I have never seen it mined from small thorium vein. The other WoW data collection sites show over 200,000 hits for small thorium vein and not one arcane crystal mined.

Yes, it can be mined from small thorium veins. I did it today in Silithus. I don't know what the odds are for it to occur, but it has to be astronomical.

Start holding on to your arcane crystals! In TBC they can be turned into an important (and expensive) enchanting material. They are also used for some great blacksmithing recipes in expansion.

So far every one has talked about where you can get them but not where to use them.. of the possible uses for the arcane crystal one is to get 3 arcane dust. My question is how exactly does that happen since you can't disenchant them?

I am stating for the record as of now that Arcane crystals CAN BE FOUND in SMALL THORIUM VEINS!! it's a small chance but I just found one so it can be done.

An interesting note: Due to the increased drop rate of arcane crystals in all thorium veins. For a very short time(275-280) Arcanite Keys can be a good substitute for Imperial Plate bracers for getting some skill up.

Transmute Arcanite is:
Thorium Bar x1
Arcane Crystal x1

Arcanite Key x2 is:
Arcanite Bar x1
Dense Grinding Stone x1 (4 Dense Stone)

This compared to...

Imperial Plate bracers:

It should be noted Arcanite keys are of yellow difficulty when you train them at 275, but for those 5 blacksmithing levels its well worth the risk over the orange skill Imperial Plate bracers to save yourself some money/time.

Decided to just scour the places I need had Thorium, and it took me 3 1/2 hours to get 6 crystals. First after 1 hour.

I have probably mined about 25 thorium deposits (total of rich+small) and I have not seen this drop. The sad thing is that now in BC and WotLK the 300-375 recipes still need this for arcanite (espicially engineering) and these crystals are really rare.
EDIT: I have now mined about 45 total deposits and I have seen this drop twice.

If you are farming these for some reason, I would highly advise going to Un'goro Crater. I went here to farm Thorium Ore and in an hour and a half i had about 217 Thorium Ore as well as 6 arcane crystals. Hope you have as much luck as I did =)

So I got my bindings for Thunderfury and realised I need tons & tons of these crystals.

The absolutely best place to farm these in my opinion is simply silithus. Yesterday I went farming for about 30-40 minutes and earned about 1k gold (from the thorium and dense stones and random gems) + @#$%loads of arcane crystals.

Seriously, it was ridiculous amount of thorium veins, especially in The Crystal Vale, northwest silithus. Just follow the mountain sides of silithus like a circle, don't bother go into the hives, it will just slow down the farming process. And make sure to fly around in Crystal vale when you get there because there is atleast 4+ nodes there.

There is like zero players in Silithus nowadays so this should work on every server, mine is Highly populated but I still couldn't see someone else there :P

50 minutes of running circles, mining thorium deposits close the mountains in Silithus got me 7 Arcane Crystals.

Arcane Crystals are RANDOM drops from mining thorium. There is no "best" place to farm them.

Prior to the Sundering I would have said Un'Goro Crater was the best place for mining these. However, as it is now possible to fly in old Azeroth Silithus is, in my opinion, the better place to farm these.

There seem to be more Rich Thorium Veins than in Un'Goro Crater and Silithus is large enough that you always have a full selection of nodes to mine.

In four runs around the edge of the zone I was able to mine 20 Arcane Crystals (5, 5, 4, 6). Each run took about 15 mins with a Death Knight on a 280% speed mount.

A single hour of farming through Winterspring (with what seemed to be no competition) gave me:

I have farmed in Un'Goro, Silithis, and Winterspring and so far Winterspring seems to have the best drop rate considering convenience as well as competition. On my server, Un'Goro is a popular zone for Thorium farmers, and the issue with Silithis is that a lot of the node are deep in the hives. I also noticed that in Winterspring the Crystals seemed to drop equally if not slightly more off of Small Thorium veins as opposed to Rich (which are prevalent in the zone as well).

I'd definitely recommend Winterspring if you need a high volume of Arcane Crystals (for Thunderfury, for example).

I farmed these in Silithus on my Death-Knight with 280% flying speed + 20% bonus from frost-spec, i think it has taken me about 4 or 5 hours overall, this is what i've got:

I found some sitting on the AH rather cheaply.
Just keep an eye out. Got about 30 for 200g, which saved me about 2.5 hours of farming.

