While under the influence of this potion, you seem to sometimes get Tiny Treasure Chest as extra loot. The chest i just opened contained 4g17s and 8 Embersilk Cloth.

EDIT: Second chest i looted contained 4g17s and 8 cloth again, third chest 2g83s and no cloth.
I was was farming lvl 83 Scion of Al'akir in Uldum for Volatile Air.

The Potion of Treasure Finding will sometimes reward you with an extra Tiny Treasure Chest when you loot a monster, the chest contains 3-5 Gold, has a 75% chance to contain 8-15 Embersilk Cloth, and a 15% chance to contain a Volatile element.

Every (roughly) 7 chests will award 1 Volitile element, 60 Embersilk Cloth, and 28 Gold.
The question is... what is the drop rate of the chests?

We can do some simple napkin math to see if this is worth doing:

Based on the information(as of November 26th, 2010) that a Tiny Treasure Chest has:

3-5 Gold
75% chance to contain 8-15 Embersilk Cloth
15% chance to contain a single Volatile Element

We can also get the AVERAGE AMOUNT of chests per potion(C) using:

Dc = Drop rate of Chest(As a decimal, currently unknown.)
Kr = Creatures killed/Hour

C = Kr*Dc

Now to get the VALUE of the average amount of chests per potion(V) we use:

G = Average gold per chest. G = 4.
nEC = Average Embersilk Cloth per chest. EC = (0.75)x = 8.625
vEC = AH Value of an Embersilk Cloth
nVOL = Average Volatiles per chest. VOL = 0.15
vVOL = Average AH Value of one of all droppable Volatiles

V = G + nEC*vEC + nVOL*vVOL
= 4 + 8.625*vEC + 0.15*vVOL

So basically C * V is the total value of all extra items/gold received during one potion use.

Now to get the TOTAL COST(cPOT) per Potion of Tresure Finding.

Requirements:

vCIN = Average AH Value of a Cinderbloom.
vSV = Average AH Value of a Stormvine.
vHB = Average AH Value of a Heartblossom.
vWT = Average AH Value of a Whiptail.

cPOT = 8*vCIN + 4*vSV + 8*vHB + 4*vWT + 0.01

Here is the obligatory big formula:

Net Profit/Loss per Potion
= (C*V)-cPOT
= (Kr*Dc)*(G + nEC*vEC + nVOL*vVOL) - (8*vCIN + 4*vSV + 8*vHB + 4*vWT + 0.01)

If C*V>cPOT then you are making (C*V)-cPOT gold per potion.
If C*V<cPOT then you are losing cPOT-(C*V) gold per potion.

TLDR - Lots of variables, and it will take some research to figure out if this is worth doing.
To people asking whats the point? Well once I know the drop rate I can just fill it in and improve the formula!

I tried it at Nordrassil in Hyjal on the elementals that keep respawning (I was missing a couple of volatile earth).

That's a nice place to use this potion as you can kill non stop and on a PVP server guards can always help against some gankers, especially early in Cataclysm.

So after 1 hours of intense killing I got about 13 chests. I ended up with almost 3 stacks of cloth and 8 volatile air.

60 minutes worth of farming Scions of Al'Akir with this potion netted me 8 Tiny Treasure Chests after exactly 170 kills. Seems to be a worthwhile investment if you're into some non-stop farming (at least with current prices on my server).

I just spent three hours under the effect of this potion, farming the mobs at Ruins of Ammon in Uldum (southwestern side of the map). I chose this spot sort of randomly, but it ended up working out pretty well as I never ran out of mobs to kill.

Posting my information here for other people to get an idea of how much of a boost these potions give you, let you know a great spot to farm, and to add some data to anyone doing calculations.

After three hours, I had looted the following:
~ 13 stacks of Embersilk Cloth
- 8 Green Quality Items
~ Various grays and gold
- 26 Tiny Treasure Chests

Upon opening the Tiny Treasure Chests, I got:
~ 6 stacks of Embersilk Cloth
- 5 Volatile Life
- 5 Volatile Fire
- 3 Volatile Water
- 5 Volatile Air
- 99g32s31c

For a total of (over three hours):
~19 stacks of Embersilk Cloth
~ 8 Green Quality items and various grays
~ about 150g
- 18 various volatiles

Does it add to the base drops of mobs as well?
I'm pretty sure I was seeing quite a bit more silver and greens while using the potions.
Hard to get exact numbers though.

Something I discovered yesterday: if you have a group, and only one person is using this potion, the tiny treasure chests can drop for them off of the other person's kills/lootable mobs. This seemed to work both for group loot and free-for-all. I killed and looted entire packs, and the potion-using group member was able to come by after and loot treasure chests off of them.

This potion might be best used in a full group (perhaps even raid?) with most people killing and looting their own kills, and the potion-user flying around and picking up the chests.

This is probably a coincidence; Whenever I've been using this while farming level 84-85 skinnable mobs, I've been getting more Strange Bloated Stomach and Savage Leather x2 drops. I'll start keeping track of the amount of leather after an hour of farming with and without this Elixir. Can anyone verify or deny this?

Picked up a potion off the AH for ~250g and went to the Elementium Depths in Twilight Highlands (37,88).

Over the course of an hour I looted:

25g worth of gray items

3 BoE greens (disenchanting into 4 Greater Celestial Essences and 1 Hypnotic Dust)

95 Embersilk cloth

10 Tiny Treasure Chests, containing
- ~34g
- 26 Embersilk cloth (for a total of 121)
- 1 Volatile Life
- 3 Volatile Earths

Checking the prices of each item on the AH I figured I collected about 1,264g worth of materials (not including the money directly looted from corpses as I neglected to track how much I gathered that way), making for about a 500% gain on the cost of the original potion.

Granted, some portion of all this loot would've dropped without the help of the potion, the potion easily gave ample reason to go out and farm, and I certainly wouldn't have grinded with the tenacity I did had I not a limited time buff to worry about making the most of, buffing my gold per hour rate higher.

