo'd this quest as a new L60 Warlock in some basic Outlands gear with a single L70 Hunter (in quest/AH blues & greens only) as a partner. We prepped for the imp/doomguard event by making some basic plans ahead of time. The Hunter had a pet with screech (owl) for AOE threat, and used traps liberally for kiting and cc'ing the elites. When it started getting crazy, I sac'd my VW and enslaved one of the doomguards to help the hunter, and when it got crazier still, I banished yet another doomguard and kept him on ice. I stood at the center of the circle at all times unless I had to repair a ritual component, so the hunter could see when I was getting pounded with imps and needed to pull them off me as I ran for a failing component.

In the end, it was crazy mad fun, and we got it right the first time with all the ritual items upright and no deaths, though there were definitely some close moments -- mere ticks of a bandage made the difference a couple times. The two bosses that came after were anticlimactic; when the Hunter and their pet got punted by the demon, my VW tanked both him and the Dreadsteed without breaking a sweat until they came back, so don't sweat the bosses.

So if you're having a tough time getting a full group, just find a friendly, competent L70 with average or better gear, plan ahead and you should have your new ride in no time.

After completing the event, summoning the dreadsteed and defeating it, The dreadsteed bugged out and didn't appear in my spellbook.
I opened a ticket that night and 4 hour 31 minute's later I had to log out, the next day I reopened the ticket and 9 hours 8 minute's later I had to log out, the next day 7 hours 44 minute's and all this time a GM never bothered to respond to my ticket, so schilling out a couple hundred to a lawyer who then contacted blizzard, A parasite GM contacted me the second I logged on and manually gave me my epic dreadsteed, never bothering to explain why the quest bugged out in the first place.
If anyone knows the reason for the bugged out epic dreadsteed please let the rest of us know.

Yay! i just done this q. the dreadsteed is awesome. if you dont want to pay 250 for the last things you can pay just like 50 g* to another warlock who got the mats (if you can a lvl 70 warlock) i did it and i saved a lot from it.

* you can pay less or more depending on what the warlock with mats want

When i did this with my group we wiped 9 times but it is so worth it. when you do the summoning, it is much easier than it looks. the wheel will heal the warlocks and restore the warlocks mana, the candle will hurt your enemies and the bell will reduce your damage done by the demons. it will only take 6 min until you can summon the dreadsteed. besides the imps are very easy to kill but the felguards is harder but much easier if you enslave one and then use it against other felguards. it does a lot of dps on them and they will still be elite. Your felguard will ofc get a little health but dont worry about that when it dies you can enslave a new one. and when you are done with the waves ask your helping warlock to summon the dreadsted or if you got the mats use the glyphs you got and pull the dreadsteed from xoroth. and the start fighting it. after a while a dreadlord will appear and is raving mad at stealing his dreadsteed. continue to kill the dreadsteed and when it is dead quickly complete the q. you are done with the thingy that you shall do and your riding skill has increased to 150 and you got high repair bills!

The price of items also depends on the server you are on...
on Sisters of Elune the proce of the large brilliant shards was anywhere form 2g to 10g more than the suggested buyout here on Wowhead, I did a lot of negotiating to pay about 14g per shard, plus the dust and the potions it was still pricey but not as high as if I bought my epic outright...

Man.

My girlfriend's 61 Warlock needed this... she'd spent all the money and everything. Cleared part of the dungeon with myself, a 60 Rogue, and her friend, a 70 Shaman. Tough. As. Balls.

We all wiped at one point, probably 5 minutes into the ritual. But the shammie res'd, brought us both back and it was done... beat the horse and master no problem.

actually~ if you just buy your own racial mount from and learn your riding skills from your own racial city, you gonna only spend 480 gold(learning fees)+80 gold(horse fees) = 560 gold( if you are exalted with your own city). however, if you buy the mats from ah, you gonna spend about 125-150g, and another 150g for Xorothian Stardust~ if you dont have a lock friend who has alrdy done his epic mount quest, fine~ you gonna spend another 250g~ total is 125+150+250=525(depends on your server's level of price). finally, you only save 10g, but you waste a lot of time and you gonna feel sick after you finish the quest.

Just did event with 60 Affliction warlock and 70 mage (0/0/61). As a mage I had to kite mobs while warlock renewed reagents. We died but circle persisted, and horse was a joke. So event is almost soloable.

HINT to save you the 200g for this part of the quest chain, If you go to DM-W in a group with another Lock who already has the items the instructions say you need you do not need them. You will be able to get your dreadstead with the other Lock's stuff. AKA you only need to do it once. I learned this the hard way. Lost 200g since i cant sell the stuff back. if this happens to you i suggest that you find another lock that is on his way to get his dreadstead and run him through to use your items.

Not quite. It is a black horse, the same as the lvl 40, with a firey mane and awesome spikes/horns coming out of its head. One of the sickest mounts in the game.

So, if I find a warlock that is going to do the summoning, I can join in on the fun. But it is still unclear to me what parts I can skip and what cannot skip.

These are the quests I can see I need:

Party got wiped on Immothar in the circle 4 times in a row, it started getting late so our healer and pally dropped out. We replaced them with a druid and rogue and did it first try. Convincing me further that Pallys are over rated (I guess all classes have a use though). Anyway I suggest a Healer, 2 warlocks, rogue and a tank. The extra DPS of the rogue will help drop Immothar way faster.

During the ritual the 2nd Warlock will come in handy. Have 1 warlock aoe rain of fire on imps, while the other dosen't aggro any mobs and takes care of the elements to keep the ritual going. Both Warlocks enslave incoming dread guards and use them on the other incoming dread guards.
Survive long enough and you're done.
The dreadsteed and doomguard are easy.

Everyone in the party said this was the funnest quest they had ever done!

Alright, after defeating Immol'thar (be aware to kill his eyes quickly!), our group - warrior, hunter, priest, paladin, warlock (me) - buffed up and I released the imp from his jar. After releasing the Imp he will start placing the bell, wheel and candle in the circle. After placing those 3 items he will disappear. As soon as the Imp leaves, Imps spawn at the edge of the summoning circle. These don't hit for more than 1 if the artifacts are all working.
When an artifact goes down, it makes a loud noise and floats lower, and it can be easily identified by mousing over it (if it's broken it will have the wheel instead of the mouse pointer). Fixing it costs a soul shard, so bring plenty. I used around 10 for repairing the artifacts, and 3 more for enslaving a demon, a healthstone for the warrior and a soulstone for the pala.
After a while, dread guards will spawn after each other (4 to be precise). It's wise to enslave the first one so he can attack the next dread guard that spawns. (If there are 2 warlocks in the group, you each enslave one and let the enslaved one kill the other spawns). If another one adds while the other hasn't died yet, you should banish it, since these are strong (level 60 elites).
Once all four dread guards have spawned, the ritual will soon be over. You can check this by looking at the pink symbols at the floor - 9 have to be lit to create enough energy for the summoning circle.
You will directly notice when the ritual is complete as around the circle is a strong energy wall with lots of purple and pinky bubbles rising from it. All demons will be banished back to xoroth almost immediately. Now it's time to rest up, drink, buff, eat and so on.
After you have had enough rest and everyone is ready, you can use the xorothian glyphs to pull the dreadsteed into the circle. It's a level 62 elite horse, but it isn't very hard. It has a nice kickback and does some decent damage, but nothing to worry about, much easier than Immol'thar himself and his eyes. After a while of fighting the steed (the steed will be around 70%-50% of its health), it's master, Lord Hel'nurath (I think), will spawn. Continue killing the steed with preferably your tank, tanking the lord. Once the steed is down, talk to it to finish your quest in case your party goes down. The Lord drops some decent loot too, so the effort wasn't completely worthless for the others helping. And to be honest, this quest is one of the most exciting I ever did, and most fun to do. My party members also said this was really, really fun ;)

And after this event, enjoy your mount!

The only part you can skip is the part where you buy the last three items from the goblin in the Burning Steppes.
You HAVE to do the other ones. I am lucky enough to have a warlock friend who has the items needed for the summon (Black lodestone, J'eevee's Jar, Xorothian Glyphs), so I didn't have to buy them (they cost a total of 250g).
I went in there with 4 mates, one priest, one rogue, one warrior, and one warlock.
The warlock lets J'eevee out of his jar and then the event starts. It's definitely one of the most fun quests EVER.

My wife's warlock was stuck trying to find a 5-man scholo group, so I thought of a kind of work around.

All you need to do is find a 5-man group currently in Scholo. Message them and ask if, when they are done and someone leaves, they could invite you. Then you can just zone in to the already cleared instance and run right up to the alchemy lab.

The only difficulty is that two patrols respawn (necrofiends), but they're both easily avoidable. Also, I'm not sure if they invite you then all disband if you will be removed from the instance or not.

Anyway, this saved us quite a few hours of work and repair bills, so I thought I'd share it.

The post two posts above me is incorrect. The summoning mats still work, so if you find a warlock that has the mats already you dont have to buy the final three items, just turn in all the items and get to the summon dreadsteed quest.

I recently got my warlock to lvl 60. I was very anxious to get my dreadsteed so I did the following and got it within less than a day of when I picked up the first quest!

See your lock trainer and he sends you to talk to Bloodbringer in Burning Steppes. (Note: Thottbot has quest under lvl 58 but you cannot begin until 60.) When you get to him, pick up quest "Rage of Blood" and then save yourself some travel time and pick up "Lord Banehollow" from the goblin behind him. Purchase your shadowy potions and keep em handy. The longest part of this quest for me was the blood, but it can be done in about an hour or so. Do whichever first according to preference, I preferred getting the most annoying part done first.

