I was able to just buy the crests at the Auction House for 2 gold and 75 silver each.

I was also able to buy the shard, but I forget the price.

You need to get the Twilight Cultist Cowl, the Twilight Cultist Mantle and the Twilight Cultist Robe first by killing any mob around (I think). Then wear them and go to a lesser wind stone placed at and . Then some Templar will spawn and when you kill it you get the Abyssal Crest.

This requires 3 full Twilight Cultist sets to complete, so have fun farming.

it took me two hours to get 6 mantles 8 robes and 1 (yes one) cowl....seems they have strange drop rates

I need the crests for 0.5 upgrade questline. Can someone please give more explanation as to how to attain the crests?
Are they a drop from npcs? if so, which npcs?

Get 3 each of mantle, robe, cowl... (3 complete sets) or you can do just one set at a time to see how it works...

Go to one of the twilight camps and look for a lesser windstone, there are 2 per camp i think. Clear mobs around it, put on a mantle, robe and cowl and click on the windstone...

You get a dialog box... DON'T PROCEED YET... before telling the guy you're in disguise you can put your equipment back on for the fight.

Click the text to proceed to the fight... Kill him and get a crest... you'll need a total of 3, hence the 3 sets you'll need.

Small print explanation cos I certainly didn't follow what others were getting at above...

1. Kill Twilight Cultists, any sort, and get the three items that make up the Twilight Trappings (Mantle, Cowl and Robe), x3 (or xn if you need more abyssal crests). You need multiples as the elementals seem to destroy them as they begin the fight...
2. Find a LESSER windstone, none of the others will work, and clear the Twilight guys from around it.
3. Put on the Trappings before clicking on the stone. As kimchiguy guy says above - BEFORE talking to the guy and saying you're in disguise, put your own equipment back on for the fight - this means you can wear decent armour to fight the elementals that appear and drop the crests. Lvl 60 Elites.
4. Once back in your armour, click on the speak bit and then get ready to fight.
5. After fight, loot and move on to another one. The first windstone should have regenerated once you've done a second one.
6. Repeat until you have the amount of crests you need.
7. Find a Large Brilliant Shard on the AH or from a guild mate - it's pretty much a disenchant only... Oh, and price can be high!

This quest has been nerfed with patch 2.3.0 like so many others. Easily soloed by newly-dinged 70 warrior w green/blue gear. Also including an interfering Twilight Avenger

I just did this. It only uses up a robe at each stone. So, you only need 3 robes, 1 cape, and 1 mantle. And I easily did this solo as a level 60 shaman.

I'm pretty sure it's random which items it takes away from you because it changed every time for me. The first time it took everything except the robe, the next time it took only the mantle and the 3rd time took robe and mantle.

I have 24 Mantles, 15 Robes, and 0 Cowls. Great.

a 62 elite elemental (random type, do a search for "The Duke of" for them) spawns. they take 5-9 people to handle them effectively, the earth and water ones are significantly easier to handle than the fire and air.

they drop signet rings just like the 60 elites drop crests. The Greater Wind Stones need this amulet *and* a Twilight Cultist Ring of Lordship... which I'm assuming you use the signet rings to get. I'm honored right now so that quest is probably at revered.

The ring of lordship drops off of a rare mob around the cultist sites... I think I got mine in the southern camps.

I just soloed one of the Fire ones. Root and Bug them to death. Low dmg is the key dont break the root. They arent that tough :-)

Is there a respawn time on the Windstones?

the windstones have a respawn timer of like 5 minutes, and yes this and the set, as well as the ring you need to do a twilight lord are destroyed upon use. the rare mob that was mentioned sometimes drops the ring of lordship, so that you might be able to do a lord before you have revered reputation. however they are given to you in a quest just like this from the same NPC that gives you this quest. Bring her 5 large brilliant shards and 4 abyssal signets and she'll craft a ring.

Large Brilliant Shard :

Get this from an enchanter or buy from the Auction House.

Abyssal Crest:

1) Get Twilight Cultists Mantle - Drops from Twilight Mobs
2) Get Twilight Cultists Cowl - Drops from Twilight Mobs
3) Get Twilight Cultists Robe - Drops from Twilight Mobs

4) Find a Lesser Wind Stone (one at loc (38, 46) and another at loc (39, 42))
5) Equip the 3 items you collected.
6) Click on the Lesser Wind Stone.
7) Equip your regular gear before you click on the option to challenge the Templar.
8) Click on the message. The templar will spawn and take away your Mantle, Cowl and Robe. Kill him and he always drops an Abyssal Crest.
9) Rinse and repeat 2 more times. ;)

Here is how the summons at Silithus windstones work:

The summon has 2 properties: A) Difficulty and B) Elemental Type.

A) Windstone type dictates difficulty of the summon (easy to hard: Templar => Duke => Royal).

You need a full Twilight Trappings set to summon a templar at a lesser windstone.
You need a full Twilight Trappings set + Twilight Cultist Medallion of Station to summon a duke at a windstone.
You need a full Twilight Trappings set + Twilight Cultist Medallion of Station + Twilight Cultist Ring of Lordship to summon a royal at a greater windstone.

B) Crest/Signet/Scepter remove randomness of elemental type of the summon (Air, Earth, Fire, Water). Type of element after crest/signet/scepter controls elemental type of the summon. Without crest/signet/scepter, elemental type of the summon will be random.

Type of item is linked to difficulty level of the summon.

Crest controls => Summon Templar from a lesser windstone in Silithus
Signet controls => Summon Duke from a windstone in Silithus
Scepter controls => Summon Royal from a greater windstone in Silithus

We think it is possible to use a wind stone to ambush a duke of the Abyssal Council. To do this, however, one must commune through the wind stone, and convince the council you are a middle ranked leader of the Twilight's Hammer.

Such a gambit requires a replica of the cult's medallion of station. I can create the medallion, but I will need a large brilliant shard, and crests worn by the Abyssal Templar.

Bring these to me and I will do the rest.
