This pet does indeed have one of the fastest attack speeds available (1.2). Combined with Beast Mastery talent tree, this pet is a true caster killer.

Enjoy him while you can however, pet normalization in The Burning Crusade will make him obsolete.

if you manage to find the also rare ghost howl just follow him around and the rake will be somewhere close by. i spent about 20 - 30 minutes looking for the rake , then after i found the ghost howl, followed him for a bit then killed him it only took me about 5 minutes to find and tame the rake

As of the most recent patch(2.0.3), he has the same attack speed and stats of all other cats of his level. His move speed is also identical to all other cats.

He used to be cool, but not any more. Get a boar for charge and gore or something you like the look of instead.

Here is what his stats are once you tamed him:

Strength: 31

These are good stats for a beginin hunter, but what Primax says he isnt cool any more the boar out RFK ( Razorfen Kraul ) is in, but that has a high lvl.

The rake is the first level you canget the tawny lion look. It is also on the model for the barrens, and never seen again in the game.

Given that its actually very uncommon at higher levels to encounter a real 'normal' lion. Black and white cats are ironicly more common

Damn you Blizzard, you used to see every twink hunter in the game with one of these, well at lvl 19 and 29. Was so fun to be in an premade WSG group with 4 other hunters and just own. But now the Lightning serpent (only good magical pet in the game imo, boar ( gotta love that charge), or Owl or Vulture with schreech is the way to go.( most people think these suck but it has great rage dump and can hit hard) I miss you Rake, you were so great back in the day.

The rake is my first But not only pet I suggest that u begging hunters looking for a pet buy a stable space at lvl 14, put the rake in then go and get Dishu in the barrens He is mcuh better and looks cooler too like the type of pet that you wouldnt be ashamed of at lvl 70. Dont get me wrong i love my rake and am nvr getting rid of him but you should have better options too

Just got him.. He/she's on the Golden Plains, near that mountain thingy. :D Or that's where I got him/her from.

After the taming, I had to wait a while. A sec or so, until he/she was "mine". If you move before he/she's yours, the taming will fail. That's what happened on me. Tried two times. ^^ Hope you'll get him/her too, he/she is fast!

...Have to hate that "he/she" thing.

I was able to find The Rake right away upon walking into the open area, where everyone else has posted, but what suprised me was just how packed full of hostile mobs the area was. I could barely move without getting one or more (up to 5 at one point) charging me. So after my initial spotting, and then having my taming interrupted, it took me 30 minutes just to get The Rake as "alone" as possible so that I could tame him without one of his "friends" joining in.

But the wait and patience was well worth it because he is now mine and is an amazing pet to have, especially right at level 10.

But to all of you that are within the first few levels of being able to tame, just beware of all the hostile mobs in the area (mostly in the 8 - 10 range), it can take awhile, but it is worth it.

First of all, the coordinates given were effective, 52, 18 in Mulgore. So was making a macro with /target The Rake...everything seemed to be going smoothly...

A friend and I were hunting (a druid) while waiting for Rake to spawn. After probably 5 minutes clearing the area, I saw Rake appear on my radar. I hastily abandoned my pet, my druid hit me with regen and I started taming...I was so concentrating on my own health that I failed to notice that the Rakes health was dropping fast. Then JUST as the Taming Bar finished, the Rake took one more shot and DIED on my DAMGAGE SHIELD I neglected to remove! The guy attacks so fast he beat the crap out of himself on my damage shield! GAH! I KILLED THE RAKE!

Well, as you can guess I was quite put out, so I decided to stick around if it took 8 hours. Well, it only too about 15 min and he showed up again...this time it went without a hitch...having completely abandoned the use of damage shields for the rest of the night! Hehehe.

I named him Rage, in memory of how I felt when he died.

I got this guy as a level 10 Night Elf, and thought I'd share some tips for getting him for other elves and lowbies. Some might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised.

1) When getting to Mulgore, go through Ashenvale and The Barrens.
Maybe this seems like a no-brainer, but some (like me) maybe hate Night Elf areas and choose to quest in Elwynn. For this reason I decided to run through STV to get to him, which took a very, very long time.

2) Do not try to die at one spirit healer, run to another as a ghost and resurrect elsewhere.
It doesn't work, you will just res where you died.

