I managed to get way over 200 of these by the time i was in Ungoro (all quests done)
I took half of what i saw, most i just ran by... tho every mob drops it...

I tend to make a "soil run" about once every few weeks. I collect a stack of 100 Un'Goro soil (plus power crystals and bloodpetal sprouts while I'm at it). It takes some time to get the 100 soil, but it is worth it in my opinion. The repeatable morrowgrain quest (to be handed in in Thunder Bluff and Darnassus, respectively) is very nice indeed, as are the buffs you can get from the power crystals.

Yes, mobs do drop the soil, but mostly only one at a time, while the piles of dirt yield one to four each.

Usually I ride between piles without actively engaging mobs, but if one does aggro, I kill it and gladly take its soil if it drops any.
The one exception to my "no active engagement" rule are Bloodpetals, because they also drop Savage Fronds, which are nice for Argent Dawn rep.

Ya the quest Un'Goro Soil starts in Darrnassas by the on the top of the druid trainers tower the guy up there will give you a quest and after it is done you can repeat it thus geting crap loads of rep if you get alot of soil so save up

You can find the soil in darker areas on the ground, almost all over (at least) the east half of the crater.. You can also get them as drop from, for example, raptors..

But when you've done the q I doubt you have need for the items..
They are, after all, sorted as:
"Item Class > Miscellaneous > Junk"

Just a little add to this previous statement..
The q you get from the Druid in Darnassus (Morrowgrain research) is repeateble you gain rep. by turning in Morrowgrain.. And also, as a herbalist you should have use for these.. 2x + 1x = 1x (used with a that you get in one of the q:s) The casings contains random herbs..=)

OK, if you want not only the Un'Goro Soil but also some useful items (like herbs) you can kill mobs in un'goro crater. Bloodpedals seem to have the best drop ratio.

But, if you just want the Soil, I suggest the Dirt Piles. I've posted a long list of coords in the Un'Goro Dirt Pile page. With just a roundtrip visit of the coords you'll get more than 50 Soil.

These could repawn in different areas. I found them around the bases of the very large tress, about every 3rd tree offered the dark brown pile at its base.

If you are looking to farm these from the Un'Goro Soil.

Turn "Ground Clutter" to 1 in Settings->Graphics
It removes the clutter and foliage so that you can spot it from a distance

If you want to find these fast I suggest going to the Volcano in the middle of Un'Goro and loot the Piles of dirt, they drop 1-4 each and there's plenty of piles on the Volcano
