Imo hinterlands (down at the ocean to the east) is the best place to grind these. They don't have the biggest drop rate, but instead they have a way faster spwan rate, and since i grinded them as lvl 70 killing them didn't take long. And if you're horde there is even a city nearby so you can sell all your trash quick

Turtles, https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=5431 , on the coast south of CoT on the east and the southern coastal tip of Tanaris have a decent skinning rate (50%) for these as well.

These ones are hostile but greater in numbers compared to the neutrals in the northern part.

I recommend farming turtle scale for any new players looking for mount money between the levels of 37-40. You *must* be a skinner to benefit from this, but the mudrock turtles along the coast of Dustwallow can be skinned for this, as well as also-valuable medium and thick leather. The average price per stack of turtle scale on my server is about 5g. Between the turtle scale, medium leather, thick leather, and vendoring the speckled shell fragments, you can run up about 100g in probably 3-5 hours depending on kill speed (and whether or not anyone else is farming them). It's quick and easy cash for skinners and it won't take out of the questing system for long if that is what you prefer to do. And you will level at least once or twice in the process.

I am updating this to indicate that once you get to the 41-43 range, the Steeljaws in Tanaris drop these at a much better rate.

But what I want to know is how much in AH are these generally worth? the box at the top say 20s but i see them for MUCH higher on Draenor realm. if any1 has any idea what i should sell mine for id appreciate it

If it's not obvious from the above comments you need to SKIN the turtles for the scales. Although they do randomly drop it's an incredibly low drop rate.

Notes:
1. Tanaris has 2 types of turtles. Low 40's turtles in the north and aggressive 49/50 turtles in the south. The southern turtles are more complicated as there are roaming patrols of ocean giants.

2. Hinterlands is the best place for high 40's/ low 50's horde, because most of the turtles are above ground and your next to a city to vendor.

3. For alliance high 40s/low 50s the best place is southern tanaris. You can vendor and buy bullets/arrows in the caverns of time. Druids have an advantage in tanaris as many turtles are underwater and you have to swim around the ocean giants. Aquatic form FTW

4. Took me about 1 hour to grind out 40-50 turtle scales and 70-80 thick leather.

5. Dont buy scales on the AH unless your really lazy. People sell them for 1g per scale. You can get 2x from a single turtle in tanaris.

Tanaris is the best place to find the turtle scales, hands down. If you want to go to dustwallow feel free to grind for like 3-4 hours for little reward. The port town in Tanaris is a couple minute walk from Gadgetstan, faster on a mount. The turtles drop at least one shell (if you skin them) about 50% of the time. And as for the respawn time, just go up and down the coast, killing them all and go back to the other side of the town and do the same on that side. This works for me pretty well 'cuz I can sell of the vendor trash they drop. Good luck with those Wildvine quests!

In my opinion, the turtles near Steamwheedle Port are no good for farming Turtle Scales. They are too far apart and respawn slowly, you will spend most of your time running or swimming between turtles instead of killing them. And there seems to only be a 30% or so rate of scales on these turtles as well.

I was able to skin 6 stacks of turtle scales using around 450 arrows at Land's End Beach (under an hour, level 62 hunter). Besides the scales, I also netted 5 stacks of turtle meat, 1 stack of rugged leather, 4 stacks of thick leather, a couple of pearls, and I threw out many stacks of raw yellowtail fish and all gray items.

There are no giants patrolling down this far. It's so far out of the way, I can assume it's deserted nearly all the time. The turtles are so closely packed that I was able to easily pull 5 at a time with my pet.

This spot is definitely worth the 4 minute run down the coast. Bring LOTS of extra bag space if you want to have any room for vendor fluff.

Edit to add: I just went down with 36 slots free and did another 50 minutes of farming down at Land's End Beach: 103 scales, 95 thick leather, 36 turtle meat, 30 zesty clam, 26 rugged leather, 3 pearls, and 63 speckled shell fragments (i.e., 6g worth of grays).

So far the best place for me to obtain Turtle Scales it was Land's Earth Beach. South Tanaris. It is a bit far away but the respawn rate and number of turtles there is huge compared to Tanaris northrend coast.

