This item is used in the quest "Challenge to the Black Flight" given by Brogg at Mudsproket after a quest chain.

While trying to complete the the quest "Challenge to the Black Flight", the what at least appears to be the final quest in the Stonemaul vengeance quests, I encountered a bug that appears as follows:

Placing the Stonemaul Banner does nothing and Smolderwing (41, Dragon) is at the top of the ramp. Smolderwing is red but not attackable and will not aggro you if you approach.

My guess is you place the banner and Smolderwing spawns and attacks you if the quest functions correctly. I assume this due to the quest objective being "Stonemaul Clan Avenged" and not "Place Stonemaul Banner at Onyxia's Lair".

I completed this quest today (17/11/07) with my level 47 Warlock and it was fine.

Placed the banner a few steps from the end of the ramp into Onyxia's lair, Smolderwing spawed and was un-attackable for first 5-10 second.

Then s/he came down and started breathing fire onto me and I could attack and complete the quests.

I also had an un-attackable pre-spawned Smolderwing, but just hung around, kept trying to attack and planting the banner, and sometime after posting the second banner I entered combat.

Was able to complete, just stick at it.

If you're trying to plant the banner, make sure you're on the ground in front of the entrance. Not on the skull, beyond the teeth, or next to it.

Also, Smolderwing attacks you automatically, and you can't attack before he's done torching the flag.

You need to be at 52,77, on the long stone path into the lvl 50 instance Onyxias Lair.

The dragon will come out. It's not a bug. When you plant the flag just in front of the entrance to the cave, the dragon appears. It begins blowing fire at you but will not come out until you are closer to it. Get closer to the dragon and it will follow you. I recommend fighting it outside, not in the cave.

I have a warlock and, first sending in my VW, I used Curse of Tongues, then Immolate, Corruption, Searing Pain, Shadowbolt, and then Shadowburn (make sure you have a soul shard). One each of these and maybe drain life and the beast is dead.