Go to Winterspring and hit Owl Wing Thicket for the Rage of Blood quest items. I teamed up with a very nice warrior who was only looking for regularly dropped items by saying I would only loot my quest items. Went much faster. After getting 30 bloods, hit Felwood. Once at the entrance to Jaedenar, pop your shadowy potion (you have 3 so don't worry about losing the buff). This way you won't have to fight your way to the tunnel. It's a long run to get to Banehollow you should have about 15 mins left on your buff when you get to him. Pick up your quest and backtrack (not very far) to Ulathek. If you wish, pop a new potion and then speak to him. He will (along with his guards) aggro. I easily soloed this (60 affliction warlock w/void out). Kill him first and then pick off his guards easily. Head back to Banehollow and turn in, then the NPC to his right will sell you your Stardust. Hearth!

Grab 10 Elixir of Shadow Power, 3 Arcanite Bars, 35 Black Dragonscale, and 6 Large Brilliant Shards + 25 DI Ore. Keep em in your bags and head back to the NPC in Burning Steppes. Turn in your Stardust to get the Imp Delivery quest. Turn in all your mats for the quests "Bell of
Dethmoora", "Wheel of the Black March", "Doomsday Candle", and "Arcanite". Head to Scholomance. Go in general chat and note that you only need to get to the alchemy lab (tip if need be) to a group who has cleared and is leaving to get into their instance. All you need to do is set your imp loose in the lab in Frostwhisper's room and poof, complete! Head back to return the imp to NPC in Burning Steppes.

Now, you're ready to go to DM West and summon! All you need to do is purchase the Lodestone, Jar, and Glyphs from the goblin. IF you know a warlock with mats already, no need to do this but you MUST pick up the quest "Dreadsteed of Xoroth" to complete it. I completed this yesterday with a warlock who had a Lodestone, so I only needed to buy the Glyphs and Jar. It does work, but note that the warlock with the Lodestone MUST be the one to repair the ritual items. Make sure they have plenty of soulshards before the ritual.

For me, the ritual was easier than I thought. Don't PUG this if you do not have to. We had 2 locks, 1 pally, 1 warrior, and a druid. It will go much smoother with 2 locks. The first phase I bearly fought anything, we banished and enslaved and let other mobs kill our demons for us. The ritual completes and the dreadsteed will come through when you use your Glyphs. Easy fight, he will kick people out of the circle, but he went down pretty easily.

Sure, it took them a while to understand that they should stay inside the circle and didn't have to go anywhere after the demon boss, but it worked fine. Had to run around a bit to repair those 3 thingamajiggs, if the imps/demons hit you you'll be interrupted. Soon enough, we wiped because they became too many :D
We waited a bit, the circle wasn't finished and the wheel and candle were broken down. The circle still finished after a minute though, so how serious do you have to be about repairing them? anyway, after the circle was finished the demons were still there. I thought they would vanish, but also had in mind that they maybe would vanish if the priest used the soulstone that I put on her earlier. And yes, they vanished when the priest ressed. She didn't have much time and thought we were done and was about to leave, but I said that this is an easy boss, (thank you, RoaE). However, we killed the horse with ease, when Lord CHCJxxjgvwh came I told the tank to tank him and the rest of us finish the horse off. Talked to the horse - Got my mount! YEAH! - and then the demonlord died easily as well. love

Note: Important information about the death guards in DM west, they are more than 4... read on!

Materials:
1) 35 black dragon scales from Burning steppes near Morgan's vigil (you dont need UBRS or BWL)
2) 25 dark Iron ore From BRD and Searing Gorge
3) 10 elixirs of shadow power (needs 3 ghost mushrooms and crystal vial), ghost mushrooms from Skulk rock in hinterlands and Jintha Alor, also in hinterlands. (in the 2 caves, one cave leading to sharp beak and the other which has the ancient egg of Hakkar)and also Dire Maul east.
4) 3 arcanite bar. Arcane crystals from small and rich thorium veins near winterspring (near the demon area to the south, not inside the demon area...but just outside in the snow covered fields). I could never get arcane crystals at EPL, even though there are soooo many rich thorium veins there.

After the mats, speak to Morg'zul in the altar of storms, he will give you a quest to speak to Lord Banehollow, you can take your guild group (which I did), and we 5 manned jaednar like a typhoon. Spoke to Banehollow, got the quest, killed Utholok, then got to buy the xorotian dust from banehollow's servant. I had to use only one shadow potion which I got from the goblin at the altar of storms. A epic bow dropped on our way in Jaednar from a felhound, our guild rogue got it!

Then we hit Scholomance, 5 manned it to ras frostwhisper, then let the imp out. Got the stuff, then back to Altar of storms.

Next day, morning we started diremaul west. We started at around 10.00am. We finished Immol'thar with ease... then it was time to wipe.

Well first time, the group was a priest, warrior, hunter and 2 locks (me and friend). The other lock, who also had the lodestone, glyph and jeeves jar, and priest had mixture of green and blue gear. I was trying to save some money. But the lock was not really working to keep the wheel, bell and candle up, anyway... the first and 2nd wave of imps came, we barely managed to kill them. I am destruction specced, and I have PVP set gear (the best), but I could not enslave the death guard for more than 1-2 seconds. The other lock, even though demonology specc, couldnt do it either. We wiped 4 times before they quit.

I waited, spent 250g on the mats, got another group, made sure they had better gear, warrior, me (lock), priest, mage, pally.

This time, i aoed with shadow fury (which rocks) and rain of fire from time to time, and also threw in a few shadow bolts. But My main task was to make sure I kept the bell, whistle and wheel ignited whenever they went off. But the flow of demons was endless.

The imps die, but the deathguards in the beginning came in 1's, then 2's finally 4's. We killed till our mana potions ran out, then we wiped. We had killed atleast 3-4 death guards (lvl 60 elites), but there were still 4 more left on the circle.

We came back, wiped....again and again. After 3-4 times they quit, I stayed back, got another group. Me (lock), druid, pally, mage, warrior.

We wiped a few times getting to the summoning chamber because of the ghosts, and I was tired and wanted to rush things --- so go slow. The tunnel leading from tendris to immol'thar is full of ghosts and they kinda sneak up on you.

Finally, we arrived, there were 4 elite 60 death guards with imps waiting in the summoning area. We managed to kill those (surprisingly, we managed to pull only 3 of the 4 death guards and thats why it worked). Then we ate and drank, buffed up, then I set the imp loose one more time.

This time, we decided not to attack the imps too much. Priority were the death guards. If they gather up, even with imps dead, your group will wipe. The mage decided to conserve his mana for the death guard. The pally would heal from time to time, the druid would tank in bear form, and the warrior would tank, and I would keep the items (wheel, candle and bell) ignited and throw in a AOE or dps when I could. I also had my VW on defensive.... but main reason was to sacrifice it for the shield.

we started, and the insane number of demons started coming in. We killed when the death guards came in 1's, then killed more when they came in 2's. But when they came in 4's, I could banish one, but that didnt do us much good. We must have killed 5-6 before the group of 4 deathguards came in all at once... that was when we wiped. BUT we did not release spirit. I had noticed that the ritual continues after you wipe,.... for a few seconds atleast. And this time around, we had fought long enough for all but one rune to light up around the circle of summoning. So we waited with bated breath and did not release spirit. Guess what? The ritual completed on its own while we were dead. Then the whole circle started glowing. Now the 4 death guards and a lot of imps were still there inside the circle.

I told my 4 friends to release, but I stayed behind dead, they came back from the entrance the normal way. Then when they aggroed the demons....the demons vanished ... the message came, the deathguard has been pulled back in to Xoroth. So only when the circle is glowing (with pink bubbly things coming out) and when you aggro them, the demons get eliminated. I was still dead inside the circle. Our pally rezzed me, and then I summoned the dreadsteed, when it was 50% down, the demon lord came in. The warrior tanked the demon, we dps'ed the horse. The horse died, talked to it's spirit and the quest was done. Then we killed the demon lord (3 guys - pally, me and warrior, druid and mage had died by then).
And done!

So things to remember,
1) The number of demons that come in is HUGE. Not just 4.
2) if you die and release before substantial part of the ritual is done, it WILL reset. People said before the patch, it would not reset, and the imps would vanish, but now it works as supposed to, the glitch has been eliminated.
3) When you complete a substantial period of time inside the circle fighting, but have died, all 5 party members DO NOT release your spirits until you see the circle glowing. That means the ritual is complete. Then all but lock can release. Then come in and make sure the guy resurrecting the lock is inside the circle. I dont think its a good idea for the lock to be outside the circle at any time.
4) When the circle is glowing and the bubbles come out, when the demons aggro, they vanish
5) kill horse first, speak to it, let tank take care of the demon lord.

The horse is worth it by the way.... nothing beats it.

I just tried to complete this quest with a warlock guildie. We read everything we could about it on thottbot and in the dungeon guide, so we thought we were ready. Well, it would have been really nice to know some VERY important details about this instance and quest BEFORE doing it!

1. When you assemble your group, make sure someone has the Crescent Key to get in the West side instance.

2. Before you even think about clearing the summoning circle and beginning that process, you MUST clear the voidwalker-type demons from around 5 different mana pylons throughout the instance. There are groups of about 7 of these mobs around each one, and these mobs must be cleared to deactivate each pylon. Each pylon must be deactivated in order to lower the shield around the final boss that is sitting inside your soon to be summoning circle for the quest!