3) Do it naked!
When you die on the run to Mulgore (which is pretty likely) your equipped items suffer a 10% durability loss. If you're naked, that isn't a problem, so you can die all you want. Of course this is different when ressing at a spirit healer.

4) Macro it
Make a macro saying "/target The Rake" (without the ""). Run around where he spawns spamming it over and over. If he's anywhere nearby, you'll target him, and then you can mark him so you can see where he is on your map.

5) Don't expect this guy to outrun epic mounts
He won't. The only pet that used to was King B, and since then all run speeds have been normalised.

6) Flight paths
On the long run, pick up any relevant flight paths you happen to run near along the way. You don't want to make that long run more than once.

7) Don't ruin another's tame
If another hunter beats you to taming him, or even steals the tame from you, DON'T BE TEMPTED TO KILL IT. Of course you'll be pissed that you didn't get him, but if you ruin the tame for the other hunter all that means is that next time he spawns, you'll have more competition for him again, and possibly have to wait even longer if the other hunter gets him the next time too. Just swallow your pride and be the bigger hunter, and let 'em have it :) He's probably the most common rare spawn ever.

Yes people it's true...my Rake was 1,20 and I logged out to play my main, a few weeks later I come back...2,00 attack speed :( and the running speed has been nerfed too, for all pets 1,15 max now. Blizzard has ruined all the fun with pets.

I tamed him at lvl 10 on my hunter after asking my guild whats a good lvl 10 pet they said the rake so i got the map of were he wanders ( the golden plains) and went looking...
it took me a while to find him but i did eventuly and i tamed him the wait was worthwhile i also have
echeyakee ( how ever u spel it) and i prefer the rake

The rake Spawns between 55,17 and 52,18...He patrols around there.. I tamed him 2 min ago...I just need to fix a name there=P Anyone knows a nice name ;)?

this pet used to have an attack speed of 1.00

the fastest attack speed of any pet untill broken tooth

but now, like every other pet, his attack speed is 2.00

my advice is to wait till lvl 14 and tame one of the barrens prowlers, this will save you the hastle of camping The Rake

I got the rake for my hunter friend the other day and after he logged and cam back the next day something bazaar had happened..... The Rake had turned into a lynx! All of the same stats but with a lynx skin. It's awesome but I wonder why this happened.

I know it's been a while since any Rake discussion but I wanted to pop in here for a minute since I saw I got a reply on my own post about Rake a while back. I wasn't in any way trying to bash Humar The Pridelord. I had him as well as Rake. Camped Humar's spawn for about 6 hours to get him too. I leveled him to the same level as my Rake, to compare in game stats. Everything about Humar was inferior to Rake except 30 HP and 0.2 dps, which was probably due to the fact that Humar had 1.4 speed instead of the 1.2 speed of Rake. This doesn't mean you can't use Humar, it just means he's not as good as Rake stat wise, unless 30 HP and 0.2 dps means that much to you. Humar looks cooler but he's just not as good in my opinion. For me, there's two pets to use, Rake at level 10 up to level 43, then King B. after that. Of course, that's just for the speedy dps boosting pets and not tank types. Just my two cents. Later.

this was a very easy catch, i had no help from others, lvl 10 orc hunter, as soon as i hit lvl 10 i went to mulgore, i was expecting a bit of a hard catch but it was soooo easy i just concusive shot him then tame, worked well now im soloing with my fav pet "seth" in mulgor leveling untill i can get Echeyakee and another stable slot so i have both, and then again i will get humar of course, all just to say i have them all, it was also very easy to find him as i went to mulgore and jamp of at the furthest east part of course i died but doesent take long to res there, walked around for about 20 secs and seen him with another cat, pulled him away with concusive shot and tamed easy,

I was on today after reading the posts about the rake and i went to search for him on my lv 10 BE hunter i turned on my beast tracking and i was about to give up hope when i spotted him i did consusive shot and started the tame and i got him yay! :) i trained him and taught him claw rank 2 and growl rank 2 as i get more attacks i shall teach them to him also i named him Rageclaws.Oddly enough his attacks seemed faster them 2.0 dps like blizzard made it after BC.I'm really happy about this!

Does anyone have a clue at how often he can spawn?

I've spent about 3 hours searching for him without any luck. There are no other people in the area when I look. I've tried 3 different times of day.

I've killed Ghost howl about 3 times (and only about 1/3 of his spawn points are in the rake's area).