Found a nice spot in Deepholm. There's an area where the stone dwarfs are fighting troggs (the area where you buff the stone men with the totem). There is usually packs of 4-8 mobs and it's fairly easy to AoE them down (at least as a lock).

Gave this potion to my lvl 83 lock and in an hour I had 27 chests dropped, countless embersilk, loads greens/greys and a tonne of EXP. Also i'm not exaggerating.

Inversely I put a pot on whilst farming in Uldum for volatile air on my 85 mage and found only 8 chests. It's really not worth it unless you hit a spot with tonnes upon tonnes of mobs.

The drop rate must be pretty bad. After an hour of farming/questing using this potion I didn't receive a single chest. I must have killed over 300 mobs.

From what I have seen, the ONLY truly useful time to use this potion is if you are farming and farming HARD.

Casual killing and doing instances seems to be a waste of mats for these pots. I've gone after solo mobs under the potion's effects and only ended up with a few treasure chests. I have also gone to places where I can AOE down 5-14 mobs at a time and found that I end up with significantly more chests. Bottom line, you can do what you want, but to get the most out of this pot, go big or stay home.

I used 2 pots over 2 hours and would get on average a chest every 5 to ten min farming mobs in vashir, not that it mattered but I was trying to maximize how many kills I was getting with almost no downtime on my warlock.

Current feeling after giving this a go is, not really worth chugging just for doing dailies, but pretty good for when you are straight out farming/killing. Did Tol Barad, Wildhammer and Therazane dailies under the effects, wearing off near the end of Therazane, and got 3 chests. Too much time spent moving and picking quest items, not enough time spent killing! :)

From my own experience with these potions, they are not worth it.
Out of the 3 times I've used them i received 1 Chest in the hour of the first one. 2 in the hour of the second and 1 in the hour of the third.
i would recommend making them and selling them, or not making them at all once they become un-popular.
Hopefully blizzard will increase the Drop rate, if they do then they may become more useful.

Feel like this has been nerfed in the past week or so... last 5 times i've used it i've gotten two treasure chests per hour of potion while questing, which is a slap in the face when you look at mats cost. May still be worth it if you're planning to AOE grind specifically for it, but i'm sure there are easier ways to make gold.

Annoying that the treasure increase is so slight that one has to go through all the above shenanigans to even GUESS if there is any usefulness in this potion.

Probably yet another "filler" waste of time potion. Dunno why blizz does this to us. Just dump all the crap potions and make a few good ones if they dont want to bother balancing them out.

Flasked up, ate up, buffed up, and went out to southern Uldum to farm the level 83 undead ghosts for five hours. After extensive farming at a very fast rate, the averages were as follows.

In one hour's time (one potion): 17 chests containing

57.8 gold
58 cloth
13 volatiles

The loot at this drop rate appears higher than initial reports. Even as such, the auction price of the materials to make the potion (as of this post) are approximately 200 gold, sometimes much higher. The auction prices of the gained materials/gold from the drops net you about 500-600 per hour. Leaving a profit of only 400 gold per hour, this form of farming is completely incomparable to herbing/mining. At this point in time, this potion is a waste.

How does this work in regards to when the loot table is determined?

Is it determined that i am under the use of the potion upon mob kill and a chest can/will spawn on the corpse OR does it determine that i am under the use of the potion upon looting the mob and a chest can/will spawn.

Situation:

in a group i am using a potion they are not, they kill the mob i loot it. can i get a chest?

or does it have to be

in a group i am using a potion and i have to tag it in order to get a chest?

because this also comes into play, i kill 50 mobs while using the potion and then it runs out. i go back to loot everything, can i get the chest still because i had the effect upon kill but no upon looting.

Thanks for any help, i have my assumptions but would like to hear others opinions/facts.

I've had others where I pulled a good deal
more volatiles, but just pure time spent farming
the bats and flayers are going to get you 500g
an hour without the buff. The potion is going to

this particular run with only 7 Volatiles in 27
boxes shows that the cloth by itself is worth the
cost of the potion. Pots go around 200-250g on my
server.

Just farmed stone troggs as an 83 Demo lock, I did alot of aoe pulls. Here are my results as of tonight. There was one point where I had to accually miss a 5 min period do to being jumped and killed by alliance. I lost count of the number of kills, is there an addon for that?

77 cloth

and 23 volatiles. 4 earth, 5 fire, 6 air, 5 water, 3 life.
All in all not bad. The price of these potions went way down for some reason on my server. I bought mine for 110g. After this I went and bought 8 more for that price, before the price goes back up.

I spent one hour farming Restless Infantry and Restless Soldier. I chose these mobs because they constantly fight each other, reducing their HP, but give full loot when killed, so you can kill more per hour. Also, they drop cloth, and being that I'm a Tailor, with Northrend Cloth Scavenging, they drop more cloth per kill. Northrend Cloth Scavenging still works on Cataclysm mobs.

I did not AOE farm these, rather I just rode to the next pack, and killed them then loot them. They drop fast.

Here is my regular loot for the hour:

115g from picked up gold + sold greys
8 green items = I de'd these into enchanting mats, but greens right now on my server are listed for 40-100g each, so there's value in them
396 Embersilk Cloth

Loot from 17 Tiny Treasure Chests
- 67g
- 73 Embersilk Cloth = ~5g per = 365g
- 6 Volatile Air = ~40g per = 240g

I paid 210 for the potion, so I made a rough profit of 640g. This of course depends on the values of the above items on your realm, and how much you can get the potion for.

Also I want to reiterate that I got as much cloth as I did because I'm also a Northrend Cloth Scavenger. I'm not sure what kind of loot you would get from these without that perk.

You need to be under the effect of the buff to get the extra loot. if your pot ends up before you loot, you'll see the corpse shining, and when you open loot there wont be anything there, and it'll turn unlootable. like when a mob have only a quest item on his loot table, and you're not in the corresponding quest.

*this is not tested, its assumed by my knowledge on game mechanics.

I've found a pretty awesome place to use these. In deepholm, in the area where all the earthen and the troggs are fighting. The earthen will hold aggro for a decent amount of time while you aoe the troggs down, and there are a metric ton of them as far as the eye can see.

