What I am curious about is if these residue's are gatherable beyond the 8 you need every day.
Because it could be a real pain to grind for example 30 nodes to get 8 of these every day.

If these are quest items, does it mean that people who aren't skinners, herbalists, or miners can't obtain them? Because if that's a case, it's potentially pointless to make it a daily quest.

If you can't stockpile them, then you get a massive demand for it.

A massive demand means exorbitant amounts of gold to buy.

If you're going to buy the darn quest item, then why do the daily anyways other than the reputation with the SSO? (Oh and by the way, does anyone know how much rep you get exactly for this quest?) This is potentially unfair to those whose professions are enchanting/tailoring/jewelcrafting, particularly those who are enchanting/tailoring.

I got one off an adamantite ore in Blade's Edge and I believe I got 2 off of the manaberries for the daily cooking quest - either that or the cats around Mid eco-dome.

I noticed that I sometimes got the residue on the last "tap" of the mine, not just the first. This leads me to believe, though it hasn't happened yet, that you could possibly get 2 residues off 1 vein.

For miners, I would suggest simply mining fel iron nodes in Hellfire after you finish up with the dailies on Kil'jaeden's throne. I say this because not only are they extremely easy to find (not to mention largely ignored) but appear to have the same drop rate as adamantium ore, which unless you're actively searching it out for money it causes the quest to go by much slower due to its high demand.

PS, you can get these on the Isle of Quel'danas also, despite it saying Outland only...primarily because they have Outland ore there. Got mine from just doing the Shattered Sun dailies, didn't need to take a single detour.

First day trying this quest on the live server, I have farmed about 3 stacks of felweed and another 3 stacks of miscellaneous herbs, and have 6/8 nether residues...anyone else having them barely drop..I've been at this quest all day since the server went live :s

I gathered these quite quick and easy... If you have Mining as a profession, you are in luck. I spent like 20 minutes in Nagrand farming all my known vein spots and gathered them all...

I found out that "Fel Iron" veins give out the most ammount of the "Nether Residue" i have gotten 3 of them from a single vein... I got lucky and found a Khlorium vein over by the Twilight area and it did not give out a Nether Residue. Adamanite veins gave out 1 or none, but the fel iron gave me 3 and another vein gave me 2...

As a herbalist I must say this quest is pain in the ass... I was on it pretty much whole day... it felt for my like higher herbs have MUCH better chance to get your residue

For skinners i suggest the phaze hunters just out side of area 52, they drop motes of mana, u can skin them and you can get the residue. Just fantastic.

They come from Outland-level herbs. Also, I picked the herbs in the Eco-Domes (Netherstorm) and of the few that are in each dome, they all dropped the residue. Oddly enough, I got NO residue whatsoever from the Netherbloom (though said herbs were outside the domes, but I think that's just coincidence).

It took me over an hour to farm them. I seemed to have better luck with terocone in Terokkar Forest. I must have picked at least three stacks of felweed but only one produced the residue. I did get one off a dreaming glory. But the terocone did seem to have the higher drop rate, though still very low (took picking two stacks to get six residues).

I'm skinning and herbalism. Since mobs that can be skinned are plentiful, this quest is far easier to do as a skinner than a miner or herbalist. I also found the drop rate to be higher from skinning then herbs. Took about 20 kills to get the 8 residue (40%).

Also of note is this is an excellent quest to pick up at the start of the day and work on while you do other stuff, as opposed to specifically heading out to complete it.

I had the best luck for herbalism while doing the Ogri'la dailies. I collected 7 off of Nightmare Vine and 1 off of the Dreaming Glory. I had the quest done in less than 10 mins.

My main (herbalist) has collected residues from Mana Thistles found on the Isle of Quel'Danas. I'd assume that the adamantite ore veins found there can also drop residue. (I can't think of anything there that you're able to skin, but maybe I'm forgetting something?)

In general, it seems the higher the skill needed to pick the herb, the greater the chance of it dropping a Nether Residue. Mana Thistle, Netherbloom, and Nightmare Vine all drop it every 2 or 3 nodes I collect, while Felweed and Dreaming Glory often take 8 or 10 nodes to drop a single residue.

Well, I don't know if I'm lucky or not, but...

The Mana Thistles on the Isle of Quel'Danas had a much higher chance to drop a nether residue than any of the Outland herbs. The droprate was about 1/3 for me. Worth a shot.

