This is an excellent weapon for hunters new to level 60, or those unable to obtain the HWL/GM weapons, or unable to raid endgame instances. It is comparable to the bloodseeker (A quest reward from the Alterac Valley battleground). Before blizzard normalized the attack speed damage bonus on ranged weapons, the slow speed of this gun added to the fun. It was possible to pull off many 2.5k crits off with this xbow. It is still a very high dps weapon, and a good reason to take the Ice-barbed spear over the bloodseeker for a quest reward. This weapon is also good for the tanks in the guild, because it does have 9 stamina, and is fairly easy to obtain

I remember, way back before hunter normalization, when this was the best weapon until Rhok. Thing would hit like a Mack truck. *sigh* Oh well. Guess they gave us big red kitty to help ease the pain...

Fast weapons are better for pvp because they are better at interupting casters. The exceptions are for scatter shot, aimed shot, and multishot. Scatter shot does 50% weapon damage, which benefits from slow, hard hitting bows. Aimed shot does weapon damage plus 600 (at highest rank) which also benefits from a hard hitting weapon. The down side to this is that you will have a 6.3 second wind-up. This won't be too much of a problem in a 1 v1 sitution where you can get a freeze trap going on. Also good as an opener if your opponent doesn't know you are there yet. Multishot will take up an autoshot slot but with a hard hitting bow it will do maximum damage. The best way to take advantage of all of this is with macros. Have your scatter shot, aimed shot and multishot macros call out your slow bow, then have autoshot, serpent sting, viper sting, arcane shot and scorpid sting macros that call out your fast bow.

I have a hurricane sitting in my bank waiting for me at level 48 with a +7 scope. When I'm high enough to do strath I'm gonna grab a Carapace Spine Bow to use with those macros. Ofcourse that will also have a +7 scope on it :)

As a hunter useing bows exclusively I had to be convinced to use this, but eventually I got it and ranked up crossbow. Haven't looked back, I regularly top the damage tables and it's nice for ammo conservation. The only major problem with it in instances is that I keep pulling aggro off the MT or pulling aggro off whoever is tanking.
Aimed shots critting for as high as 2600 on Scholomance adepts (2900 on a rat, woot) or Multi-shot with each arrow hitting for 1500 on a crit is truly scary. Also as has been mentioned the ammo consevation. I've had almost every non-epic bow and crossbow in the game. This is still what I return to for just damage. Ancient Bone bow is almost as good, but this thing just for the massive crits is truly spectacular. A trade off of 7 agi for 7 stam is worth it.
To all you other people wanting this for pulling, I will gladly do Strat runs to get you this bow. It deserves more respect and I've been shot with this in PvP by a rogue, he critted me for 600. Scared the crap outta me, hehe. Then he ganked me 'cos I was killing a mage, but the point is this bow works for everyone and is easy to get.

i bought DHC off AH to replace this but my damage with hawk active is slightly less, and i tested it in AB and i dont seem to crit as high or as much with aimed shot, why does a slower attack speed mean less/lower crits if someone could explain this i would be very grateful as it cost a fair whack of gold!

I got it last 3 days ago
-he gave me alot improvement from my previous 30 dps +4 fire damage gun.

using 30.1 dps gun 2.30 Im hitting 203 damage using my attacks...aimed is 1117

but using this bow gives me all 348 every attack and alot of 990 and sometime 1178 critical for normal shot...

aimed shot hits them 2148..

it kills much faster that fast range weapon.

the only things matter is u need alot of mana to cover up ur slow DPS

its really good cause its speed for crit but i dont like how its look like and i think Anciect bone bow looks better and add 11 agi.

If you are playing with a PvP hunter who has foolishly chosen to get an Ice Barbed Spear, then DO NOT roll against them. This weapon is easily as good, if not better, than Rhok'delar for PvP. Don't believe me, then look at my post on the page for the Bloodseeker. The slow weapons, while had been changed by blizzard in a patch, still do insane amounts of damage compared to fast weapons. Anyway.. I know it's screwy, but it's the truth.

