Metzen is located in Searing Gorge near the tunnel to Loch Modan, he's guarded by a group of dark iron dwarves. I suggest bringing a party unless you can take them all.

Great reward if you want to show off you mount.

Keep in mind that, while the Fresh Holly you receive from the Revelers is soulbound, this quest reward is not soulbound. Preserved Holly may be given to other players (or auctioned in the Auction House).

Before you do this, I suggest making either places your home: Southshore or Iron Forge. You'll want to harth out of there.

There's an easy way to rescue Mentzel at the Searing Gorge WITHOUT help and WITHOUT being a really high level. I did this as a level 43 human warrior with some good gear and Retaliation. You will die from this, but it gets the job done. I'd stock a couple of potions and some food if you really want to run away alive.

To get to the Searing Gorge, go to the Bad Lands and go to co-ords 6, 30. There should be a path somewhere there. Then, once you're in SG, go to co-ords 68, 34. You should see a camp full of dwarves holding poor Mentzel hostage.

Okay, first take out one of the patrolling dwarf by using a ranged weapon to lure him to you, you don't want to be mobbed. After the battle, rest until you have full health.

Then, cast Retaliation and run like hell to Mentzel. Once you have talked to him, Mentzel should fly out of there safely and you should have completed the quest. Too bad you'll mostl likely die. Just be sure you can harth out of there.

This quest DOES have a level requirement and isn't obtainable at level 39 as of patch 2.3. When knowing the level obtainable please post so everyone knows whom uses this site.

The mobs around him in Tanaris can be excruciatingly annoying. All four are linked, and all four can disarm. As a Warrior, this leads to not having a blade during 90% of your fight with at least the four of them.

Ok - the silly reindeer is under a thatched roof thing directly opposite the gate and then the campfire as you come into the pirate area.

You may have to kill a couple pirates or dock workers but easy to find him.

2007 - This year I went to Searing Gorge (screenshot submitted) - he's not hard to find if you go west from Thorium Point (the FP place). Avoid the golems, spiders, dark iron guys - and be aware there is a group that patrols.

You must click on the reindeer, and then on the quest area that talks about the dust. Clicking the dust itself will not work.

First, i did it this morning (lvl 47 warlock), had help from a mage lvl 44.

Location: Kalimdor, Tanaris, entrance cove is 68,41. the cape on the east
you will find Metzen in the middle of the village, in a stable.
There are 4 mobs infront and several around.
Mobs is about lvl 44-45.
If you are not much higher or even lvl 60, bring friends for help,cause they all attack at the same time.

We did it the way, that one aggros, ran away and other finished quest.

In Searing Gorge, the target is near 70, 34.
This is the road intersection to the SW of the tunnel entrance.

He is surrounded by multiple 45-47 mobs which will come at you in a group of about 5 or 6.

Easily soloed with a 60 Mage (of course), but with a little help you should be able to do it as low as 45.

The reward is preserved holly. This, unlike the festive mistletoe fresh holly you get, does NOT have a 7 day duration on it. Wait until june and put it on the AH :D

Yeah, I went to tanaris, and got a "you don't have permission to loot that corpse" when I tried to open the nice little baggie i got from the smokey goblin, and *pling* it was gone from my inv.! Guess who bit his tounge pretty hard, and grinded his teeth all the way back to IF... Yup... T'was me... >:( Guess that teaches me to loot EVERYTHING from a bag/chest/whatever at once!

I found Metzen in the Searing Gorge along the crossroads/T-junction on the road from Stonewrought Pass (from Loch Modan) into the Dustfire Valley. This is in the North-East of the area.

Hopefully that's of assistance.

Found him in Searing Gorge today at 68,34. 5 mobs spawned on top of me while I was getting mana. Dotted and killed them all and clicked to "talk" to the reindeer. Chose the option to sprinkle dust on him, quest complete.

Its pretty easy for druids or toon who can sneak in. I stealthed as a cat into the pirated area and found metzen at 73,48. He is definitely surrounded by mobs of pirates. The place is usually camped but when I went there was no one but me. First I targeted Metzen. From stealthed cat, I immediately changed to regular form and as fast as i could, I right clicked the bag of powder and clicked Metzen, the pirates charged and I just stayed there taking a beating until I died. Upon death i noticed I had completed the quest. I took rez sickness and moved on lol.