Farmed the Scion of Al'Akir for an hour. Only looted 2 chests.

The first chest after 25 mins of farming which contained 6 Embersilk Cloth and 3g.
The second looted after 44 mins of farming which contained 7 Embersilk Cloth and 4g.

Bought one of these pots for 149g today.
On a lvl 82 Mutilate Rogue, I looted 53.95g.
Vendored 19 greys for 40.53 g.
5 Volatile Fires (20g ea) and 2 Earths (17gea).
15 Embersilk cloths (3.50g ea).
4 Greens with an avg. Disenchant worth of 25g a piece on my server.
6 Tiny Treasure Chests.

Those chests contained:
16g
2 stacks of Embersilk Cloth (70g a stack).
2 Volatile Earths (34g for both).

I will definitely say this pot is worth it.

Oh yea, I was killing level 81 mobs at Ascendamts Rise @ Mt. Hyjal.
Flame Ascendants and Twilight Subjigator's.

After 20 minutes of killing things for dailies in southern Tol Barad - just for dailies, no grinding or even unecessary pulls - I ended up with 4 chests. So if it didn't work in southern TB before, I can confirm it does now.

Anyone else out there tried this + skinning?

Tooltip says "monsters" so I thought I'd give it a shot. Lvl 84 feral druid, North East Twilight Highlands, one hour, 117 mobs (116 savage leathers 1 pristine hide). A random mix of wolves, elks, and owls. I got 2 tiny treasure chests. Wasn't sure if you should open them right away, or just keep them, if no more would drop until you opened them. I left the first unopened for about 25 minutes before I decided to open it up thinking its presence might be preventing another one on the loot table. I got my second, and last around 5 minutes before the potion wore off.

I did get one pristine hide, my first one actually, thinking it was more RNG luck than the potion.

Still curious as to other peoples experiences. LWing takes alot of mats, I'll be spending alot of time skinning alot of mobs, figured I might as well give this potion a chance, intend to try it again a few more times, might have simply gotten some bad luck.

Also assuming I'd had alot better luck if the alt I was doing this on was 85 and had significantly improved gear. More mobs, better chance. And also the time it takes to skin I'm sure cuts out a little of the results. Still, was getting mats, and xp at the same time with a chance for an additional perk, figured it was time well spent.

Regardless, I plan on trying this repeatedly. Wondering (hoping) I was just on the unlucky side of the RNG tonight.

I went an hour with the potion and only one chest dropped, so either I'm really unlucky or the drop rate is a bit low for just buying the potions. Probably more ideal for alchemists and/or herbalists, no wasted money there :D

Great spot to farm with this: Mt Hyjal, the opening area under Nordrassil with the earth elementals. Since the Wardens are fighting them and they have a very fast respawn rate, you can just go around a small area and they will always be there.

1 hr farming there:
20 Chests
91g in grays (a handful of these from mining 1-in-20 elementals accidentally)
52 (!) Volatile Earth (a few of these also from mining, not many at all)
5 greens

in the chests:
76g
4 Volatile Earth
4 Volatile Fire
3 Volatile Water
7 Volatile Life
89 Embersilk Cloth

The high chest count was from BM hunter, I would tag and let pet/wardens do most of the killing. Spent more time looting and walking than killing. Instant respawn on elementals once there are none left in area near wardens; you kill one, then 2 or 3 replace it.

TL;DR: High Volatile Earth and treasure chest count make this one of the most optimal places around, despite the elementals dropping no gold directly. This is only true if there aren't griefers around.

from what i saw from my experience every last one of you was lucky as hell. I used one and grinded for the full hour and got 5 chest all containing nothing but gold..average 3g42s per and a totalof 6 embersilk cloth. not one volatile nor more than one chest contained any cloth.These cost roughly 80-90g to make on our server and the return is less than the cost of mats. Way to go blizzard for finding another useless gold pit.oh and i killed 251 mobs..thats makes drop rate on tiny chests less than 2%. If you are considering making these I seriously wouldnt bother.

I looted 27 of these chests in 1 hour by killing rock elementals in Hyjal right outside at the starting place.

I also made a youtube video of me opening all of the chests + other things related to potion of treasure finding and tiny treasure chests. This is after the 4.0.6 so you'll see the improved loot from the chests. Check it out if you really want to see with your own eyes what you get inside these chests :). It's totally worth it if you can handle grinding mobs non stop for 1 hour... well, as long as you don't pay too much for the potion itself.

I also did another post-4.0.6 run at Mt Hyjal starting area.

19 chests containing:

133 Embersilk Cloth

6 Volatile Air

3 Volatile Fire

6 Volatile Life

2 Volatile Water

2 Elementium Ore

3 Pyrite Ore

Unknown gold, but something like 3g per chest.

Also got 72 Volatile Earth (some from chests), 6 green items (some from chests), and over 100g of grays. All in all, it seems to have gotten a pretty significant buff, even if you only counted the cloth alone. Adding in more volatiles and some ore you might be getting 50% more returns from these potions now. Doing another run now.

A great place to farm for these could potentially be right after you finish Kelpthar Forest and you swim into the cave to meet the Shaman. After you go into a trance, you come back and naga are attacking. If you DO NOT accept the next quest then you will remain in this phase and the counter for the naga killing will go up to 50 and reset at 1 again. You can kill them forever and they keep spawning to attack.

The problem here is that you can't just tap them in order to be able to loot them. You need to do a certain amount of damage, somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of their hp, or 10-15k, I think. But they drop a lot of Embersilk Cloth and they die and respawn the fastest in the game.

If you are a great AoE class then this would be the best way to use this potion, hands down. Many people will have already done Vashj'ir however, and will no longer be able to see this phase. As a BM hunter this was not the best place to farm with this potion, though I can confirm I did get 4 Tiny Treasure Chests in 20 minutes. After that I left to go to Hyjal.

TL;DR: If you level to 85 without doing Vashj'ir AND you have amazing AoE, such as any mage, or boomkin, this should be the best place to use this potion.