For PvP I think CSX is better than bloodseeker, with bloodseeker equiped I have 5 more max damage. However, with CSX equiped I have 9 stamina more, worth the trade-off imo. And saying that hunters shouldn't be hit is utter bull#$%^, if you want even a slight chance versus shadow priests, locks and mages you'll need health, alot of it.

With the new 2.0 patch they have seriously upgraded the dps on this crossbow, i had it equipped at patch time and now the dps says it is 39.8 or something very close to that.

I got it on my first strat run too at lvl 57 its not a bad bow :)

It does deal some impressive damaage but the weapon speed drives me to tears! It is as many said a bit bland looking graphically and I'm aiming at replacing it with Eaglehorn Long bow or even an Ancient bow bone. Just prefer their wpn speed over this x-bow :)

It was a nice replacement for my trusty Verdant keepers that I had at 49 from maraudon though :D

I picked this beauty up today in Scholo. It was my first time there, and somehow I won the roll on this amazing crossbow. I'm a rogue, so the stats and speed are absolutely perfect. First truly endgame piece of equiptment for me. I wish they could get some cool skins though for crossbows. This thing looks just like any other old crossbow.

I grabbed one tonight, good rogue stats for someone who is to busy leading raids to get gorewood. Training xbows up from 1 sucks a bit. Was dealing some huge damage in PvP with this thing.

I'm a hunter and I was lucky enough to get his xbow on my very first Strath run ever. Ditched my old Verdent Keepers Aim which served me well. My only complaint about this xbow is that it possibly the most boring looking wepon you could ever get. On the upside not to many hunters (on my server at least) use xbows so using this one kinda sets me apart.

I was only hunter in Strat Baron run... and a rogue roll need on this one! now why did he need those 4 agility so bad that he would rather have those 4 "blue" agility than 7 of those "green" agilitys!

I would have gladly given him the money to buy one of those green bows with agi.

If that's not ninja-looting then I will constantly roll need on every leather armor dropping, 'cause I CAN use it (what the rogue said)

As a tank, i use this for pulling. During the next upcomming fight, you can expect the total sum of dammage i do on that same mob not to exceed that first shot.

I too got this tonight and I'm a hunter. I have about 121 dps, even with the 3.30 speed decrease, and that's without a scope and wearing sub-par agil gear. I regularly hit about 240 a shot.

I got this weapon first and about a week later t´he howitzer dropped. As a dwarf I prefer the howitzer due to the racial bonus and the bang ;)
I'm only thinking about using the crossbow for pvp, where I'm heading for crits more than in instances.

I wan't this bad for my opener. It's just too slow for my tastes though. Pick this up and pray to get the Anciet bone bow. Use this for opening and switch to the bone bow for the main event for that nice constant damage.

Rogues . . . please I beg of all of you . . . yes rogues get MUCH better bonuses from agi. But on ranged weaps for us agi is a distant 3rd. 1st is Dps and second is speed (which is all preference some like slower big damage others like emptying a quiver) If there's a hunter in your group/raid that needs a bow or xbow let them roll. Don't just drool on stats cause there are definately green bows with much better stats than this.

Second note . . . if I did my calculations right . . . when 1.7 goes live and imp AotH proc gives a 30% speed boost this bows speed drops to about 2.3 then stack rapid fire and you could jump to about 1.5 I'd hate to imagine that speed with this equipped and wearing crit gear.

got this few days ago. first i felt i bit naked since i've been always using guns. compared to my old howitzer this baby kicksass. same DPS but hella slow, so expect nice <2000 crits :)

bow puts out some sick PvP aimed shot crits, but in PvE Ancient Bone Bow is way better im currently trying to top my record of 2470 crit followed immediately by my auto shot for 900

60 Hunter here. Was first Horde on the Stormscale server to get this Xbow. I've since run Strat a few times and this seems to be a rather rare drop. Damage wise is as good as the DHC but hella slow. This massacres people in group PvP and is ridiculously better than Gorewood.

In PvE and Raid leading, Gorewood and this match up pretty evenly. The important stats are near the same (the +str isn't an issue at all really) and it makes much better use of multishot and aimed shot. The Gorewood on the other hand crits more due to the speed.