As of 12/15/07... Metzen is in Searing Gorge at (69,34) surrounded by a few ~44 mobs, and the kidnapper that attacks you as soon as you talk to the reindeer.

Located in Searing Gorge. South of Stonewrought Pass (Loch Modan entrance gate). There is a camp (first cross-road south of loch entrance). Basically the N/E side of the map. Really easy.

Alright, Just did this quest, Didn't get attacked once, Lvl 60 Warrior. Just walked up on my mount sprinkled him, and said quest complete and walked off, With mobs around... ? Maybe a bug, But cord's are right on in Searing Gorge.

the camp is not the one to the south of the pass from Bad Lands but to the north

I tried to do this quest earlier today. I picked the quest up at Iron Forge and went to Tanaris. However, when i got to Metzen and killed the kidnappers, i looked in the pouch for the dust and there was nothing in it. Has this happened to anyone else or is this a bug, or am i doing something wrong?

Edit: Went to Searing Gorge and it worked fine. Maybe it is as follows:

Alliance: Searing Gorge
Horde: Tanaris

well anyway, Searing gorge worked for me so i am happy now:)

I found Metzen in Searing Gorge, just a little ways down the road from the Stonewrought Gate in the far northeast of the map. He's in a little corral at a Dark Iron dwarf camp at an intersection in the road, southeast of the Gate, and surrounded by dwarves. After trying to solo with my Lvl 41 warlock and dying repeatedly, I just sent my voidwalker in to the middle of the dwarves and used Suffering to let him gather all the aggro. I then ran up to the reindeer, right-clicked on him to open the quest window, clicked on the sentence that says "Use the dust" (or something like that), and completed the quest! I died again soon after.

You don't need to click on the bag of dust in your inventory. In fact, it hangs around after you've finished the quest, making a nuisance of itself.

I was on my alliance rogue and i ran into Metzen at Tanaris in the pirate harbor. Hes guarded by a bunch of kidnappers there. I wasn't doing the quest though. so i didn't talk to him

im level 70 and it was SO easy i went to tanaris killed every thing in my way (well walked past most but i did kill some)

I was able to do this quest fairly easily, at level 35. It may require you to die once or twice, but its doable. Just come in the back way near the mountains, jump over the fence, and make a vee-line for 'ol metzen. All you have to do is talk to him, and click on the "sprinkle magic dust" option in the conversation. There is no cast time, so if your quick you can do it before you die. If not, die right on top of him, then walk back, rez right on top of him, and do the conversation quick.

For Tanarsis Spawn. Though the principle is the same.

Just found Metzen in Tanaris, near by 42-45 mobs. Two other players were already there, so I stealthed (I'm a druid) and got him. Reindeer dust automatically worked, didn't have to click anything. Did die though as I left.

Hmm I'm alliance and went to tanaris with my alt cause i donät have the other flightpath with that char... But I can't find Metzen on those coordinates. I ran around in all the houses and stuff in the compund and no reindear :(

I got the holly from a present under the Christmas tree in Iron Forge on Christmas day. I did two other seasonal quests (Stolen Winter veil treats and Treats for Greatfather Winter)earlier in the month and on Christmas day, there were 4 presents under the tree for me.

Across the compound from the main entrance is a small shed type stable. The reindeer is in the first stall. Behind the group around the campfire.

Okay, someone asked waaay back if you can keep the stuff that turns your mount into a reindeer. Yes you can, unless it specifies that you have to use it in x-amount of days. I have 3 holly (hollies?) i've kept from last year. I like turning my mount into a reindeer in march.

Solod with a 57 preist, losta mobs, when you pull his kidnapper you will get 3 at this level and 2-3 pathers during the fight, best to kill the pathers before the kidnapper pull, got hairy on the last kill - was oom and had already used a potion, last mob ran for it and i ran for metzen, got my clicking done while being jumped by i dont know how many, i was dead. Am now wondering how running in with my shield and a hot and just clicking on metzen would have turned out.

He is both at 67,34 in Searing Gorge, and at 73,47 in Tanaris. both "guards" are around lvl 45.

the unknown reward is 5 pieces of a treat that makes your mount look like a reindeer (use the item when mounted).

the reward is limited to five though, and dispells when unmounted. however, they can probably be used when you want (even after winter is over).

you can get more of this kind by /kiss to someone below a mistel (do it on another player and they'll get a nice spirit buff) and you will recieve a gift. this random gift can also have 5 of what this quest reward is, but then it has a "most be usable within 7 days" limit. so save your quest reward! :)

I just soloed this as a level 40 rogue. I died in the process, but here's how.