Just hit level 10 and tamed him in the same night! Found him wandering about Mulgore at level 9 and rushed to level 10 while following Mr. Rake about, he's my first pet! <3!

He wasn't too hard to find. Found on the edges of the areas highlighted on the map.

The Rake Attack speed = Attack speed of Durotar Tiger (Echo Isles near Sen'jin).
But running speed is better :) He intercept enemies much faster.

I've had Rake since I was a level 14 Hunter, and I'm still using her to this day. I've gone and caught all three of the special lions, Rake, Humar The Pridelord and the Horde quest Echylee(not sure on the spelling). So plain lion, black lion and white lion. Don't get caught up in the hype of Humar though! I caught him and leveled him to level 28 to compare his stats to Rake, and all of his stats were far lower, his speed was lower(1.4 compared to Rake's 1.2). Humar had about 30 more HP and did 0.2 more damage, but everything else sucks about it except that he looks cool. Echylee is just neat looking, and is slow as a clod, so don't catch him unless you just want a sorta unique pet, especially for Alliance Hunters.

Otherwise, yes, Rake is a great pet if you like cats, and with frenzy his speed drops to 0.92, and he'll tear through anything.

How does The Rake compare against a Juvenile Snow Leopard of the same level?

At level 14, my Juv smacked down a spider, croc, tamed "Timber" (wolf) pet and tamed MangeClaw (bear) pet, all of same level. My Juv @ 14 had 11.0 DPS with 1.5 Attack speed where The Rake @ 15 was only 10.2 DPS with 1.2 Attack Speed. I haven't had a chance to test fight against him yet. Will the faster attack speed win over DPS?

Just curious. I'm a newb hunter trying to figure all this out, so any constructive comments would be appreciated.

As a young hunter roaming the fertile plains of Mulgore, my tauren alt tamed The Rake. I grew interested in the other Barrens lions, Echeyakee and Humar the Pridelord, and eventually tamed them too in order to compare. At the age of 25 they were identical in all stats except for damage, attack speed, and damage per second. Here's the breakdown:

The Rake
damage 20-26
attack speed 1.2
dps 19.4

Echeyakee
damage 34-44
attack speed 2.0
dps 19.4

Humar
damage 22-28
attack speed 1.3
dps 15.5

I thought Humar was the true beauty of the bunch, but the stats must rule in the end. When the time came to tame another pet, Humar was the first to be released back into the wild. Echeyakee soon joined him--after hunting with the Rake, Echeyakee was just too painfully slow on the attack.

When I'm of age to do so, I hope to tame Broken Tooth and gage her merits as well. Until then, I am more than pleased with The Rake.

Logged in just for a sec to see if The Rake was wondering about, and much to my surprise there he was. I made a macro like one poster suggested to target the rake, and that made it very easy to spot him. I dropped Mazzaranche and tamed The Rake. I think I'm happy now, I have The Rake for DPS and Death Flayer for tanking.

I just tamed this with my 11 Dwarf hunter. It was a pain to get through dustwallow marsh because of the stealthed spiders but it wasn't impossible.

I tamed a prarie wolf to keep if I didn't find Rake, but he just walked right up to me so I got rid of the wolf.

However, I was much more impressed with my wolf already knowing bite2 and howl, so I'm going to stable Rake and go back and get the prarie wolf for my main. I thought the wolf looked better also IMO, so it was a bit of a let down when I tamed Rake. Though, I'm still keeping him.

ETA: Also it was so easy because I'm on a PVE server, but since it wasn't peak time there was no one around anyway

I sent my level 16 elf out to find this animal, wasnt easy, first i had to walk thru darkshore-auberdine-stonetallon-barrens-Mulgore. Died 1x and used my pet as bait to escape many a potential death.
I get to the spawn area and search for over 1 hour...no Rake.... i log in next day same thing....so i go get my high level toon to come lay waste to every animal in the spawn area and woot, The Rake spawns in 15 minutes.
I log back in my hunter and tame this beast, i hope its as good as you all say it is.
I will know soon.

The rake is one of the unique ones. His attack speed is faster than a regular cat (1.2 instead of 1.4). Most aren't better, he's one of the better ones.

Tamed him tonight on Argent Dawn, he rocks! Made it up the river to the barrens then carefully went across to muglore was fun.
Im a lvl20 hunter but this dude still is well woth it fr thre DPS will use him as my BG/PvP pet!

