For aspiring dragonscale leatherworkers, in your 40s the best place to find these scales are Tanaris. Scorpid Hunters are plentiful and you'll the scorpid scales somewhat quickly there.

For higher level characters taking up DS Leatherworking later, you will find a better drop percentage from the scorpids in southern tanaris, or from the blasted lands.

That would have been good advice if the scorpids in the scorpion camp gave you Scorpid Scales when skinned but they don't. The scorpids in the camps are Cleft Scorpid https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=7078#z0Rzc

There are few to none on Argent Dawn right now. Not sure what the situation on these things is like on other servers, but if AD is anything to go by: they're worth a lot on the AH.

I've found that the scorpids around Thistleshrub Valley in Tanaris drop 2 scales instead of 1 when I skin them while still maintaining the 1 out of 4 drop rate.

Thistleshrub is a litte ways out there but I didn't get ganked at all when I farmed there as opposed to closer to Gadgetzan so it's probably safer too (PvP servers).

I found the drop rate to be pretty low but not too bad though i found around Thristleshrub Valley to be the highest drop rate usually dropping 2

the lvl 50 scorpids in Blasted lands often drop two of these, and has much higer drop rate than i ever found in tanaris.
as a lvl 49hunter i have no problem getting these. and in 10min ive gotten 15scales.

I've farmed them in tanaris and in blasted lands, and I think the speed of farming was about the same, but I found blasted lands less frustrating. The flat area in front of Dreadmaul Hold has many scorpids - I would start on the road (near the elf questgivers), work a big circle around, and by the time I got back to the road, the first scorpids I'd killed would already have respawned. In tanaris, I was having to mount to go find more scorpids, and that was annoying. The best region for me in tanaris was along the eastern edge, along the path where you escort the tanaris homing chicken.

perhaps I could blame poor luck but on my first run into Ulda, straight to the two nearest scorpid pits I didn't skin a single scale. Tanaris, however, yielded a very good return just running around the zone

Have they improved the drop rate out in Tanaris from the Scorpid Hunters? Before 2.3 I'd spend an hour out there and be lucky to get 10 or 12. So far I'm up to 6 after a few minutes. Consistent drops each time.

I was grinding the scorpids in the Blasted Lands on my level 53 hunter. Got all 40 I needed for the Dragonscale Leatherworking quest in under an hour.

Ulda is only usful untill Blizz catches on. They will actually keep you from entering an instance if you go in there too many times. So if you choose to farm in Ulda, keep in mind you've can only do it so much.

Near Dreadmaul Hold (Blasted Lands), around that small mountainous area is a good place for lvl 46 + Scorpids. With the small time frame I had for my 50 Hunter (20 minutes), I got around 13 Scales.

Another good place is Tanaris, near the beach south of CoT. Not only is it a good spot for finding Scorpid Scales , but a great place for Turtle Scales too. Mobs there range from 47 + usually.

Watch out for the elite giants though, on the beach.

I also had to suddenly get a bunch of these for the Dragonscale Leatherworking quests. For me, I found one of the best places to farm for these are in Tanaris. Specifically, between the Abyssal Sands and Noxious Lair. Just kind of make a circular path between them and the Broken Pillar and the Dunemaul Compound. You'll find lots of Scorpid Dunestalkers who pretty frequently will give you two scales per one skin.

That worked for me, anyway. Plenty of beasts around, so you can pick up some thick leather for leatherworking or for auctioning off.

As a lv70 hunter, I tried the Uldaman method. Unfortunantly for me, it proved more of a hassle than it was worth. It was very easy getting to the scorpids but there was a decently low drop rate and some trips i would get 4 and others none. But for hunters who want to try it out, I figured out a good technique. Simply put aspect of the monkey on then run about halfway to the scorpids and feign death. Then get to the scorpids and feign death again. For the scorpids themselves, i just put an explosive trap down and began to volley them. Simple as that. Just a slow process.

