These quest objects severely confused me. Most of the time the larva would "split open" on me, despite my best efforts. The molting doesn't seem to be timed, as the larva would molt at different times no matter what my DPS was.

So then I thought it was based on a percentage of hitpoints... but that proved wrong as sometimes the larva would molt at 50% and other times they wouldn't molt at all (even if I let them live for upwards of one minute).

Either way, I collected just as many cocoons from split larva as I did from unsplit larva... so don't worry about what the quest tells you, just kill them and expect a fairly low drop rate.

The drop rate for these is crap, and as pointed out, the larva quite frequently spawn a Silkwing moth as well. Plus the larvas themselves are quite tough little buggers.

As the quest doesn't lead on to anything else, and the reward is just some gold, I quickly abandoned this quest when it became clear that it's not worth the hassle. Do it if you've got nothing better to do (or you want the xp), otherwise, don't bother.

I was also very dissapointed with this quest and decided to let it down and do soft wings first. After I completed it and give it in (the softest wings) I decided to give it a second try. The drop rate for silkwood cocoon was increased to 100%. I still need a confirmation about that.

i was doing both quests at the same time and i had like 11 wings and 6 cocoons, after i finished the wings i delivered it at once to see if anor's comment was right, it may not increase the drop rate at 100% but i got them on the 2nd and 3rd larva i killed, but maybe it's because i only had 2 left.
but if you're gonna do these quests make sure you do them at the same time.
and as many already said it doesn't matter if the larva morphs or not you can still get a cocoon before or after, some larvas don't morph either, stopped dps so it could morph to get a wing from the moth that spawn but i was kiting it on 1% for about a minute and didn't morph at all, so it's really all about luck on the drops

I think they must have increased the drop rate on this quest - this time around it seemed much better than it used to be.

I'd definitely say they've increased the drop rate... My xp of them was close to what wowhead says the drop rate should've been

When the mob did not start to metamorphose at all drop rate was 100%

Can confirm that the not metamorphose doesn't make a difference.

Tried stunning em, tried to aoe em, tried to 2man em, whatever I tried, the rate is crap...

So far 47 kills, 6/8...

This quest just sucks. :)

I have no clue why it says that the droprate is 30%, I've killed 20+ of these have gotten 1 Cocoon.

It seems like the drop rate on these is incorrect. I've killed alot of these.. and I've only seen 1 so far.

the quest log aludes to something about you wont get the cocoon if they crack open, but i just got 1 after it cracked... it might lower the drop rate or something but the droprate sucks anyway

i'm noticing that i never get a coocoon UNLESS the mob begins to metamorph.. i havnt got one before that, so i think it's critical to kill them within that time frame, and if they're close enough to death, it seems you'll get one AND the moth thinger to spawn.

8/42 for me (19%) i didnt notice any difference in the droprate based on when i killed them

i have killed hundreds of them then i thought " if i burn them their will coccon will burn to, let's try without immolation..." and dropped

It doesn't matter what spells you cast, but that is a good story. (how did you get to 65+ thinking that?)

The cocoon is a horrible drop rate, about 30%, so don't expect to kill 15 or 25 and have the quest finished.

It does not matter if the cocoon metamorphisizes or not

It says in the quest directions if you actually read them to kill them quickly or else the RUIN their cocoons. Kill them before the start to metamorphasis.

I know this sounds crazy, but the wuest text is WRONG.

It says you have to kill them before they metamorposize, but I intentionally used lower ranked spells to see what would happen if I let the silkwing larva change, and Ig ot my first cocoon drop.

Me and a friend killed these things for hours and never got any drops, this quest is a !@#$ing nightmare.

Just wait untill they change I guess...

You have to let them metamorphize. It's the only way you can get the silk, trust me on that ><

Ok, I figured this quest out. I was like most of you, killing them and having none drop. I was about to abandon the quest and I thought I'd try to kill em really fast to see if it made a difference. IT DOES. After killing 20 and getting no drops, I got all 8 cocoons in about 5 mins, killing them before a silkwing would spawn. I often killed them when the message appeared but before they actually spawned the silkwing, I would guess I got about a 90% drop rate.

Sorry to tell you guys, but i got 4 from the larva that spawned a silkwing and 4 from larva that didn't. In total I had to kill about 40 of them.