3. Before attempting to kill Tendris Warpwood (the big tree boss in the second room of the instance down the ramp) be sure to kill ALL of the big pats that look like him from the first room. If you don't, you will pull all 6 of them plus the boss!

Ran through this with 1 lvl 70 Balance Druid, a lvl 65 Shadow Priest and me, lvl 66 Demon Lock.

I managed to keep all the 3 items up in the air, however we wiped as we were overloaded with Imps and those lovely lvl 61 elite Felgaurds.

We hesitated to go back in, however we went in to try again, and what do you know the ritual was completed! All I had to do was to summon the Demonsteed and kill it, which was easy, then came that lovely other boss right before we killed off the steed, once again easy! Got my mount!

But just to be clear, since patch 2.1.1

You must clear 5 pylons to get to the final boss. Took us maybe 2 hrs the most to get to the final boss as we just had 2 of us for the first while.

Kill the first group at begining of instance, make sure to clear the pats that walk around first. Then go to the rounded area, take the right hand side of the wall, go up and defeat the 2 pylons up there. Be carefull of that Hunter Boss with the Bear. She see's you from a mile!

Then, go back down in the middle part, defeat the boss, open door and proceed to the main chamber, where there are 2 more pylons, left and right. Just defeat the 1 Elite Air elemental guy with his lackies. No need to kill the gaurds that circle the final boss. Once the pylons are set free, the gaurds will slow down, so you can walk through easy enough.

Oh, assuming you have the key to get into the western side of the instance. : )

I'll I can say is that for ground mounts, this one is the best! My lvl 70 Pally is now my 2nd main. lol

I just hit 60 last night & am having a friend summon for me today, bought all the mats & did the quests last night.

Alright!

If your like me then it could get pretty confusing with all of the comments given above. Most of them not all that up to date or plainly contradicting each other, So I thought I made it easy for those like me and write a little about my own experience with this q.

First things first: 16-09-2007

It's the date of this being written. If your reading this three monts after this date then there will be a big chance that it's out of date, so don't take everything written here as literally or accurate.

First you'll have to go to Ogrimmar/UC/Stormwind/Ironforge. Just talk to the pet trainer next to the main warlock trainer in either of those cities. They will all send you to a guy in burning steppes.

Second you'll get two quests from the two guys at burning steppes, both are at the exact same spot. These are the two who will give you all the quests and follow up quests for your dreadsteed.

General map position: Upper left corner on the map near the alter of storms, which really is exactly at the northwest corner of the map. Just follow the road and you'll get there eventually.

As said before you'll get two quests. One will give you a q to collect owlbeast blood in Winterspring, the other will take you to felwood into the Jadenaer area. Pretty straight foreward and nicely explained, so both should be easy to do. The Jadenaer q will cost you 2G for a disguising potion. This potion can be bought from the guy that gave the q. Furthermore the item to complete the Jadenaer q (stardust) will have to be bought for an aditional 150G, there is no escaping this! You will have to pay 150G to the man.

Before you get back to the burning steppes to complete the q's make sure to have the following items:

1 Arcanite Bar
2 Elixer of Shadow Power (not greater shadow power)
3 Black Dragonscale
6 Giant Brilliant Shard
25 Black Iron Bar

Each of those will have to be given to the same two guys in burning steppes. Don't worry you can take the next q without these items, but you will have to gather all those items eventually to gain your Dreadsteed so at least keep it in mind.

All of the above items can be bought at the AH, most of the time at least. If they aren't present at the time you look then try weekends when more people are active and thus more items are available on the AH. If you still can't get the items you want try asking any friends/guildmates or try spamming trade chat at the major cities. Unfortunately all of those items are going to cost you quite a bit. I got them all for about 80G, but I have heard about people paying as low as 40G and as much as 120G. Just keep in mind that it's going to cost you.

The second to last q is in Scholomance (Western Plaguelands) and you'll be given an imp in the bottle to be opened in the lab there. No matter what this is going to suck. I would highly recomment doing this in weekends when more people are active, because quite plainly Scholo isn't done anymore. The drops suck and the dungeon is too hard for the meager reward. For those that have atlas (atlas is pretty cheap add-on that gives you maps of the dungeons/can be found on almost all of the WoW add-on sites) just follow the map. Those that don't have it will have it a bit harder, unless you have a rogue in the party with 300 lockpicking skills.

With a rogue all you have to do is enter and you'll get on a bridge almost at once, kill the mobs on the bridge and look of the edge. You see a locked door underneat you with a mob guarding it. Jump down on that mob and kill it, they aren't humanoid and shouldn't run so it could be done without gaining agro from anything else. Make the rogue open the door and enter the room. Mobs here will be neutral unless you click on them, so DON'T click them because you will be killed.

20+ elites on your ass ISN'T fun.

Just walk to the door on the other side of the room and open it. To your right side you'll see a mob around all kinds of chemistry equipement. Kill that mob and open the jar with the imp at the chemistry equipement. It'll walk around a bit until it gives the quest complete message. IF you DIE while the imp is out of the bottle make sure to stay at your body. The imp will continue on its way after your death and it will still complete the q for you.

If you don't do this q with a rogue then you will simply have to get the key of off one of the bosses in the dungeon. Just follow the main rode and you'll eventually get to the right boss with the key. From there it's pretty much the same.

Once done go back to the burning steppes and complete the q, remember to bring all of the above items if you haven't already done so.

You have to complete ALL the q's given by the two guys in the Burning steppes before you can complete the final q and gain your mount.

The last q requires the now completed parchment (the one you made following the q), the item you paid 150G for and three other items you buy from one of the q-givers at the burning steppes. These last three items cost a total of 250G.

The last three items (with a value of 250G) aren't necessary to complete the q, ONLY if someone else in the party has those three items.

This q takes place in Dire Maul in Feralis, Dire Maul West to be precise. Just like scholomance this dungeon just isn't done anymore, so finding a party will once again be pretty hard. You have to have all items to eventually summon a dreadsteed and defeat it. All that is required is to kill the dreadsteed, so you don't have to actually kill the master of the dreadsteed that will eventually be summoned after the dreadsteed itself is dead. Talk to the spirit that appears when the dreadsteed died to complete the q and gain the ability to summon the mount.

Finally I'll just give a few tips to gain parites to either of the two dungeons.

Tip 1:
Finding a party to scholomance is a problem all lvl60+ warlocks face. So try to gain a party with four warlocks and a healer, you could trying to do it with five warlocks but that will make you dependent on having a team good enough not to die. It could be possible but it isn't plausible. To search for the warlocks for your party simply whisper any lvl60+ warlock in the area of scholomance/UC/burning steppes and other high lvl areas. Most will turn you down but you'll find an aditional three in no time. High lvl warlocks that have already completed the q might help you simply out of pity and sympaty, having had to do it themselves.

The best outcome would be finding three aditional warlocks that have complete the gathering part of the q as well, so you can directly follow up to Dire Maul West (or Dire Maul East and then West if no one has the Dire Maul key)

A healer can be a little trickier to get. You might be lucky with the usual LFG system or the chat, otherwise try to whisper any healer available and near Scholomance or talk a guildmember or friend into helping you.

Tip 2:
Some of the high lvl warlocks will help you with the last q in Dire Maul for a small fee. Usually those warlocks have the last three needed items (saving you 250G) and have the key to Dire Maul West as well, plus they will make it easier to go through the dungeon. With luck they might even know a healer friend to help them.

Did this as a 62 protection paladin(me) and a 62 demo lock. Couldn't kill the lord whatever his name is but we dropped the steed, got the mount and left.

I completed this quest yesterday with minimal frustrations. Yes, yes all these posts are good and all, but let me share the ONE thing that caused us to wipe during the ritual, and a tip to completing it with no issues.

yeah i know you just kiilled him. but for us his large mangled body was left on the dias during the ritual. It covered the candle, and blocked most of the view for the rest of us. Even if we could see the candle, we couldn't click on it to repair. Needless to say without its firey blast, the imps quickly overwhelmed us and each member of the group causing a touch of turrets syndrome.

So.... with that said here are a few tips i can share with you.

Take Care of Immol'thar's Body,

1-skin him, if i remember the rule right a skinner with 310 skill should be able to handle this.

2-tank him off the dias. I don't know how far he can go before he evades, but if you can try to kill him off the dias, that way his body will be out of the way during the ritual

3-wait, this is what we had to do, we had no skinner and he was already dead right in the way of everybody. I know what you are thinking, WAIT! that will take forever... hardly, its like 5-10 minutes i don't know what the actual time is, cause i was productive while i waited. I went around the instance gathering Soul Shards, and creating health stones for the group. ( i like to hand out rank 4 and rank 5 stones so everybody gets 2) By the time we took down a few bosses, DEd the drops, rolled for shards, and gathered a full bag of SoulShards and healthstones, his body was gone and out of the way.

Here is the other tip i noticed - and i am aware that it has already been mentioned, but it deserves repeating.

if you are the loc in the group, (im assuming you are cause you are reading this) DON'T DMG ANYTHING! i can't stress this enough, you need ZERO agro, the imps are retarded little buggers and will attack everything they can. Your time is MUCH better spent using the stone on the candle, wheel, and bell. -- Here is what we did. healer stood by the bell and faced where he can see the wheel, (healers don't usualy move), and the mage stood by the candle where he can see the rest of the group, when one went down, they let me know, (candle down, Wheel down, etc.) While i used the lodestone on the particular item, the mage, AOEd that spot to remove all threat from teh area.