I just got the Rake last night with a 22 Elf.
I died about 4-5 times getting there but it wasn't bad overall.

I started in Lakeshire...went through darkshire. Right at the edge of Darkshire and Stranglethorn I got PVP'd...went all the way south through Stranglethorn and got tagged by some tiger on the way. Crappy part about this is the cemetery is all the way back up northern part of strangle.

Anyway got to the bottom of Stranglethorn near Booty Bay. Jumped in the ocean and swam around to Booty Bay. There's a bunch of mages that are around 35-40ish...ya gotta swim. Once you hit Booty you'll see alot of Horde but there's guards so you're good!

I hopped on the boat and it took me to ratchet. Now your in horde territory. Gets a little tricky but for the most part I just stuck to the path with Track Humanoids on...shadowmelded when necessary. Finally you get to a Camp...go around the camp. And you're in Mulgore.

Once i got to Mulgore it was a piece of cake cause I was bigger then all the horde there. I walked around Golden Plains in Mulgore for about 30 minutes and BOOM there he was. Snagged him and hearthed out!

Well worth it! I really like the rake.

Good news and Bad news. I got "The Rake" last night on my second attempt. I was taming him and a Tauren shaman thought I was in trouble and helped me by killing him. DOH! Later that night a mage friend of mine was in Thunderbluff and gave a quick look to see if he respawned and there he was.....YES! I flew out to TB and got'em. Thank You, Althene!

The Bad news. His attack speed is 2.0! I had plans for this little guy. I was going have him grow big and strong on a diet of Dranei & Human mages. (No Gnomes. I'm not feeding my cat that....God only knows where they've been.) Sigh. Blizzard has $#%*ed hunters...again.

It's an annoying little bug isn't it? Basically, if your pet gets a speed buff, or a speed down, like a stun and sometimes even swimming in water, their pursuit speed will drop. Somebody pointed out a decent explanation that it's because pets like The Rake have higher than 100% pursuit speed. In this case, when they drop under 100% speed through say a Stun effect which slows thier run speed, when that effect wears off, the game returns them to 100% speed, instead of what they normally should have. The easy yet annoying fix is to dismiss your pet, then call him back. This will put the pursuit speed back to normal until the next annoying stun/speed debuff hits your pet.

Had my tauren hunter all over the zone area he's supposed to be seen looking for him. Nowhere to be seen. Saw and killed Arra'Chea once as a second prize, he respawned in the same spot, killed him a second time, he respawned in the same spot again and so I killed him again. No Arra'chea spawn.

However, checked the minimap and the Rake was right behind me. Abandoned poor old Ratkiller (prairie alpha) and grabbed him. Easy to tame.

Obviously I can't say that he and Arra'Chea share the same spawn list, but it's worth a checking out if you are in the area.

Have a 31 night elf hunter as well...have to say the Rake is faster on the ground than anything I've tamed before (various cats, wolves, bears and owls), though his ability to kill things quick I haven't been able to check yet.

Notes: His spawn time is no more then 2 hours. I had found him the first time but he was already being tamed, searched for about 2 hours till I found him. As far as I know I had no competition for him the second time, but it was a wide area so I could of very easilly missed a spawn. Thottbot posts his spawn as 1 hour, it's very possible.

Update: His attack speed is NOT the same as Durotar Tigers like the dude below me stated. Their attack speed is 1.30, The Rakes is 1.20.

I had killed Ghost Wolf before so I thought I wanted to tame him.
En rout, oh gee it's The Rake. Might as well. OH LOOK IT'S GHOST WOLF TIME TO ABANDON THE RAKE!
Turns out you can't tame Ghost Wolf.
So since, I've been hunting Rake. A lot. I've killed Arra'chea more than ten times. I've pinned his spawn point and at 1.5-2 minute a spawn.
Plus I know The Rake's spawn area like the back of my hand. Question is: even after killing upwards of a hundred wolfs/lions as well as several kodo families, how do I get The Rake to spawn for me?

Awesome pet at lv 10 decided to look for rare pets and this one seemed to be a really good one. He is definatly worth the 1-2-3 hour wait depending on your look. I also captured the tallstrider "Mazzranache" he was cute cause he was all pink but the rake will own him any day lol... Good luck finding him though...hopefully you dont get pwned by horde like I did.