Although I couldn't find any big groups of scorpions together in Taneris. I did find that the chance of getting the scales went up loads from the ones near the southern coast. Unfortuntly those were also the higher level ones :(.

i grinded the beasts of tanaris for a few levels for exp and leather. your best bet is to farm thick leather (from hyenas/basilisks) and pick up the scorps along the way. there is no 100% efficient way but if you spend enough time grinding/farming youll get tons of scales. youll also get plenty of vendor trash so you can earn some cash in the process.

In about half a level of grinding I got the required scales for dragonscale leatherworking quest. (requires 40) plus a few bracers and I still have scales left over. SW of the goblin town in Tanaris there is a huge sand dune with massive piles of bones on it. Around the eastern slope of the dune are scorpid tail lashers (42-44). There is enough here that I can fight them non stop until my inventory fills.

There are scorpids inside the instance and I got scales from them.. of course I'm not sure what's the best way to get these, but it's a way to get them i didn't find in the list.

Also, they often drop these scorpid things, vendor trash, but a stack sells to the vendor for 88s, almost a 1g. And they drop these alot, so combine with farming the other beasts for thick leather, and this should be pretty easy.

Just farmed 30 pieces in forty minutes (maybe even less). Auctioneer tells me it should go for around 15g. So not bad IMO :)

I'm lvl 52, boosting my LW, so grinding these is pretty easy, but as rogue, the higher ones cast an annoying 40 sec poison, but they're also the ones with the best droprate! Heart of Noxxion FTW!

Me and another 60 shaman farmed these using the backdoor to uldaman and resetting the instance.

Enter the instance, run past the golem, and keep to the path that runs north. You'll hit the lvl 43-44 scorpids relatively quickly. Nuke 'em.

1 min later...about 20-25 scorpids to skin. Rinse, repeat.

I'm sure this could work with anyone 50+...

I farmed tanaris Scorpions for about 2-3 hours and i got 42 scales(with skinning, no drops). got dragonscale leatherworker and sold the rest on AH. got 15g for 11 scales :) thats on terenas server though

I've had the same problem farming these things, but there's a fairly easy way to guarantee a spawn.Do the chicken escort quest.

About a third of the way through the walk, it spawns three scorpids. Just let the chicken eat it, kill and skin the scorpids, go back and run the chicken over again. It's a little time consuming, but

a) you're guaranteed to see scorpids without roaming all over

b) you'll get thick leather from the mobs you kill along the way and

c) the chicken will help you kill stuff.

I just farmed these right around the gadget area and got all the ones i needed for my dragonscale quest. I still farm for them there because they're pretty easy to kill and they're almost everywhere. On most days the drop rates is pretty good. I get it about 2 out of 3. But the whole scorpid set takes a long time to get. You'll be 45 before you finish the set. Then you will just upgrade to the heavier stuff. It's a constant gathering skill. But I enjoy it. Happy hunting!

Many people are saying Badlands, many Tanaris. Personally, I'd say Tanaris. Around Gadgetzan, there are Scorpid Hunters. I killed these guys for about half an hour, and came up with over 30 scales, being about a scale a minute (From skinning only.) I might just be lucky, but kill hunters, you can skin them more often than Tail Lashers. Plus, they're only about 40-41.

Scorpid Dunestalker drops them 1 to 2 at a time each kill! You can find them south Eastmoon Ruins, and around Southmoon Ruins

It took me a little under an hour to get all the scales needed for the Dscale LW quest.(40) In the process of gathering scales, I got about a stack of Heavy Leather, and a stack of Thick Leather..I also made around 4.5g from selling all the vendor trash.. I'm a 56 shaman, so obviously if you keep up with your professions, unlike me you'll be a bit lower and it'll take a bit longer.

Yeah, they're levels 50 and 51 in northern Blasted Lands... but I've had a 100% drop rate with them so far. In my time in Tanaris, I only got maybe 3 out of a lot of scorpids (usually around level 47), but in Blasted Lands I've gotten 14 out of 14 scorpids. This combined with the grinding quest there leaves no doubt that the Blasted Lands is the best way to grind for Scorpid Scales.