I guess using the stone on the item creates a minimal ammount of threat, so if an AOE spell is applied there it instantly pulled all the imps, and whatever else off me to repair the item. then its off to the next one. (don't forget to keep your pet on passive, or just be smart and use imp)

We did this the second time. No Problems, no issues, and no deaths. So there ya go, and happy questing, most fun ive ever had in the game, and my loc is my 3rd class ive lvled to outland, i guess its all downhill from here :(

But im really really fast now, and saved hundreds by not buying a reg mount and training!

Very worth doing if you can get a group for the end.

Do all the prequests and make sure you have the key to Diremaul west or someone who can open the doors. Make sure you have the mats for the final quest "Dreadsteed of Xoroth" or another warlock who kept them and is willing to help.

Now how to finish....

It's truely not that difficult. Enter Dire Maul West. In the first courtyard is the first pylon (light spire going straight up from it). Kill the mobs around it to deactivate it (light will turn off).

Forward from this is the next section. You will see Tendris Warpwood down some stairs....u dont need to go there; but feel free; he does have a drop. Go either to the left or right of this, the take the first turn, then turn one last time through the next doorway....there are mobs here to kill.

Upstairs are two more pylons here, one on each side. Kill mobs around these to deactive these.

Back out to the "Tendris" area. There is a closed door; go through it. This takes you to the circle area. The last 2 pylons are to the left and right in here....kill the mobs to deactivate these. Don't worry about that other spawns of the same kind of mob....they keep regenerating and do not stop coming....just kill enough to turn the light off.

This turns off the shield to Immol'thar, kill him next. Get rested up for the next step:

Let the imp out of his jar. The warlock must use the black lodestone to keep the wheel, candle, and bell up...they will done down one at a time (this is critical to do). Have someone who is responsible for getting aggro off the warlock....the warlock should not fight in the battle to avoid aggro at all costs. Any attack on the warlock will keep them from keeping the candle, wheel, and bell up.

Once the waves of attack are done, breathe, rest up and then the warlock summons the dreedstead. When you have it down near death his owner will come; the warlock while the others are fighting may (tho he can assist in the fight too) talk to the steed to complete the quest.....it is done at that point. Either finish up the last boss or take the loot dropped and congrats on finishing it.

It will take a group anywhere from 1hr to 2 hrs to complete. If you choose not to clear all the other random mobs it takes less time.

Here's a pretty much complete walk through of everything I had to do for this quest, with updated costs (as of June 2008 on the Nazgrel server). Sorry about how long it is, but this is all the quests you need to do from start to finish. Hopefully it will save you some time. I found it kind of confusing following all the different quest chains, so here’s an all-in-one.

The prequests for the dreadsteed aren't so much difficult as time consuming and expensive (with the exception of the instance portions). Always make sure you've actually picked up the quest before you go off to do them, because it will save you a lot of time flying/riding/running. I almost missed picking them up a couple times due to a full quest log, so you may want to clear out a couple of those old quests you know you're not going to do.

I picked up the quest in Ironforge, and headed out to Burning Steppes to see Mor'zul Bloodbringer right away.

I didn't have the Burning Steppes flight path at the beginning of the quest, so I had to run in from Redridge. Be sure to grab the flight path at Morgan's Vigil, in the south-east corner because it will decrease your riding time when you go back and forth for all the quests. You should see the torches at the bottom of the path up the hill to it if you go a little east from where you enter the Steppes from Redridge.

To find Mor'zul Bloodbringer, all you need to do is follow the road across the Steppes, past Blackrock Mountain. Continue past the mountain, and the head north, up into the north-west corner (yes, the opposite one from the flight path) where the Altar of Storms is. Mor'zul Bloodbringer is just off to your left. Coordinates are 12,31 if you have the mod.

He’ll give you ‘Rage of Blood’, the quest to begin making the Xorothian Glyphs. You can then hearth or go back to the flight path. Since you’ll need to go Winterspring to kill owl beasts, do whichever will take you there fastest.

Suggested coordinates fro killing these guys are 65, 21; 64, 18; 64, 21; and the surrounding area. The drop rate is frustratingly low, so allow yourself at least an hour to collect 30 Raging Beast’s Bloods. Once you have them all, it’s back to Mor'zul Bloodbringer. He’ll direct you to give it to his assistant, so for that part you only have walk a few steps.

Next comes the part where you get to start spending all of your money.

Wheel of the Black March:
Large Brilliant Shard x6
Dark Iron Ore x25

Doomsday Candle:
Black Dragonscale x3

Bell of Dethmoora:
Elixir of Shadow Power x2

As soon as you bring him all of these materials, Gorzeeki Wildeyes is going to send you to buy an Arcanite Bar, so to save time, buy one of those as well when you collect the other items.

The materials you need to buy from the Auction House or other players were roughly these prices:
Mats: (Nazgrel, June 2008)
Large Brilliant Shard x6- 16g each x6 = 96g
Dark Iron Ore x25 - 7-9g
Black Dragonscale x3 - 3g
Elixir of Shadow Power x2 - 10g
Arcanite Bar- 13g

I was lucky enough to already have the shards from disenchanting, which saved me 96g.

Total spent on quest to that point: 35g, 131g including the cost of the shards.

Turn in ‘Wheel of the Black March’, ‘Doomsday Candle’, and ‘Bell of Dethmoora’ to Gorzeeki Wildeyes.

Pick up ‘Arcanite’, and then since you already have the bar, talk to him again and finish the quest.

I did ‘Lord Banehollow’ next. You pick up the quest from Gorzeeki Wildeyes, and he also sells you the potions for the quest. They’re bind on pick up and come in stacks of three. They also turn you and your mount a nice shade of purple.

Shadowy Potions (6g for a stack of three) brought my total up to 137g.

Grab your potions and head to Felwood. If you skipped the zone, it’s the one north of Ashenvale. If you’ve already been there, fly to Emerald Sanctuary. You could also go to Moonglade, but that means running through the furbolg den (which is too much work if you haven’t at least attained ‘Unfriendly’ rep and have to fight through). Once you’re in Felwood, follow the road north until you reach Jaedenar. It’s on your left, directly of the road. There’s some broken pillars to mark the entrance. Use one of the potions and ride in.

Running in to talk to Lord Banehollow is probably the easiest part of the quest. It just takes a while because you have to ride from Emerald Sanctuary. He’s found in the very back of Shadow Hold. If you did the ‘Flawless Fel Essence’ warlock quest, it's the same place where you have to fight the Jaedenar Legionaires, only this time they won't be throwing you across rooms because you have your potion on.

The potion will not make the sludges friendly, so if you don't want to take on more than one at once, keep that in mind and don't just run past them. I also had to fight the first succubus, but that may have been because killing her was an objective of a quest I had when I ran in. Killing her won't draw agro from anything else, so don't worry if she attacks you as well.

Once you get to Banehollow, he will give you the quest to ‘Ulathek the Traitor’. I had a 64 hunter helping me with killing Ulathek. She didn't have the potions, so I took mine off and fought through Shadow Hold with her until we got to Ulathek, who is just a little bit back from Banehollow. He’s in one of the small rooms up a ramp in a circular area. I had to use my second potion because you need to talk with him to complete the quest properly. He attacks you after you confront him and draws a small mob. After we downed him (it was actually pretty easy and I probably could have soloed it, but I didn't want to risk it and waste a potion), she hearthed out and I ran back to Banehollow to complete the quest and hand over another 150g for the Xorothian Stardust.

The vendor is just off to his right. The way the cursor turns into the vendor money sack icon is a good give away if you’re not sure which one he is.

This section of the quest will potentially take long enough to require you to use two of the three potions. The third one is just a back up, or for if you want to turn yourself purple at some point in the future.

Total cost to this point: 287g

Now it’s time for your first instance trip. Once you return to Gorzeeki Wildeyes with the Xorothian Stardust, you’ll receive the ‘Imp Delivery’ quest, which requires you to go to Scholomance in the Western Plaguelands. Any competent instance group will do for this one, as there isn’t any special extra-hard fights that the quest makes for you. I did it with a paladin, hunter, rogue, and mage. None of us had the Scholomance key, but the rogue picked the lock on the door. We only lost the hunter once in the reliquary because she was feared into a mob, but other than that we were fine. They were all above level 65, I was the only one at 60. Remember you have to do it as a five person group. Do it as a raid and it won’t work.

All you have to do is clear to the Alchemy Lab, which is in Ras’s room. You have to kill Rattlegore to get the key for the door into the section of the instance with the alchemy lab. Then you can procees to Ras. It’s best to clear the room first. Then while everyone recovers health and manna, let the imp out and he’ll make the parchment for you. No enemies will pull in the process.

Upon returning, I had to purchase J'eevee's Jar, Black Lodestone, and Xorothian Glyphs because I'm not lucky enough to know a warlock who already had them.

Total cost: 250g + 287g already spent = 537g.

Now you’ll be ready for the final step, which is in Dire Maul in Feralas. If you are running Dire Maul with a warlock who already has the glyphs, lodestone, and jar, you may want to pick up a lodestone of your own (if you feel you can afford it) so that you can repair the candle, bell, and wheel as well. It's best to have one warlock focus on it, but having a back-up repair person is useful. You want to do the west half of the instance. If you don’t have the key or someone who can pick the lock, you’ll have to start with east.