I had The Rake from lvl 10 until 45, when I Tamed King B. I had both at lvl 45 and they had exact same stats except DPS /attack speed.

The Rake was at a 1.2 attack speed
King B was at 1.4 attack speed

King B had over a full 6 dps increase then The Rake and I have left The Rake in the stable since. King B, does however have buggy speed and you have to dismiss him once in a while and call him back out.

Hands down though from 10-44 he was an incredible pet.

Just got him 3 nights ago at level 24. Just keep circling the place where the map said he'll be, he'll show up. mine did after grinding the place for about 20 mins..He's an excellent pet, just need to level him up, and that can be a pain when your 12 levels above him, i'll try to take a SS then upload it asap..happy hunting!

I've been reading up a lot about elite/normal mob taming and current standing is that each class of mob has equal abilities under that class. So the only difference between The Rake and a regular cat is how it looks. Hope this doesn't break anyone's heart, but at least you don't have to spend countless hours anymore waiting for that spawn for it's abilities (now you can do it for it's looks I guess!)

I was a lev 33 dwarven hunter. I got bored of Takk so i walked into Mulgore. I was looking around, couldn've believe I saw the Rake and I abandoned takk. Then, i started taming. I lagged out when the tame was 2/3 of the way done. I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I logged back on and there he was, standing next to my side. After I made him happy, i went and started to bug Thunder Bluff. I kept shooting the guards to piss ppl off, it was so fun. I caught the rake on 12-29-06

Totally Lucky here. I did not even know about the Rake. I looked for Ghostpaw for 25 minutes, and never found him. (I did not know I could not tame him). I logged, put the kids to bed, came back to look for Ghost, and 1 minute later The Rake walks by. I tamed him and brought him up to level 13.

Got him at lvl 10. Just stun shot him at the very edge of your tame beast radius and start taming right after you get it off, it should hit the exact same time you start taming.

Btw, he only got half my health down.

Here's a suggestion, get the best hand-made food you can that you can eat at your lvl. This is for the stamina boost. Also, browse the AH for the highest rank Scroll of Protection you can use and buy it. The armor boost of this carries over, and still applies after the 100% armor reduction is taken.

Btw, I've used this strat on Mangeclaw also and got him without ever dying by using beerbasted boar ribs and Scroll of Protection I .

Anyway, gl. Taming.

P.S. It is strongly suggested to tame one of the prairie wolves for bite rank 2 while your there.
Mangeclaw or someone similar should be tamed at lvl 11 or such for Claw Rank 2. Had him equipped with claw rank 2 bite rank 2 and growl rank 2 at lvl 11... Needless to say, this pet is t3h pWnge ^_^.

Ok if your alli and want one its soo easy, just run into mulgore skirt the walls cheetah when needed and wham, tamed him within 10 mins of being in that moocow meadow.

If you need to find a creature with a unique name just type
/target (Creature Name) ex: /target The Rake
or make a macro so that you can just press it. Run around and wait for his name to pop up. As soon as he comes within view it will work. You might get other beasts selected but just ignore it and keep spamming the macro.

I got a level 58 Hunter and level 53 Druid to escort me to Mulgore. I was a level 11 Dwarf Hunter at the time. I found and tamed the Rake less than 5 minutes after I got there.

I am now a level 34 Hunter and I have no intention of ever taming and using any other pet with any regularity. The Rake has, in my opinion, the best combination of run and attack speed available. With the right placement of talent points in Beast Mastery, this is one of the best pets in the game...if not the best.

ok i was with my echeyakee pet when i thought; "hmm, i need more aspd(attack speed)" so i started looking and remember "the rake!" so i went and tame him and im leveling him (me lvl 26 he's lvl 11 so far) im enyoing him allready!

Well I just found the Rake but i think there might be a problem with him. He doesnt run fast at all. and he is pretty weak, (level 12, (10-13 damage). But he does have a 1.04 attack speed. I dont know whats going on. Do I have a different version of the Rake or what? it would be great if somebody helped me out here.

This pet's attack speed, dps, and movement speed is a lot better than that of any other pet I've seen. Great for any level 10 hunter...

And though he isn't amazing at tanking, he's great for PvP! His fast attacks are really effective for keeping their spell casts extremely slow.