Decided to try these out after the buff. Grinded mobs in Vashir near the starting area as a lvl 82 prot pally. Tried to pull between 5 and 10 mobs at a time and AoE them down. In 1 hour I got 11 chests. I could have gone faster but I was skinning as I went and got 15 stacks of leather and leather scraps in the hour as well.

This is what I got just from the chests, ignoring drops from mobs etc.

I suggest for Hunters to go MM for this as Rapid Recuperation automatically restores 50 focus upon killing any mob that rewards experience hence any mobs in the new zones. I farm a spot just below Nordrassil at the twilight camp where the mobs have 24-30k hp. 3 Arcane shots is the most that it takes to kill one of the mobs at 349 average Item level but it usually only takes me 2 as most mobs have already taken damage from the hyjal defenders.

2 Arcane shots costs 44 focus with Efficiency which is completely restored by RR and 3 costs 66 focus with Efficiency and the natural focus regen during the 2 Gcd it takes to fire your three shots will restore most if not all of the 16 focus not restored by RR. With this all you have to do is run around the camp which is constantly respawning spamming AS and looting.

I get an average of 31 chests per hour with this potion and with the 4.06 buff to the chests i made about 1700g from the chests alone on my last try.

On my server, I tend to farm far more than the potion is worth. So, for all those alchemists out there wondering whether they should use the potion themselves or sell it, it is more profitable for you to use them yourself. This would drive the prices up (based on my limited knowledge of economics), thereby making the potion worthless to a player who would buy it on the AH.

tl;dr: As far as I can tell, using the potion yourself is good for you, but bad for the economy. Yes, that's right: You, too, can be Big Pharmaceutical!

Method/Setup

Killed two types of elementals in roughly 1 hour increments. Each grind with a potion had a corresponding grind without.
This occurred over a period of 3 weeks.
Vendor trash Elemental shards were counted at the conclusion of each 1hr grind as well as a tally of loot obtained while doing so.
1798 elementals were looted while the potion was in effect, while 2179 were without potion.

Conclusions:

Potions do not appear to increase the drops of volatiles or uncommon quality items that do not come from Tiny Treasure chests.
5% drop rate of Tiny chests. On average I could kill 200 Elementals per hour so roughly 10 chests per hour
My realized values (in gold) for tiny chests or per potion is obviously flawed in many ways, but the number crunching is just to develop a more tacit understanding of its benefits. To me, the value of this potion is not in gold accumulation, but an increase in efficiency in farming mobs. I need 40 of X, I'll get an extra benefit on the side while doing so.

Ok Something I found after testing it 4 times.

I have been in sfk hc and used this pot for the third time ever. Then i noticed in the end that 12 boxes were in my bag. I noticed there was no tailor in group + that I have asked all people to loot which happened except for 1 mob at the very start.

Now I went the next day sfk hc and had a tailor with me. The result was me ending up with 3 boxes.

Again in GB 10 boxes without tailor and 2 with two of them in group. It might have been coincidence, but if anyone else can verify this, it could make grinding with this pot in dungeon a serious extra money maker!

The data everyone provided on success rate with the chests was very helpful and encouraging so I thought I'd share my experience with this potion.

I used the first one in Uldum grinding air elementals for an hour. The spawns were constant but I was never killing more than one at a time. The mobs themselves dropped lots of volatile air which was nice, but I was very disappointed in the potion. I only got two chests in all those kills. I was discouraged but decided I'd try again today and I must say it's all about LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION :P This time I went to the starting area in Mount Hyjal and grinded the earth elementals as a badly geared level 83 warlock (alt) I was still able to pull and kill about 6 mobs per pull and they constantly respawned. I could have killed more if I had rounded them up better... but anyhow... I had some very good success. I am an alchemist so the potions cost me nothing. I grinded for two hours (two potions) and these are my results:

In two hours I got 107 gold in vendor trash, 12 greens, 46 volatile earths just off of the farming. As for chests related to the potion I picked up a total of 23 chests containing the following:

68 gold
1 uncommon JC recipe (sold it for 250)
5 Volatile Air
7 Volatile water
6 Volatile Life
14 Volatile Earth
7 stacks of embersilk cloth
6 elementium ore
3 pyrite ore

Using this potion and only running the dailies in TH, in 15 minutes i found/looted 5 Tiny Treasure Chest...each containing 3-5g, 8+ Embersilk Cloth, and some of the following Volatile Life,Volatile Fire, Pyrite Ore, and ~~Obsidiam~~ Elementium Ore.
This item can very easily double or triple the cost incurred from either Creating or purchaseing this from AH/Alch.

TLDR: Don't try to farm Enslaved Inferno + Enslaved Tempest in Twilight Highlands.

Was massive fail.

Problems:
1) Respawn rate is too slow.
2) You have to fly/run a lot between them.
3) Most of the times you need to wait for the freed elemental to finish spawning to be able to loot the corpse.

Grand total in 1 hour:
160 kills
massively epic total of 5 treasure chests

The only thing that kept me in good mood that Deathwing came to visit so I got my Stood in the Fire

I have not bothered to confirm this, but I have noticed that mobs that usually do not drop trash or greens tend not to drop the tiny treasure chests either. I spent 40 minutes killing Sand Pygmys and only got 1 chest. I've farmed elsewhere with much better results, so I feel like the mob that I was killing had something to do with my poor results.

Should this be true, then the tiny treasure chest is a drop replacement item - which possibly explains why some of you see fewer green items dropped by mobs. Anyhow, if the tiny treasure chest is a possible loot replacer, then you would want mobs that frequently drop several things (in the event that it is checked per item).

Anyhow, just musing on how this potion works. At the very least, I would not suggest farming Sand Pygmys as I definately had poor luck with them.

Found out this potion also works in the new Dungeons, very nice added loot that doesnt need to rolled on. Tiny Treasure Chest drops, and various other items are lootable from dead critters and can sometimes be looted after other players have already looted creature.

Added: Tested this in new FL Raid, and the chests drops from there as well, it dropped several times on critters that were previously looted by others in the raid, after the other party looted....critter started to give the "sparkle" which allowed me to loot this item.