When running Dire Maul, you have to clear up to Immol’thar. In order to do so, you have to get rid of the retaining shield which is surrounding him. To deactivate it, you have to clear the mobs from around the pylons in the instance, which look like giant crystals.

The pylons:
The first one is in the first courtyard you enter.
Two pylons are upstairs, past where you find Tendris Warpwood.
Once you have the two upstairs, go back past where Tendris Warpwood was, and out into the circular room where you can see Immol’thar surrounded by the shield. Clear the mobs from around the pylons and the shield should go down. You’ll know it worked because an NPC will yell.

Kill Immol’thar, and try to get the corpse out of the circle. I had a skinner in my group, and that took care of it pretty well. This just makes it easier to see what’s going on in the circle.

Make sure you have a lot of soul shards when you go in to set up the summoning circle. I was warned by a guild mate to have a large supply, he said his friend had to restart the instance when he did the quest because he ran out of shards doing the ritual, and recommended that I have 30 on hand. Naturally not wanting to have to do it over, I went in with every free space in my inventory full of soulshards (I think I had 43). I only ended up using about ten, but I'd suggest having 15-20 ready when you start. More can be made off the creatures that summon once you begin the ritual, but depending on that risks failing the quest, so it's better to go in prepared.

Once you’re done with Immol’thar, use J’eeve’s Jar, and the imp will set up the sircle. Make sure everyone has had time to recover and is ready to fight the mobs that will spawn before you set up the circle. The imp will set out the candle, bell, and wheel. They all float above the ground, and you’ll know they’re damaged in the fight if they settle to the floor.

I did this run with three geared 70s (mage, resto druid, and a rogu)e and a 64 hunter, and all of them knew how to play their classes, so it went pretty easily and I was free to circle during the fight a focus on keeping everything working.

If you do pull agro while trying to repair one of the implements, just use howl of terror. Normally it's a really, really bad idea in an instance, but since the room has already been cleared and the enemies won't leave the summoning circle anyways, it gets them off you and allows you to do your repair. Then your tank or another group member can collect their agro.

Even with an over powered group, the fight seemed really long. It ended just in time because the healer was starting to run out of manna. All around the edge of the circle are glyphs, they will light up and glow a pinkish colour as the fight goes on, and once they’re all lit it will end, so that will give you a bit of an idea of how much longer it will take. Also watch for the felguards, once four have spawned it’s pretty much finished.

After you clear the mobs in the summoning circle, take a few minutes to rest, and recover health and manna. Once everyone is ready, use the Xorothian Glyphs to summon the Dreadsteed, a 62 elite. Just before the Deadsteed dies, its master, Lord Hel'nurath will spawn. Have one or two people finish of the Dreadsteed (preferably an off-tank and a dps) and have the rest concentrate on Lord Hel'nurath.

Then all you have to do is right-click the spirit and finish the quest. You’ll be able to summon your Dreadsteed as soon as you get outside.

Cost Breakdown:

Unavoidable: 156g
This is only in the best case scenario where you find some way to get all the purchased items for free off of friends, guild mates, and kind-hearted people, and you know a warlock who stills has J'eevee's Jar, Black Lodestone, and Xorothian Glyphs and will run you for free.

Average expected total: 537g
Most likely, you’re going to have to buy everything. It hurts your World of Warcraft wallet, but it’s not as bad vendor purchased mounts after riding training (which comes free with the Dreadsteed), and it looks so much cooler.

With a warlock who has the items: 287g – 387g
Warlocks still in possession of J'eevee's Jar, Black Lodestone, and Xorothian Glyphs could run you for free if they’re feeling generous or bored, or they may ask for up to 100g (some might ask for more). Either way, it saves you money.

ok, for some reason people either made a very long guide or a guide on 1 area. so i took the most recent guide and made it shorter, (uh hope u dont feel offended katy). specificly a list of items to buy and a 20 step guide.

BUY or OBTAIN:
Large Brilliant shard x 6
Dark iron ore x 25
Black dragonscale x 3
Elixir of shadow power x 2
Arcanite bar x 1

after buying all this u should have at least 406 spare gold if u intend to buy everything.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Start the Quest the demon trainer in Ironforge or Orgrimmar gives you.

2. Go to Burning Steppes, coord 12,31 and start Rage of blood.

3. Go to Wintersprings, coords 65,21 64,18 and 64,21 for Rage of blood.

4. Complete the quest.

5. Go the the Assistant and complete the quests where u give him the items you bought.

6. Talk to him again and start Lord Banehallow

7. Buy the potion from the guy.

8. Go to Felwood.

9. Go to Jaednar in Felwood.

10. Drink the potion u bought and enter the cave.

NOTE: potion makes orcs friendly but not the sludges.

11. If you dont wanna die kill the sludges 1 by 1.

12. Talk to Banehallow

13. Start Vlathek the traitor.

NOTE: Vlathek is a little back from Banehallow

14. Talk to Vlathek and he turns aggressive with his buddy's, kill Vlathek but avoid the others and run back to Banehallow.

15. Buy the stardust from the merchant nearby and complete the quest by going back the Gorzeeki Wildeyes, And start Imp dilivery.

16. Do Svholomance and kill Rattlegore for the key to alchemy lab in Ras' room, in the room let the imp out and complete the quests.

NOTE: buy J'eevee's Jar, Black Lodestone, and Xorothian Glyphs

17. Do Dire Maul West.

18. Kill those around pylons, the pylons are in these locations: in the first courtyard you enter. 2 are upstairs, past where u find tendris warpwood. youll know if you got them all cuz an npc will yell when your done. go back to where tendris warpwood was and inside a circular room, there is a boss there.

19. Kill him either out of his circle or skin him so he doesnt bother you.

20. Start the summoning and kill everything, keep the wheel bell and candle fixed and talk to the dread steed spirit and...

CONGRATULATIONS!
CHAIN QUEST COMPLETE

REWARD:
SUMMON DREADSTEED!

OK as far as the DM thing goes, get a feral druid, my group make up was:

70 Feral druid
66 lock

first just clear to the first boss(the big tree guy) all you have to do is pretty much hug the left wall and kill 2 mobs(cake). next, once you get to the boss, there is a tree to the right of him, put the lock there, and have him stay, its one of the few places where you are garunteed no random ghosts.

NEXT, you have the feral druid stealth to each of the pylons to disactivate them, all you have to do is kill all the guys to disactivate it, pretty simple,eh? Now if u solo all the guys arond the crystal then you are garunteed two things, 1: no mana drains, and 2: none of teh little guys spawn after killing the big ones, pretty nice eh? i recomend taht the druid just pop into bear form and grab 3 guys, then swipe like a mad man while mangling. also when deactivating the crystals on the top floor above the tree boss, watch out for the hunter boss, she has a MASSIVE agro range, even for a 70. And im not gonna waste my time telling you where the pylons are because its much more simpler to search Dire Maul in the search bar on thottbot and get a map, it helps a bunch. :D

NEXT, once all the pylons are deactivated, you can go get ur lock friend from his tree and go on to the boss. there is no way around it, you HAVE to kill the last boss, he is simple, just get in bear form and dps down, easy enough. And i would recomend that you drag the boss away from the center of the little arena so he doesnt die on top of where the little imp puts one of the pieces, it makes it harder on the lock to repair.

NEXT, once the boss is down, and u r ready to get busy, let the imp out of his jar. He will place 3 pieces of stuff ina triangle around the center. Basically your job is to protect these, if one gets damaged you will hear a loud sound and it will lower a little, thats when the lock must repair it, it costs 1 soul shard to repair, so make sure u braught plenty. As soon as the imp leaves, the real fun starts. There will be multiple ips spawning on the outside of the ring and make their way to the center, your job is to kill them b4 they dmg the items, sounds easy huh? not so much... also a bunch of felguards will spawn too, the imps dont hurt you more than like 1 dmg, so tahts no prob, but the felguards can beat u up good if there is enough on you. The main job of the druid is to swipe like crazy and jsut make sure everythign is attacking him, and try to kill the felguards as much as possible, this will allow the lock to fix any items that go bad. if the druid is running low on health then pop on a barkskin and heal yourself. i had to do that twice, but it wasnt too bad, and if u have to use your chalenging roar, or lock use fear. this part will go on for bout 5 mins or so.

NEXT, Once all the imps and felguards dissapear, the hard part is over, you can relax a bit. Now you have bout 20 secs till the horse spawns, so heal/mana up fast. one of two things will happen: just the horse will spawn, or the horse AND a 62 rare will spawn with him, if the rare does spawn, he spawns bout 5-10 secs after the horse, so taht gives you time to pull the horse away so u dont have to take both. now for this fight, just tank the horse with you back facing the steps, that way when he knocks you in the air, you wont take as much dmg because it slopes upward. Just tank and spank him donw, hes not that tough. Once he is killed, just talk to the dreadsteed spirit, and TA DA! you have the summon dreadsteed spell. Now you can just hearth away, or kill the rare if he spawned.

and that is how you successfully 2 man the last part of the lock epic mount quest. good luck and happy hunting!

Ok you went back to the Altar of Storms and you turn int he Scholo quest you are so excited that you finally got done with the scholo run well guess again... YOu come back and you need to purchase over 300 in gold items needed for the next part.. thats right the next part you are no where near done... get these items and then prepare to head to Diremaul West. When you go there you will need to enter the instance and clear all 5 areas in that instance you will need to clear the bosses and then once you are done you cna enter teh prison. But be warned Warlock go in with minimum of 20 shards and continue to collect them as you go do not use shadow burn or soul fire life drain and tap your way in...and when you get to the prison prepare to do what I call Banish Pulling. Pally Rogue Warlock Priest and Warrior are your best bets no hunters and no mages.. you can its jus that I have found that this combo would be better. Remember soulshards at elast 20 going in and just banish and no shadowburning...or soul fire.

