When Pickpocketing this key, I reccomend popping evasion, going stealth, pickpocket with auto-loot on. He hits for about 200-300 on rogue with full blackened defias so be quick!

Oh and keep in mind, right:

Make sure you get the key from pickpocketing BEFORE you open that chest. Otherwise - touch of zanzil and you gotta find someone to cure it for you. which kinda fails.

Just did that mistake, kek. gogo nuking down the guy in the top of the tower and picking the chest lock, then realizing i really messed up. Oh well, don't make that mistake. xD

There's an issue with the pickpocketing if someone else pickpockets him before you but doesn't kill him -- he has no key to pickpocket until he dies and respawns.

If the key respawns without him dying first (it might, I don't know) it must take a long time because my husband did the horde version and says it has the same problem.

Anyhow, the fastest way to respawn the key is to use a higher level character to kill him and then hop back on your rogue. (And, while you're there, you may as well wipe out the tower so your rogue can get the chest unmolested.)

If you don't have a higher level character, try logging out for an hour or two and checking back later.

At lvl 22, he kept resisting to my pick-pocket...:/

I did this at 22, just use vanish, he sees through sneak. I died many times until I hit 22 and got Vanish skill. Even with 5 points in sneak, he detected me.

throw a distract infront of him, and run fast to pickpocket him =) after that, sprint or vanish into the river..

just once is enough~
and, remember that, if someone stole his key before and hadn't killed him, you need to kill him before you can get the key from him.

I lockpicked the box on top of the tower and got the book and i also was given the posion and now it feels that every one can see me in stealth and it takes 7 days to go away can i still pickpocket the drone and get the key or what?

I was helping someone do this quest (they were level 20) and they kept getting detected/killed by the level 24 guy you have to pickpocket, but finally he waited at the spawn location (at the entrance to the tower) and pickpocketed immediately after he spawned before the mob would attack...he got killed but he got the key

cant get the key with the touch of zanzil he automatically see's you from like 50ft away lol.

U can use anti-venom (which u can learn to make with first aid) to remove the touch of zanzil, it's a poison and not a curse :)

oh and btw, I just finished it @ lvl 20 on my own :)
the malformed guy does resist pickpocket sometimes but it is possible, good luck all.

Wait just inside the entrance of the tower facing outside, Stealthed, if the Drone has just been killed recently. He spawns on the top of the tower entrance steps. Keep your mouse cursor in the center of the doorway and it will turn to the Attack Cursor as he is spawning. Target him and use Pick Pocket once the cursor starts changing and you can loot the key then run before he breaks off the Pick Pocket. I was lvl 20 when I did this and it worked first time, no resists. Luck to you!

L20 rogue got the key the first time ... i had killed him 3 times and then i pickpocketed him... i have camo 2, deception 4 (speed 2 and master of stealth 4 )... i had to walk behind him... i just walked up to him and hit Pickpocket and i was good to go.

Pickpocketed him just today, being lvl 20.

Strategy (if you don't want to play with respawns etc):
1. Check your Sprint ability is ready.
2. Use stealth and watch a bit - you need to learn his patrolling path.
3. When he turns around and starts walking straightforward, move behind him, keeping the safe distance.
4. Make sure no lesser Defias/Venture Co. Drones are nearby.
5. Start sneaking after him, and when you become close enough, use Sprint to sneak even faster.

The trick is that after he detects your stealth, he still does not enter combat for a few moments. That's why you should use Sprint - with this skill, you can reduce the distance quickly enough.

And after that... you should only pray your Pick Pocket will work. And make sure your arms are not trembling - first time I was successful, I was too nervous to grab the key, and pressed something, thus closing the "pocket" window.

And if he damages you for 150-200 hp per each hit - then you are as stupid as me :) When you open the chest upstairs, you receive the Touch of Zanzil effect, which greatly increases all the damage you receive; so you should steal the key FIRST, and only THEN go upstairs for the chest.

Anyway, I even managed to steal the key being poisoned. Stole first, then survived 1 hit (200dmg) from the guy, used Gouge and fled.

Hard. But not impossible.

Malformed Defias Drone
needs to be picked pocketed for the key

the drone spawns at the entrance to the tower and walks around the tower but the easy way to get the key for a level 20, is to kill him and wait behind the spawn point and just pickpocket him before he notice anything at all

Klaven Mortwake's Journal
is found at the top of the tower in a chest
, you get a poison when you open the quest.. which will "remove" your stealth.. or just make you very easy to spot. so once you have the journal.. RUN b***** RUN...

Part 1: Pick Pocketing Malformed Defias Drone.
-So I had the same problems as a few of the other commentors in that he was resisting my pickpocket. Here is what I found out:
1. When he has the key on him, he will have this sparkling glow around him. If he doesn't have this glow, he doesn't have the key and you need to kill him or wait for him to reset (not sure how long this may take).

