Maws is a classic Spielberg shark fight, oxygen tank, explosion, all that stuff.

Seriously though. Maws is a gigantic 'minnow' (Azuregos's words, not mine) who was charged by Azuregos to guard the Blue Scepter Shard of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands needed to open the gate to both the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj and the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj.

One piece of three (Green and Red Scepter shards are from different quest branches) needed to reform the Scepter of the Shifting Sands.

Side note: We wouldn't have to be reassembling it if Fandral Staghelm hadn't broken it in a fit of rage over his dead son. Take out your anger on him, for making you pay so much money for a quest chain.

He's a bit of a bastard. Takes about 15-20 ppl. We tried last night to down him with 12 and got eaten. He frenzies and is only tranqable when his bottom fins glow red. Besides that, he is just a long fight and hits anywhere between 1500-4000k per hit.

Can be killed by a good tank and a healer at level 70. Did it with Druid tank, Paladin Healer and Hunter. Hunter made the fight go faster, but was not essential.

This video shows the summoning and killing of Maws. He doesn't drop any loot except for the scepter. However, the turn-in of the scepter quest reward grants epic quest rewards down the quest chain.

He is part of opening AQ.

Maws is a pretty straightforward fight. You tank him, healers heal the tank, rogues beat on him, and hunters/casters stand back and fire.

There are only a few notes to be aware of.

- The fight is in the water. Water walking, water breathing, and levitate are all handy.

- He enrages periodically, so mages should keep detect magic on him. When he enrages, hunters should fire a tranquility shot.

- At 20% he begins doing AE damage. I'm a 60 priest and it did maybe 40% of my hit points in damage every time it procced (15 second intervals or so). A group healing spell did the trick. It procced about 3 times before we brought him down.

It is my understanding that Maws only drops one blue crystal no matter how many people in the raid have the quest to get it.

Did this today with 38 and i have to say it would probably be doable with 25-30.

Needs are:
Tank
Healers (hits for about 1.8k on me and im a rogue)
Hunters with tranq shot as he enrages
DPS

water breathing/water walking etc are just fun stuff.

Did it last night with 32 people. I'd say a tier 2 geared 25 man would be sufficient. As far as I could tell his enrage happens at regular intervals, it is displayed in the combat log or detect magic and is easily tranquable. We were prepared for a much more devastating AOE at 20% based on some of the above postings, but it seemed a non-starter: it did normal damage (around the same amount of physical damage he was doing ) and produced a slight knock-back effect.

Maws is not tauntable so let a tank build aggro a bit at the beginning. We found the warlock underwater breathing buff to be useful as you could fight the shark above and below the waterline.

Took longer to get everyone out to the swirling wreckage than to summon and fight the shark.

Just did this fight 9-man. Took about 7 minutes total, but didn't hit nearly as hard as he used to.

Bring 20+ people and you'll drop him easily. Just throw lots of healing at the MT and keep Maws tranquilized.

When/where/how does this guy spawn? do you need to be a naxx guild to try him? is he a boss that spawns once a week or every few days or is he back right after he's down?

We just did this with 11 people. It took a while, but as long as you keep the tank up, it's pretty easy. As a mage, I wanded for 20% of the fight because I was oom. With 20 people it should be a piece of cake.

Few things I have taught about this shark today (took 20 ppl on second try):

The summoning place is in open waters. You cannot sit and drink/eat - except waterwalking classes (priest, shaman...)
After summoning, you have few dozens of seconds to prepare as he is circling around
1.17m HP
If you don't shoot down the frenzy fast enough, your T2.5 tanks will be one-bited with ease
If you die and your group is able to last for another minute, you can corpse run and rejoin
If you wipe, he will not despawn (at least for next few minutes) and you can try again
Threat and hunter/mage mechanics are key to this fight. Below 20%, all healers can prove themselves

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the music yet!
Well, if u get a chance to encounter Maws, do not forget to turn on your in-game music (ctrl+m by default). It'll make you smile :)