Also, UnGoro Crater dropped like, 3 Crystals in an hour for me. Not the best place to go.

After doing the xmute on my xmute spec alch I ended with 15 Arcanite Bars(Only 1 x2 proc)
Arcanite Bars - 50g x 15=750g
Gems 6g x 225 = 1350g (takes a few days but they sell within a few days)
Vendored Dense Stones = 20g
Total gold made = 2120g in one hour

Note: Prices may vary per server and they largely do. Also 2120g in one hour isnt accounting for time spent prospecting/posting to AH/ transmuting etc or the amount of gold taken for AH cut.
Also note that your luck may vary in acquiring arcane crystals as its mostly RNG, but this should give you the idea for the potential of doing this.

Silithus is much better than Un' Goro in my opinion, there's maybe twice as many nodes, and Arcane Crystals have dropped like crazy there, got 3/4 nodes once. If you're looking to farm, it's not quick, but Silithus eases the burden.

I need 100 of these, total, for legendary weapon quest.

Been mining in Winterspring for roughly 2 hours. Almost 1400 thorium ores, and only 11 crystals so far. Will try Silithus now, as some of you suggested, to see it it's better there.

Anachronos is a fairly low pop server, and these are rarely at the AH (ally side). Tried using /trade to get some - soon someone said "crystals now on ah", the price was ridiculous: 85g each... Meh, the greed knows no limits, appearently.

Ok, Silithus is definitively better. It took "only" 4.5 hours to get the remaining 89 crystals. What makes it better, is that by following the outer edge, you'll find a constant supply of nodes, none very far from the last. A round takes maybe 10 mins, and the nodes ahead of you will always respawn between each round.

Compared to Winterspring, you avoid obstacles likes trees, since the nodes are in open terrain. I do not recommend entering hives to farm, it will increase the time spent between each node.

IF YOU ARE FARMING FOR THUNDERFURY Make sure you get 80 of these then find a transmute master. Generally out of 20 you will end up with 4-6 more of these items using the transmute master. Sometimes significantly more sometimes not. But 80 should be just fine to reach your 100 amount.

Farming- All previously mentioned farming spots will work. Silithus is arguably the best but if you have another agenda for clearing zones(loremaster)(grinding rep for The Exalted/Diplomat/Ambassador titles) The other zones will work just fine.

For Cata(and you can expect MoP) farming of arcante bars, Silithus farming without going into the bug holes will be your best bet. Take the opportunity to use the thoruim ore for prospecting items and sell them for profit on the AH. Mix this up with selling the ore/bars as well to see where your realm finds the best profit margin for those items...I expect it will be a mix of the two.

If you get incredibly bored with this hop over to Ungoro for a couple circuits and then head back to silithus farming.

Items to help with this process

Faster flying +speed boosts/trinkets
A good computer! If you fly extremely fast but have slow loading sometimes you will pass the item before it has the opportunity to spawn on your screen.
Big bags/huge mining bags.
Argent gruntling/Moll-E (for getting rid of items quickly)
Guild pet vendors (for selling items you dont care to keep/mail but dont just want to destroy) - I dont know if Blizz fixed this but if you keep your Pet up and it disappears just go into AQ real quick and it should reappear regardless of cooldown time.
Addons...gathering addons are extremely useful in letting you know how much progress you have made. Many will also keep track of what others in your guild have done as well, and create a more accurate circuit for you to fly/ride.
Last but not least...a druid. Instantly mounting provides an incredible advantage to time and may not seem like a big deal for 5 minutes of farming but for hours of farming you can complete 10 times more.

So after months of farming I finally got my second binding and started to farm these up over the course of a day or so. Doing circles of Silithus along the mountain line is by far the fastest way to get these.

After about 3-4 hours of farming I ended up with the following:
Thorium Ore - 1571
Dense Stone - 1755
Truesilver Ore - 84
Arcane Crystal - 71 (A guildie had some on an alt that I nabbed :P)
Aquamarine - 2
Azerothian Diamond - 16
Jade - 2
Large Opal - 6
Star Ruby - 13
Blue Sapphire - 9
Huge Emerald - 7

But my Thunderfury is now complete! Good Luck to everyone else on theirs!