Right now on my server (emerald dream) there going for 1G each. The drop rate of them is crazy and leather workers are crazy for them. Good way to get some extra mount money. lol

I suggest farming at the over look cliffs in Hinterlands. The turtles there are docile (not saying too much for the horde though) lol, just watch your step. Happy farming :D

The best place for level 36-42 is dustwallow on the beach, it will take you a while to get a lot, but you will get mad xp if you stick with it, right now I am 49 and hitting the Hinterlands turltes on the far east beach, I can get 60 scales in under 2 hours, which I can sell at the AH for a lot of gold, not to mention the turtles drop clam's that have pearls in them, and the speckled shell fragments sell for 45s per stack of 5, so basically, you can make about 20 gold selling all of the stuff you get from the turtles at the AH if the market is right at the time.

Started farming these last night at (level 38) with the Mudrock Burrowers at Duskwallow. Killed 13 of them (Around level 39/40) and got no scales from skinning so I gave up and went for the tortoises / spikeshells on the east beach.

Stats for them are as follows:

Time farmed - 6hrs :(
Mudrock Tortoises - 84 killed, 19 scales (23%)
Mudrock Spikeshell - 96 killed, 21 scales (22%)

Green Items: 6
Blue Items: 1
12 gold made from vendor trash dropped.

Next time I'm farming whelplings or humanoids. Much better drops and easier to kill. Could have bought 20 scales for 2g anyway. Of course, now I want to complete the quest I can't get the pattern for sale. :(

The Saltwater Snapjaws on the eastern coast of the Hinterlands proves to be the best place for me. I skin an average of 2 scales per kill about 91% of the time. Rugged and Thick leather drop as well and the vendor trash is annoying but not bad in price when sold. Just be sure to empty your packs because the speckled shell fragmenst only stack to 5.

There's also a 49 elite turtle that's in the same spot and you can usually skin 4 scales from him. He's easy enough to solo for me, but I'm a 60 hunter.

Why is it that i am only lv 36, with 210 lw and 225 skin and to get mats to make a req lev 37 armour peice you need to farm lv 42's+ for a good drop rate! Maddness......

I just got about 150 of these in less than 2 hours of grinding (Acctually, I was trying to get golden pearls with no luck.) Also, 170 thick leather and about 50 rugged leather, of the turtles in Hinterlands. I'm level 50 priest btw.

I am farming for turtles scales on the beach in dustwallow at coor. 60,20 to 64,40. I was getting a drop rate of about 20% to 25%.

These scales are very easy to get if you farm the lvl 37-38 but you have to skin them, they actually come quite frequently.

I found probably 1 out of 5 kills along the beatch in Dustwallow March, However beeing lvl 41 the turtles there are mostly green, so I'm going to try Tanaris to see if the drop rate is better there, However I dont think turtle scales are a rare drop.

If you're high enough go to the east coast of the Hinterlands. There are 49 and 50 level snapjaws with an 80%+ rate there....if you're a skinner. They don't drop, they have to be skinned. Thick leather drops with each one skinned. Sometimes you even get two scales.

At level 40 Hunter Blood Elf, went to try Dustwallow and was getting about 1 in 5 to 1 in 10 drop. Went to Tanaris, East Coast, next to the docks at Steamwheedle Port. They were level 43 and easy to kill at my level 40. Map coordinates (67,20):

Heavy Leather: 9
Thick Leather: 10

Tried South a little ways, past the next set of rocks at (67,35):

If you go further south past the pirate cove, you run into level 49 Surf Gliders (turtles) , which were too hard to kill at my level.

ok FORGET EVERYTHING what they say here!
Just go to Lands End Beach (53,92) in Tanaris and farm there. Why?

- Theres TONS of surf gliders, dropping 0-2 each skinning attempt,
- Theres so many you cant farm the beach without atleast twice going to sell stuff.
- You gain skinng to up to 310 there
- You get $%^&loads of Rugged and Thick leather
- It's 10x faster then anywhere else.
- Been tehre about 50 minutes now and got 50 Scales. (I'm lvl 70 tho.)
- Ton's of cooking stuff dropping there

I had trouble getting these but i have found that the saltwater snapjaws outside revantusk village in the hinterlands have and almost 100% drop rate when skinned as the often drop in pairs

Lands end beach is only good at level 46 or above and is only easy at level 48 or above. But otherwise it is great. Almost every time you skin a turtle there atleast one scale drops. But unless you are level 47 or above i recomend you go kill steeljaw snappers.

With a 300 skinning skill, I had a drop rate of about 46% off the Steeljaw Snappers in Tanaris.

I had about 90 % drop rate on the 40-43 snappers. Also got a few pearls. also got a few rubbish greens. Did this as lvl 51 resto druid using cat form wearing cloth.

The East coast of Tanaris the turtles (lvl 40-43) there have about a 1/3 drop rate, I finished all of the Feralas leather quests there.

