This is one of those escort quests, and it's a long one. To complicate matters, Gilthares likes to initiate combat.

Couple of things to note: 1) As with other escort quests, there are occasions where mobs don't attack. They'll just follow along behind for awhile. This can save you the trouble of killing them, however, if the escortee stops (such as for an 'ambush' or to fight a different mob), the ones following will attack. 2) There are no ambushes on this escort quest, there won't be a time where 2 or 3 come out of nowhere. However, you will need to clear away pretty much everything between Northwatch and Ratchet.

If someone has already started the quest, Gilthares will not be sitting in the bottom of the tower as he normally would be doing. If you want to accept this quest and he isn't there, you'll have to wait until the other party finishes the quest before he will respawn and allow you to accept it.

If you want to save yourself a lot of headache, clear out the area around the blacksmith before you accept the quest. He is very agressive, and the icky humans run away at 20% health.

Beware of any Alliance in the area, because they can kill the NPC. I was almost done with the quest (after already having to wait for respawn once after the guy pulled too many mobs) when a damn high-level Human Paladin shows up and one-shots Gilthares. I seriously wanted to punch him in the face IRL.

This quest is a pain. Once he's out of the hold, he has to walk through the pirates, but instead of just walking by them he charges every one. And he enjoys taking out entire camps. I was a 23 priest and he still died after aggroing a camp of 5 or 6 pirates. He's one sucky tank.

This quest takes atleast 20 minutes since he walks so slow the whole way and you have to kill like 50 pirates and atleast 15-20 theramore guys all for like 1850 exp. You could get much more exp faster just grinding or doing different quests.

He's in a tower in the Northwatch Hold on the ground floor. I believe it is the second tower, you can't miss him.

It's not like this is a hard quest or anything, but I've tried it twice and both times he's just mysteriously faded away. I don't think he's dying or anything either...
Any help?

i had the same problem. i made it through northwatch and most of the pirate camp and then he just faded away. i waited a bit but he didn't show up again. i also tried talking to Brightsun to complete the quest but that didn't work either. please don't tell me i have to go all the way back and start over. this quest was annoying.

I had the same problem today, which is weird since i have done this quest about five times on different characters and it has never bugged for me before. The spot where he disappeared was about halfway through the pirate camp, in front of the tent at about 63,46.

he mentions to stay close. there are a lot of escort quests out there that if you get to far away, they'll fail out. This is probably one of them.

I did this quest as a 20 druid with a 21 pally. All i did was heal while he aggroed and killed all the guys. Piece of cake.

The questgiver is in the tower where Cannoneer Whessan: 63,57 so do it together with "The Guns of Northwatch"
You'll see him as you enter in the tower.

To solo you need to be 22-23 with a pet, or bring 2-3 friends:
this guy aggro's everything that moves, pulls 4-5 mobs, ones you run to help he will attack a new one, and he is the worst tank ever: takes fistfight against 4-5 swords :-))
Than of course he is about to die, cries for help - and it is a long walk through the pirate camps.

So there is no bug, he just dies after getting beaten up by the 5 mobs he pulled on himself.
Keep an eye on him.

Ez as a lv20 Druid, don't let him get the arggo, just start clearing anything b4 he arggo, u can prob. pull 2~3 back n let him assist u. This will make ur life easier rather he arggo the whole grp.

lol this quest isn't THAT hard...failed it once cuz he died, didn't pay enough attn to his health. Second try (as a lvl 19 hunter with crappy gear), I just got proactive...I attacked mobs that I could see he would aggro BEFORE he aggroed them. In that way, he was just a bit of extra dps instead of me having to save his butt every fight.

It's a pain since he NEVER runs, even when danger is past, but it's easy...just strike before he does.

This quest is a pain. failed the first time because i wasn't paying attention and the second time a 32 gnome warrior and kills him! but then gos on to kill pirates... but anyway if he can hit something he will no matter what it is, so do a good job of protecting him or don't do the quest at all.

Quest is freaking easy! Me a 16 orc hunter along with a 17 orc hunter and a 17 priest did this quest so easy But we were lucky cuz all these level 16s+ were heading to the hold and were taking them out for us kinda funny when he escapes he goes SCREW U with his hands >=)

I've done this quest before a couple times (it's part of the guide I use) yet the Blood Elf isn't in the tower this time...go figure?

Dont bother wasting your time with this quest, I'm a 19 Druid, kept him alive out of the fort fine, got past a few camps, and then he decided to go and attack a mob of 3-5 pirates, and when I went to assist him, he ran away and agroed 4 more pirates making it impossible for me to heal him because of the agro on me, and the amount of DPS on him, its not worth the frustration or time, I can think of 10 other better things to do with my time other then this.

I wish Blizzard had a warning message if you were getting too far instead of just issuing a failure.

I did this with a 14 Druid last night in a group with 2 16 rogues and an 18 mage. We got through all of the mobs and all the way back to Ratchet. I ran ahead to scout - nobody left between us and victory. Suddenly, I got a failure, but the other three in my group all succeeded. After many deaths/group wipes throughout the Northwatch quest, I lost this final benefit of XP, equipment, and honor for taking a step or two out of his range while the rest of my party was right by his side. it totally sucked, and now I have to find a new group to go back to do it...again, or just give up.

