Kibler Interview - Secret Paladin is Fine, What Hearthstone Needs, & Casting HWC
Despite his incredibly busy schedule, Brian Kibler took some time to talk with us at BlizzCon regarding the current state of Hearthstone, his thoughts on some of the decks out there, and exactly how amazing casting in front of the BlizzCon crowd was. Having previously designed card games, made the Magic: The Gathering Hall of Fame, and now being a full time caster and
streamer
, he has an extensive knowledge base to draw from regarding some of the challenges facing Hearthstone.
How do you think things are doing now that has been nerfed?
I think that the Warsong Commander change is a very good one. Warsong Commander is just fundamentally a problematic card the kind of gameplay that it encourages. I think the biggest problem that Hearthstone is facing now is not one of individual cards, but sort of a systemic thing. The fact that it lets you introduce more and more powerful cards the cards that you are going to play don’t change that often.
We can see people complaining about Secret Paladin in particular, but it’s not a symptom of Secret Paladin and individual cards, it's the fact that people play against the same sort of decks on a regular basis. It’s difficult to keep up with making enough cards that are interesting and powerful enough that players will want to put them in their decks when the same cards that have existed for so long are still around.
Hearthstone
Kripparrian Interview - Hearthstone Disconnect, Secret Paladin Problems, & LoE Excitement
At BlizzCon we had a chance to sit down and talk with TSM's Kripparrian regarding the convention, the state of Hearthstone, and the upcoming League of Explorers adventure! He's one of the most popular Hearthstone streamers on
Twitch
, routinely puts out helpful content on his
YouTube channel
, and despite all this has only made Legend once. Regardless, his opinions have always been among the loudest in the community and he may have been one of the driving forces behind Tavern Brawls.
How do you think Hearthstone is now that has been nerfed?
So the Warsong Commander was nerfed. I think people agree that the deck was overpowered, but what the deck was accomplishing was keeping down aggressive decks and it’s very hard to do that in Hearthstone.
It seems like the only thing that keeps down aggressive decks is combo decks, at the point at which they are overpowered. So it seems like Blizzard really loves to kill every combo deck that’s any good, ever. And unfortunately right now it’s not that there are just a lot of aggro decks, there are a lot of aggro decks that are really easy to play and extremely effective, particularly the Secret Paladin. And I think that combination is really what is the problem.
Blizzard kind of avoided nerfing Grim Patron Warrior even though it was such a powerful deck because they said, “Well, people on ladder don’t have a very high win rate and it’s really hard to play.” But if you take the opposite of that it’s literally Mysterious Challenger Paladin: it’s super easy to play and has an extremely high win rate. So by their own definition this deck shouldn’t really be out there. But still in general I think we need more tools to combat aggro decks.

BlizzCon 2015 - Heroes of the Storm Battlegrounds Panel
Battleground Goals
There are a couple of core goals for battlegrounds in Heroes of the Storm. A battleground must eventually end and create conflict.
On battlegrounds, they want to make sure that there are objectives to fight over and if you succeed, you get a good reward.
For example, on Sky Temple, the large size of the map allows many skirmishes because of the time transitioning between lanes. The objective of Skye Temple causes large fights.

BlizzCon 2015 - Hearthstone World Championship Recap
The 2015 Hearthstone World Championships are coming to a conclusion and a new World Champion will be crowned today! The finals were set to start at 2:00 PM PST but with how close the two series have been today, we're a good bit behind schedule. While you wait, here's our recap of the action at BlizzCon thus far!
Quarterfinals
Thijs vs. Kranich
Thijs continued his hot streak, properly picking his decks as he and Kranich traded match after match. The only player in this year’s Championship that also competed at BlizzCon last year, Kranich went down as his Midrange Hunter failed to find its footing. This was particularly surprising because Thijs was quick to express his intense desire to avoid playing his Patron Warrior into a Midrange Hunter.
Ostkaka vs. Pinpingho
Pinpingho, the Shaman himself from Taiwan couldn’t find a win with his Midrange Druid in the first two matches and as a result found himself behind from the start. Luckily his Hybrid Hunter was quick enough to beat Ostkaka’s Oil Rogue, but the same couldn’t be said for his staple Shaman deck.
DieMeng vs. Kno
The only other Shaman player in the tournament, China’s DieMeng, found himself hamstrung by the Midrange decks of Kno. Though he did manage to win the Secret Paladin vs. Midrange Paladin matchup, he struggled to find wins with his Face Hunter deck that just couldn’t get going thanks to Kno’s board clears and control.
Zoro vs. Hotform
The days matches concluded with North America’s lone remaining hope, Hotform, taking on Zoro. The former took a quick win as Zoro’s Secret Paladin struggled to find the right draws. However, Zoro rebounded with two great matches that just barely remained in his favor throughout, leaving Hotform with little choice but to trade board control for face damage. Much like our other Chinese player, Zoro just couldn’t close out a win with his Face Hunter.

Liveblog
My question is about Alleria. Her group never got to see that the Orcs weren't as evil as everyone thought, does that mean they will be part of the factions conflict?
No. But when we finally discover them in Legion, the way you view WoW will change. Nothing to do with that, but amazing stuff is in store.
Is there any hope of sub races, such as Taunka or Dark Iron Dwarves being playable in the future?
There were tens of thousands of votes for this one, I'll take it. So our mission is to sell the class and the race--the fantasy. So the easy answer is yes, we'd love to do it. But the more difficult answer is how will we do it? We'll be working on it.

BlizzCon 2015 - Hearthstone: Fireside Chat Panel Recap
he Hearthstone design team hosted its final BlizzCon 2015 panel and discussing how Tavern Brawls come to be and answering a few rounds of Q&A
Missed the panel? Here's everything that happened:
Liveblog 2015
9:45
The panel will be starting shortly.
10:00
Should be starting any time now.
10:06
Mike Donais, Senior Game Designer takes the stage.
10:07
First design goal of Tavern Brawls was to be weekly, to give players more content to chew through between expansions/adventures.
10:10
Next goal was variety, to try new things and improve them over time.
10:11
Donais is now breaking down the three different types of Brawls: build your own deck, pick a class, and prebuilt.
10:12
Most of this information has been talked about before, players that like to innovate like to build decks, pick a class is very replayable since it's random, and premade decks give you access to cards you may not own.
10:15
Co-op Tavern Brawl now being talked about. It didn't make sense for Blizzard to completely rearrange the UI and players to have them both on one side of the field.
10:17
Once Ben Brode realized they could just use a minion that swapped sides, it allowed them to push out co-op a lot sooner than before.
10:19
This came with a ton of challenges, how do you make Mechazod stand out? Where do you put him on the board?
10:20
How do you build decks that are actually challenging? Blizzard chose cards that promoted cooperation and communication.
10:22
The most popular brawl is Randomonium, where you get a random deck and the card costs are randomized each turn.
10:24
More new brawls and types of brawls are coming soon.
10:25
Nefarian and Ragnaros will be returning, the former will have one less mana crystal than before. Should help things be more balanced.
10:26
The Summoning Stone exists because of The Great Summoner Competition brawl.
10:27
As you may remember, Captain Blackheart's Treasure was set to be a preview of the upcoming Discover keyword.
10:28
Captain Blackheart's Treasure will return in about three weeks.