The spawn time on The Rake is extremely slow, be patient and scout the area on the map above. Go enjoy yourself at the ThunderBluff elevators if you get bored!

PS: Are there any other pets similar to The Rake? Other Elite Beasts worth taming?

Hi, I've just tamed him this afternoon but I don't understand: we used to hunt for training & the first 3 mobs we've killed, I wasn't able to follow him when he was attacking.
But now, when we're running side by side & asking him to attack, he's just staying by my side & seems to run as fast as other cats ?

How can I take a look to his running/pursuit speed?
I'm disappointed about that!

I was waiting around Thunder Bluff on Spirestone server with my level 60 to look for the rake for my wife. I waited around for 3 hours. My wife was 20 seconds away when I found the rake. I told her to come tame him, she is a lvl 10 hunter, she start running over. A troll hunter lvl 18 named JimmykidPop came, I asked him not to kill the rake, offered him gold. He killed it and hearth. If your an alliance on Spirestone, kill Jimmykidpop tons and tons of times. Right now I want to buy a 2nd account for WOW so I can play alliance to kill JimmyKidPop. Worse yet is after trying to talk to him for 5 mintues, he never replied. He is now my new ememy. Death to Jimmykidpop!

Got him after about 15 minutes, time 10:15 pm pacific. An easy job for l 15 hunter even with a cougar joining the parade. Most disappointing was finding an elite called Ghost Wolf, just to the west who couldn't be tamed. Would have been great, what an awesome spirit! But, got a quest out of that encounter anyway.

What surprised me was that The Rake was smaller than the cougars in the area. Anyone have link describing the growth of pets as they level?

Location was just like described.

Got him last nite. He was easy with my lvl 32 NE hunter. Took about 1 hour to Spawn. Map is very accurate to his spawn area. I sat a distance and used eagle eye (love it), until I seen him. After using a number of pets, he is the quickest I've seen. Now to bring him up to par with my lvl =(. Named him Crac, cause Crac kills...lol

oh yeah, hope this helps...when i first hunted for him, i thought he looked like one of them savannah matriarchs or flatland cougars...so i kept looking for a lion that looks like a flatland cougar only with a different name, Then i saw a bad@ss looking "savannah patriarch"LOL and there he was! look for a lion with a mane! LOOK FOR A LION WITH A MANE!
got lucky i guess, named him Klav(for claw)

I know he is a bit boring to look at(normal lion color) but still, knowing the fact that you own the rake is pretty awesome..

just tamed the rake his coordinates are around 51,16 but he has a widepatrol corse so look around and i now have the 3 coolest pets echayakee humar and rake!

In addition to my last entry...

I stayed up until 1am, working up to level 10 and occasionally searching for The Rake....found Ghost Howl and decided to attempt taming him although I figured I wouldn't be able to...which was correct. Plus the fact that Ghost Howl was lvl 12, so I couldn't tame him anyway because he was a higher lvl than me. He killed me with a little help from a Flatland Lion-of some sort.

As I ran back to my body, The Rake spawned in front of me! I was so excited to finally see him, that I ressurected and started taming him...completely forgetting that my life was at about half. Almost tamed him, then died, wondering how I could have been such a noob!

Second time running back to my body, when I rez'd, I couldn't find him. After some tracking, I got him at 50,20...then went to tame Mazzranache...just to get all the rare mobs I could, in Mulgore. =)

i was looking for him on my 38 hunter and i was just fighting random mobs i did explosive trap, and it hit the rake. :( Needless to say i felt like a dumbass.... then shortly after i had to run from a bunch of horde coming from Thunder Bluff. In my late teens as a hunter I started looking for a pet that would be unique and have a special ability. I had read somewhere that The Rake has 1.2 damage per second, so I purposefully sought out this mob (thanks to Allakhazam). His attack speed is unrivaled in most pets and at least on my server (Feathermoon) you don't see very many people with him. Once you get him up to your level range he's lethal. His attacks are so fast. The damage isn't huge, but the attack rate gives casters big problems when they're trying to cast spells. He's faster than the majority of tamable pets and I've read on the forums that he can even outrun a steed. You click attack and he's right there laying into your target. This is one of the best pets in the game, in my opinion. If you want speed The Rake can't be beat. I suggest getting him as soon as you can near his level so you don't have the pain of leveling him up.