I was in Tanaris and i picked up 16 Scorpid Scales in 30 minutes with a Skinning Skill of 300 at level 45. I found that Scorpid Dunestalkers usually had a higher drop rate than the regular ones. Most of them were 1 but i got two different stacks of two Scorpid Scales from Scorpid Dunestalkers. Hope that helped! X]

dunestalkers in the abyssal sands, that's where it's at. In the last 10 minutes i've gotten 24 scales. they've dropped 12/13 kills and all have dropped Scorpid Scale x2. Lvl 44 hunter made it very easy

Spent about 2 hours just riding around on my epic mount looking for any scorpid and 1 hit killing each (70 hunter). Tanaris=easy imo, and if you focus on it, you will find it rather easy. ;) happy hunting.

Tanaris is def the best place i've encountered. Also, if you do uldaman instance I noticed a few scorpid scales will drop.

i found that just farming the scoprids just south of gadgetzan for a bit got me 30 scales in about an hour, plus a load of heavy/thick leather and hides, plus some good vendor trash and XP for a level 41. Since it's close to gadgetzan it isnt far to go to unload the trash and bank the scales/leather or to run from a ganker (if you're on a pvp server, this happened to me a few times).

I worked out you need 120 to make the full set and the extra items for the dragonscale quest so it may take a while to get them all.

I did this at lvl 51 warrior arms spec. ran around and killed dune stalkers. I was able to achieve 2 stacks in about 1hr 40 mins...You can run around most of the mobs and just hunt them...Go Due south and then a little west to abyssal sands and start there work your way in a very slight sw heading more till you see the pillars of Uld Um theres plenty to hunt. the respawn is a little on the slow side...buts its an easy grind with a blue bar from 51 and 3/4 to 52 and youll complete the dragon plate quest easy enough solo with no deaths unless you are just careless..Have fun....Mcmarshall (Orion Knights)

Tried Tanaris, and Blasted Lands. Hands down, Blasted Lands has a higher drop rate. The area right out front of Dreadmaul hold has quite a few with a decent spawn rate. Got 35 in under an hour.
Mobs in area are 45-52 but generally at a time is easy enough to pull.

These drop by the 2's off of "scorpid dunestalkers" in tanaris, south side(48,58)... found that out after an hour grinding the ones listed, only to find this got em REAL quick. They're lvl 46-48ish.

I was killing in abyssal sands...killed about 5, didnt even see many in bunchs at all but killed some and none even dropped at all, went to blasted lands and pretty much everyone dropped 1 scale some dropped 2 but they are hard to find..because its so small there isnt many to kill

I got all the scales I needed in about 45 min in Blasted Lands. I did a loop around the little mountain near them and by the time I reached my starting point, they had respawned.

I'm only 40 and I farm the scorpids (45-47) just around Nethergarde Keep and drop rate is not bad. They drop 2 scales each time they drop. I left Tanaris because of ganking. :)

farming in tanaris. do circles around the broken pillar, right in the middle there --52,45. They damn things aren't social, that's for sure. But if you circle and go south from the pillar center, you should be able to keep up with the respawn rate.

I farmed these scales for the dragonscale LW, and the only reason i did is because the Stormscale AH is ridicolously (Spelling ftw? oO) overpriced. Otherwise, I could have done something more creative, like banging my head against a wall.
As a 54 shaman farming in Tanaris, i got about 15k exp (150/mob) for 30 scales.

I think that blasted lands is the best place to farm these.
The scorpok stingers have been nerfed to lv 47-48 and they drop almost 2 every time. and they keep on spawning! Just enter from swamp of sorrows, the scorpids are around the 2 blood elf npcs. Just beware of the anoyying lost ones, they run around everywhere.