Skinners, there is only one, time efficient, profitable way here to make money and get good drops while your doing the quest. Kill Clefthoof Bulls. You get Clefthoof meat for cooking quests, the usual leather drops and Thick Clefthoof leather, which sells for very good gold. Go to the usual spot north center of the map (48,30) and when your done, do the daily fishing quest at Skysong Lake, just to the east.

First time doing it on my hunter (miner). I just flew around HFP mining fel iron. I got 8 residue in in 27 fel iron ore. That's almost a 30% drop rate. I was at 3 in 17, but then got 4 from the next 5 ore I mined in just 2 veins. I also tried mining the rock elemntal guys in western HFP (the ones you can mine after they die). I did 4 with no drop, so I quit trying based on previous comments from the herbalists with Boglords. So, moral of the story is...

1 vein can yield multiple residue
~30% drop rate for a miner, based on a small sample
No proof that you can get the residue from gatherable mobs

On my mainchar i have mining and herbalism. And i wouldnt recommend doing this quest to anyone, especially not if you're on a high populated server as i am.

Purely this quest took me twice as long then finishing all other dailys. If you persist on doing this quest though, i'd advice doing it with mining if possible ( 1 residu in 2-3mines). Herbalism droprate seems to be beyond low (1 residu in 10-15 herbs).

Wish they'd let them drop on the netherwing ledge, this would surely make this quest a fast moneymaker, though as it is at the moment only thing its good for is the rep if you want it (like i do :) )

HERBALISTS: This quest sucks!! I know all of you are about ready to give up. DON"T GIVE UP! Instead go to Netherstrom and farm there. 30min for 8 residue! Approx 50% drop rate. 3 days in a row and still the same drop rate. For what ever the reason everyother zone sucks. I hope this helps.

I had this quest in my log last night while doing Zul'aman. I recieved all 8 residues from the lynx's skinned within the instance. ote, this was from patch 2.4, the night before 2.4.1.

For herbers, dont very this as a must do daily. Just get the quest, herb when you would normally herb and you will finish the quest at some point, then you get an extra 16g and a rev pot.

I have to mine a lot of ore (60+) to get the 8 nether residues.

I have gotten 2 nether residues from one fel iron deposit in BEM (the long canyon with all the ogres in it) once, so it can happen. I guess it is a small chance per tap?

It's very tedious, but I'm mining anyways...

(I do wish the netherwing items (nethercite etc) had a chance to drop these (kill 2 birds with one stone...).)

OK, I may be completely wrong but I'm getting the distinct impression that the likelihood of a drop is at least partially based off the skill required to skin/herb/mine.

I've been doing this quest every day since 2.4 came out on three different toons - a skinner, a herbalist & a miner.

The skinner rarely gets a drop on 60 mobs (require 300 skill to skin), about a 25% droprate on 65's (require 325) and about a 50% droprate from 70 mobs (350 skill).

I've found I rarely get a drop out of Fel Iron (req 300 skill) on my miner, but will generally get at least one drop out of Adamantite Ore (req 325) & quite frequently get two out of Rich Admantite (req 350) - on a side note, my record is 5 residue and a blue gem out of one rich adamantite node (and then the server crashed.. lol).

Ditto for the herbalist when comparing Fel Weed (300) to Netherbloom (350).

Hypothesis aside, of all the professions this is definitely most annoying for herbalists... skinners can kill things quickly & on demand (the quest is virtually free money/rep for skinners), miners get somewhere between 2 & 6 chances of getting a drop for every node they find (given the competition for nodes it's not brilliant, but not bad)... whereas herbalists only get one chance for every node they find (and maybe it's just my server, but there are an awful lot of herbalists farming the 'high end' herbs out there...).

First of all,
You can loot them from herbs which are included with outlands exp. This means you can loot them from Azeroth too. Isle of Quel'Danas for example, from Mana Thistles.

I looted Nether Residue mostly from Terokkar Forest herbing Terocones. But the problem is drop rate seems to chage a lot. This morning right before getting out I herbed 10 herbs in Terokkar and got 7 Nether Residue, then it stoped dropping...

Two days before I looted 4 of them so quickle then all night I herbed but none droped...none! So this drop rate might have a function maybe. More people looting Nether Residue might drop your drop maybe. Just an theory, it may suck but cant come with a better idea:p

A tip for rogues who mine... Stealth farm Underbog on normal mode so you dont have to run all over outland to get your residue. I usually get muliple residue from each node and there are 2 in the instance if yo know how to get past the invis detecting mobs. Mine the nodes and reset, picking up hibiscus along the way for some extra spending money.