Part 2: The other comments said it well... But to make it easiest. I just died, then ran to the top as a ghost then ressed, sapped, and looted... THE KEY YOU LOOT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH LOOTING THE CHEST! YOU NEED LOCKPICKING 75!

I went up the stairs opened the chest and got the journal and touch of zanzil but i cant get the key it wont let me loot anybody is it because i have the touch of zanzil

If you have the ability to distract, just distract him then pickpocket. He might aggro u but u should get the pickpocket off. I just did it like a second ago so it works (22 NE)

With a level 21 gnome, 1 talent spent in Master od Deception and 100 lockpicking skill.

I pickpocketed him first time, got the key, hit the sprint button and got away without aggro-ing him.

After that, got upstairs, kill the first 2 guards and avoided the other 2, sap klaven, open the chest, got the book and ... (this is my favorite part) hit hearthstone to get teleported away from this nasty place. Be careful with this: if you are not fast enoguh, klaven will get you while casting HS and you will be teleported to the graveyard instead XD

done it in 2 minutes and 47 seconds.

Instructions: Take the quest, go stealth and fidn the malformed drone; After that, pick pocket him 8 he wil lnot see u if u didnt get the book yet)get the key and go o nthe tower. U wil lfidn an eltie there, sap him and open the chest.
U can do also with the other way but if u follow my instructions it will e easy

This quest is definately soloable at 20... idk about the other comments above or what theyre talking about but... get ur lockpicking to 75... good place to do that is in redridge on those practice lockboxes. Easy, get behind the weird looking drone sap him, then pickpocket him for the key

THEN. go in the building avoid all the nps u may have to sap some... not hard. Go up to the top floor where the 23 elite is or w/e. Stealth, sap, lockpick the box. You get a curse... not a big deal go back to SW find a pally to purify you. Easy quest definately soloable

Started off at 93 LP Skill.
Duskwood Chest in the top of tower was pickable.
Picked it with-out having had the key.
Noticed I had touch of Zanzil(cant stealth etc).
So unless I had Anti-Venom(First Aid Trainable(80)) in my bag I was screwed to get the key.

Maxed my LP for the lvl by tossing "Klaven Mortwake's Journal" and opening it over and over. A good place to lvl LP is in Redridge Mountains (52,45) at Alther's mill.

Popped my Anti-Venom then picked the pocket for the key.

well i pissed my self off by opening box with lock pick before i took key.and i found what i have to do im a first aid person and a engineer i wanted to look over my engeneering but i acidently pressed first aid and i was about to turn it off but i found ANTI VENOM i wanted to see if anti venom can take of the touch of whatever his name is and i got mats (small venom sac)and maid one anc it cured me! then i got key and all then i turn in q

I made this as lvl 20 rogue (non twinked) just rogue sprint behind a drone and sap him fast, then u can pickpocket.

OMG the quest doesnt tell you u need to pickpocket the dude. I killed the guy like 5 times ( died twice) on my 20 rogue and was like wth wheres that damn key.

So like, I stealthed up the tower and took the chest, got the poison, but didn't get the key, lol. Now I gotta clear the damn poison before I can turn it in.

I did this at lvl 20....don't really understand why it was so difficult for everyone...i snuck up the tower and killed klaven at the top...no prob. I pick pocketed the malformed guy in one shot and I was done. Pretty easy on my end.

I picked up the quest, skipped the Malformed guy (probably a mistake><), stealthed to the top of the tower, wasted Klaven (probably another mistake><) and then proceeded to pick the lock on the chest successfully retrieving the journal. Then, lo and behold, I can't stealth... I look to see what kind of magic or dopey timed debuff I have on me and it says: Touch of Zanzil, Poison, -15 agility and cannot stealth or turn invisible, 7 DAYS REMAINING!

Sux. I wonder if I got it from not having the key to open the lock or if Klaven is a poisonous mofo. Anyone know if whether or not I drop the quest I'll still have the poison? or does it get removed from the NPC to whom I turn the quest in? I'de rather not have to wait 7 days to try the quest again as I need to stealth in order to sap and pick pocket... Argh!

Okay so i stole the key, stealthed my way into the tower, got all the way up to the top, sapped klaven and went to unlock the chest. It says "its locked" over and over again. i am a lvl 23 rogue. y is this happening? i tried picking the lock, and it says "its locked. its locked" i tried clicking on the key and then the chest but that does nothing either. HELP!

Gyues the chest that contain the klaven' jornal requires 75 lockpicking and the Defias Tower Key(who must be stolen from The Malformed Defias Drones)