Alright, after about 2 hours of trying to get scorpid scales, i have foudn that BY FAR, the best place to do it would be uldamin. Go in through the backdoor, head to about the middle of the instance with the Deadly Cleft Scorpids and kill them. Do not evne bother with any other scorpions in the instance. These have abouta 40 or 50% skinning rate for scorpid scales. After you kill all 12 or so, run out, reset the instance, and do it again. You can easily get 40 or 50 in 5 runs.

If you, like me, are too low level to grind in the Badlands, I would suggest going south of the Dunemaul compound in Tanaris.

Just south of it, there is a huge skeleton. If you draw a rough circle around it (more like an oval) following the shape of a skeleton, there is a path which contains a grand total of maybe 20-25 Scorpid Dunestalkers (strongest ones).

took me a while to trace this route myself, so I already had 32ish scales when I established the route, but once I got this one going, I got the last 8-10 scales in under 10 minutes. and I was level 45.
Just modify the route sightly according to how they spawn.

Alright guys i've EXCRUCIATINGLY farmed over 100 of these darn things in TANARIS for the whole scorpid mail set plus quest gear...here's my results. (Note: drops are from skinning, none found by looting)

Dunestalkers 50% (50 drops / 101 kills)
Tail Lashers 36% (33 drops / 91 kills)
Hunters 29% (12 drops / 42 kills)
Duneborrowers 67% (2 drops / 3 kills)

I've pretty much determined there are no set spawn points for these things...they just randomly spawn in groups of 2 or 3 (if you're lucky) around Tanaris. Dunestalkers to the south, tail lashers to the north, hunters around gadgetzan. I was best off to just travel around with my mount and kill/skin any groups i saw and move on.

(Completed in Aman Thul realm with a lvl 48/49 hunter - levelled in the process)

At least now i'm set for BG. Plus i found a piece of citrine, 2 lockboxes and 2 or 3 greens...best of luck to all.

Well, as a level 40 hunter i couldn't really farm the higher level scorpids south of tanaris so i had to settle for the ones around gadgetzan.

For my 40 scales, i had to kill:

Scorpid Tail Lasher (24/50) 48% Drop rate
Scorpid Hunter (15/41) 37% Drop rate

Not bad after gaining 75% exp to level and after using 2000+ arrows. Also got 5 greens and around 5 gold from vendor trash :)

Best way to get them (level 50+) is to go and kill dunestalkers in tanaris southern parts, they mosttly drop 2 at time and pretty often. had to get 40 myself :(

Scorpid Dunestalkers are a better way to farm the scales. Much higher drop rate than scorpid hunters, sometimes you'll even get 2 scales instead of one. These are common near the Dunemaul Compound in Tanaris.

it really sucks gettin all the scales for dragonlw i need 38 effin scales for it. and since staghelm is a new server i can only get them in small quantities. they are kinda hard to find and it sucks farmin but u can defanetly get a lot of gold off of leatherworkers.for scorpid armor and also the dragon lw quest

U want scorpid scales well I know how! If you want the scales u have to be a true dedicated leatherworker. That means u need to be a skinner... not some other proffesion. You just kill the scorpids and skin them. But be careful you have to go out to find scorpids and u could be attacked by more then 1 creature. Questions? ask me

I wish Allakhazam would fix this. Near as I can figure it seems people use "free" wow servers that have been altered in some way and rats drop anything and everything. People using the wowreader on these servers give false information to the site

Just done a farm run at Tanaris & be carefull as the hyenas and rocs and basilisks tend to aggro on mass !

These go for quite a lot of money on my server, they are used for the leatherwork specialisation for dragon leather. At least 40 of theese are need to complete the dragon quest.

So sell theese at your local AH - cheap =)

Scorpid scales are in high demand at the AH, never any for sale though.

These are used for Dragonscale Leather working (I'm sure other stuff too) and by that time the Hunter/Shaman may give up some gold to just purchase it and get it over with.

Farm these and make some good gold selling them.