PS: Theramore turtles (Lvl 30's) was about a 1/15 drop, since I killed about 30 with only 2 drops.

heheh...hopefully my submitted shot got through, i had a 300 skinning skill AND I'm a hunter (pwns all animals) it took me about an hour to get 60 scales >:)

300 Skill, 49 Hunter. The Hinterlands is easily the best spot to get them. I've been grinding them for exp and scales. Gotten roughly over 100 or so in a couple hours. The elite mob that roams around there even dropped x4 for me one time. 80% of they time they drop scales which is over 80% for me as it is, they will x2. Going for 15g on my server, today was a great haul for me.

I don't know if it's worth fighting off lvl 50ish turtles but the drop rates are way higher and sometimes you get 2 with one skin
The far east coast in the hinterlands, mobs are all over the place.

DWM is by far the best place to farm these. along the eastern coast by theramore island. i picked up a stack in less than 30 minutes. very pleased with that. also, they give plenty of heavy leather, and thick leather.

beware of the level 46 elite coral shark that patrols the water around the area if u venture out to kill the turtles in the water and on/near the murloc islands.

I'm a 46 beastmaster hunter and was out of arrows i did go to the traingle southest point of tanaris grinded there for about 1hour 30 min and got 57 scales i got luck cause there was a 51 orc shammy killing them and i skinning they are pretty easy to kill died 1 time cause i pulled 4 :( so go there 1 and half hour 57 ! i needed scales for wild leather quest maybee it goes faster if u got it?

Tanaris on the beach near Steamweedle port. Good numbers, decent drop rate. Often you can skin leather and scales of one turtle. There are no murlocs or other hostiles here so it is perfect farming nearby vendor lets you empty the vendor trash on you north to south runs. And yes, you need to have skinning to get them.

All i did was go to Tanaris and kill the turtles around there. the drop rate is wicked. Nearly everyone i killed dropped them. (you get a load of thick leather to)

I definitely think that the Southern tip of Tanaris is the easiest place to grind...tried several techniques, but the highest yield was grabbing a few, swiping, and walking backwards towards the next mob...repeating...could get a pile of 6 or so if I switched targets repeatedly...otherwise they die too easy. Got 96 scales in one MoTW buff.

I went to WAVESTRIDER BEACH to farm scales. I gathered 24 before I stopped, about 1 hour of gathering

What I learned: The turtle scales came from skinning, almost exclusively

First turtle dropped one. Looked promising. After that, only two of 24 were dropped. The rest were skinned.

I just got about 48 of these in just over an hour from the snapjaws on Wavestrider Beach in Tanaris. Pretty decent drop rate if you ask me!

Yeah lands end beach is remote, but if you have a friend who's a protection pally let them herd up a dozen with retribution spells on and let them beat themselves to death. Can get tons and on our server they sell for 1gp each.

Just adding to the same pile of info here.

At lvl 64 (Combat Rogue), Steamwheedle Port in Tanaris is the best place to farm Turtle Scales for me so far. Dustswallow sucks major arse compared to Tanaris. I was there for 2 hours last night trying to farm scales for the long overdue Pratt McGrubben leatherworking quest. Got scales maybe 1 in 20 kills. And the Dustswallow shore is vast and the inventory keeps filling up.

I got to Steamwheedle. There the turles roam just right outside the port. For me they drop scales in an approx ratio of:

1 scale > 1 scale > none > 1 scale > 1 scale > none > etc)

... give or take, occationally.

And the added bonus is that I can easily run just a few feet and sell vendor junk when inventory is full.

Well i must say that the marsh is the best spot another thing i have come to see if you get a turtle meat you are likeing to get a scale when you skin so far the rule has not failed me out of 30 trys now. Godd luck and hope this info helps

I took the advice mentioned in the this thread to go to Tanaris at the very bottom of the map...

And in just under an hour and a half I got:

131 Thick Leather

120 Turtle Scales

41 Rugged Leather

2 Iridescent Pearls

1 Black Pearl

2 Golden Pearls

If you are higher lvl, you should definetly go to Hinterlands, near Raventusk Village. If you are Horde you can sell the junk during the farm.

So, the easiest place to get Turtle Scale seems to be from the ones in Dustwallow Marsh, from the beach. However, I spend one hour skinning those turtles non-stop and got only one scale from it.

It can only be got with skinning, so I guess it will take a while before you get 40 of these scales for the Leatherworking quest.

