The essences are found off of ghosts inside The Master's Cellar. There are two entrances to the cellar, both are found right next to eachother at (48, 78).

It's got a GOOD droprate as compared to the previous post. As long as you kill the right ones. The cave part of the cellar has the easiest accessible mobs, but make sure you do the quest early since the place gets kinda swamped after some time.

Not sure if it was just luck or what, but I experienced a 100% drop rate from the Unliving Caretakers. Shades dropped too, but less frequently. I got most of mine form Caretakers, and it didn't take that long.

This is quite a low drop rate, it took me about 20-30 minutes to get all 10 essences, but still, each mob drops 5-25 silver and a very high chance for Netherweave cloth, not to mention the 12g you get for completing the quest, so definetly worth the trouble.

caretakers seem to have a perfect drop rate... info on the drop rates of essences from wowhead supports this:

Caretakers have over 50% drop rate -- this is including all the people farming these guys for cloth/money and otherwise not on the quest

the others are probably close to a 1-in-3 drop rate

Thank God for wowhead. The quest log says nothing about going down into the Master's Cellar for this quest, merely the "outside of Karazhan." Very misleading description. I killed about 20 of the unliving residents with 0 drops before I decided to check things out here.

Melee people, be careful not to get too many adds here - the Caretakers use a Debilitating Strike which reduces all physical damage you do by 75%, and they use it frequently. If you're unlucky it'll take more than twice as long to kill each enemy, meaning a group of 3 effectively turns as challenging as a group of five or so normally.

(Yes, I found out the hard way >_>)

It took my entire party about 20 minutes to get all of our dust... we combined this of course with the other part of the first link in the chain. Not difficult at all. I would suggest taking a party because you can run through the area faster and down enemies quicker.

Make sure you go down in the cellar, i tryed just killing the ghosts up around the quest giver but i didnt get any drops....

Do not do what i do and kill about 7 of the ghosts outside. They do not drop the Ghostly Essence, or at least they didn't drop them to me.
Only the ghosts Underground ( The Master's Celler ) drop the Ghostly essence.

Confirmed:

Wailing Spectre will also drop the essence. I just had 2 drop for me while in the celler.

Edit - Restless Shade will also drop the essence though it a very low rate drop.

for me they dropped off the ghostly Humanoids, not the Spectral type mobs

ive killed about 30 with only one drop :(

luckily theres usually a lot of people outside of kara in case i aggro..but still, an awful, awful drop rate

ill have to take the advice on the caretakers, ive heard that more people get drops in the caves than above ground

Enter the Master's Cellar at 48, 78.

You will find plenty of ghosts there that drop the essence.

This quest is a nightmare if your a caster, nearly all the mobs have counter spell or silence. If your a caster i suggest bringing along a melee friend

The ones who drop this most of the times is "Unliving Caretaker"

If you click on the item link in the quest description above, it tells you who drops them. However, the droprate, for me and most people it seems, is shockingly low. Just go slaying your way through the cellars until you get the ten you need.

Like Arcane Disturbances, this quest can be attained at level 68. I've done the chain through to the Shadow Labyrinth part at 68, and I intend to do the SL and SV parts at 69 so that all I have to do at 70 is Arcatraz and then BM in order to get keyed.

I really need some help here. This is my third day trying to do this quest and I have not gotten one single drop. I haven't been able to find the master 's cellar or any caretakers. The mobs outside don't seem to want to drop either.

Drop rate for me was like 60% inside the cave.

I got almost 100% drop rate from the Unliving Caretakers in the Masters Cellar.

(Note: This is how I did it doesn't mean it works for everyone)

Go from the quest giver along the wall you'll pass about 1 or 2 buildings kill 1 ghost using Alt to see them it should be by what looks like an Inn then you'll see a flight of steps to your right that lead down you'll want to go down there. Be patient if not every mob drops the essence mine was 50% for some and the rest 100%. None of the essence dropped from any of the mobs outside.

Violet Eye +250 Rep
11 gold 99 silver <--- (I was level 70)

Full Questline to get The Master's Key:
Begin in Karazhan Entrance /way 47,0, 75,6

1. Arcane Disturbances.
/way 48,6, 78,8 Entrance to Underground Well Reading
/way 53,2, 90,1 Underground Well Reading
/way 47,7, 78,3 Entrance to Underground Pond Reading
/way 42,8, 78,5 Underground Pond Reading

Use Violet Scrying Crystal in your bag to Reading.

2. Restless Activity. Go to /way 48,6, 78,9 Well Cave Entrance

3. Contact from Dalaran.
Grab the Flight Master to Southshore, Hillsbrad.
In Hillsbrad Foothills go to 38,8, 24,6 and follow the path to Alterac Mountains
Return the quest at /way Alterac Mountains 15,6, 54,6

4. Khadgar. Deliver Alturus's Report to Khadgar in Shattrath City.

5. Entry Into Karazhan.
First Key Fragment drop from First Fragment Guardian located near the Last Boss in Shadow Labyrinth.
First Fragment Guardian spawn after interact with Arcane Container.
To access the Shadow Labyrinth needs someone with Shadow Labyrinth Key to open the Dungeon Gate.
Shadow Labyrinth Key drop from The Talon King's Coffer located near Talon King Ikiss the last boss in Sethekks Halls.

6. The Second and Third Fragments.

Second Key Fragment drop from Second Fragment Guardian. This guy appear after interact with Arcane Container in The Steamvault.
Arcane Container is located before the first boss inside the water. After enter the dungeon go straight until reach the water.

Third Key Fragment drop from Third Fragment Guardian. This guy appear after interact with Arcane Container in The Arcatraz.
To enter into The Arcatraz you need someone with Key to the Arcatraz or a rogue with lockpick on the group.
Arcane Container is located on the room with Dark Elementals (right side), after the first boss.

7. The Master's Touch.
Go into The Black Morass Dungeon (Normal or Heroic) /way 57,5, 62,7 Entrance
Full run the dungeon (all 18 Time Rifs).
After kill the final boss return quest to Medivh.

8. Return to Khadgar. Return to Khadgar in Shattrath City and show him the Master's Key. Rewards: The Master's Key.
