This set is for feral spec druids, not for rogues. Pretty high amount of stamina, and defense, a great druid tank set.
Druids got a lot more armor than warriors, but they lack at defense. I think Blizzard made this set so the druids could get some + defense rating as well.

Such a nice druid tanking gear. Haven't played tBC beta myself, but I heard there is about 450% armor contribution and 40% health (not the regulaty 1200) in bear form.
It looks that Blizz decided to make a druid not the healer but a typical hybrid, that depend on the build you can be either a tank, dmg dealer or healer.

This multiple funcionality might be a great thing making druid one of the most interesting class to play, especially when there are 5-10 man instance coming, and there won't be - as we are used to - 40 players where there'll be lots of healers/tanks or damagers, so druids won't be just 'healbots' but there will have to play at least 2 roles :(for example main healer and offtank the same time)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you do NOT have to be a LW'er to equip this, correct? You just wont receive the set bonus of +20 Str?

Because I just couldn't wrassle up enough gem slots in my tanking gear to make it worth while. But now with this set, shouldn't be a problem.

As a druid, I would most definitely fill every slot of this set with Solid Star of Elunes https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=24033. Putting the set at 227 Stam. Topped with a HP chest enchant, Kit on gloves and enchant on leggings, you're looking at one hell of a pin cushion. Don't waste your slots with +Def, you're not killing a druid with 20k+ health. Not anytime soon anyway.

This whole set is of course solid for any bear tank starting early raids/heroics up until it can be replaced with feral tier gear.

However it's worth noting that the stats on the sets can be somewhat misleading. Besides stamina and armor which are of course staple stats for any tanking, three other stats appear on the set:

Defense Rating
While this stat certainly does work for bear tanks, and is widely featured on bear tanking items (e.g. Earthwarden), it is actually not the most ideal stat for them at all.

Defense rating decreases your attacker's chance to hit and crit you - which is good. It also increases at an equal rate your chance to dodge, block, and parry. Druids can neither block and parry, unlike warriors and paladins. Since the stat gives such effective avoidance for anyone who can both block and parry, it must be balanced accordingly in itemization relative to other stats. For a level 70, 60 defense rating increases the chance of all the above by 1%.

Resilience however, which so many players brand as "pvp-only", gives 1% crit immunity for only 39.4 rating. Since 1 resilience rating = 1 defense rating when it comes to itemization (compare for example Thick Dawnstone and Mystic Dawnstone), it is more effective to "shop" for resilience than defense in order to become crit immune.

So what about the -1% hit and +1% dodge (read: +2% avoidance) that 60 defense rating would also buy you? For avoidance bear tanks should always go for agility, where 14.7 agi gives +1% dodge, while also increasing +crit%. In theory, after the 39.4 resilience for 1% crit immunity, you could get 29.4 agility for +2% dodge and +1.18% crit, for a slightly higher cost in item budget.

The reduction to periodic damage from resilience is really just gravy but nice nonetheless and incidentally useful for druid tanks who already have problems with that sort of damage.

In other words, if you need more crit immunity and have the choice of either defense or resilience, always go for the resilience. For avoidance in general druids are best off stacking agility.

Please don't get me wrong though: Earthwarden is an awesome feral tanking weapon, regardless of defense vs resilience.

Dodge Rating
To get +1% dodge takes 18.92 dodge rating for any class at level 70. Druids get the same amount of dodge with 14.7 agility which also gives +0.59% crit. Since 1 dodge rating = 1 agility in item budget, dodge rating is clearly inferior in every way to druids.

As for the set bonus on this set, it may occasionally suit a druid just as well to use the right gems, but in any case that little bit of dodge rating really has very low value to us.

Strength
Generally not a priority stat for druid tanks although it should not be regarded as useless. Bears with their 25%+ crit get a lot more threat out of attack power than warrior tanks with 12% crit.

Excellent tanking set for 70 druids who will be tanking bosses in the lvl70 instances. It lets you stack your Defense and Stamina into these items, and gives you a lot more freedom in your other slots.

Already crafted this 3 times for other druids.

This set is THE best one for druid tanks. Druid tanks are better than wars, even after the nerf. This set allows for an unreal amount of stamina, and the sockets are perfect.

Yes druids dont get the complete defense, but it is enough.

Druid is going to easily have at a MINIMUM 4k more hp, and especially for certain boss fights that is a must.

Maiden in karazhan comes to mind. You can either have a druid tank with massive hp, or be forced to have 2 druids healing spamming HoT's.

A warrior tanking would need 2 druids in good healing gear to even keep him alive through the repetence. A druid would be able to survive with another druids hots.

youre obviously going to have a priest for shields and renews and a shadowpriest if you wanted even more.

There are plenty of guilds that do not even utilize a warrior for tank.

Obviously Warriors get a lot more out of defense then Druids...

However, if you spec your druid with Survival of the Fittest 3/3 and obtain 65 extra defense, you will in essence become uncritable.

Besides the very minimum chance you can achieve, this makes a druid tank even more viable. However you can reach this goal with resilience gear as well. Since druids do still get dodge from defense, defense is a better stats then resilience.

This set is a very nice set, and indeed I use this. I as a leather worker get the 30 str bonus and smacked all 12 stamina gems in there.

Not necessarily all gem bonuses are useful though, as in my case I had so much defense I dropped the defense gems for more stamina.. as the dodge rating is worth a lot less to me then stamina.

I, with mostly BoE and Quest Gear, have obtained:

415 Defense (Uncritable)
13k Health (Unbuffed)
20k Armor
26.5% Dodge

The legs alone, with 3 12 stamina gems and a 30 stamina/10 agil leg enchant, provide over 100 stamina!

This definitely will help create a more viable tank out of the druid. However, this doesn't make the druid the "best" tank. It just means that without difficulty a druid can reach stats a warrior would only dream of.

Druids are better for really high damage hits, as they have a higher pool and more stable damage mitigation. I've seen a warrior tanking Gruul's lair die quite quickly because of not parrying/blocking/dodging any attacks that hit him in quick succession. Meanwhile a druid can take a hit and the healers can have enough time to cast big heals.

To wrap this up, if your a druid tank this is a very nice start set. Likely you will want to throw the green stamina and defense rating gems, in their corresponding slots, until you get more defense then you need and can replace the defense rating gems with more stamina.

If your looking for stats, likely what you will want above all other stats are.

Defense (Until 415) > Armor (Until 35.8k .. lol) > Stamina > Agility > Dodge > Hit/Crit

The following comes from the release notes found at:

"Heavy Clefthoof Boots", "Heavy Clefthoof Leggings",and "Heavy Clefthoof Vest" have had their armor increased at the expense of some stamina and defense rating.

I am not sure exactly how much stamina and defense will be lost, but as a druid tank, I love my armor! Will have to wait and see exactly what is meant when they say "at the expense of."

Picked up skinning on my 62 druid. Spent a day getting it up to 300. Spent a day getting it to 330. By this time I was 64 just from grinding beasts to level skinning. Headed to Nagrand and farmed Clefthoofs from 64-65. 3 days later and a lot of frustration from all the competition, I have all the leather I need. Used my 70 lock to farm the rest of the mats and I have the set sitting in my bank waiting on me to hit 70 so can now spend 66-70 getting rep with CE! Very easy to do and the +20 str is not really worth getting LW up to 375...