Did 2 full circuits around the outer edge of Silithus. Didn't bother to go after any nodes that were inside the hives. Total time was maybe 20 minutes, probably less.

These are quite the pita to get now , 1 lap of Silithus staying only on the outside edge and going in no bug holes , 1st lap 5 arcane crystals , 2nd lap 4 arcane crystals , don't pass the small thorium veins by cause have found as many crystals in there as the rich deposited ones , plus untold ores and gems and such, well over 1500 thorium ore and counting.

tried Un'goro and had worst luck there so went back to Silithus , also have seen many rares since no one seems to come here anymore , really cool looking dude called Setis standing at the entrance to AQ

gonna be quite the grind to get to 100 crystals ! , good luck !

Best place to farm is Swamp of Sorrows. Follow the edge around with ore tracking on. When you reach the cave go in and collect what is in there. Usually there are 4-6 nodes up. Then fly directly across to the west of Bogpaddle and start following the edge to the west. Go around the edge of misty valley and continue. Alliance should have no problem, Horde, you will be flying over The Harborage, which is a Draenei town. Note: You don't go near bogpaddle, so if you are hated with Steamwheedle Cartel like I am, you shouldn't have a problem. You will also pick up truesilver on the way, which is a plus. Good luck!

Silithus remains my favorite place to farm this material. Rich Thorium Veins are plentiful.

Given the sheer number required in the creation of either Thunderfury or Sulfuras, you'll likely need a wee bit more than a single trip. This is partly why i prefer farming in Silithus as opposed to other zones. With a hearth set to Dalaran, (or one of the Shrines, which offer a free port to Dalaran) the Caverns of Time are a free portal away. By taking the Caverns of Time portal, the flight to Silithus takes players over the spawn points of both the Ravasaur Matriarch's Nest as well as some Kalimdor rares like Gruff, who have a chance to drop the Kalimdor-only Jade armor.

None of this extra information will get you any extra crystals, but hopefully it can break up the monotony of your gathering sessions. Happy trails!

If you're looking for a good place to farm these, Silithus is great. Just make a circle around the outer edge of the zone (near the mountains) and you'll find tons of Thorium deposits. The drop rate isn't very high, but I managed to farm about 3k ore while farming 150 crystals for Sulfuras and Thunderfury. I also managed to farm nearly 300 truesilver ore in the process.

Finding 2 in 1 vein is entirely possible. I've only had this happen to me once, but it did happen.

As for finding them in general, it's not too hard. If I spend about 2 or 3 hours looking in Burning, Winterspring, and even Ungoro, I can usually find at least 2 with some luck.

I've also found a few Azerothian Diamonds and Black Diamonds while mining for Arcane Crystals.

Ok ppl, heres a little tip ive discovered on my own:

Being a paly, I wanted the Energized breastplate until I can get Lawbringer. This means doing DM East runs. DM East takes 20-30 mins to complete if you have a good leader. (run from boss to boss, avoid all patrols)

I went to DM East 10 times in a week with a group of guildies, often being the only miner, as you can only go 5 man. We did each run on 20 mins and went up to 3 times in a row (thats like 1 hour)

Finally got the chestplate but thats beside the point..

The point is that after you have killed Aldzin the Wildshaper you will have acces to a tunnel behind him, leading you to the exit of the instance.

In this tunnel are 2 or 3 rich thorium veins.

To my experience there are 1 Arcane Crystal in every 3rd vein. (frikkin 33% drop rate for me :D)

Doing 10 runs, in a week, getting to mine about 12 veins in those runs, got me 4x Arcane Crystal, 2x Azerothian Diamond, 1x Large Opal.

Do DM East.

And while you there... grab a Libram of of Rapidity or Focus, and sell it for 250g, or get your class book and your Royal Seal. :) I *love* DM East :)

(Best thing might be to form a group with 4 ppl from your guild, who you go with reguarly. Ppl are easilly persuaded if you mention that it will be a book farming run)

The arcane crystals drop from small and rich thorium mines. They're still very much in demand for making arcanite bars. Don't forget arcanite bars (from arcane crystals) are absolutely needed for the arcanite rod for enchanting and for the pally mount quest. I sell arcanite bars for 18-20g each on my server.

