It drops 'a lot' of gold IMO, volatiles and embersilk cloth.

If you go AOE farming for Embersilk cloth than this thing significantly increases your yield.

Also after 5-6 hours of grinding some nice pack of humanoids I have also found that the volatile calculation is not exclusive. One occasion I got a chest with 1-3 of each volatile. (as well as 5G and 12 embersilk).

Note: the drop rate percentage of cloth and volatiles are lower than they are displayed to be on wowhead because often chests will contain -only- gold and no cloth/volatiles. The number of chests that contain nothing isn't factored in by wowhead, only chests that contain loot. So what it really means is that, of the chests that do contain either cloth or volatiles, 84% of the time, they contain 4-11 cloth. However, the actual drop rate of cloth is probably closer to 50%, if not lower.

Just did an hour in Deepholm farming troggs on my mage. Not sure how many I killed, but it was probably over 300.

Loot off monsters:
81g in coins
31g in Charsi food
7 greens
118 embersilk cloth
14 tiny treasure chest

Loot from chests:
57 embersilk cloth
2 volatile fire
55g in coins

The potion cost me about 250g to make.

Volatile fire's are running for 15g on my server. Embersilk cloth is 5g a piece. (30g +285g +55g) = 370g. Thats 120g profit for using the potion, which is better than not making a profit at all. Consider how much I would have made without the potion (81g + 31g + 200g from D/E greens + 590g from silk) = 902g.

Now for how much the potion actually helped me, percentage wise. ( 120 / (902 +120) ) * 100 = %11.7.

So my profits increased by %11.7 Keep in mind that the sample size is entirely inadequate, and keep in mind the RNG. I only got a single loot of volatiles (fire x 2). If I had gotten multiple volatile air, which go for 40g on my server, than the numbers would have been different. Either way, my luck was not the greatest, but even so, the cloth itself paid for the potion. Anything else was just a bonus.

The trick to the potion is to maximize kills per hour. There are many places where an aoe class can get a massive number of kills to maximize profits. I see several people chose Deepholm like me. The place is very good. Killing was very easy, and it probably took me longer to actually loot the bodies than to kill them.

In one hour farming twilight dragonkin and humanoids in Deepholm I got 14 chests. My tip is to pop a potion when you go out to farm other things, the chest shouldn't be the main reason you kill the mobs but it is a nice addition nonetheless.

(I got 9 Strange Bloated Stomachs and about half of the mobs were skinnable so drop rate could be roughly the same)

Currently on the PTR Patch 4.0.6

The drops from Tiny Treasure Chests have been improved slightly.

Did a quick 1hour test, It seemed the drop rate was lowered however the test was not long enough to find out.

The drop rates of volatiles inside this have increased, been getting 1-5 so far.

Also I have gotten Pyrite ore inside this too.

I'm sure more testing may reveal more info about this after patch.

I just finished farming various mobs in Deepholm. I started with some troggs but when they got too many for me and my friend we moved on to something a bit more manageable but still went non-stop.

We both used a potion, but I feel like it doesn't work very well. Between the two of us I think we got about 14 chests, myself getting around 10-11 and he getting the other 3-4.

From the chests was mostly gold and cloth, a scant few volatiles. I believe we got close to 10 greens, what seemed to be a little more money than usual but the usual amount of trash drops.

This is something probably better left to farming by yourself if you know you can kill things quickly. Since the mats aren't cheap (yet) and I have a hard time finding a lot of Heartblossom, I probably won't be doing this often. I feel like I get better yields by fishing the Sealed Crates from TB than these chests.

Farming the Troggs in Deepholm for 1 hour, using Potion of Treasure Finding and Northern Cloth Scavenging got me the following items:

-87g
-27 Tiny Treasure Chest
-405 Embersilk Cloth
-11 Greens
-37 Greys

As a Warlock, all I do is use my affliction pvp spec, summon a Voidwalker and put him on defensive and cast Corruption and Bane of Agony on every mob. It's pretty easy to farm and its worth it if you are leveling Tailoring. Also a good way to make money.

As of patch 4.0.6 i gotten some Elementium ore, Pyrite ore and 1 green item out of the new improved tiny treasure chests.

I looted 27 of these chests in 1 hour by killing rock elementals in Hyjal right outside at the starting place.