It's probably been mentioned a few times, but this quest is ridiculously easy for skinners. Personally, I've been picking it up on my way to do Netherwing dailies - I tend to start by gathering the Fel Glands for the poison mutton quest first, and I usually have 8/8 residue by the time I have all 12 Fel Glands. ^^

If you're just trying to do this quest and nothing else, I could imagine having it done in 5-10 minutes by heading over to Nagrand and killing Talbuks near Skysong Lake.

You can do this in a raid group (I've had them from skins in Eye), along with ANY skinnable mob in Outlands, that also includes the level 60 push... I mean pigs. *hint hint*

anyone know if the quest item drops from Glowcap in Zangarmarsh for herbalists? I'm thinking probably not, but worth a shot to see if anyone else has any experience. It's "technically" an Outland plant, though since it's not herbed the same way and anyone can pick Glowcap/not limited to herbalists, I'm inclined to think not.

I've had some good luck, but I think it's because I don't focus on this quest as my main objective or set aside time to *just* do this quest. I grab it first of the day along with my other dailies from Shatt, then go and do all of the other dailies. I just happen to herb everything I see on the way to and from all of the other dailies and by the end of my long list of quests, I've managed to finish this one just by doing what I'd normally be doing anyway, herbing everything I see as I quest. good luck! <3

It seems the drop rate from mining has increased substantially since patch 2.4.2. I can now easily get all 8 residue from 2-3 nodes whereas before it would take like 12-15 nodes.

Well I went to Nagrand to skin and the pond worked out quite well for me. The Talbuk's especially drop the essence....but I was able to get it off everything in the area. Coords are 65,72. I spent 20 mins there since I wanted to farm anyway and walked away with all the essence I needed, 2 stacks of Knothide Leather and 5 pieces of Thick Clefthoof Leather.....not to mention a few Motes of Earth from the random elemental.

All herbs and mineral nodes on the Isle of Quel'Danas drop the Residue. If you are a miner, it is very easy to obtain the Nether Residue, as 2 to 3 of them will drop from a single Rich Adamantite node, and usually 1 or 2 drop from Adamantite, Khorium, and Fel Iron nodes. NETHERCITE NODES DO NOT DROP THE NETHER RESIDUE! Drop rate is roughly 75% to get at least 1 residue per node.

Herbalists have a similar drop rate, but can only get 1 per herb.

Skinners are roughly the same 75% rate, but again can only get 1 per skin.

An interesting thing I have noticed is that if I don't have my Track Herbs active that the plants with Nether Residue will sparkle while ones without residue will not. Very helpful if you find a herb that would require you to kill many mobs, as you can deactivate the tracking and see if it is worth it.

I found them in the dome and the storm sphere, and around the area. They were mainly in felweed and netherbloom. took me less than 1 hour. Most of the time was spent flying.

**EXPLOIT FOUND**

This works best for miners but may also work for other gathering skills (havent tested others yet).
Doing this will garuntee that you get a nether residue everytime.

Start mining the node and before you complete the mining cast, move and interupt it. Do this four times (4) in a row then actually finish mining on the fifth (5) time.

Ive gotten all 8 on just one rich adamantite vein, works every time so far!
Please post if you find this works with other gathering skills.

Well.. i finished the q in like 2 hours.. the drop was good in shadowmoon (i have herbalism) almost from every plant droped the nether residue.. think i was lucky ^^

I agree with some of the other posters here. I hope Blizz ups the consistency of the drops, I've done 5-6 nodes now in Shadowmoon, including a Khorium and not a single one. Ridiculous.

It's been taking me 2-3 nights of playing to complete this one. The last two nights I haven't had a drop with any of the ore I have mined. I even abandonded the quest and picked it up again.

got one from adamantine deposit, and te rest off of beasts. I guess just gather them by skinning mining/ picking herbs and killing things as you go about the rest of your dailies. :)

tried herbalizing in every zone - best drop rate so far has been Isle of Quel'Danas (almost all off nightmare vine) but still VERY low percentage - have quest for 3 days so far and still not complete!

a skinner should combine this with "discovering your roots".

you have to kill ravagers to get to the roots and you usually skin enough to complete the both quests

My husband's priest was having a hard time getting his with herbilism. So when he was out-of-game doing something else, I flew his priest around. Zangermarsh is NOT the place to go. I went there since there are alot of herbs. I did get alot of plant parts and half-filled his (default) backpack with various herbs but I didn't get one! nether residue.