Can the Arcane Crystal also be obtained from prospecting because i've never got THIS on ;)

Pre-BC: Very hard to get this crystal and would only drop from a big vein.
BC: Easy to get, it came from small and big veins, sometimes multiples from a single vein.
A BC~patch: Hard to get. When I farm Thorium Ores I see 1 Arcane crystal after about an hour.

It appears you can't get Arcane Crystals from Prospecting.

Just prospected 130 Thorium ore and got:

8x Blue Sapphire
7x Azerothian Diamond
8x Large Opal
4x Huge Emerald
2x Star Ruby

Maybe I was just unlucky, RNG n all that.

Prior to patch 3.2, Silithis hives used to be the place for me to go farm these crystals. After the patch, I needed more so back to Silithis I went. I cleared all of the hives 4 times and made the rounds topside as well, spending several hours.

Total net was 4 crystals. Two were from the rich thorium nodes in the hives and 2 were from small thorium nodes outside the hives.
Looks like the nerf bat was used big time here, or else I was just unlucky.

Still a good place for thorium ore, dense stone, and skinning silithid chitins, but I will search elswhere for the arcane crystals.

The burning steppes is the best place to find these. In silithus you have a ton of creatures just dying to knock you off your mount so idk about that place and steppes is closer to home, well for allys anyways.

Ungoro Crater on my Server Misha has an incredible spawn rate of Thorium. In 1 hour I got over 800 Thorium, about 17 Arcane cystals, piles of other crystals that come from Thorium veins... and nodes that respawn so quickly its scary! And all I did was run around the outside ring while watching tv. Ive seen nodes on top of nodes in there as well. Its abnormal... the spawn rate on our server is incredible.

As of 2 months ago when I was in Ungoro mining... it was great!
At the end of a week of random running.. I had 8,000 Thorium and about 12,000 Dense Stone some of which i used to make Stone Statues which heals me :) (im a jewel crafter).

Anyways, thats my 2 cents...

It seems that on most servers, the prices for Arcane Crystals at AH have risen substantially since the test server details have been released regarding the Paladin epic mount quest. If you can get crystals for 25g or less, snap them up quickly while you can.

This 12G shows as the median price. One person has 20 of them up for 249G. For those with the trade JC, Alchemy or Enchanting, these items are needed to raise their skill levels long before they can go into the high level areas to mine this. I can't see many people spending this type gold just to raise their skill level one time. Why don't people THINK of who their potential customers might be before slapping these ridiculous prices on items? Really baffling.

I had farmed a bunch of rich thorium veins in Burnning steppes Winterspring and Un'Goro (Non Terror Run)....NO DROPS! The first RTV i Found in Terror Run dropped an AC. There is a reason that those elite Stegosaurs are there...to make it harder to mine! Im going to test the theory that Terror Run is more "Rich" than the rest.

thott says that one of these were found in yellow power crystal in un'goro, i always check yellow power crystals whenever I there, never anything, the only reliable source is farming every rich thorium vein you ever find in hopes of finding one.

I've found 12 crystals, 2 star rubies, 2 large opals, and one azerothian diamond on various rich thorium veins. Personally I've mined at least 100 rich veins total.

I play on Alexstrasza and have noted a marked decrease in the value of these the first time I sold one, it went for 18g (a bit below the usual range to begin with), but nowadays they go for 1-2g apiece. Did they just become useless after a patch and nobody told me, or is this just a server-specific flaccidity? It's really a shame that they're still fairly rare but selling for so little.

I can just imagine a GM sitting at his desk and he says o he looks cool lemme give him a arcane crystal.... I was farming with a friend and while in party he got 3 arcane crystals in what seemed like 15 minutes and i got 0 in the whole 3 hours or so of farming. just not fair lol.