The NPC that you're escorting, Gilthares Firebough, is REALLY #$%^ing creepy, you're escorting him and he will yell things such as "Help! Get this Southsea Cannoneer off me!" he'll then make a sharp turn and run straight into a camp of pirates and start attacking one. What a mental case!

i did this quest as a lvl 19 druid with only uncommon gear(not rare)i had to kill a whole camp so he wont aggro them. it is sort of easy for me, but it SOOOOOOOOOOOO long, like about almost 10 min. only reason i did this becuse of the Bukled Boots. (+ 4 stamina, + 2 intellect, and + 1 spirit. when i saw him he was in the tower, i found him easily.

I'm thinking he might be bugged. He definitely aggroed on the Theramore Marines and Preservers, and his health definitely drops. This is post patch 1.10, so maybe they tweaked some of his settings. Anyway I was a 21 lvl Priest, and seeing as how I just soloed the Guns of Northwatch, I thought I'd try to solo this one too. Things were going pretty well, until he aggroed 3 Marine in the middle of me fighting another Marine and Preserver. I was still hanging on, but when he got to around 25% health, I tried to heal him, only to discover that you CANT'T! Renew, Flash Heal, Heal all say "Invalid Target". Needless to say, he died and I failed the quest. Very lame! Guess I'll try again when I have a group or when I get higher.

This was one of those really annoying quests I should have just abandoned or something. Why do these 'people' beg us to help them escape their captors and then walk so stinking slow? Not only does he walk slow, but once you get out of the hold, he stops 'for a breath of fresh air' or some such bs! Then he strolls back to town, while you tap your foot or try to heckle him into going faster! I'd have liked to get my pet to chase him to town, but can't do that either.

just did this quest with a firend, he got 1500exp and was lvl13

NOT worth it for a 20min eskort q
edit: even had to do it twice :p since he ran away the first time and lost the quest like 20yards from ratchet

Gilthares spawns in the ground level of the first tower...it's obvious where, as his restraining chains and a pile of straw are laying on the ground in a recess. If a group is doing the qwest I highly advise sharing it immediately upon triggering it.
No one in my full group completed the quest; all of us were completing the Guns of Northwatch quest, upon arrival at the quest giver in Ratchet, <that> quest completed but not the escort quest. (Gilthares despawned) I repeated the escort quest later on and it concluded properly for 2050 exp (as I recall) at level 22..so the 4950 exp listed is highly overrated.
Last but not least >YES< Gilthares attacks any soldier, any pirate, that gets within range, no matter how many there are. He holds his own in combat, but clear the path out as best you can.

Nothing will aggro on Gilthares and he doesn't aggro on the Theramore humans, but he will aggro on the pirates. You do NOT need to clear his path out of the keep, only your own path so that you can get out. Stay relatively close to him at all times, we had a couple in our group fail because they were too far ahead clearing pirates. Success is not based on the group though, so individual members of the group can fail and the rest can still succeed.

Another easy quest here. I cleared my way out and Firebough attacked everything I attacked. I thought we was going to die but he seemed tough. I was thinking I needed to break out the first aid but he didn't lose any health at all. Clearing the path was easy and I still had time to loot each mob I/we killed. Kinda funny the way this one was done. He walks slow as hell then when I attacked a mob with my pet he's lighting fast. Once the mob drops he runs back to his spot where he started running from and then starts walking at a slow pace again.

I have done this quest in beta, tried it now, but he wont start to walk. oO
i logged out and restarted the quest several times but nothing works.

Don't start, I say - DON'T start this quest until You finish first the one with the towers and captain.
This is VERY long escort, he slowly walks ALL the way to Ratchet. While fighting lvl 17 Marines seems reasonable (area where You find him), fighting lvl 13 Freebooty pirates isn't .
That's damn too long quest with crap rewards.

I believe NPC spawn timer is about 18 minutes and quest takes about 12 minutes.

Atleast for me, the previous group accepted the quest at 13:42:15 ST, we accepted the quest at 15:00:03 (waited a bit for everyone to accept) and we completed the quest at 14:12:15. Spawn timer might be effected from the previous group's speed.

I believe only one person needs to get the quest, I didn't accept the quest but when someone in our group accepted it and started it a pop-up came for me and I got the quest from that pop-up. However, some other guy who accepted the quest from the NPC was not able to give in, only the guy who started the quest (I mean the walk) and the people who accepted the quest from from the pop-up was able to turn in. This might be a bug tho.

While you can get a group for this to make it easier, I figured a way to solo it very easily on my level 22 warlock. Basically follow the NPC and let him decide who to attack, let him pull, then immediately take aggro off of him. This worked flawlessly all the way through. The hardest part was the beginning with the blacksmith and gate. Once you get past the gate it is very easy the rest of the way but it will take awhile to finish. It might have been easier for me because I could just have my voidwalker just tank for him, so your mileage may vary. Just don't let him have any aggro so he doesn't take damage.

Another very slow walking escort quest. Love the line though- as you finally finish the pirate coast area he says "Almost back to Ratchet! Let's keep up the pace".

This has got to be the longest escort quest in the game. Make sure you have at least a half-hour to kill. (Bad pun, but I had to say it.)

Finish The Guns of Northwatch before starting this! It's a very long quest and you will have to go all the way back from Ratchet to finish the other one.

It respawned 18 minutes, 30 seconds after the previous group accepted it.

I'm not sure why, I didn't stray too far from him and I was the one to accept the quest but I got zero credit for escorting him all the way, the other 4 in my party got credit.

I can't believe you got past the guards. These zealots from Theramore are out of their minds. They sank our ship and imprisoned me, the only survivor. I was called an enemy and threat to the Alliance.

Me! A threat to their great sham of an Alliance? I was a deckhand on a moonshine transport between Ratchet and Booty Bay.