Trying the different zones (other than new land that's over-run with players), I found BEM to be not too bad. My husband prefer's SMV, as someone else also suggested.

I'm a miner - the best place I have found is SMV with HP being a close second, and then TF. There have been a couple of times I didn't get it finished in one day (those were work days when I have less than 4 hours to play and too many dailies => is that possible? LOL)

It does not matter what kind of ore it is - drop rate seems to be about the same = usually 3-5 mines without any residue and then I will get lucky and get 2 residues from a single deposit, and then 2-3 mines without anything, then get 1 residue. /shrug

My little warlock alt just LOVES me doing this quest = she prospects all the ore I don't need. For the ores I DO need, I've been sending them to younger guildies for them to smelt to help raise their mining skill.

I don't know if they changed the drop rate in the last patch or that I just had a lucky day, but seeing this result I don't really think it's THAT bad for a miner.

While doing my dailies I decided that instead of taking the FP from Shat to Allerian Stronghold I just use my own flying mount and fly around alongside the north and east border of Shadowmoon Valley to get to the Stronghold.
On my way (and yes it was early) I found numerous mines that gave me the following just on that short trip:

6 Nether Residue
10 Fel Iron Ore
3 Adamantite Ore
7 Khorium Ore (Lucky me to see 2 of those mines on the way)
5 Motes of Fire
7 Motes of Earth

And that in just 5 to 10 minutes (haven't really been timing it) at around 8.30 AM servertime.

The blizzard game designer who decided to include miners in this quest needs to have the holy bejesus kicked out of him/her. Do yourself a favor if you are a miner, don't do this quest. It's not worth the aggravation. Easily the WORST drop rate i've ever seen in the game

Anyone seen this drop from skinning any of the mobs in Netherwing mines? Finished the flayer/ravager daily there, skinned everything , but never saw this drop. Wondering if the drop rate is really low or if these simply don't drop it.

This stuff has an insanely low drop rate. I mined several veins and only got two. This takes a lot longer then most dailies. Guess you're right. Best thing to do is just causally collect it while doing other stuff. Going after this specifically will drive you insane.

Droprate off herbs is terrible---got 2 out of 16 herb harvests so far--even tried the forest walkers in Terrokar but went 0 for 6.Wish you could at least get some off the herb beasts lol.If anyone gets 1 off the herb beasts please pst.

I do not agree. Taking the clue from Sairisha (further down) I quickly flew to the Zangarmarsh (close to the quest giver, after all). Took me around 10 minutes to gather enough Young Sporebats (level 60-61) and Marshfang Rippers/Slicers (level 60-61) to get a lot of grey trash, some knothide/knothide scraps and the required 8 residue.

According to my little survey the chance for a residue drop was a lot higher on the yellow critters and higher again on the level 60 ones.

So, miners? Try fel iron and mines found near shattrath? Herbalists? Again, the simplest/lowest herb you can find and those close to shattrath?

I am looking forward to hearing your results.

The drop rate on the residue wasn't too bad for me when done with skinning. Got 3 in a row and it took about 20 animals total in Nagrand to get the 8 residue I needed. Apparently any animal in Nagrand can have this when skinned.

Update:after gettin only 4 drops in about 25 herb harvests(3 felweed 1 terocone)I went to the Barrier Hills in Terrokar and got 4 in 4 harvests off the mana thistles--maybe the higher lvl. herbs drop much better(ya think?)lol

Okay for a miner this is a really annoying daily to do. the drop rate of this residue is so low. I hit up a lot of spots all over outland that are known as good node farming areas and all of them help me mine ore but dont help me complete this quest. I am currently at 5 peices of 8 and this is my second day farming the damn thing. in total i have spent about 4 hours and mined almost half a bags worth (14 slot) of ore... at this time i would rather just AH the ore and call it a day because the worth of turning in this quest isnt much compaired to the amount avail. through pure ore selling or prospecting.

The troops of the Shattered Sun Offensive will need every advantage they can get to beat back the allies of Kil'Jaeden. My colleagues in Stormwind have created oils which will strengthen the blades and armor of our troops.

The key ingredient, nether residue, pervades Outland -- if you know where to look. Any master herbalist, skinner, or miner who knows the signs can gather it while plying <his/her> trade. Those herbs, ores, and beasts native to Outland may all bear the residue.
