When you put down the banner it will summon a level 41 mob that you must kill. Easy.

This quest can become bugged. If someone attempts it and dies to the mob then leaves, the mob won't despawn, can't be attacked by other players, and blocks any attempt by other players to spawn the mob and do the quest.

This quest was really easy! I did it with my lvl 40 Retribution Paladin.
Just go down east, and you will see an area with a lot of Dragonkins. They are around lvl 40-42, but are really easy kills!
Go to the cave formed as a Dragon (Its showed on your map) and plant the banner. An level 41 Dragonkin will apear. This one is also an easy kill..

One of the easiet, and best rewarded quest I have done in a long time. :P

You don't have to actually open up the cave and go inside (you can't get into the instance in any event) -- just stand on the "tongue" to plant the banner. If you get too close to the door, it'll complain...

You also have to wait for the spawn to finish telling you about how wonderful he is.

Most fire mages will know this by now, but just be careful. Don't try any tricks with this last quest. Remember the mob will spawn, and clear out the area first. More than 2 of these fire resistant guys, and you can find yourself in a surprising amount of trouble, regardless of your level.

Other than that, it IS an easy quest. Good luck.

I planted the banner and trapped myself inside it.
Then some mob showed up, which i couldn't see...but could easily kill it anyway.
Just too bad that the quest was bugged and i wasn't able to move.
Had to HS to town, however the banner probably despawns in a few minutes as well.

The Dragonkin that appears is Smolderwing (https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/npc=23789) - like everyone said before, lvl 41 easy kill (only 1,500hp). No bug for me, just planted the banner at the base of the ramp and moved up toward the entrance to try to get him from behind with a backstab. Unfortunately, after he's done talking and transitions to melee, he's instantly turned to face you, so no sneak attack - just have to take him head on.

Brogg offers 5 quests. I had to do 3 of them to get offered Spirits of Stonemaul Hold and the follow up which is this one. I was a 35 when I first got a quest from him so just do all he offers and you will eventually get this one.

it's sad but even with two 70's, this is the first time I've set foot near onyxia's lair with any toon (37 druid). I was like, oh, that's where it is... I was never in a guild that stayed together long enough to raid it much. They should tune it down to a 10 or 20 man for 70's who want to see the content... But who wants to collect all that FR gear...

Like Moenbase said, be careful where u place the banner ... I also got stuck in it, couldn't hit Smolderwing and thus couldn't loot it (pet took care of him tho). Could be my troll mohawk getting in the way --:) .

Suggest maybe u plant as far back from the stone entry as possible .. ?

I've tried placing the banner several times on my gnome rogue, mob didn't even show up. Which is kind of a shame, because I want Brogg's Battle Harness. Oh well. Be warned that although the reward is great, don't be surprised if you get cheated by bugs on this quest. Good luck.

I had the same problem as several above, mob was bugged unattackable, but if you really want those rewards, and don't wanna wait for a server reset, open up a GM Ticket.

A GM despawned the buggy one for me so i could summon it properly and get my nice reward / xp.

at first i thought was bugged but he toys around with you and you have to wait for him to attack you took like a minute until he went after me on my lvl 39 Orc Rogue but taking him down was easy

I had a little difficuty placing the banner at first... you need to be closer to the "end" of the tongue and not the entrance itself. A strong word of caution if you are doing this solo, like I did - the outer area is guarded pretty hevily by lvl 40/41 dragonkin. If you can stealth past them, get into the enrtrance then turn around and creep out until you can place the banner. This should get you a 1-on-1 fight with the lvl 41 dragon without worrying about adds. If you can't stealth then you may have a battle getting to the entrance itself - just make sure you clear a path so you don't end up fighting 2-4 mobs at once rather than 1.

If you can get the dragon 1-1 then it's not bad... good xp, although I wish I could loot/skin the damned thing, and a pretty reward when you're done. So far this is one of the most rewarding and easiest (as a lvl 39 feral druid) I have done yet.

I couldn't get this to work. Tried clearing the area several times and replanting the banner, but to no avail. Must have planted the banner a half a dozen times and nothing.

EDIT: Filed an in-game complaint ticket with a GM, went back after an hour or so, and everything worked properly. Don't fear the beast! My lvl42 Shammy's whirlwinds sucked him in faster than a double-wide in a tornado.

just did this one on my alt, it wasnt bugged just have to be farther away from onys gate for it to work, a dragon spwnd (lvl 41) and burnd the banner, killd the dragon , quest complete

Plant flag outside entrance to Onyxia's Lair at 52,75. You have to be on the dirt to plant it, not at the instance entrance, itself. A dragon will come out, flap it's wings, burn the flag, and attack. The dragon is no tougher than any of the mobs you have to deal with on your way there. I've done this twice on Hydraxis with no problem, so if it's bugged, it's not bugged all the time.

Note: Some of the NPC's get "stuck" when someone uses fear, feign death, etc. on them. When that happens, they just evade further attacks until they are reset. I've seen this happen a few times, and I just ask a GM to reset them, after which they are good as new and ready to be killed.

Quest isn't bugged on stormscale.

For those without Co'ords, it's the cave to the right of Mudsprocket, in the Wyrmbog.
Place is crawling with Searing Whelps and Firemane Firecallers, but not overly hard.
Be sure to clear the area outside of Onyxia's gate before you summon. Just stand in front of the cave, in the dirt, and summon away.
It's a lvl 41 dragon named Smolderwing. Nothing unusual about him. Easy kill, soloed as a 41 holy priest.
5700 exp, 1g 10s, and a not so bad quest reward for possibly the easiest quest at this lvl.

Hope this helps someone.