If you don't need a whole lot of these and have a high-lvl char, the best way to farm them I found is in Uldaman. Enter back door and head as if you were going to the main boss. As soon as you pass all the bats, there is gonna be a pit with a bunch of Deadly Cleft Scorpids. These are the ones you need. Kill, exit, reset, and repeat =)

Don't try any other scorpids in the instance, cause those are different and do not drop the scales. You will need to kill only this pack. In 5 runs the instance allows I got 21 scales. Each run only takes a few mins to go to them (and kill any bats if you manage to aggro), kill scorpids, loot/skin, run out.

not sure if they've improved drop rates since some of the previous posts were made here, but basically all i do to collect my scales is this.
in tanaris, starting from Gadgetzan, i usually head south making a straight path towards the northern most of the two ruins (with Dunemaul Ogres present). along the way there will be quite a variety of mobs to kill/skin, scorpids included. also, the stretch between the two ruins, and the actual Compound (with the cave)is a pretty good spawning ground for the higher level scorpids.

in all honesty i've seen either type drop 1-2 scales per skin, as well as a chance for thick and heavy leather (obviously not all in one skinning).
neither type is going to give you scales every time, but i found the rate isn't that bad. what makes this a pain in the ass - if at all - is just tracking down and killing the little buggers, as they are quite spread out and don't really travel in packs or have any one spot where they mass-spawn.

all in all, at 48 (rogue) one broad circular sweep following the path i talked about above and i usually bring in about 15-25 scales on average.

scorpids in blasted lands have quite a nice drop rate, only you won't find that many and they are swarmed with mobs and unless you're 50+ it's gonna be a slight pain with all the aggro's and add's coming out to play! :)

I found a good many Scorpid Hunters NE of Gadget in the hills. There are a few other types of creatures mixed in, but primarily Scorpid Hunters. My current Coordinates are 56, 26 as I stand in the middle of a few of them.

I've been killing the scorpid hunters to get my 40 scales. And while this is pure speculation, it seems like the hyenas and basilisks in the area can be PH's for them. If you go along an area and kill everything, it seems you'll find more scorpids your 2nd time through. I tried to focus on the scorpids and hyenas, since the hyenas drop red wolf meat, tender wolf meat, and mystery meat. Good stuff for cooking. I'm still a little low for the dunestalkers, but I found the hunters a pretty good route to go if your willing to put some time into it.

Go Tanaris! Besides getting Turtles, you can also get the scorpid scales. though the dunestalkers tend to drop more scales, they are fewer and harder to come by. with the respawn rate close to Gadgetzan, it's possible to collect many scales in a short period of time. You will get aggroed on by hyenas and rocs and basilisks. the Giant eggs are part of the artisan cooking qst, hold onto them, people will need them. the skins from the others provide you with excellent mats for making scorpid mail. This is a great present to hunters and if you can advertise a complete set at once, it's golden!

For those playing Classic, Tanaris is your best bet. The scorpids in Uld seem to have a pretty low drop rate, and the ones in the Blasted Lands are not numerous enough and are heavily farmed.

At least according to Wowhead, all three Tanaris scorpid species (scorpid hunters , scorpid tail lashers , and scorpid dunestalkers ) have the same skinning droprate for these scales. In my anecdotal experience, tail lashers have a lower rate but that might just be bad RNG on my part. That said, the advantage to the dunestalkers is about half the time they drop them, they drop 2 of them.

The Wowhead map for dunestalkers is way off. They are populated across the entire southern third of Tanaris. A good, relatively low-stress area to farm them is just north of the Dunemaul Compound as well as west of the Compound between Thistleshrub Valley to the south and the Noxious Lair to the north.

In Tanaris :
Scorpid Tail Lasher appears to share respwans with Blisterpaw Hyena and Glasshide Gazer.
Scorpid Hunter appears to share respwans with Starving Blisterpaw and Glasshide Basilisk.
In general, Scorpids, Blisterpaws and Basilisks appear to share respawns.

During TBC Classic I went to get some on my lvl 70 shaman.
Only killed the scorpid hunters and skinned them. Found that the drop rate was not absolutely awful around south from Gadgetzan (53.89 , 35.41).