Using Distract, making sure all the guards around are affected, sneak up and talk to Metzen. The Distract should give you enough time to do all necessary clicking. Now, talking to Metzen brings you out of stealth, but if you're quick, you can start the process before you get killed.

Tanaris: Pirate camp along coast S of port. In the stables S of the main bonfire. As a rogue, sneak behind stables, "talk" to Metzen, complete quest, vanish. no combat required.

I just tried the tanaris rescue solo as a 47 hunter and boy is it hard! The co-ors listed here are correct for tanaris, but i would strongly advise any mid level 40's to go as a group. I was lucky as there was a 70 warrior there who killed most of the mobs for me. Defo not the easiest of quests. GL all

Things were easier in the Searing Gorge in 2004/5. Now the guards are practically sitting in each other's laps. Pulling one means they all come; I tried each one. They're probably all related but that's another story. You can't stealth through them because they're too close together. Probably the best course of action is to have someone else pull them, run in quickly and complete the quest.

Another alternative might be to pull the bunch, whack the leader a few times and then kite him far enough away from the others so that they evade, then kill your guy. Rinse and repeat as many times as necessary. But then since evade is a variable, you may get your target down to 0.5% health and have him evade back to his starting point. Or the one-by-one approach may take enough time for some or all of the guards to respawn, so you'll be kiting and killing trash mobs until the sun comes up. Oh joy.

And your reward for this is....some holly (and maybe some XP depending on your level). The Time-Constrained Player has two options: don't waste your time in the Searing Gorge unless you're looking for White Spider Meat, just go to the pirate town in Tanaris and get the job done there or skip this quest. Your time is worth more than multiple deaths for some holly that makes your mount look stupid and there are much more-interesting quests. How are you doing on the Fallen Hero of the Horde series? Much more interesting.

Just completed on SoD, tough, but probably worth the gold reward(2G 97S). I think the overall run combined with a few corpse runs took me 20-25 minutes. Essentially I just kept corpse running into the Southsea Camp until I could resurrect within dialogue of Metzen, ressed, talked to IMMEDIATELY(as you will get pounced upon by a lot of guards and die instantly) and sprinkled the dust over, all good.

Completed in SoD solo as a MAGE WITH BUBBLE! Ran through Loch Modan and then Badlands. In Badlands there's a Searing Gorge Pass at 4,60. You will die a lot and you will want to spirit resurrect to skip running all the way to the FP in Searing Gorge. Once you get to Metzen you will have to click through one dialogue prompt and then its completes the quest.

Don't be like me and try to right click the dust while you have Metzen as a target....
You need to talk to Metzen, to sprinkled him and complete the quest.

Metzen is in this stable surrounded out front of the building in Eastern Tanaris (pirate camp). As a rogue I was able to stealth right into where he was, get killed, rez on top of him, click through the one sentence dialogue, and complete the quest. Spirit rez'd and hearthed. Worth the 3G. No clue how you do this as any other class that can't stealth.

I just did this in SOD swiming all down from Theramore isle to the tanaris until behind the fence and died and death walk to the metzen .
if you are a fast clicker then u have no problems .cause as soon as you ressurect the guards will attack you and kill you in a blink .
I used Leatrix plus add on and activated automate gossip option and when i res all i do was clicking on metzen to interact. and you are done!

Do not listen to anyone saying to corpse res to the Searing Gorge Metzen, you will NOT be able to do this as anything but a Paladin with bubble. It is impossible, period. You literally die within a few frames of ressing, there is no chance you can talk to Metzen and click the dialog, not even with LeatrixPlus automating the dialog, you die before Metzens dialog window even opens.

Find Metzen the Reindeer. Use the notes provided to you for clues as to where he is being held.

When you find Metzen, have the Pouch of Reindeer Dust in your possession so you can sprinkle some of the dust on him; this should free Metzen from his bonds of captivity.

Return the Pouch of Reindeer Dust to Wulmort Jinglepocket in Ironforge once Metzen is freed.

Check out the ransom letters for clues, and sprinkle this reindeer dust on him - it will free him from any of his bonds!