I also made a youtube video of me opening all of the chests + other things related to potion of treasure finding and tiny treasure chests. This is after the 4.0.6 so you'll see the improved loot from the chests. Check it out if you really want to see with your own eyes what you get inside these chests :). It's totally worth it if you can handle grinding mobs non stop for 1 hour... well, as long as you don't pay too much for the potion itself.

FYI, killing flayer swarmers or the bat swarms in deepholm (the patrolling mobs in packs of ~6) no longer drop any loot. So using them to get a bag full of TTC is no longer possible.

Method/Setup

Killed two types of elementals in roughly 1 hour increments. Each grind with a potion had a corresponding grind without.
This occurred over a period of 3 weeks.
Vendor trash Elemental shards were counted at the conclusion of each 1hr grind as well as a tally of loot obtained while doing so.
1798 elementals were looted while the potion was in effect, while 2179 were without potion.

Conclusions:

Potions do not appear to increase the drops of volatiles or uncommon quality items that do not come from Tiny Treasure chests.
5% drop rate of Tiny chests. On average I could kill 200 Elementals per hour so roughly 10 chests per hour
My realized values (in gold) for tiny chests or per potion is obviously flawed in many ways, but the number crunching is just to develop a more tacit understanding of its benefits. To me, the value of this potion is not in gold accumulation, but an increase in efficiency in farming mobs. I need 40 of X, I'll get an extra benefit on the side while doing so.

Out of roughly 1.5 hours questing in Twilight Highlands I got 11 chests in total which contained the following:

I also noticed that this potion works in Tol Barad aswell as I went there with a few minutes left and scored a chest on the first demon @ one of the dailies.

These chests drop from mobs in Tol Barad too.
I got them from the mobs in the area while doing the Baradin's Wardens daily quests but never from although i kill them pretty often since i am farming for the Fox Kit companion pet.
For my surprise i got today one containing Design: Agile Shadowspirit Diamond which is the last meta gem recipe i was missing on my jc.Sweet ^^
In my opinion these items are very random to drop. There are days that i get 0 or 1 in 1hour and other times more than 10 and rich in volatiles and cloth.
Anyways the recipe i got today motivated me to keep on testing my luck :)

Just spent an hour doing ordinary questing (killing mobs, quest turn-ins & stops for herb gathering) in Mt Hyjal as a level 85.

Have had nothing but amazing luck with this, especially as a rogue. Farming trogs in deepholm; first I pickpocket in the hopes of getting one of the rare epic rogue weapons, then I kill and loot for tiny treasure chests. Got a TON of pyrite, ore, cloth and volatiles. easily 1k worth.

Another great plus of Alchemy. I found the the best spot to farm these (for Alliance at least) is at Needlerock Slag, where the Earthen and the Stone Troggs are fighting. The Geomancers and Berserkers are grouped close together and respawn fast - perfect for aoe-ing. The Geomancers and Berserkers also have the highest drop rate of the Tiny Treasure Chest (3%), EXCLUDING the Highbank Snipers (5%) in the Twilight Highlands, which are hostile towards Horde only.

The real key to farming for these is to have an area with a fast respawn rate. The faster the better. As of late 4.2 the troggs in deep holm seem to be the best place to do this. In an hour of farming i filled an embersilk bag with them

farmed the troggs in deepholm for these with the potion enabled did about 2 hrs worth all up i made about 2.5k gold just from selling vendor trash all the volatiles the cloth , greens etc etc not a bad outlay for a 50g potion "Get on it!"

The best way to consider these chests is not so much 'the sole reason for farming', but instead 'a nice bonus for farming'. Pop a Potion Of Treasure Finding before you go out on a heavy skinning, cloth farming, daily-rush, or XP-grinding session that you expect to last an hour or more. With the amount of mobs that you're killing, whether AOE or otherwise, you *should* be able to get a minimum of 8 chests, and more likely 10-15. The greens, volatiles, ore, cloth, and gold the 'bonus chests' drop will generally pay for the potion that you used, and as you were already killing those masses of enemies, you aren't going out of your way to hunt things down.

I craft these as an alchemist, and would much rather use them than sell them on the AH, as it is a difference between a 100-200g (max) each on the AH, and a 300g (minimum) increase on a farming session. If you are not a heavy grinder, then selling at the AH is much more profitable, as they don't tend to sit for long. People buy them fast and I rarely have them sit up for the full 24 hours when I *do* put them up.