Once you have all of the 5 crystals disabled you then go in and heal up inside the prison. When your ready remind the group that your tanks go in any minions or petds in healers have to stay outside and try to drag Illthar off the pedestal and also kill the eyes of Kilrog dont let them get you. Once you are done and have killed the big mean dog. Guess what your still not done....

Heal up have everyone rebuff and get ready..

Next step:

release the imp out of the jar.,

Once he sets everything up be ready to feed the wheel while everyone else deals with teh mobs you have better things to do then kill so do that. when your done feeding the wheel the Steed will come thru and so will his master now you have to be ready to fight take out the master and tame the steed. Hope fully this will help you because I went thrue it and no-one could tell me but bits and peices and I was miffed everytime I thought I was done I wasnt'... so good luck look for me on Shadow Moon Realm..

Just did the ritual with my group:
me 61,2 70 locks,70 hunter and a 65 feral druid

there are many imp waves,but honeslty they die pretty fast.im destro ,so ...shadowfury+rain of fire+hunter aoe+the candle burn and they fell like flies.
the 3 locks enslaved the 3 guards and it was so easy.disband them when the portal to xoroth open and they disappear.
the horse and lord something...were easy too.like normal elites so don't worry.
and stop bull#$%^ing.it really is worth it if you have friends...i got all the q items almost free and the final 3 were brought by a 70 lock so i got out quite cheap.

Completed the quest last night with 2 warlocks, hunter, pala and priest.

We both needed to finish the quest and so we did.
The other lock kept the ritual going while I was entertaining the big demons (banish and enslave).

Was very fun to do, havent had such and adrenaline rush for a long time :D

Noone died during the ritual, we only had a whipe with the elementals.

Finally got this today.....

Dire Maul West. We didn't have a key. But, one of our 5 man group was a rogue with 300 lockpicking.

We got to the altar and our 5th bailed on us.

Th e4 of us killed ugly beast on altar. I had mats and began summoning ritual. We all got beat to red and died. Couldn't get scroll summon to work because i kept getting hit.

We went back, eventhough no armor. As we approach we culd still see demons in circle which was still active.

But they disappeared as we approached. Summoned dreadsteed and killed him and another demon.

Other lock, who had no mats was able to complete too.

These mats are re-usable.

We even added and summoned another warlock who missed all the fun and he finished quest too.

I recommend that locks with the mats do this for others for a reduced fee, since they are saving the 250 gold.

So, I guess the trick is to die as someone else mentioned.

I'm actually thinking of avoiding this series of quests to get the mount. I pretty much have decided to go for one of the pvp epic mounts instead. To be completely honest, I never use my felsteed anyway as I much rather my racial mount (and that doesn't cost any damn mana to raise).

I tend to quest with my other half who is a troll hunter, and I feel really guilty about having to drag him with me for so many lock quests when he doesn't get a thing out of it.

I am just curious how anyone finishes this nowadays since most people are in Outlands. I am stuck at Imp Delivery. That thing has been sitting in my inventory for MONTHS. I am usually not on during the school year since I teach, so no guildies. If anyone on Daggerspine wants to do a run through Scholo and DM, I will pay. If there is some odd ball way to do it solo or with one or two, please let me know.

Or, if you have suggestions as to how to find a group to do it, let me know that as well.

Man, it is an easy quest. If you are in a good guild, ask you friends to help, you need near 600g and 5 hours to do it.

Hi all, i know that for the warlock's dreadsteed quest, the last 3 mats Black Lodestone(50g)J'eevee's Jar(150g)& Xorothian Glyphs(50g) can be saved if another warlock has those. But if i were to get the dreadsteed with the help of another warlock, can the mats still be purchase after getting dreadsteed? i just need some confirmation from players that done that if the mats can be purchase after getting the dreadsteed using other warlock's mats. :)

Did this with druid, warlock, pally, warrior, hunter. It was tough but only wiped once at the top of the ramp past the ghosties - got adds. When we downed the horse & demon our lock didn't get his spell. Not sure if it bugged or he didn't have the quest to begin with... He hearthed out to run to grab the quest again, came back in and got the spel when he talked to the spirit again..

Ok i am pairing up with a warlock to do the last final part of this quest. My question is can we share buying the items like if i buy the lodestone and she buys the other item can we put them together to work when we get to Dm or does only 1 person have to have 3 of those items?

go shut off the nodes 5 of them great map on another post

go kill the dog make sure he is off the pad if he lands on a node spot it is immpossible to repair.

everyone strip take off all buffs

lock set up circle (free imp)

everyone die except the lock keep nodes up till all are dead

lock hellfire out with all mobs on him after everyone else is dead (the real trick is to die when the mobs do this works great cause they can't possible mess up the circle) when the lock dies the mobs will despawn

the cirlce should still be up and now the timer is still running (glich? who knows) run back if there is a big glowing circle then it is ready for summon if not repair the nodes that are down if any and wait till the timer runs it's course.

then summon steed everyone concentrate on steed when he falls everyone move to his master LOCKS! now is the time to finish you quest and get your mount, help fight after you have it.

i did this on 4-4-07

i am sure the otherway is how your supposed to do it but who really cares by this time you have begged every person on the server for help and paid them more than an epic mount would have costed ya anyway, so your just getting jewlery (SP).

Just got mine last night. My warlock is on Horde side, Laughing Skull server. If anyone needs help, get a group and pst Garagos or send me an in game mail. I have all the mats necessary to do the ritual and summon the steed in dire maul. Tips will be required and have the group ready before you invite me.

We got wiped during the initial fight but my corpse stayed in the circle and the remaing dudes vanished while the druid ran back. Had to wait 12 min until he could rez me and then we easily killed the dreadsteed and owner...

I have the final quest for the dreadsteed, however I don't know if I want to do it. I hardly ever use my felsteed, I prefer the other mounts available. My question is if I purchase another steed do I still have to pay for training, which is a lot more than what I have to spend for the other steed? I'm on alliance side, Scarlet Crusade. 54 Priest, 60 lock, 60 mage, 60 pally, 60 warrior did the quest with my lock buddy last night. If you’re a lock read this: http://www.wowwiki.com/Dreadsteed first and explain it to the party members. it helps a lot. I got this link from someone else on this thread and thank the moongodess for them. First, u have to kill all the mobs around all 5 crystals in the instance, thus breaking the crystals and letting the party in to attack Immol'thar. this guy is a joke, I barely had to heal anyone. After the lock activates J'eevee's Jar all hell breaks loose. We wiped a couple times. The damn mobs just keep coming and in the end ran out of mana. When we came back the circle of symbols on the floor had finished lighting up. we enslaved a demon and bamm! All the other mobs disappeared. Released the demon and he disappeared! Man that was nice. Next, I think the lock used something in his bag with the glyphs and summoned the dreadsteed and his master. Not so bad of a fight. Quest done!
So I guess if you wipe when fighting the endless mobs. Get back to the circle and don’t argo anything...just wait until the circle of glyphs is all the way lit up. I’m thinking SS the priest and just wait and watch. Once the circle goes crazy with light then res the party. I guess ill try this with my lock and confirm if this is true. By the way, the wiki page says it takes 6min to complete the circle but it seemed like more than that to me.

also, this would have helped the party better:

The Bell of Dethmoora restores health and mana to any Warlocks in the party (Ritual Bell Aura restores 150 health and 150 mana)
The Wheel of the Black March protects all party members (Black March Blessing , which absorbs 100 points of damage from every hit on anyone in the party). The Doomsday Candle burns anyone not in the party with fire damage (Ritual Candle Aura , 250 damage per second), and because of the Candle, you can ignore the Imps. The damage they do is minimal when the Wheel is active, and they die fairly quickly when the Candle is active. The party should therefore focus on the Dread Guards; there will be a total of 4 of them, although they come one at a time.

so have the party stay next to the wheel and keep argo off the lock so he/she can keep the bell, candle and wheel going.

Completed that quest yesterday in 40minutes

-Me, Warlock 60

The warlock 70 had the ingredients so i didn't have to pay the 250gold to summon that mount and most of the other ingredients were donations so i only had to pay the dust in Felwood, i got this mount for ~150-200gold. It rox.

Ok, so I know our first mount was free... but I would almost just rather pay the money up front and get my mount like everyone (except pallys) else. It took me three different groups to make it through scholo. I hadn't anticipating having to spend another 250g once I was done with that. Granted there's another lock I've been working with so hopefully he'll split the cost with me, I just thought I was done having to make all that money right now. I already sold all my enchanting supplies... Bah. Too much work. I'm really hoping this dreadsteed is worth all the trouble.

You absolutely need a group, this is in an instance (Dire Maul -- west side). All in all, its not a hard quest. 5 lvl 60s should be able to handle it well. If you dont have a priest, it can be tricky to get where you need to go since there is a portion where shackle undead is very helpful. Mor'zul's instructions explain quite well what to do. After you defeat immol'thar, release jeevee from his jar and he will set up the circle. simply have your whole party inside the circle fighting the many demons who come running in. It is useful to have an additional AoEer beyond the warlock who is doing this quest since the warlock will be mostly occupied with repairing the 3 elements of the circle. There will be a lot of demons running in to the circle and fighting your group, but if the warlock does his job and keeps the devices from failing, its actually pretty easy. The summoning portal takes a few minutes to complete and the warlock must have many soulshards to keep the repairs up (I used 10). Once the portal is complete rest up, rebuff and then summon the dreadsteed. After you have been fighting for a bit an elite demon will say something like "Who dares steal my steed?" and will join the fight against you. My all-60 party of 2 warlocks 1 druid 1 warrior and a paladin had no trouble completing any of the battles involved with this quest.