A great place to farm these scales is the coastline of Tanaris where you do the Cuergo's Gold quest. Hardly anybody ever there and there are TONS of the turtles there, and on land, too. Location around 54, 92.

the scales skin off the turtles on the coast in The Hinterlands pretty fast, and most times i got multiple scales from them! i got three scales off of Gammerita three times!

for an hour's work (with my lvl 60 Paladin ;^) i got 35 scales. not too bad.

I found that the best place is in Tanaris, as well. You get about 1 scale per 3-5 turtles. DWM only gave about 1 scale every 15-20 tutles. What I did notice however, is that when a Turtle drops Turtle Meat, there will always be a scale. Also, If you are trying to make the Wild armor set, you will need 21 Wildvine total. Wildvine can be farmed from the Trolls in STV.

Though I have personally heard very good things about the turtle scale droprate off the Hinterlands turtles (as well as other nice items), for Alliance on PVP servers, you should stay away after the 1.5 patch. 1.5 added a Horde town to the south end of the shore, and they are very happy to protect it from any "invading" Alliance.

Dustwallow Marsh (the beach) is the place if you are a bit to lo lvl, just look out for the Murlocks running around. :)
The droprate is horrible 1/5 but you get Thick and Heavy Leather to. :)

Tanaris is brilliant for turtle scales. I spent an hour and a half there and came away with 31 scales, 31 thick leather, 30 heavy leather, a few hides, about 20 turtle meat, 10 zesty clam meat, 1 black pearl, 1 nice green for the AH, and 3 golds worth of greys. Seems like I was getting a rate of more like 50% on scales rather than 20%. Also my leatherworker is my fisher too, so got some nice stuff from fishing nodes along there.

So, this isn't just a good spot for farming turtle scales, it's a nice spot for farming full stop. And I didn't have any competition from alliance or horde. So kudos to whoever first suggested it, I'll be spending a while here. :)

Wow, I just finished the vest and then the leggings quest. For the first one I spent 1 hour south of steemwadle port and got 40 scales, 3 nice greens that got me 15 gold at AH, 50 or so thick leathers, a bunch of hides, a black pear and a gold pearl, and about 3 gold of turtle parts for vendors. I went right back when I got the leggings quest and spent 2 hours in Tanaris at the same spot and got 72 scales, about 80 thick leather, 40 heavy, a bunch of hides, 2 gold pearls and one iridescent, 4 nice greens for the AH (that I'm hoping for about 20 gold), and about 7 gold worth of vendored turtle parts. Oh, and leveled to 43. Tanaris is the way to go for these quests. For me the drop rate of the scales was about 3 out of 5 or so. There were never any scales or finished products on my AH so I had to grind it out, happy I did now. I'll be coming back here for more grinding and will put up some cheap finished items on the AH so others that are struggling with these quests don't have as hard of a time as I did at first.

I would go by the total number of scales found off the mobs and say that Saltwater Snapjaw in Hinterlands are the best way to get Turtle Scales. (4x more total than anywhere else) They spawn all over the eastern coast of Hinterlands so they're easy to find, and the skin rate of scales is higher, even if it is still not great. The only drawback is that they are pretty high level. (but the !@#$ty drop rate on the others is reason enough to wait to do this quest)

Though it seems as if the turtles in te Hinterlands would be your best bet, on my server most people don't loot or skin when they do the qst for the fishing rod. It's disgusting to see over 50 turtle corpses littering the area at once and it seems as though i have much better luck on wavestrider beach in Tanaris. Have a shaman (like me) give you underwater breathing. also note that the speckled shell fragments sell for a little over 45s a 5 stack. might not mean much to you, but every little bit helps. It's always a nice gesture as well to take LWs out turtle hunting for their wild leather qsts as they need (i believe) 168 scales to complete the qsts plus wildvine and leather and thread. I like to hun turtles often as you can generally find a zone that gives good xp for kils and i present all of my guildie shammies with a set (minus the worthless bracers) as a hitting 40 present.

I think Nisi is 100% in all fo what he says , i completely agree with him before i even read this thread. I found easy , if you are a high roller and can spare a few gold. To go to Tanaris make a few shouts about asking for lower levels to help you skin for a couple gold . Worked for me :P

Land's Edge Beach in Tanaris drops turtle scales and either thick or rugged leather Turtles spawn fast and there's no one else farming there.

The turtles just outside of Raventusk Village in The Hinterlands (49 and up) sometimes give 2 scales per skin. Droprate is listed as 50% and that seems fairly accurate.