I just tamed him yesterday after waiting two long hours for Humar to show up. He was right where the map said he would be and i didnt have to wait for him to respawn. His attack speed and dps is way worth the run to thunderbluff. =)

OnceI hit lvl 10 I did the hunter quest then headed right over to TB. Went Noth/West from Red Rocks and saw him with another cat...first time I tried I pulled both so I ran away to lose agro. I had him Hunter Marked so i could see him again. Ran back there he was...Concussive Shot and tame! got him December 4th 2006, at 8:19 Server Time on Eonar! Great Tank once he has growl...friend got Mazz and we had pet duel Rake one by a long shot! named him Erkoro.

Got a prairie wolf as a temporary pet and ran around the area on the map for about 10 or 15 minutes. Saw The Rake on my beast tracking spot, dismissed Pete(god rest his soul) and got the rake ^_^ .

I'm a night elf hunter. Its very easy, just spend the cash for a vendor suit of leather armor, and its good enough to carry you through.

Explosive shot him, (the 4 sec 50% thing) then start the taming. I got him with 1/2 my health left.

Just got him yesterday. I am very impressed. I tamed him at 26...NE hunter. I just killed 100s of raptors outside of menthil harbor rested. in the next 2 days i lvled twice and he got to lvl 23. So easy. I just cant wait until he is my same lvl to see his full potential. Next im off to get a white turtle in thousand needles =D tank pet.

I followed tigerstealth's methode of cleaning out the area and it was about 15< min before he appeared. Im gessing that he's a lottery spawn like lizzy or the emperor from FFXI.

The Rake Attack speed = Attack speed of Durotar Tiger (Echo Isles near Sen'jin).
But running speed is better :) He intercept enemies much faster.

Got the rake after 5 mins of searchng lol. Unfortunately im lvl 31 :( and im not sure whether I should level him up to take full advantage of spirit bond (more hits = more health) or keep using my current pet, Sarkoth, the red and black scorpion from the valley of trials.

He is pretty fast, but unlike Sarkoth, he's BORING. Just a plain, old lion :(

He is fast though, adn Sarkoth is so fast he ends up despawning all the time.

Btw, how come you get the fastest pet in the game and it still trails behind you when you run with aspect of the cheetah?

I dont think the rake is that good. i caught him, nice attack speed but damage is really slow to the damage per second just about equals a snow leopard of the same level. Also, his health when used with natural stamina is less than a tamed snow leopard of same level also, so i dunno wat so good about him.

I got the Rake today when I tamed it the attack speed is set to a generic setting of 2.0 per sec it looks like hes attacking faster but the numbers rolling of the opponent is the same speed as a regular cat which I guess is now Standerd for all cats which sucks cause if this is the same for all pets theres no reson to tame any rare pets

The one thing I hate about Blizzerd is that there trying so hard to keep the game in such perfect ballance that they eliminate all the things that make a serious player truly unique

When I was doing the red rocks quest, I was attacked by a flatland cougar. As soon as I had killed it, the Rake came out of nowhere and attacked me. I was getting low on health, so I strafed to the side and ran away, but the rake was much faster. "Whoa," I thought, "I WANT THAT!" After I ressurected, I ran back to find my corpse, hoping the Rake would still be there. A few minutes after abandoning my plainstrider, with whom I had a mutual hatred, I found the Rake and tamed him. I haven't named him yet - I can't think of anything appropriate. He's a very good fighter and very good at running down fleeing mobs. He's lvl 14 now and at loyalty level 6 (best friend).

my advice would be use a macro "/target the rake" that way as soon as you're anywhere near him his portrait will show up in the top left of the screen, then smack on a hunters mark and he will appear on your radar (alone so u wont have to check millions of dots) as well as having a nice bouncing arrow over him if u need anymore help. Took me about 10 seconds to find him and as soon as i had finished pleading with 2 taurens not to kill him it was an easy capture.

This pet is amazing. When I was about level 31 my Night Elf hunter went to tame this pet after I heard so much about it. Since it's a level 10 pet it took a very long time until it got around my level but it was worth every second of labor. This pet is an amazing creature, it's a level 10 elite lion (gold pelt, not black). It's attack speed is awesome, 1.2. It can indeed outrun a mount. A must have for all hunters, and easily one of the best pets.