Hate to point it out , these mobs where heavily nerfed. Spent the afternoon farming them and got 12 yes, just 12 V.E from the mobs your talking about, I also know others on the server who have also had the same shocking luck..which to me means they have seriously nerfed these mobs dropping the resource, they are actually worse in my experience than the mines.

Apparently, the drop rate for the tiny chests from these potions seems to be broken, or nerfed. Previously, while farming leather, I would kill and skin 20 mobs every 5 minutes, so about 200 per hour. Allowing coffee drinking, and other time outs. So we will go with 200 kills. This yielded about 12 chests. Today, after 30 minutes, say 100 kills, I got zero tiny chests. So i moved to kill humanoids, giblins in Vashj'ir. Fast spawn, easy kill on a lv 85 hunter. 30 minutes yielded up 4 chests and of course 0 leathers. In fact, it wasn't until 40 minutes had passed that i even got the first chest. Giblin kill rate is about 3 per minute, they are farther apart and smaller, harder to find to loot. You have to be right on them and the area is 3d. (like floating in space... of course, you are in water) In other words, if you are not right on x,y,z you cant loot and have to move until you are. I am wondering if anyone has noticed a change in the drops. Either per hour or from specific mobs.

I'm wondering if there is a bad interaction with Northern Cloth Scavenging and this buff. I farmed for an hr this morning, and my chest drop was about 1/2 of normal (12 chests after farming troggs for an hour as an ilvl 352 fire mage -- used to get 20+ regularly before picking up tailoring).

I've collected some data from using this while farming Scalding Rock Elementals in Mount Hyjal (near Nordrassil) on a miner.

I was in need of volatile earth mostly but I thought I'd go ahead and try and beef up my farming time using a Potion of Treasure Finding.

I had to use my miner so the drawback is both that I had to stop to loot AND mine the corpses of everyting I killed, plus she's a protection paladin so I had to pull large groups and just sort of hump them to death with AoE. I looted and kept it ALL to include in my final tally:

- 407 gray quality "shards" (efflorescing shards, hoary crystals, etc.) vendored for 128g
- 2 gray items vendored for 4g
- 2 green items, disenchanted but their vendor value was 10g
- 46 volatile earth
- 10 tiny treasure chests

Inside my 10 tiny treasure chests:
- 37g
- 35 embersilk cloth
- 11 volatile fire
- 5 volatile earth
- 5 volatile water
- 3 volatile life
- 1 green item, disenchanted but the vendor value was 7g

I pulled current market value for my realm for the consumables and adding that to everything vendored I came in at: 1133g 55s (total)

386g 38s of that total is what came from the tiny treasure chests I picked up.

A nice boost for sure, and technically the treasure chests didn't add any extra work that I was already going to do to farm the volatile earth. So looks like if you're doing any farming of this sort, don't leave home without your potions, kids!

ok so i just started doing this and i find this to be rly easy to benifit from if you can farm alot of adds 10-17+ adds on you at a time the best place i have found to do this is in deepholm. at a place called stonehearth. i did this on my paly tank 85 and was easly able to clean house there after 1 hour of farming and around 250+ mobs looted i got. 123g 8 Boe greens 74 cloth and countless amounts of greys from looting alone. then i also looted 43 chest witch contaned 145 cloth 8 volatile earth 7 volatile air 10 volatile fire and only 2 volatile water also got 13 BoE greens and 1 BoE blue. with another 234g from chest. so after 1 hour of farming i was able to get.

219cloth=rouphly 825g
21 greens sold for around 1000g
27 volatiles sold for 270g
and 1 blue for 250g

at the end of farming i walked away with..=rouphly 2345g minus the AH fees

So i would say that this potion is def worth it if you have the time and pationts to go out there and work your ass off

About 40 minutes of farming north of Stonehearth in deepholm on my ilvl 350 frost DK, averaging 12 loots per minute got me 25 chests.
~480 kills
Checked mind on my money achievement, got 200g looted in that time period and 10 stacks of embersilk, plus pyrium, greens, and about a dozen of each volatile.

Worth the price of the potion? Definitely. Can make 1000g/hr with this. Keep in mind that I was killing groups of 5-10 in about 10-15 seconds each, though.

RNG is awful on these...I can get 5 in a group of 10 then none for 100+ kills.

In fact, the mats are about 60 gold on my server, so I'm gonna stock up on some.

I want to try Stonehearth later, the only reason I didn't use it this time is because I'm a tailor and I've seen a few people mention a possible conflict with Scavenging. Given the way they both work, it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm wondering if someone can confirm if they've ever had this effect give them a treasure drop on the same mob they also get an Electrostatic Condenser proc and skin a Strange Bloated Stomach. Maybe it's just my runs with these two things but I'm almost entirely convinced the proc of one is exclusive with the other, with definite favouritism toward the condenser. That is, I think my condenser is eating my mini-treasure procs and going off more often as a result.

Most times I've been out to the Obsidian Forest in TwiLands skinning some 250-300 dragons an hour with one of these potions active and a condenser in my bag. When I'm not using one of these potions I find the condenser usually will proc something like 3 times in 10 kills and then not again for...2 days or so. But with both I'm finding I finish with 8-12 stomachs in my bag by the end and, if I'm super lucky, one treasure.

Does this happen to anyone else that'd tried this combo of skinning, condenser and potion being active while farming?

Since my last post, I went out tonight on my Tailor Spriest to the Troggs north of Stonehearth. My rogue friend wanted to go out and pickpocket, and it goes faster for him if someone is killing those mobs as they respawn quickly, so I decided it was a good time to go test Potion + Scavenging. We set out (ungrouped) and I was pleased with my results.

I killed 543 mobs and got 27 potions. This is consistent with the 5% drop rate expected. Maybe I just had a lucky run, but I think Scavenging doesn't interfere with the potion, or if it does, that it's probably not the Potion that is affected.

I got 10 stacks of cloth off of the mobs themselves. I don't know whether that's less than should be expected with Scavenging or not, off the top of my head.

