i think it is nuts that they dont drop the red scales alot and all ive been getting was medium leather and black whelp scales the drop rate must be really hard.

I just wanted to let you all know that I was unsuccessful in having drop after 3 hours of grinding in Wetlands. I called a level 40 hunter over to skin the whelps and started dropping, but only after she skinned them. I don't know if drops on it's own without skinning, but I sure had no luck until I had a skinner come & help me out!

Yep, you'll only get the scales from skinning whelps, and infrequently at that...I only needed eight and that took about two hours.

From I can tell, after 7 levels 24-31 (almost 32 now) of grinding on them, I've never ever ever ever seen a scale drop from them, Except as a skin while skinning

So If you don't have skinning, you will have to bring a skinner along, or pick them up on the AH

Flamesnorting dropped it via "skinning" 18% per kill compared to 7%/5%/3% from the other three types. Two hours of killing non stop in an oval killing pattern. Small Flame Sac's almost had the same exact drop % rate from them.

I skinned crimson and flame whatever ones and found them very quickly I dnt know if the plain red whelps skin to them or not. which is really wierd, it took us about 20mins to get 6 for each of us.

Probably a little late now, but I don't think you'll be selling or buying these in a stack of 20, as they only stack in 5.

For reference, I needed 12, so there's my quick stats:

Lost Whelp 5/19 (26%)
Red Whelp 2/11 (18%)
Crimson Whelp 2/21 (10%)
Flamesnorting Whelp 3/5 (60%)

I got my 6x Red whelp scales by killing the Flamesnorting whelps....

ca. 35% drop rate

The recipe for the Gloves can be buyed on the cords 25.26 in the house... the name for the supplier is Wenna something :P

The scales are easiest to get by skinning the Flamesnorting whelps

I farmed these red dragons for several hours this morning trying to get the Crimson Whelpling they drop (still haven't gotten it). My Druid is a skinner, so I wound up with several stacks of these red scales.

It took me about an hour to farm 12, I will see if it pays off after they sell on the AH.

as level 70 farming for my level 40 leatherworker to make gloves for my level 19 twink. the drop rate is terrible they only drop from either crimson or red whelps and yes you have to skin em to get it it will not just drop.

Okay, this morning I went farming with my level 70 Shadowpriest - I killed them pretty quickly. In less than an hour I had 30 Red Whelp Scales (1 pair of gloves for my rogue, 4 for the AH).

The Crimson Whelps seemed to give the scales more often but the posters above saying they can only be skinned off XXX are wrong - all of the named above yield these scales when skinned.

I would have said in tihs Order: Crimson, Flamespouter, Red and then Lost.

BTW, as a heads up, Lost whelps are totally immune to shadow damage so they got one shot smited - a spell I haven't used in a looooong time!

I got 7 of these in about a half hour on my 60 priest grinding on the crimson whelps and flamesnorting whelps(best). Its not too bad, once you get 6, you can make insano lv19 rogue twink gloves.

This is used to make a glove for lvl 22 i think it was, with a bit bonus and chance on hit dealing a bit fire damage to your enemy.

These items are not junk. They are used in a couple Leatherworking items.

I wanted to make a pair of those gloves, since they sell for a good amount. So I went to the Wetlands and hunted the various Whelps there until I had seven. (I only wanted six but I got one on the way out.)

Crimson Whelps gave me the best rate, three out of 30. I killed ab out the same number of Flamesnorting Whelps and got two. The remaining scales came from a Red Whelp and a Lost Whelp, but I killed upwards of 35 each to get that.

I also found a number of Small Flame Sacs, which are useful in making Dragonbreath Chili (one of the more fun foods in the game). But after about 150 kills I only had 4, so it's an uncommon drop as well.

So my advice if you're in danger of getting damaged by the level 25-27s is to stick to the Crimson and Flamesnorting Whelps. You'll also be fending off Oozes. Higher levels, just ramapge through and get hem all. Alternately, scales have been selling for 50s each on Silver Hand, so that's 3g for six; and you can probably make at least that much back from the gloves.
