Basically to Prospect this ore, you get ~15% chance of getting a blue, and then a 85% chance to get 0, 1, or 2 green gems. Occasionally you will get a blue and green gems, but that's quite rare. The powder should also not be vendored as it is a reagent for making Mercurial Adamantite.

In contrast, fel iron ore gives you the same prospecting rate to get green gems, but less than half the chance to get blue gems. That said, if you can buy fel iron ore for less than half of what adamantite ore cost, then you shoul be ahead gold-wise by prospecting that.

Patch 2.1.X changed the drop rates of blue gems, it is now 16.2% (instead of 15%) to get a blue gem. Previously, you would also have a chance to get zero gems in a prospect, that is now not the case, so the "overall" chance to get green gems has increased around 10%, and the chance to get blue gems has increased by 1.2%.

Can someone explain how Adamantite Ore can be mined from Ogres & Basalisks? You cant even mine the rock elementals.
The drops are wrong too. You cant loot the Withered Corpses in Netherstorm, they turn into the fleshfiends if you get close or attack them.
Hell, I wouldnt mind if you could get the ore from so many things. Means I could use Adamantite Shells more often.

drop rate is now between 20-25% for blues. i get a blue just about every stack of ada ore now.
i prospected 40 or so stacks today. i got about 38(i think) blue gems.
got unlucky for part and went 6 stacks with no blue gem then immediately after i got 6 in a row. took a SS of it even. its very streaky

The actual prospecting rate is more than 18% now.

If you total up all the blue gems, and divide it by the total as of 9/17/07 these are the numbers from Wowhead itself:

If the Wowhead data hasn't been reset with the 2.1.x patch then the actual prospecting rate might is even greater than this since it will average with old data that was at 15%.

You shouldn't sell these. Get a jewelcrafter friend and let him/her prospect them all for you. From my experience, you will always get one rare gem out of a stack of Adamantite Ore... you will also get 4 powders for making Mercurial Adamantite. Let your friend craft that rare gem if he/she is able(which will sell even more), if not, the gem itself will still worth a hell lot. Turn all the powders into Mercurial Adamantite(which also worth alot)... Primal Earth worth almost nothing.(and extremely easy to obtain as a miner... I didn't farm any, yet I have 3 stack of Primal Earth sitting in my bank eating dust)

After doing that, you should be able to turn a stack of Adamantite Ore(20g) into rare gems and Mercurial Adamantite worth at least 50g.(you get loads of small uncommon gems too~)

Note: This method only works on certain servers... such as mine, in which a stack of Adamantite worth only 15g and any rare gem other than Talasite(which worth 30g) will worth over 40g.... crafted ones all worth over 50g. Primal Earth worth 3g and Mercurial Adamantite worth 20g.

Prospecting is one of the best and easiest ways to make gold, depending on your servers economy.

Simply hit 350 Jewelcrafting, get a few "in demand" gems, and buy up all the Adamantite Ore you can find. Do not buy recipes for gems that aren't good for a class, eg don't buy recipes for gems like + to spirit...
Undercut everyone. Learn what your gem prices are, and what you need to sell at in order to profit.

Here's an average day's (this morning, actually) run from prospecting for me.

Purchased:

The lowest return I usually hit is 140%, which is still pretty good profit for how little time this takes. On good days (I've managed to get 4x living rubies from a single stack!), I hit as high as 200%-250%

Here's my take on those numbers, regarding probability. I know from personal experience that these are not dependent events or, at least, it's not a rule set in stone that only one blue gem can drop from a single Prospect. I've seen a Talasite and Living Ruby come from a single 5-stack of Adamantite Ore (not mine unfortunately), which leads me to believe that these are independent events.

Using your table above for drop counts of each blue gem from the total prospecting seen, you can work out individual probabilities for each blue gem:

Talasite - 7979/245820 ~= 0.0324587
Dawnstone - 7717/245820 ~= 0.0313928
Noble Topaz - 7668/245820 ~= 0.0311935
Living Ruby - 7490/245820 ~= 0.0304694
Star of Elune - 7392/245820 ~= 0.0300707
Nightseye - 7376/245820 ~= 0.0300056

The chance of any single one of these not dropping is then one minus that respective probability:

Chance of Talasite NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0324587 = 0.967541
Chance of Dawnstone NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0313928 = 0.968607
Chance of Noble Topaz NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0311935 = 0.968806
Chance of Living Ruby NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0304694 = 0.969530
Chance of Star of Elune NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0300707 = 0.969929
Chance of Nightseye NOT dropping ~= 1 - 0.0300056 = 0.969994

Then the aggregate chance that no blue gems will drop is the product of the above numbers, or approximately 0.828180.

The chance that any blue gems will drop is then one minus the probability that none will drop, or

1 - 0.828180 = 0.171819

This is very close to the 18% you stated but not quite the same thing.

Edit: Also, please note that this number represents the probability that one or more blue gems will be prospected from a given 5-stack of Adamantite Ore. Combined with the average value of uncut blue gems on your server, you can use this to find the expected minimum value of a stack of Adamantite Ore.

For example, with Gary13579's list of prices below, the expected minimum value of a 20 stack of Adamantite Ore would be

4*0.171819*(10+70+40+30+30+40)/6 ~= 25.20g

Remember that, for Blacksmithers/Engineers/Jewlcrafters buying ore on the auction house, it takes TWO ores to make ONE bar. Make sure the ore you are buying is at least half the price of the bars on the AH (if you do plan using them for your profession), or you're getting ripped-off. Generally you wont find them at half price becuase they can be prospected, but sometimes you can find cheap ore.

I farm 2 hours every day Adamantite Ore x50 stacks i sell this in ah 28-32g and i take the epic flying mount in 1week

i cruise around blades edge and netherstorm when farming, the areas that are unreachable in blades without a flying mount are usually good for a rich vein

The best place, in my opinion, is Nagrand. Granted, I don't have much experience mining anywhere other than here and hellfire, but I have found that if you determine a route to patrol and just circle that area, you will find about 120 ores an hour (mix of fel iron, adamantite, khorium). Oh, that is with epic mount of course.

is it just me, or anybody else noticed that rich adamantite mines spawn much much less after 2.1 patch? i went 3-4 full rounds in blade's edge and only found 1(!) rich adamantite deposite.
before patch there were at least 2 in each round

I agree... it seems more scarce... I patrol the same areas in Nagrand as I did before the patch and am coming up very short. They must have nerfed the spawns. :(

Bought 40 ores off the AH at 25g a stack, had the prospected and came away with 1 Living Ruby and 2 Nighteyes, not to mention a fistful of Greens i gave to the JC as a thankyou.
My server the price of those gems uncut is 40g each on the AH.
Good profit margin ^^

Firstly I concur that Nagrand is the best place to get adamanatite ore as the routing by flying mount is far more convenient than the other zones. Zangarmarsh is also convenient but not as rich. Blades Edge is a pain given the layout and the spiked mountains.

As for the comment about Gatherer. There is a downloadable database you can use with Gatherer posted along with the Gatherer add on.

After prospecting over 5000 stacks of Adamantite Ore between Oct 2007 and Mar 2008, I can say with confidence that it produces 1 rare gem for roughly every 4.46 prospects. (22%)

With the release of the new patch, 2.4, Quel'Danas is available for play, and it has become the best place to mine. The respawn times are so quick that they are respawned by the time I circle the map. There have been no fel iron, only adamantite, rich adamantite, and khorium. I've found khorium multiple times. This is THE best place to mine, IMO.

If you get Cartographer Mining and Cartographer Routes, you can make a route that goes to every mining node that you want. Very good IMO.