But anyway, the treasure chest haul was pretty nice. It is a bit more work than the Eles though. The Eles are seriously mindless farming, with the Troggs, you really have to work your mana/surv CDs and abilities to keep alive and still keep a good killing pace.

The rogue got 77 lockboxes and a few stacks of rogue potions, and never had to stop while mobs were unpickable, so I think we may partner up for this sort of thing again in the future.

For tailors, this potion is a great thing.
While you have to farm humanoid mobs for extra cloth drops (scavenging works in Cata too), you also get these chests with various loot.
After 30 minutes of farming in the restless front I've collected 7 chests. 4 Volatile life, 1 volatile earth, 2 greens, 1 pyrite ore, 3 elementium ore, and more than 10 stacks of cloth. Did not count the money coming from them.

I'd suggest going to Twilight Highlands and killing water elementals to the west of Dragonmaw Port. In looting water elemntals, there is a significant drop rate of Volatile Water, which really adds up in addition to chests gathered. The only downside is that the elementals are of course level 85, but they spawn very quickly and you should have no trouble killing them one after another with no breaks. In 1 hour I was able to obtain:

Here are the results of my first potion used. I farmed humanoids in Tol Barad for 1 hour.
I looted: 147 Embersilk Cloth, 10 Tiny Treasure Chests and 4 Greens!
The Chests yielded: 43 Embersilk Cloth, 28 Gold, 5 Volatile Water, 10 Volatile Fire, 4 Volatile Life and 3 Pyrite Ore.
Needless to say I'll be using these more often.

I had to check this out a second time. Same Spot. Here are the results:
225 Embersilk Cloth, 12 Tiny Treasure Chests and 2 Greens.
The Chests yielded: 76 Embersilk Cloth, 40 Gold, 7 Volatile Fire, 4 Volatile Earth, 5 Pyrite Ore and 5 Elementium Ore.

The Restless Front in Tol Barad is a great place for using this potion. Just kill the soldiers at low health, loot, and continue on your way. By the time you get to the end, you can turn around and most, if not all, will have respawned behind you. The only things you have to worry about are other players questing (and taking the mobs), or gankers.

Edit: I did this as a 360 ilvl PvE Frost DK. Spammed Howling Blast on the mobs and got em down quick.

After one hour of farming, this is what I got:

Use: Allows you to sometimes find extra treasure from monsters in Mount Hyjal, Vash'jir, Deepholm, Twilight Highlands and Uldum. Lasts 1 hour. Effect persists through death. (1 Min Cooldown)

I haven't seen any posts at all about this potion + pickpocketing. The tool tip doesn't say anything about what sort of looting is involved (although it may be assumed that death is naturally involved). Also, the word "monster" in this case doesn't rule out humanoids, as stone troggs drop it and they are vaguely humanoid.

I'm curious to know if this potion has the possibility of allowing the snagging of Tiny Treasure Chests on the down low for those of us with larceny in our hearts and a ton of victims in Stonecore (the mindless fanatics all nice and lined up just prior to final boss).

Edit: After rigorous testing in The Stonecore and Lorthuna's gate, I can only conclude that either this is not a feature of the potion or I am very very unlucky. It does prove that The Twilight's Hammer is a bunch of drunken, smelly, superstitious, stressed-out, VERY lonely fanatics who don't take care of their toys, if the contents of their pocketses are deemed decent indicators. As a priest killing the troggs in Deepholm with the Oracle trinket is pretty nice. I haven't kept track of chest drops before but kept count this last time, I had 28 chests in 1 hour, I just MS away. I usually get about 85 BoEC after an hour. If you use this pot right it can really pay off.

I should have kept track but using one I circled Needlerock Slag to Stonehearth using AOE spells with my mage I earned 1000g in loot and the AH.... I couldn't believe it. I will keep note next time and report back.

Best use of this potion follows a 3 step process.

1) Have a character capable of good/great AE (Mage or Demo Lock for instance).

2) Go to Deepholm. Due west of the Temple of Earth, there is a battlefield with dwarves and troggs fighting.

3) AoE the trogg packs down for the duration of the potion.

You will wind up with, no joke, about 15 treasure boxes after 15-20 minutes. You WILL need to empty your bags out before the potion expires. Maybe twice.

For those wanting to get the most out of these potions, I can highly recommend farming the stone troggs between the needlerock slag and stonehearth in deepholm.

On my feral druid I was able to get ablout 45-50 chests in only one hour!

Bring a AOE strong class and you will kill tons of troggs in no time!

Found it to be useful for farming volatile air in Uldum, of the Scions elementals. Not counting the chests, I've noticed that the droprate increased while buffed. Need some more fieldtesting to confirm..

I'm curious to try those Troggs in deepoholm. I'm a tailor spriest(so I'm sure the tailoring adds to the cloth drops), but on average from an hour of farming in the restless front(TB) I get ~15-20 chests, and about 30 total stacks of embersilk(including what I get in the chests). I've also made 500g before in one hour just from enchanting mats while farming, as well as one epic. It's a beast spot, especially if you're on a pve server and don't have to worry about getting ganked.

***Just spent an hour on the Troggs and got the following:
29 chests
19 hypnotic dust(from DEs)
8 lesser celestial essence(from DEs)
24 stacks embersilk
15 volatile fire
8 volatile water
7 volatile earth

I can save everyone a lot of reading and time by summing this up. This pot increases your gold making by hard farming mobs. This pot DOES NOT make farming mobs the most profitable / easiest thing to do to make money. This pot WILL NOT be profitable if you are just casually killing mobs. If you are farming mobs anyways for a specific item you need or farming because you don't want to buy mats off the AH, pick on of these up on the way out and you'll make some extra gold while you're at it.

If you are a person who does a lot of grinding, for instance a tailor who grinds their own cloth, a skinner, or someone who prefers grinding their XP to doing straight-up questing, then this potion is much more valuable used during one of these expeditions than sold. 10 chests will net you an average of around 50g from coin drops alone, while the cloth, ore, and volatiles will give another fair amount. And in a heavy farming session, 10 chests is not an unreasonable number to expect, with 15-20 being quite possible. Potentially even more if one is AOEing fairly low level mobs. All in all, from averages shown above, 250g is not an unreasonable expectation in chest-drops from a hard farming session.

