This item comes from pickpocketing monsters around level 20. There are other lock boxes as well for higher levels with better items inside, and require a higher skill level.

This is one of the main ways a rogue gets Lockpicking skill ups. These boxes come from various humanoid monsters when pick-pocketed, and have to be lockpicked to be opened. Not only does this give skill, but it also can give a couple good things (Healing Potion, Lesser Moonstone, and Moss Agate).

I have one that I can't open. I am lvl 27 and my lockpicking is over 100 and I keep getting told its locked. Any ideas?

NVM figured it out. For any other noobs (like me) to opening a locked box..you need to open your skills book (or on one of your fast bars if you have it there) click on your pick lock icon then click on the box...voila you can open it.

These are not like the Practice Lock's made by engineers. Those can be sold on the auction house, these cannot. They also contain a few copper.

You have to use "Pick Locks" from your general spells/aplities on the junkbox, press 'N'... ye know getting it? :P

its simple, take use lockpicking from your spellbook on the box and you should be able to pick it. then you should be able to open it. not usually much of value, though... :/

You can very easily get these from the Skeletal Warriors and Skeletal Mages in Duskwood... get to at least lvl 22 so u can use Distract to make them look away, then use pickpocket. Theres a very high chance to pickpocket a Battered Junkbox, and I even got a Lesser Moonstone once off a Skeletal mage, and I did this all in about an hour... all in all I got about 10 Junkboxes, several Healing Potions, and a lot of silver. If you're a rogue, it's a piece of cake to rake in the dough.

I was about to give up even looting these things off of the bad guys, but checked here. Someone said it's worth selling the heal pots...so I figured, eh...

So I kept with it for a bit and opened one with a Pattern for Dark Leather Gloves. They give us a better lockpicking skill. I have some just in case. Cost a few gold for a pair on my server. Pattern goes for almost 6g on my server (according to Auctioneer.)

If you are a rogue, go to Thousand Needles. Go to dark cloud pinacle, right by the lift. Then go up to the Grimtotems. Use pick pocket on them. They drop about 25 copper and a battered junkbox almost everytime. I got 37 battered jumk boxes in sbout 30-45 minutes.

you can also go to stromwind stockade when you pickpocket the guys inside you will get lots of junk boxes and lots of silver
25 silver each time and som junk boxes som food potions gems you name it by the way i found a book in a junk box and i sold for 15g good luck with pickpocketing

WOW LETS SAY ITS A 7%chance to drop something good and i can pick poket 200a hour thats 14greens many gems but well worth there fair share of coins im going to so farm theses and get back to you guys

Just wanted to post and say that I just looted Assassin's Blade from a Battered Junkbox that I picked off of a Thistlefur Shaman in Ashenvale. So, go out and pick pocket more as it seems blizzard has added a larger loot table to junk boxes.

I have found these few things from them:

1:some copper-few silver (less than 3s)
2:healing potion
3:small pocketwatch
4:broken mirror

That is all, if I find anything else, I'll edit, if anybody else finds anything else post. (People pay around 15s for these things, Unlock it for them first unless they want ethir skill up!)

You can also pickpocket these out from Undead-mobs (Flesh Eater etc) from Duskwood :)

Rogues can pickpocket these of almost any mob, I usually just pickpocket all tha mobs in Durnholde Keep.

Btw only rogues can lockpick and pickpocket! LOLZ!

I picked several of these from the syndicate guys in Southshore. Too bad their only level 1 and didnt give any skill :(

Yeah, well, if you click your little lockpick icon, click on the box, it unlocks. Then you can right-click and open it.

Lockboxes and chests can be opened by rogues using the Pick Lock skill learned at level 16. Your max level lockpicking skill is determined by the level of your character. The basic formula is 'char level x 5'. So, a level 16 rogue will have a max lockpicking level of 80, a 17 rogue would be 85 and so on up to a (currently) maximum of 300.

Once you have learned the lockpicking skill, you will also need a set of Thieves' Tools. You do not need to buy these, you should receive them during the 'lockpicking' quest.
Once the quest is completed, you can place the Pick Lock onto your toolbar from inside your spellbook. You then click this button and then click the lockbox/chest you wish to open.
As with most levelling professions, the items you want to unlock will be colour coded with the relevant chance of gaining a level point:- The word 'locked' will be red, orange, yellow, green or grey.

Red = Skill level too low
Orange = 100% chance of gaining a skill point
Yellow = Good chance of gaining a skill point
Green = A slight chance of gaining a skill point
Grey = No chance of gaining a skill point

Lockboxes can also be opened by using a skeleton key created by blacksmiths. These are NOT to be confused with the Skeleton Key which is used to open the entrance to the Scholomance instance.

The table below shows the minimum lockpicking skill level required to open each type of lockbox and which blacksmith skeleton key will open it (if possible).

Got a bit tired of clicking pick lock, then the box, then opening the box, so made this macro that will do it all with the same button.
/cast pick lock
/use battered junkbox
/use battered junkbox
Just keep pressing this button and all your boxes will be lockpicked and opened :)
Of course, replace the name of the junkbox with the boxes you're pickpocketing and you can re-use it