Also of note: Even if only one warlock has purchased the items for the summoning circle, repairing, and dreadsteed summoning, other warlocks with the same quest can still complete the quest. I and the other warlock in our party split the cost of 250G between us, saving us both 125 on our mounts. Since you keep the items after the quest it done, it may be possible to re-use the same items to complete the quest for another warlock.

Just got done running Scholomance and Dire Maul east with a 62 pally, 59 rouge, and me a 61 warlock. Worked great having the pally heal my Felguard and banished the elementals in Dire Maul. Just need the 250 gold to purchase the final items. So far this is much better than buying the riding skill.

Black Dragon Scale : 25g
Shadowy potion : 6g
Shadow potions (ran a guildie around to get the ghost mush and he made the potions) : 0g
Dark Iron Ore : 0g (ran guildie around to mine it)
Arcanite bars : 6g (bought arcane crystals and had guildie transmute)
Xorotian stardust : 150g
Large Brilliant Shards : 0g enchanting D/E drops from scholo and Dire maul East got all 6 shards
Final components : 250g

Total cost : 331g

Can't wait to get the 250g to get the steed :)

This quest needs a serious re-tuning.

Maybe at one time, back when level 60 was as high as you could go and you were basically just farting around that was all fine and dandy, but I'm going to end up spending MORE on this quest then it's actually worth.

I'm on Farstriders Alliance side and things are so effing expensive.

Here's a breakdown of my expenses so far.

35 black dragonscales: 190gp (60g/10)
6 shards: 60gp (10gp/each)
Shadow Power elixir: 0gp (hubby made them)
Arcanite Bars: (free, hubby did them too)
Shadowy Potion: 12gp
Xorotian Dust: 150gp
Dark Iron Ore: 15gp (I couldn't find enough veins to get all of it)

Total so far (without going to scholo or Dire maul yet): 427gp.

Now I need to spend another 300-ish gp for "final materials"? that's 727gp for this stupid ass quest.

Would have been cheaper to just pay to learn the skill.

Took out like three mobs on the way to the pool
Took a potion and ran right to the end and talked to Lord BH (I call him that cuz me n him are close)
Jumped off the edge, ran through 2 oozes (or is it Izes? idk w/e) then to the bridge to the traitor.
Talked to him, spamed Howl of Terror. Doted him, Conflag'd him, SB, and he was dead, took his heart and ran.
Got to Lord BH with like 9 n a half minutes left. Easy shizz

just did it! Me (warlock lvl 62) and a warlock lvl 70 did the whole instance alone, the event (enslaving and banishing the doomguards), i was taking care of the items (kinda hard tho, always getting interrupted by the imps), but it all went okay, and we got it. We only died once on the 1st time we tryed the event, but on the 2nd try we used SS and didnt even had to use them. I was just amazed, never expected we could do it. Anyways, the mount is totaly worth the money spent. I bought all the items without anyone's help, and its really worth it. With the outlands quests is easy to get back on your feet, regarding gold. Good luck for those trying it now :)

With the release of TBC it's virtually impossible to get a Scholomance group. I soloed my way in almost to the dragon whelp room but it was late so I had to stop because it took so long. Probably take less time to just get the mount from battlegrounds. They really need to fix this quest so it can be soloed. Everybody else can get their epic mount (by buying it) without needing help why should warlocks get screwed over?

What nobody mentions is that you have to take out the 5 crystal pillars in dire maul west then go to the prison of immol'thar (there are 2 pillers in the prison) we did that set up are circle and fought imps and demons till we all wiped, came back circle of runes was still up, demons were gone, summoned dreadsteed killed him and his boss and thats it, 2 locks, warrior, and a hunter was it, cost me around 400g, if i woulda bought epic it woulda been around 650

So the person I was hoping to split the costs with hasn't been on in a while so I ended up buying all the supplies myself and ran both instances with some guildie friends of mine. Wasn't too hard, we were all high 50s, low 60s. Very doable. It was pretty fun too, I liked this instance. just dropped this bad guy last night with two warlocks, two pallies and a warrior. There has not been a good write up on this to date that I've seen in regards to a good walk thru so allow me to elaborate....

Head to the WEST instance at Dire Maul. Once in you will have to take out the five pylons around the west instance inorder to take out Immol'Thar. You will find a good map for this markng the pylons at:

Once you take out the Pylons you need to go for Immol'Thar. You do NOT need to clean out the entire prison chamber or EVEN the patrolling elementals around Immol'thars prison. Wait for a clearing and run between the circling patrol to the pedestal, but dont get to close. Now the fun begins.....
To drop the big bad dog(a.k.a. Immol'Thar) you need to have a caster dedicated to taking out the GREEN floating eyes. Have your MT and MA focus on the dog while one of the casters takes out the eyes. If you do not take out the eyes you are done, they slow casting time too much for any one to heal or nuke/kite effectively. Once you drop him charge back up and once ready release Jee'vees's from the jar. get ready for waves of imps that hit for 1 hp(unless the candle goes down) You as the warlock need to make sure your party know the mobs MUST stay off of you or they die. If the candle goes out these little guys hit for 100hp and there will be a lot of them. In between keeping the wheel, bell and candle going you will have to enslave the deathguards to help you fight and banishing any others that might come at you. you can track you progress by watching for the markings around the circle, once there are 9 of these marking you can use the scroll and this and I believe this will stop the wave of imps and deathguards. When I did this I thought I was going to get a ton of time to recharge, but the horse came right away. Im not sure if we had to wait for the circle to set up and that stops the aggroing mobs or not, but it wasnt a big deal seeing as we had two deathguards enslaved to take on the horse :P(Warlocks rule). As a side note ritual of doom is a great spell for these guys. Make sure to take out the horse first and then focus on the Master (doomguard looking guy) and kill him too. If you are one of the lucky few to make it to this point talk to the spirit of your new dreadsteed and finish the quest.
Hope this helps as it took me three times to get this right and a lot of aggrevation as most people do not like DM west as the drops there are slim to none. Good luck and happy hunting!

EDIT: Its been over 9 months now since I have downed this horse, wow does time fly. As for the part with the scroll, once the summoning circle gets the 9 signs around it, it will wipe out all the mobs. You dont have to click the scroll to finish the summoning ring circle, it will do it on its own. When the mobs disappear, charge back up and then when you are ready to fight again, click the scroll.

we wtfpwnd horsie last night with some guildies, a group made up of 1 war, 1 priest, 1 lock and 2 shaman. after the event our priest logged on as his lock and got summoned to our position, and got to finish his quest as well. everyone a happy bunny.

btw this wasn't hard at all for us, magma totem provided nearly all the AOE we needed for the imps. on the final mob the group took horsie down while the warrior tanked the demon. a fun event though :-)

ok i have heard of a trick of finding a warlock the has already done it and saved the mats, that if you bring him with you he could use his mats for you that you could use it as your own. I personly cant make much over 100g i spend it to fast and if this is true it would help me so much i have all the other mats but 2 arcanite bars and 10 elixir of shadow power so i am just about done and not haveing that extra 150g or so to spend it would help alot.

Just finished it today with the help of a guildmate who'd already done it and had the summoning items. As long as you focus on the dreadguards when they spawn and keep the three items maintained, you'll be fine. Really, the ritual is the hard part. Fighting the dreadsteed and its master is no big deal, and once you drop the steed you can turn in the quest to its spirit even if the master isn't dead. I think.

We did it with a 70 warlock, two shadow priests (61 and 57), me (61 warlock), and a 70 paladin who had never been to Dire Maul before. It's a pain to get all of the items, but once you do the whole thing, it's worth it. Coolest-looking ground mount in the game, bar none.

If any locks on Durotan are looking to save some gold on the last stage of this quest, whisper or in-game-email SelfDestruct. SD has the lodestone, jar and glyphs (250g cost) and can partake in the last stage with you (having 2 locks makes this Dire Maul part of the quest easier as well!)

This was one big pain in the butt.

Me and some guildies finished the quest for the scholo key and headed into scholo. Me (62 lock), 63 war, 63 priest, 62 mage and a PUG 60 hunter.

We were all sorta clueless, never having been there before. But it went pretty smooth. The hunter dropped part way due to "not being able to handle it." lol.

The crappy part was DM. We had no freaking clue about that place. Our 63 priest changed to her alt (a 70 Druid) due to that toon having the key to DM West.

We were so lost. Had no clue we had to disable the pylons... And the last one we couldn't find. Ends up while I was scouting with my Eye of Kilrog, the Pylon wasn't appearing for some reason.

When we finally started the ritual it was... Interesting. All in all it was pretty easy with just us 4. I knew what to expect for the ritual, as having read up on it.. But I failed to find info on DM West. It's retardedly easy. We were just trying to make it more complex and in doing so, got stuck. lol.

But I fiiiiinally have my epic demon horsy! Yatta!

To clarify:

The "pre-mats" you do need to collect are:
3x black dragon scales
2x elixir of shadow power
1x arcanite bar
25x dark iron ore
6x large brilliant shard
and spend 6g for shadowy potions and 150g for Xorothian dust.