I have mined maybe 6 or 7 rich thorium veins. 6 had no arcane, just thorium and dense stone. 7th one I get an arcane crystals, blue sapphire, and a huge emerald :) Not as lucky as 2 arcane crystals, but like I said =P Best luck yet. I need 19 of em >:( lol

Yes its very frustrating.I have noticed the price changes aswell and its sick. from 15-20 to 50g each chrystal. Just cause of naxx attunment and to hand in for their tier 3 parts. Think about thoose who wont be able to to that kind of end game?They have to get their gear on much cheaper and easier ways.So basicly for an ordinry not that good unguilded or guilded person wants to get an Arcanite reaper/Heartseeker etc etc? think he will pay over 2k gold for it?. he rahter die out there and stop playing the game cause he knows already that he dosnt put up for the standards, and thats Sad*Blizz Please do something about this noncence. Thats my opinion.

Un'Goro not only has better AC drop rates in my experience, it's a smaller area to cover since they really only consistently appear in Terror Run. It's easier to manage competition like this not to mention that with the exception of King Mosh which actually spawns in the Golakka Hot Springs and NOT in Terror Run, the highest level mob you will be threatened by is a lvl 55 Elder Diemetradon. All the other zones are chock full of 58+ mobs which make aggro a pain in the ass especially if you're under 60

I got the recipe to transmute them today I just need to get my hands on the recipe for the stones...
so I asked a friend what those crystals go for he said 20G rougly.
checking AH I found one for 2G buyout while everything else was 17,5G buy out...
hoping I will find prices like this once every 2 days :p
but I'm guessing I wont :(

I farm thorium on a daily basis for about 3-5 hours in EPL and WS and I've had the most luck in WS (9 crystals in about 3 hours once). Usually I end up with 1 crystal every 30 minutes, I'm not counting other gems. Some people have much worse luck with these so it won't always be that easy. Plus you have to work out a timer to steal veins from farmers (who seem to love WS on my server). It helps to have gatherer mod or CT mapmod for the veins until you learn spawn points by heart. The best vein in my experience is the one in the Owlkin Place in southern WS--I got 2 crystals out of one vein, two days in a row. But they all have a decent drop rate.

I think right now they are very rare to get, even from Rich Thoriums, I think they are nerfed more than ever.

Currently on Aragul, Arcane crystals are selling for MORE than Arcanite Bars. How does this possibly make sense when there's literally no other use for them other than Transmute: Arcanite Bar which require additionally 1 thorium bar and a 24 hour cool down?

I farmed Rich Thorium in EPL for last two days.

During that time, I've got 221 Thorium Ore and:
3 Arcane Crystals (1,36%)
6 Huge Emeralds (2,71%)
5 Blue Sapphires (2,26%)
1 Star Ruby (0,45%)
2 Large Opal (0,90%)
1 Azerothian Diamond (0,45%)

To sum up, gems droprate seems to be around 8,14%. I think 3% droprate for arcane crystal is too high :)

HOW TO OBTAIN Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker

Receive both Bindings of the Windseeker (drop rate: 4,08%) from Garr and Bindings of the Windseeker (drop rate: 4,28%) from Baron Geddon in Molten Core.
Visit Highlord Demitrian in Silithus. He will give you Vessel of Rebirth to start the quest Examine the Vessel which leads to Thunderaan the Windseeker.
Kill Ragnaros for Essence of the Firelord (100% drop rate when you have the quest in your log).
Aquire 10x Enchanted Elementium Bar.
Bring your guild and head back to Highlord Demitrian. Turn in the quest and he will summon Prince Thunderaan which will drop Dormant Wind Kissed Blade.
Complete Rise, Thunderfury! and you're done!

Mats needed for 10x Smelt Enchanted Elementium:

100x Arcanite Bar (100x Thorium Bar + 100x Arcane Crystal + 100x Transmute: Arcanite)
10x Elementium Ingot (Buy from the Auction House or loot in Blackwing Lair from Blackwing Technician)
10x Fiery Core (Buy from the Auction House or loot in Molten Core from trash mobs)
30x Elemental Flux

I just farmed some of these up today. I haven't seen any new comments on here so lemme give you the deets. I did roughly 3 circuits of Un'goro hitting all the nodes. I got 8 Arcane crystals in that 3 circuits and 2 definitely came from small thorium deposits. Going by my results it shouldn't take more than about 30 minutes to get all 10 you need to make the sword. Your results may vary. Good luck and have fun!