Since Transmute Living Elements always gives volatile air if you do the transmute in Uldum, I decided to try a theory.
I took 10 chests and opened them in Uldum and got 22 volatile air, 1 volatile life, 1 volatile earth and 7 volatile fire. I don't know if I just got lucky or if there's a connection.

And before you say you can't get certain volatiles from specific locations, Blizz poster Lylirra posted: If you use this transmute while in one of the new Cataclysm zones associated with the Elemental Planes, however, the element into which your Volatile Life will transform will be predetermined. For example, if you use Transmute: Living Elements while in Uldum, you will always receive Volatile Air for your efforts.

Mount Hyjal: Volatile Fire
Vashj'ir: Volatile Water
Deepholm: Volatile Earth
Uldum: Volatile Air

So, if you need some certain volatiles, it may be worth a try.

This took me 2 hours to get 67, I use a frost mage (Been AoE grinding since BC) I started in Netherstorm, and ever since I always looked for spots to grind with Blizzard.

If you wan't to know my spot, It's in Deepholm, these mobs realistically take 20 seconds to respawn after death, so once you're done looting, bam, they are back.

Some tricks; Mirror Image will take all aggro and bunch them up for you
Cold Snap is very useful as well.
I usually ice block, let them gather up and I let iceblock run out and i use my own nova, & save my pets nova for when they start moving.

It's also nice to find some cata enchants, the past 7 potions I've used (7 hours) I found 2 recipes for enchanters, both sold for over 2100g each, a total of 4650 I believe.

Patch 4.3

I tried using a potion of treasure finding a couple weeks ago, went to deepholm to "needlerock slag" I'm 85, and the creatures there are 82. Green to me, only found 1 chest in an hour. With that being said I decided to give it another try, and followed SIENT's (previous post) advice..

I went to verlont stand in deepholm. I am an 85 frost mage as well. There I stould on a boulder and kept pulling the guys into me, freezing them, icy veins then blizzard spam and ended up doing very well.

In 1 hour this is what I got, wrote it down for you guys so you can get an idea of what you possibly can get. Keep in mind I'm not that great of a fighter yet so those of you more experienced with your character can probably get way more than this being I died a few times and am a bit rusty after not playing for a year... ANYWHO

VERLOK STAND - DEEPHOLM

1 HOUR:

15 treasure chests
198 embersilk cloth (9 stacks plus 18 pieces)
4 green items (haven't disenchanted yet)
7 pyrite ore
6 elementium ore
5 volatile air
6 volatile earth
90 gold from chests
10 gold looted while killing stuff
and 8 more gold from grey items- so about 110 gold all together.

Shadow priests: feel useful again! Here's how to grind out tons of these chests in Deepholm on the s and s that are fighting the s and s.

Target the friendly unit closest to the center of the pack, within max 10 yards of the largest concentration of troggs.

Monsters in Tol Barad seem to have roughly two-thirds the usual chance of dropping a Tiny Treasure Chest compared to monsters elsewhere.

In three hours with the Potion active, I averaged 194 loots per hour and 5.67 chests (5, 6, and 6). This works out to a 3.24% drop rate, about one-third lower than the ~5% drop rate that people farming in other zones have reported.

This seems like something Blizz would do, particularly since some parts of Tol Barad are absolutely crawling with quest-target enemies.

The recorded drops of blue gear add up to 53, out of 73130 loots, which means each chest has less than a 0.1% chance to contain any of them.

I have farmed using this 3 separate times in Deepholm and have had good luck. I needed lots of Embersilk Cloth to help my mage. In just about 3 hours(as said before 3 separate occasions) of farming using the potion of treasure finding i was able to take my mages enchanting from 475 to 520(from all the greens dropping from troggs and tiny treasure chests and using some of the cloth to make a few extra greens) and my tailoring from 475ish to 525 and have my full vicious set for pvping. I used my druid(tank) to do the farming. I got a little bored at one point and took some video of me farming them and put it to the so Bodies by Drowning Pool. Check it out.

And before you say anything, I know I didn't show anything about the little treasure boxes on the video.. lol

Anyway, the first time i got 30 chests, second time got about 20-22 and the 3rd time got 27-29. If i didn't use all the mats up and sold the stuff I got then it would be a pretty good way to make some gold but I usually use the mats making stuff my toons.

These have been nerfed to the point of useless. The drop rate has been lowered so much, they might as well have just removed this completely from the game rather than let people waste an hour of their time trying.