If you are not one who does a lot of grinding, however, or uninterested in a one-hour heavy kill-a-thon, then it is likely worth your time to put the pots up on the AH. They tend to sell on my server for more than the price of the herbs, and I've never had a pot sit for a full 24 hours before it gets snagged. That may be dependent on server, of course; YMMV. However, it's safe to say that unless you are the sort to do a *lot* of killing in an hour, AHing them is much more worth your time than trying to use it and expecting a huge payoff.

Farming 100 Troggs in Needlerock Slag under with pot vs without pot

Gold looted and gold received from trash were virtually identical, roughly 35g per 100 kills; however after opening my four chests, the potion loot was superior by this amount:

10 gold
4 green items (disenchanted for 6 hypnotic dust, 3 lesser celestial essence)
22 embersilk cloth (that's 22 embersilk more than without potion, 40 embersilk total)
2 pyrite ore
2 elementium ore
3 volatile air

And these are some of the poorer chests that I've looted. Depending on how fast you kill and what your AH market is like, loot with the potion can be worth your time for easy mat farming.

After trying out many places, I finally found a great place to use the potion of treasure finding: at coordinates 60,30 in Twilight Highlands on the Obsidian Slaves. In one hour, I obtained 18 treasure chests, plus many mats, counting the ones I got from disenchanting the greens obtained. I received 38 Volatile Earths from the slaves and more in the chests, 78 embersilk cloths (counting the ones in the treasure chests) and much more. Altogether, I made out with about 650 gold worth of mats, plus additional gold obtained from the treasure chests and looted from the humanoids that accompanied some of the slaves. Not bad for a potion that cost me 65 gold.

Just gave this a shot for an hour at the Trogg spot in Deepholm, got 85 gold from all the silver loot from the mobs and the following:

19 Treasure Chests
3+ stacks of Embersilk Cloth
A few greens and other junk.
Not bad.

The chests gave:
~75 Gold
Lots of 10s of Embersilk Cloth (nice)
Half a stack of Elementium Ore and almost a full stack of Pyrite
A small amount of Volatiles (Life and Fire)

If you're focused on killing things pretty fast, I can at least see this making up for the cost of the potion though this is on Terenas and YMMV.

26 volatiles spread over all 5 species, estimated for at least 50g

the gold from the chest solely (39,37*2 = 78,74) makes up for the cost of the potion @ ah, being 75 gold
the rest is pure win (also the fact that my alt made the pot under ah-price)

this is ofc without the loot the dragons give me by normal loot + skinning, i estimate the profit @ 1000+ gold/hour at lowest

This is also really good item to have if you want to gather a bunch of different trade goods (cloth, ores, volatiles, and leather/scales) all at the same time instead of farming each one separately. This kind of farming is good for stocking up guild banks, or your own personal bank. :) True story.

These do work in the cata dungeons, but the best way to make use of em is to farm large groups of fast respawning mobs. I don't remember reading anything about a nerf, but I've noticed a dramatic decrease in the amount of loot in the chests in the past week. Embersilk now dropping like 2-4 per chest, I used to get 10 or so per chest + some volatiles.

I just tried one of these for the first time with no apreciable results for skinning. After an hour I had within the margin of error the same amount of leather I would have had without it. The only thing I got unusual was a (only one) tiny treasure box. I was in the Twilight Highlands.

Would be nice if they worked elsewhere to up the chance at zone drops. :)

So in conclusion I made almost 94g 100% profit! I managed to kill 232 things in 1 hour and get 10 boxes that is a 4.31% drop rate of the boxes for me. FYI I'm a max level elemental shaman with semi raid gear that killed mainly level 80 crabs in vash for an hour. I wouldn't recommend farming this way unless you are farming leather. You can make a small extra gold with this but you'd have to farm straight for an hour with no slacking! Hardly worth the little bit of extra gold you get out of it. Now of course it may be cheaper if you buy the mats for the potion on your server. But in my case I just made 94 g from mainly the cloth that came out of the boxes.

I just farmed with one of these, cost about 60g in mats to make as an alchemist. I tried the Trogg spot in Deepholm like many here advised. I probably farmed for around 50 minutes of the hour and here's what I came away with:

Edit: Ive used these quite a few times now, and I like them most because their fun, read around theres a chance the chests contain something rarer and along with some blue gear once today I looted the pattern: Formula: Enchant Bracer - Mighty Intellect, nice suprise!

I've been trying to farm Deepsea Scale and hadn't had much luck in Vash'jir... so I consulted Wowhead and the comments pointed me towards ... so I hearthed and flew to Feralas.

I had about 3 minutes left on my Potion of Treasure Finding, and on the 5th kill, with about 20 seconds to spare, a Tiny Treasure Chest dropped. Wondering if it was a fluke, I decided to go ahead and drink another one.

I can confirm they drop from both and in the Steam Pools area of Feralas. My drop rate was pretty minimal (7 in one hour), so no idea if it's affected by the fact that it isn't in one of the tool tip areas.

10x lvl 79 greens ~ 2500g (250g each, for leveling chars that wants to play dungeons right away they hit 80, they pay good and so do I when leveling chars)

This is a good farming place, not a farmer myself, I just felt like farming and see how good this potion is.
And now I know, it's good, but not for me, I earn more gold by playing with auction house in this time I spent on farming, but it was interesting nontheless! :)

Updated last picture, saw that I had circle it an inch wrong

Last note: Don't know how many treasure chests I got, but doesn't matter, I got tons of them, TONS, it is a good potion, I would never go farm cata stuff without it.
Also I know this isn't 100% related to this potion, I just wanted to give a farming tip/experience with this potion together with a good farming spot.
I play on outland realm, therefor you can't judge the prices for what I sold everything for, it's different from realm to realm.
Farmed between 8:00-10:00, did only see 2 alliance players while I was farming at this hour, they were not in the way at all.

i have been wondering do the potion work when looting or when you kill something for example i kill 20 mobs while under the potions effect but it wears off before i can loot them do lose the chance at getting the potion then and if i do can i then do something like kill 20 mob then use the potion and then have a chance at looting so my question is simply do the effect get added when a mob dies or when its looted?