Remember when you are in the Rake's general area you can also find himeasier by typing /target the rake all the time and casting hunters mak if you get a lock, that way hel show on your map and you can run over to him, generally easier than checking 20 or 30 red dots a minimap screen.

The Rake is a Level 10 elite (not 12) and his attack speed is 1.2, not 1.04. I'm not sure what you have: maybe a Prowler? (Does it have a mane?)

Two days ago spent untold hours driving my hunter to Mulgore and searching for The Rake. I died several times... or more on the way there, so my weapon went red, as did much of my armor. When my ax was about to go red, I gated home.

Went back last night. Died fewer times on the way there - and I started hunting the zone. Maybe an hour or two - and there he was! Was just high enough lvl to tame him, and I ran over and showed a Hoard player - I was so excite. She attacked me, so The Rake and I killed her - and we gated home.

He's an awesome pet. I don't think I'll ever get rid of him - I'd pay the 5g to keep him in an extra stall slot. Thanks to all for the advice!

(I saw him in the NW section of the "shaded" area of his spawn on the map here - this map is accurate)

Yep, I ran my little level 18 Alliance booty all the way there to get him, pretty hard with lousy PvP Honor system. If I were you, run around in a big circle around the spawn area with Track Beast on, then just move over the dots till you see The Rake on one, and there he is. Took me about 5 mins to find him this way. I got a pic of him, but don't know how to submit it on here :-(

oh, so that is what i killed on that raid into n00b land.
sounds like a decent animal, shame my druid could only find a use for it's skin, which certainly helped me, his skin went into a nice tunic for an alt :p

While trying to tame The Rake, my duo partner would get to the end of taming, and then Rake would start attacking me (shaman). We did this twice in a row, and finally had to kill Rake as his friends were coming to help him...

Anyone see this behavior before?

This cat is like any other cat. There is nothing special about him other then his skin and I am sure you could get that some place else. Maybe pets use to be better , faster, or stronger. now it's all about the skin. I mean some have skills when you tame them. But, Pft... really... the great pet debate can end any time now.

The Rake has an estimated respawn time of 30 min MAX, unsure of the correct timing.

I was using my Night Elf Hunter in Classic to find him. He's more or less found in the same spots as the markers are on that map, but he blends in too well with the normal mobs. Its best to use a macro with the text:
/target The Rake

BEWARE OF HORDE MEMBERS! They don't know/care if you're trying to grab Rake. Its best to come here during late ours on your server ( 2am NA for me ) and just hope a group of friends isn't hunting you down. Happened to me, had to wait for them to quit corpse-camping me. If you're a female character, or even just a gnome/dwarf, the funny/fun Horde members could possibly spare your life if you offer them sexy dancing ( Sexy Dancing works better with Female Night Elves ), otherwise noobs/serious players will wipe you no problem. If you expect to run a lot, set up a macro to yell in chat. Hopefully they look down to see what you typed, but half the time they wont even check it.

If needed, I could type up a guide to safely travel to him with some key points to it. Just an offer.

Safe travels, DON'T FORGET TO PACK MEAT FOR HIM!

Tamed during classic. I farmed the mobs in the area leveling my skinning and he appeard after 30minutes or so.

1.2 Speed. Fastest until 20ish.

I reccomend everyone get this if they can.

TLDR; The Rake is still there in Classic (1.12), with his 1.20 attack speed. Lvl 10, rare mob, spammed macro (read KhadgarJem's excellent green post here on all details.) He showed up the first time I looked for him, next to the horde city walls, near the outside of the map locations listed above.

(Verify attack speed of any pet by mousing over Damage/Damage #'s on your Pet tab in the Character sheet ("c"))

On my troll hunter, waiting for her to spawn, and POP, there she is.
I start the taming process. Along come two players, Bawlsweat and Vachemoomoo-They proceed to kill her as I am taming her.
Afterwards they said, And I quote, "If we can't have it no one can. We called dibs."
So far in Classic Wow, everyone has been nice, courteous, drive by buffs constantly, etc... This is my first run in with certifiable a-holes.

Spawns at 53.4,17.0 according to questie. Spawn timer is 30 mins. Killed at 6:00 and tamed at 6:30. He walks south from the spawn point but path varies, he can be a bit east toward Thunder Bluff or directly south from spawn.

Both times I found him he was due East of the northeast rise of Thunder Bluff.

Set a macro: /target The Rake, bind it to a button and spam it.