If you have a warlock friend you save 250g buy using there "final mats" Xorothian Glyphs, Jeeve's Jar and Black Lodestone when you do the ritual in Dire Maul. But you still have to collect all the "pre-mats" and take the imp in a jar into scholo, in order to get the "Dreadsteed of Xoroth" quest.

Let me clarify, it is only this final quest where the warlocks can "share" the items. Turning in scales and arcanite and such are all part of prerequisite quests. Each warlock must on his own complete the prerequisites which include getting many materials, doing a 5-man scholo run, etc.

For the quest "Dreadsteed of Xoroth", it is sufficient for one warlock to have the materials. Every warlock who wants to complete the quest must have the quest in the log book (which means doing all of the pre-requisites) but only one warlock going to DM needs to purchase the 250G worth of items.

I would honestly recommend, dont do this quest, it is cheaper to by Epic Mount and the increased Riding skill, this quest is more expensive and really not worth the bull#$%^.

The Scholo part can be done 10 man. I did it about a week ago. Just make sure after the boss in lab is killed that you are made raid leader and ask everyone to leave or kick them. Then release imp and let him do his thing.

As far as the final fight with Dreadsteed and master, you most definately need a team and make sure you have at least one mage with you for DPS. The knockback is insane (think of the Hydra boss in Zul for an idea)

We have completed this quest with 2 warlocks, 1 druid, 1 shaman and 1 warrior. When you kill the 2 headed boss in DM west, Warlocks starts the quest and waves of lvl 60 Imps enter the area. And 4 LVl 60 elite demons enter one by one. With 2 warlocks, it was very easy. One of them did aoe in the center, and the other one repaired the items. Them when the elite demons came, they banished and enslaved them all so we just fought with the imps only. WHen you stay alive enough, all the mobs vanishes and Dreadsteed and a Demon enters the arena. I tanked the demon while they killed the steed but the demons knockbacks out of the arena and hits hard. Very exciting quest tough..

Save yourself 250g on buying the final materials for this quest. If you are Alliance on LAUGHING SKULL, send a tell or mail message to Linder. I'll summon it for you for 75gold.

Just finished this as a lv 60 Lock. Shutting down the pylons is a bigger problem then the final battle. Went with 67 Rogue, 70 Shaman, 70 Holy Pally. The final fight was a problem when mana was running low but health never really got below 75%.

I had about 20 shards and used maybe 12-15 so just make sure your soulbag is full before you do this because you cant make more once the ritual starts. It takes about 6 minutes for the ritual to finish so just hang on tight until then. When its finished, anything that's attack will run away and you'll know when it says they are being "Recalled to Xoroth."

After they are recalled, let every one heal and then use the glyphs to summon the horse. It will be a lv62 elite. Also with the spawn will be a lv62 Dreadlord. tank and spank then talk to the horse when you finish. End.

....if you are playing a warlock, you OUGHT to have a warlock mount. Sure, you can get exalted with whatever faction you want and get that mount, but you are playing a warlock, so get the damn proper mount. It's a part of the game. Getting groups together for Scholomance and Dire Maul is not THAT hard. If it is, join another guild.

Yes, depending on your server it may cost a bit more than 650g, but look at it this way: apart from the reputation issue, every rogue, mage, warrior, what-have-you, will have the same damn mount (permitting differences between green and purple ) - but the dreadsteed, to which another poster alluded, is uniquely warlock, no matter your reputation level. Do the quest.

Admittedly, I don't have mine yet; I am working on the last bit of gold in order to get the jar. But when I am done, no other class of character will have the same mount. Frankly, I like the idea of that. And the mount is friggin' cool.

For example I would have the black lodestone and xorothian glyphs and the other guy has j'eevee's jar? Would that work? Or does one person have to have them? First of all let me say until today I havent seen any of these posting regarding this quest I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure it out and will give you more warning than is posted up above for anyone who is trying this: Items needed before any instances 25 Dark iron Ore, 35 Black Dragonscales, 10 Elixurs of Shadowypower, 6 Brilliant shards, 150 (gold) for the stardust, 10 vials of Owls blood, all this for before you go to any instances. Be prepaired this is not going to be like all the other minion and felsteed quests of running around and its handed too you.

When you are ready you need to get a good solid group to complete this quest. Once you are done you will be happy you did it. I am still working on the final part only because the postiing about needing at least 10 Shards wasnt around when I tried it.

I did it tonight with a priest, shaman, warrior and druid. I just focussed on keeping the buffs working and enslaving/banning/killing the elites the imps can ddo nothing if you are PW: shielded and the buff is running.. they die by a buf so aoe is unncessary really Just enslave a elite demon banish one attack one with the enslaved one and help it kill with a well placed shadow bolt here and there ;) second part was easy.. just kill the horse and do the dreadlord afterwards. Horse kicks you really bad though :s

I just grabbed mine tonight. It was pretty fun. After AGES of begging for a Scholomance group, I did all the quests and blah blah...

The pre-mats and the stardust cost me about 300g.

The final mats, didn't cost me a thing. I did it with another warlock.

All in all, I think I'd rather do these quests than pay 700g for the mount/training.

The first portion of the quests, where you need all the ridiculous materials, isn't that difficult. It's just a trip to the Auction House, (and collecting Ghost Mushrooms for the Elixer of Shadow potions...). The following quests, in Jadenar and Scholomance, are a pain to get to and finish, all you need is patience. Hopefully, you have a guild or friends to help.

300g for one of the BEST looking mounts in the game, and training? Go for it. If you've got time, and would like to save gold, just keep on with it.

I had bought all the mats from Wildeyes, but because I was a lvl 66, Mor'zul did not shine a ! for me and I missed it.

Wasted everybodys time on a quest that left me talking to one pissed off Dreadsteed Spirit.

Did this last night with 2 'locks, 1 priest, 1 hunter and 1 druid.....tanks not necessarily required.

We died a couple times in DW West and once near the end during fight with dread guards and imps because of a major laaaaaaaag but even then we were able to finish. When we got back to the circle, the circle was filled with 4 dread guards and a bunch of imps, just like when we all died. The mobs were surrounded by a pinkish energy field that we just walked through. Odd thing was, once we got into the field, all of the remaining mobs disappeared. At that point, I summoned the steed, we killed it and his/her master and viola, I now have the dread steed.

So, yes...if you die, you can keep going or, if you log, you can always start from scratch since the 3 items ya need are not consumed.

This is a hard quest if you think you have to survive it. 2 60 warrios(1 prot 1 Fury(me)) 2 warlocks and a priest(not geared that great) completed this. Take out pylons and pick up a quest in the courtyard since it asks you destroy pylons Immolthar, and the Prince...

Dont clear the pats that circle Immoltahr's cage.. they have Arcane Spawnlings that kick the living crap out of you and you r healer will not like dumping that much mana on you. Just run through when there is a break.

Killed Immolthatar... if you can take the beast you can know how to take him. Dropped some nice Warrior gear.

OK... so the next part seems to be harder than it used to be but Im not sure if the summoning lock remembered how to make it easier ...ie use the 3 glyphs. We had more than 4 demons that is for sure.. I would say more like 8. And a tonne of imps... it lasted a long time. The 2 locks got a demon under control each. Party wiped except for the 2 locks. I think glyph duty is a major must... we didnt know to use em more than once I think.

After that the horse can be summoned ... DPS to 50 % and then grab the Horsees master... kill them both... That part was actually pretty easy.

Ok you got all this stuff and how to get teh quest to begin with?

You reach level 58 btw not 60 and you go to Stormwind to get it form the demon trainer. He gives you this quest to find the quest giver in Burning Steppes (Altar of Storms) NW in the Burning Steppes next to Black Rock Mountain. once you go there if you have that Grocery List I mentioned and you can complete it faster than expected so far I am on 1 week. What no one tells you and what I discover once you get everything on the list you have to do a 5 Man Scholo run. (do not group with anyone else that has a quest there unless its a fellow warlock) I did that and I ended up doing everyone else quest but mine. You will need the viewing room key from Rattlegore. If you dont have it hopefully someone will and you can get in there. I was frustrated everytime tried to do it that the group wanted to get epics and blues get the understanding before going in that you come first otherwise they will walk all over you.

Then when you get to the alchemy lab remember you dont have to kill anything but the mobds next to lab table and its too the right. Once done you can go kill rattelogore if you so choose too.

As of today, probably since a few days (patch 2.4?) this quest is not working.

You can complete the quest, but when talking to the spirit you do not get the spell.

GM says they are aware of the problem and are working on a solution.

This happens only under some certain circumstances, but the GM's didn't elaborate, so can't say more.

If anyone has a problem with it or finds it is working again, please let all know, thank you.

I want to confirm (since I could not find this anywhere else) if you have multiple warlocks who are all on this quest, they can all obtain the dreadsteed from one run.

Something to note that my group discovered when going for the dreadsteed was you can actually wipe on the waves of mobs, and return. They will despawn when you engage them but the summoning circle remains intact, letting you summon the dreadsteed without needing to go through the ritual again.
Not sure if this was a bug or intended but we still took succeeded in finishing the quest that way.

If you're using another warlock's summoning tools, two enslaved felguards really help keep the encounter calm and under control. This is the one time I'll put a pet on aggressive in an instance - let him find the aggro most of the time unless there's something you want him to focus on. You can swap to a new one when you get the opportunity and at least re-enslave on your own terms instead of having it break at an inconvenient moment.