Easy for 43 Warrior no problem 75%+ health left. He is only a regular 41, non-elite. Got 5700xp, definitely worth the time.

Just did this quest on Skywall Server and it is not bugged. Just wait for him to light the banner on fire and then him apart. (makes a decent dragon stew)

Just as a side note, if you have "Catch a Dragon by the Tail" the Wyrmtail is lying along the way. More efficiency that way.

When I first went to attack him, it wouldn't let me attack, but I ran a few feet and turned around and then it let me attack.

damn, this thing is still bugged. sometimes it isnt and sometimes it is. opened a ticket up. Worked fine on my alliance character, but now on my horde Smolderwing is already spawned and just flapping away at the entrance, before i dropped the flag.

an hour and a half later the Game master contacted me and took care of it in 20 seconds. got rid of the guy, and said "Smolderwing was pissed at someone!" lol good that they have a sense of humor. ask if they would fix it with a patch and he said he wasnt a developer so he didnt know, and that it was rare that it happens.

bugged on Blackwing Lair. tried to do it for about 20 minutes today with a friend but dragon never attacked :p. is smolderwing supposed to light it on fire or one of the flying drakes?

on the ahn'qiraj server... works fine. go to 52,75 and plant the flag directly in front of the cave and wait. the dragon will come, talk to you and set fire to the flag.

thats when you pwn him. very very easily kill- level 41 red dragon <3

If the dragon "Smolderwing" is hovering outside of the cave before you plant the banner...might as well go do something else. Tried planting banner all over the front of the gate, in the grass, etc. Apparently, if someone pops the Smolderwing dragon and does not kill it, the dragon will sit there as an invalid target for who knows how long. Been 2 hours so far for me. Opened a ticket and waiting for response.

A message comes up saying you have to enter the lair to plant the banner.

It says you need to be part of a raid, at least lvl 50 and have the Drakefire amulet in your inventory to enter.

Just planted the banner about 50 times (not an exaggeration!) and no response. Opened a ticket and no response for about half an hour, so I logged and hope that they deal with it!
You'd think that they'd have made it work, seeing as it is a relatively recent addition!

I had no problem killing the dragon, but when I planted the banner I got stuck inside of it. I could kill that dragon when he came for me, but I couldn't move until the banner disappeared.

Bivster is correct. You plant the flag and wait for the dragon to spawn at the mouth of the cave. He'll come over and light the banner on fire and afterwards you can target and kill him.

Coordinates are 56,71 adn you want to stand right on the edge which would look like the first step into the entry way. Then the Drake will appear.

Read the thread here before the quest. I worked through it the first time by planting the banner and waiting for the mob to attack me BEFORE targeting. Good luck!

Just did this quest as a 42 mage. Placing the banner worked fine, but for some reason it appeared *directly* on top of my, trapping me inside the banner itself. Could still spin around and cast spells, so I killed the dragon with no probs, but it was very awkward as I couldn't see a thing, my screen was completely blotted out.

About 10 seconds after killing the dragon, the banner disappeared and I could move again.

Stand directly in front of the entrance to Onyxia's Lair when you plant the Stonemaul Banner. A level 41 drake (Smolderwing) will spawn and fly out from the cave, you must defeat it to get quest credit.

The problem is he is "supposed to spawn".....

If he is allready spawned as in my case... then you cannot spawns him yourself for your quest...So the posts all saying not bugged also say they spawned him..all the posts saying bugged he has allready been spawned and is jsut hanging out there...So have to get him to go away some how.../petition.. so you can spawn him yourself and kill him...

You would think they would be smart enough to put a respawn ticker on him>

You guys wanna know why it's bugged? or maybe WHAT is bugged? it's an idiot/noob that spawned him and didn't kill him. The bug here is that the mob doesn't despawn, so basically it stays there saying invalid target keeping others from starting the event.

If the dragon is already there when you arrive... good luck completing the quest.

The quest looks like its fixed. I went right up to the entrance to Onyxia's lair, planted the banner, Smolderwing appeared and said a few things, I massacred him and completed the quest, no problems or hangups anywhere.

Completed it today and there were no problems at all. Just wait for him to light the banner on fire and then you kill him. lvl. 39 hunter - very easy.

But watch out for sourrounding mobs.

Can't be looted or skinned. I killed him twice just to be sure. And as stated before... he is a 'friendly' until he says his little dialogue and lights the banner on fire. Be patient!

anyone did this quest? I went the the lair entrance, there was a warlock there who had planted his banner, so I planted mine just before the cavern entrance and...nothing happened. the lock didn't get it to work either...blah!

The quest shouldn't be bugged, you just have to be patient. When you plant the flag at the mouth of the cave, the dragon will appear. However, the dragon will then do a little speech and come and burn the flag. Only after he's finished talking and burning the flag will you be able to attack him. You'll know because he'll come straight for you. If you try to attack or target him while he's still talking it will say invalid target because you have to let him finish first.

So if you were thinking it's bugged, it's probably not. Just wait a few more seconds and you'll be able to attack him. I've found the best place to put the flag is right in the center at the front of the cave, but still on the 'grass' part outside of the cave, not directly on the stone of the mouth of the cave. If that made sense, haha. Kind of hard to explain.

52, 75 directly outside Onyxia's cave, drop the banner and kill Smolderwing - lvl 41 normal Dragon. Not bugged

Go to (52,75), drop the banner on the ground in front of the cave (in the dirt, not the rock area).

Smolderwing is a L41 (non-rare/elite) that you have to kill. Once he lights the banner on fire, go ahead and attack him. He's only got 1332 HPS, so an easier kill than most of the mobs in the area. Nothing bugged about this quest at all.