I use these potions farming Embersilk cloth in Needlerock Chasm in Deepholme. In 1 hour, I get between 420 and 480 cloth pcs, which include the contents of all treasure chests. The number of chests have varied a lot for me, I've had anywhere from 20 to 40 chests per hour. Oh yeah, and i'm a fire mage too, so pulling 3+ packs at a time is no problem for me (396 i level) ; P

So far they've been totally worth it for me. I pay about 180g for the potion and easily get the money back just from the embercloth I find (which typically goes for 60-80g per stack on AH). Typically after the hour is done I end up about 600g richer from selling the mats that come off the mobs and in the chests.

My chosen area of farming is the Verall River in the Twilight Highlands plus the surrounding houses. The potion actually works very well in conjunction with the Thundermarr daily quests, because you have to kill a number of nasty dwarves to do them, and then you can keep killing around the river and houses for more drops, and turn in the quests for more gold after the hour is done.

Well, for one hour's work in Deephome at the Troggs (wish I'd counted the gold from looting and greys but I did not)

40 chests-
(11 stacks of Embersilk Cloth, 30 pyrite, 10 elelmentium, 90 volatiles and 1 green, 160 gold)
13 greens
8 stacks of Embersilk cloth

I was very happy with those numbers.

i have farmed Mainly troggs the Bersk/Geo ones as a prot pally i have neted 49 chest at night mainly when i'm alone really comes down to KS if ya can AOE mobs in 5-15 secs you can rock away & mass amount chest.

another good spot if your Really geared & good is the troggs at top Right of the map in deepholm theres a spot where they runing right above has hundreds of troggs with a 10 second respawn you can pull 10-30 behind the rock at the end of the ledge AOE/Safly loot enless you have a healer with you & your a Tank/DPS like a mage/lock you could prolly net like 1k+ kills an hour at this spawn. just be warned 99% them mobs go into a Hard bersrk mode & can hit hard.

Also if your 83 & lvling this is a easy way to Make cash & lvl i was netting 2mil-3mil xp per hour as a Demo lock.

mages/locks/ele shammy & prot pallys can Kill the troggs like cake if your prot just constantly use your AOE Assist taunt on the Mobs that have the most aggro & they all pile on you makes it so easy.

So, as of 4.3 (today actually-- just now), I spent my first hour using this in Western Deepholm with all the huge trogg packs.

I got (not including greys/straight gold):

21x Tiny Treasure Chest
19x Random Greens
~157 Embersilk Cloth (I -think- I didn't have any on me; no more than 2 stacks)

I did this as a Survival Hunter, so I had a ton of AoE DPS, and although I wasted a couple of minutes in the beginning, I quickly learned to attack only groups that had more than 3.

I payed 160g for the potion... -Definitely- still worth it

Edit: I completely miscounted. I got about 13-15 stacks of Embersilk cloth. I ended up getting 1200g just from that alone.

So basically this is worth it only if you can AoE the mobs quickly, or if say, your alt makes the potions for free :-)

these dont work in dungeons or raids. only in certain areaas of the world as listed on potion tooltip plus tol barad.

Keep in mind, Even if you do not find enough chests to cover the price of the potion (although you do.) This potion is still profitable, Because it keeps you farming so that the potion doesn't go to waste :)

These have been nerfed to the point of useless. The drop rate has been lowered so much, they might as well have just removed this completely from the game rather than let people waste an hour of their time trying.

IF 2 players have the potion activated, and they stay in party, and 1 of them loots EVERYTHING on the mobs, he might get the treasure chests but the other player won't unless he will loot before the other does. If the 2 players are in party, and 1 kills for the other which has the potion he will definitely get treasure chests (depends on the drop chance). The WISEST way to use the potion is either to kill solo, either someone kills mobs for you, either you are in dungeons/raids and you are the only one who uses the potion. WATCH OUT! Only 1 party/raid member can loot the chests!
I've tested this, and i killed mobs with someone in party, and we got about 750 gold from sales for each after using the potion. Good luck everyone!

Does this benefit everyone in the party? Since I have a Priest and Shadow sucks for farming compared to like a Death Knight for Embersilk in Deepholm. So I could have someone else kill everything while I loot it :P.

I've been using this while farming Owls, Hippogryphs, wolves, and elk in Twilight Highlands. Very good skinning spot if you keep your pace up. Unfortunately I think using these potions while skinning reduces the usefullness a lot just because of the downtime of skinning. I'd just about break even or make 100g or less from these potions most of the time. There was once where I actually lost gold by using one, but overall I made gold. Now the prices have jumped up on my server and I don't think I will even bother with them anymore. I also don't like the feeling of being half way through a potion and still not having made my gold back, only to grind through it for almost nothing.

From my experience, the Stone Trogg Berserkers in Deepholm seem to be the most profitable to farm when under the effect of this potion. One hour of farming these as a Bear tank (very fast, AoE groups of 10-15 at a time) resulted in:

* ~50g looted
* 25 Treasure Chests
* 15 green items
* 6 Embersilk Cloth stacks
* ~56g gold from selling trash

Opening those 25 chests, I got:

* ~80g looted
* 20 Elementium Ore
* 7 Embersilk Cloth stacks
* 2 green items
* 1 blue ring
* 3-5 of each volatile earth, fire, water, air, life

For 40g per potion, I can definitely say it is worth it, haha.

After my first run with my blood dk ilvl383 I got
230g off mobs
232 embersilk
8 greens
9 elementium
10 pyrite
6 vol fire
3 vol water
9 vol life
2 vol earth
25g in trash items
total after opened chests which was around 25 paid 15g for potion

Wow.....have they nerfed these potions down? Just used one and after one hour of killing random mobs in Uldum I got:

4 Green items
6 Gray items
no treasure chests

I mean, without the potion, I probably would have gotten those greens and grays anyway. What gives? I've used them there before and have always gotten at least 4 or 5 treasure chests.
